Character Quote: "Eh? Earn my keep? Stealing stuff is a lot of work, so I say that I've definitely earned anything I snagged."

Name: Laron Adelaide

Age: 23

Race: Human

Class: Thief

Weapon: Dual Knives

Personality & Background:

The various people that Laron had aided throughout his unorthodox "charity drives" all have one thing in common: "That man always has a smile on his face. Indeed, no matter what kind of situation the infamous thief finds himself in, he rarely ever loses his cool and always seems to find some sort of silver lining in them. Although his main source of livelihood is leeching off the product of the livelihood of others, he considers himself a cut above the rest of his bandit brethren since his actions aren't primarily motivated by self gain but rather a desire to help improve the lives of the people in the slums of Callela.

However, Laron has a difficult time trusting others specially after his father's partners betrayed him which consequently led to his arrest and imprisonment. Still he is protective of the people he had deemed trustworthy.

When it comes to work, Laron prefers low risk - high reward jobs if he could help it. Of course, such opportunities are more often than not hard to come by. Thus he exercises a lot of caution and precautions before, during, and after a heist. Due to the events that led to his father's arrest, Laron prefers doing his job alone. When forced to work with a partner, he would never let his guard down around them until after the job is over.

Abandoned as a child, it seemed like an early end was to be the fate of the unfortunate orphan. However, through some bizarre stroke of luck, Fritjov Adelaide, the man who would later become Laron's adoptive father accidentally stumbled upon him in a dark alleyway while he was making his escape from a heist. He didn't have the heart to abandon the baby after he had been alerted to its presence so he decided to bring the child with him and raise him as his own.

Growing up in the presence of thieves, it seemed inevitable for Laron to pick up the tricks of the trade as well. However, his father did not want the boy to grow up indiscriminately robbing the rich entirely motivated by self-profit. So when he realized that Laron had both the makings and the interest to become a thief, he decided to set the boy's moral compass first by starting to set an example for him. While he had only indiscriminately stolen goods and trinkets of value to sustain himself and the kid he had adopted all those year ago, he began targeting only the filthy rich during his heists. That meant working with other thieves, however, to increase the chances of pulling of a successful robbery.

Even though Fritjov and his band of thieves had numerous successful heists, his colleagues disapproved of his tendency to selflessly give away his cut to the needy while only saving some for himself, considering such actions to be a waste of valuable resources.

It didn't come as a surprise to the Laron when his father's accomplices ended up betraying him during a heist on the Callelan Governor's home, which led to his arrest and imprisonment. Left with no guardian to tend to his needs, a 12 year-old Laron was thrust into applying what little knowledge he had gained from his father in order to earn himself the next proverbial meal.

His activities started small; pickpocketing unsuspecting customers while they were browsing the various wares displayed in the markets sprawled across Callela. While what he collected was usually enough to cover his expenses for a single day, the method was simply too unreliable as the number of people visiting the marketplace fluctuated as well as the amount and the value of the goods they have on them. Soon enough, he was no longer satisfied with just getting by day after day. There was no way he could improve his life by just settling with what scrap he could find inside people's bags and pockets. He needed a bigger, more sustainable catch... and upon gazing at a particular pudgy merchant counting the coin he had earned selling his wares did Laron realize the answer had been right under his nose all along.

Thus Laron changed the targets of his pilfering from unsuspecting tourists to the merchants littered across Callela itself. His change of "perspective" seemed to pay off almost instantly as he saw an exponential increase in profits with such a minor adjustment in his operations. Yet his criminal activities were short lived after being caught red-handed stealing a vat of prized Golden Great Bee honey and a couple of rare, seasonal Snow Potatoes which was regarded as a valuable commodity for their tenacious ability to grow even in the harshest winters. Instead of turning him in, however, the farmer offered the boy a new home.

Apparently, the farmer by the name of Carson Bauer was one of the beneficiaries of Fritjov's selflessness. When his land was about to be seized by the bank after failing to pay off a mortgage he had taken to be used as capital for his crops, Fritjov had given him enough money in jewels to pay off the mortgage as well as provide him enough capital for three harvests. Carson wanted to repay Fritjov's kindness but knew very well he was powerless to help the incarcerated thief, himself. That's why he decided to take care of Fritjov's boy instead as a way of repaying the kindness he had received from the boy's father.

After experiencing the kindness of a complete stranger whom his father had unhesitatingly aided in the past did Laron come to understand Fritjov's behavior. On that day, he swore to follow in his father's footsteps by helping the destitute families of Callela the same way Fritjov Adelaide had helped them in the past.

Nowadays, he would sometimes offer his services as a thief-for-hire to anybody who could afford them so long as he is paid up front and given a small cut of whatever items he steals for his clients.

Abilities:

  • Lockpicking - the ability to open locks with varying degree of difficulty depending on the complexity of the lock.
  • Merchant's Eye - an ability that allows the Laron to accurately appraise the value of any object.
  • Knife Proficiency - Most of Laron's knowledge with knife fighting was taught to him by his father when he was still a thief-in-training. Still, he displayed an unusual precociousness with the usage of bladed weapons that surprised even his father. While in no way a master of the art of knife fighting, Laron considers his skills to be above the skills of an average thief.
  • Night's Veil - an ability he acquired from a ring he had stolen from an eccentric, and rich individual's collection. The ring originally acquired Laron's interest due to its intricate yet somehow foreign design and immediately thought it had some value. He also retrieved a piece of faded parchment which he assumed had some connection with the ring. However he learned about the true nature of the ring when he decided to read the only intelligible word written on the parchment, "Ephemeral", while wearing the strange piece of jewelry out of boredom and realized it has the ability to grant its wielder invisibility upon activation. However, he also discovered that he can only maintain the ability for a maximum of 7 minutes per day.

    Since the origin of the ring itself remains a mystery, he speculated that he had yet to unlock the secrets and the true potential of the ring. Since the artifact proved to be invaluable in his line of work, Laron decided to keep the artifact to himself instead of selling it on the black market like he usually did to all the valuable trinkets he came across. "It's nothing more than a personal investment towards the continued success of my "career" were the words he used to convince himself to make such a decision.

"I'll do what needs to be done… on my own terms."

Name: Essien Goldwind

Age: 27

Race: Human, Lidaran

Class: Statesman [Illusionist]

Personality & Background:

The Goldwinds of Phy'rak, a municipality-classed mountain range in western Lida, are an old "family" composed of several clans that settled the region ages past. The towering peaks protected the rest of Lida from the bitter storms rising in from the Gualtierran seas and its crags housed scores of hostile Magicals, which nearly killed initial attempts to live off the land. Then, for reasons left alone by the succeeding generations, these Magicals let them be — and disappeared from the length of the range without a trace. Only when the settlers discovered an extensive network of deep caves, most of which seemed to have been deliberately blocked, did it become apparent how the violent Otherfolk departed so quietly and so swiftly. With their security assured, the pioneers and their children carved massive interconnected, impenetrable keeps — marvels hewn entirely from stone — onto the mountain itself. They slowly worked their way through the underground labyrinth, reopening collapsed tunnels and finding hoards upon hoards of a precious metal — namely gold — upon their ingress deeper into the range, the latter of which was traded with the brave few that visited their high abodes. As time passed and the stone citadel welcomed more and more outsiders, the boundaries between the old clans blurred, until they were but a single tribe: the Gold-Winds.

Or so the stories say.

The current hyperfixation with technology and steelworks during the past centuries has slowly drove the Gold-Winds into irrelevance; their stonework and craftsmanship, which used to be regarded with respect and awe throughout the continent, were waved away in favor of metal monstrosities and clockwork cities. In addition, Alexander Sucre's Republic stripped down the old economic system in favor of paper currency, even further limiting their resources and cutting back one of, if not the most valuable commodity they had to offer. Crippled and shoved from the spotlight, the clan sunk into an isolationist stage.

Stubborn, ambitious, and possessing a certain streak of ruthlessness, it made sense for Essien to pursue a path that could bring the clan back from the brink of insignificance. Although he grew up not wanting for anything— the Gold-Winds, even after eschewing the Steel Enclave's "upgrades," had learned to be self-sufficient the hard way, and despite his humble beginnings his father was a learned man — he was dissatisfied with the clan's state-of-affairs. But seeing that he was, technically, supporting a "pro-Magical" organization with the political clout provided by a small-time, backwater district… He had his work cut out for him, and even after two years in Alexandria as an active member of the Congress, every day never failed to feel like wrangling with crocodiles in a poisonous swamp.

Abilities:
* Essien is well-versed in common fields of education, such as History, Economics, and the Social Sciences, etc. His job and background has added to his worldly knowledge, but don't expect him to understand and decipher an ancient tome written in a dead tongue.
* A smart and perceptive man, but has little to no combat training. Essien has enough presence of mind to duck when a punch is aimed his way, but the situation could go south very fast from there. Conscious of this deficiency, Essien usually takes the time to plan around violent encounters… or start the fight with a significant advantage.
* Naturally predisposed towards learned arguments and cold, solid facts, it took Essien some time to get used to the slick talking and underhanded tactics used in local politics. Unwilling to sacrifice his integrity and the "most reasonable and objective approach," he has fused both tactics over the years and is an excellent conversationalist and adept rhetorician, if he so chooses to extend the effort.
* An adequate illusionist, although Essien feels his full potential has yet to be realized thanks to a lack of serious training. At the moment, his illusions are aimed towards physical redirection than invisibility, and he is keenly aware of his latent skill in hypnotism. However, the dangers presented to his person and reputation by the latter, as well as its ethical issues, has long dissuaded Essien from using it on people — he preferred winning arguments "naturally," anyway.

Extra:
* Essien "inherited" the Lucieri Phy'rak branch from his mother, who was also a Senator in her day, and seems to keep it running out of a sense of duty than true faith in its ideals.
* The second youngest Senator in the Congress, preceded by 23-year-old Vermillion Etis of the Pan-Vesuvius District. Both are... tolerated by the other Senators.
* His magic is... well-hidden, to great pains, and if he could he would spend his entire life with it kept that way. Despite this, he has an arcane focus in the form of a rather ostentatious earring.
* A workaholic and an insomniac. Hooray!
* Likes odd flavor combinations.
* Likes order.

Height: 6'7 l Weight: 158 lb l Wingspan: 13'0

An avian Magical who appears more human than bird. Liam has no problem passing himself off as an albino human when he conceals his eyes. These are the one trait that gives him away. Unlike human eyes, his orange sclera bores deep into your soul. Their intensity is so shocking that people miss his soulless black pupils. These are the eyes of a predator. No smile can ever erase away the intimidation that radiates from his piercing stare. Hence, his poker face save for the rare occasions when he lets his guard down.

The rest of his features are more alluring. Soft, thin feathers run down his head in place of hair. They form a gentle curtain that softens his angular face. His hands and feet are so surprisingly human-like that many a scholar have stopped him to get a closer look. On each hand and foot, he has five well-formed digits. The skin on them while coarser and almost scaly is barely distinguishable from the skin covering the rest of him. His nails are different story. While they are short, they're more similar to a cat's well-trimmed claws than a human nails. Liam prevents himself from leaving deep gouges in the walls and furniture by wearing thick leather gloves and boots at all times. He also tries not to engage in fist fights with his gloves off! The last thing he'd want is to get blood on his spotless clothes.

"The less said the better."

Name: Liam Fields
Age: 58 (Human Equivalent: 22)
Race: Kurara
Class: Stormbringer (Ice & Wind)

Weapon: Iron Fan *Similar to the fan wielded by Temari in the Naruto anime
* Increases the range of his elemental attacks
* Able to use wind-based attacks without magic
* Blocks incoming physical attacks or projectiles

Personality & History

He can't remember life outside the Circle. Liam entered the Circle at the age of 25, the equivalent of a human eight-year-old, and he was introduced as Master Odwick's ward. Precocious. Prodigious. People were so in awe of him that he was often left alone. He didn't mind, because the solitude suited him. He enjoyed exploring the world the way he wanted and having the freedom to dictate the pace of his education. Life was perfect the way it was!

His introverted nature is the hallmark of his personality. He didn't care much for people and he hoped they respected his opinion. Relationships, other than the ones he had with his guardian and the Magemother, were purely transactional. He did what he needed to and that was it. He didn't care if the other person fulfilled their end of the bargain or not. Master Odwick decided that had to change. He believed Liam won't reach his fullest potential if his grown up ward never learned to care about others. This kickstarted a new phase in Liam's life. He was tasked with assisting several Circle scholars with their fieldwork. He needed to be in charge of their teams. The hiring, the negotiations and the accounts. Liam hated it but he trudged on as he felt obligated to make the Master Elementalist happy. He owed the man so much.

Self-discovery isn't an easy process. Liam has become a little better at interacting with people, although he still prefers being alone. He realised that being polite isn't enough. There are certain skills, some of which he hasn't identified yet, that he needs to learn in order to communicate more effectively. He decided he'd work on them slowly. Emotions … being genuine, he figured he'd never really feel comfortable with that. It requires way too much time and effort. He rather use that energy doing something else.

Abilities
* Cryokinesis (ice manipulation)
* Spirarekinesis (wind manipulation)
* Tessenjutsu (martial arts involving a battle fan)

Extra
* He is very protective of Master Odwick
* He has a hard time lying, because he doesn't see any value in deceiving someone.
* He enjoys cerebral activities (solving puzzles, decoding ancient languages, etc)
* He isn't a picky eater but he's super particular when it comes to cleanliness.
* His philosophy: food is just food. There's no need to enjoy it! Eat it because you must.
* He is very tightfisted when it comes to money. He hates spending on "frivolous things".
* He reads all sorts of books even romance novels … they are still books.
* He has the tendency to overanalyze things.
