Murder Game XIII: Restless in Rapture

Jacob would have found two bottles of Vodka, preparing to light them up before his sister plunged into the swarm head on.

"EVIE!"

It was brave, it was courageous and gallant....It was also incredibly stupid. There was nothing for blade or bullet to mark. No sinew or blood vessel, no flesh to pierce. There was only the swarm and in leaping into the thick of it, Evie would have been subjected to the following. First the swarm would have devoured their way through the openings in her face, down ears and eyes and mouth. The rest of the flesh would soon follow as senses died and only pain remained as they forced their way down her throat. Lungs would fail, the heart would be avoided so as to draw our her pain and in a gurgling death rattle, Evie would have been the first victim of Jack the Daemon.

Thankfully, fate had other plans.

From the opening, Owlman's explosives flew in, disrupting the swarm and disengaging Evie away from Jack's grasp to his howl of fury and pain.

And then one hit the tank.

The explosion rocked the place, Jack roaring in an inarticulate howl, before suddenly becoming a laugh of glee.

For there laid Jacob, dead near the explosion proximity as the flies descended to feast on his corpse.

One Frye Twin died, that another may be saved.

And Jack reformed, turning to the remaining two as he howled.

"YOU'RE NEXT! I WILL CONSUME ALL OF YOU! SO DIE LIKE GOOD LITTLE DOGS!"

Owlman would find his way free of obstruction.

The explosion rocked the building. Mystique, still in the form of the Big Daddy, could not rest. The flies were still attacking, and the bullets were flying thanks to the fools who fired their guns thinking an insect swarm could be stopped by bullets.

The pseudo-Big Daddy had to concentrate on defending himself from the attacks, and as could not shapeshift back. Nor could he tell those firing guns to stop firing, as he could not speak while in the form of the Big Daddy.

He had lost track of the Little Sister in the confusion. At the moment, his ideas were to either head upstairs after Owlman, or try to leave this building altogether. Whatever force was behind these flies was too powerful for them to face on their own.

He moved toward the door, hoping to reach a spot where he could get a break from the flies. Would destroying the building altogether get rid of the source of the flies? An interesting strategy, but as long as he was stuck in the form of the Big Daddy, he could not convey it to his companions. And he would have to get away from the flies before he could safely shapeshift.

"Not if I can kill you first I won't be." Medea stated after hearing the voice comment on the body of Jacob Frye. Medea didn't really get to know Frye but did know someone had to get even for the guy. Then her attention quickly moved to the events of where she was. She began to watch a bit closer for the bullets passing through or whatever other troubles might occur. Her own gun out and ready with her purse clutched to her side when she walked.

As the assassin poked his head out and took in the entire gory scene of the cultists' former HQ, Jesse spotted the top-hat wearing man and smirked, "Well, if it ain't Mister Jacob. Welcome to Columbia, the closest thang to Heaven I've found yet though with a looser set of entrance requirements than I would imagine..."

"Another one of the Rapture flock, Dewitt. His name's Jacob and he was down there with his sister," With that explanation out of the way, the preacher walked over to the fellow dead man and held his hand out to the man, "Anyways, good to see you again. Mind tellin' me what's been happenin' down in the sea?"

Don't worry though, I've been trying to find a way back down when I haven't helping Miss Dewitt here with the town's cultist problem," Jesse explained before tilting his head as Jacob mentioned a shiny shooter, "You mean Scaramanga? Oh, about him... Pushed him off one of the flying boats around here."

Beat.

"Anyways, try findin' yourself a gun around here along some shells for this here shotgun of mine. Ain't exactly safe around here in the clouds."

With every breath, it felt like the air was cutting her lungs apart.. Her vision was fading in and back out again... The pain was absolutely unbearable. Evie was curled up on the floor, squirming in pain. Any time she would try to scream, it would only make it worse. And just when she thought she was in the worst pain imaginable, she heard Jack start to laugh.

Her ears were still ringing, but his laughter was stronger still. Whatever the rest had tried to do to beat Jack, it either hadn't worked, or he had effectively driven Evie mad. She rolled to her side, wincing in pain, when she Jacob lying motionlessly on the ground. Her eyes widened and she furrowed her eyebrows, trying to call out for her brother, but only slight groaning and wincing would come out of her mouth. Very slowly but surely, she would start crawling. Crawling a distance across the room, she paid no more mind to anyone else. Right now, she just wanted to see her brother's face.

Evie finally reached her brother's lifeless body, quickly swatting away all the flies that were on him, then sitting beside him and turning him over to look at his face. Jacob Frye was gone. His usually joyful, boyish face had turned to a sad painting of deep red and black, and upon seeing it, Evie cringed and gasped for air. She wanted to scream, but her lungs still wouldn't allow her enough breath to do so. Placing a hand on the back of his head, she lifted it up slightly and looked at him. "J-Jacob..." she managed to mumble, as if expecting him to suddenly open his eyes and smile at her, as he had pranked her countless times before. But he didn't smile or move a single muscle, not a single breath even left his lips anymore. Jacob Frye was gone.

Suddenly feeling dizzy and breathless, Evie stared at her dead brother's face for a little more until she knew that she had to close her eyes to prevent her tears from coming out. That's what she'd been taught by Father. Never let them see you cry. Evie Frye had always been a collected woman, in complete control of her feelings, not having shed a tear since the death of her father. But there was no Evie Frye without Jacob Frye. They had always been the Frye twins, just the two of them, helping those in need and having fun along the way. How was she going to do all this by herself?

Resting her forehead on Jacob's, Evie lost all composure and cried. She didn't care about Jack anymore. She wouldn't care if Jack succeeded and killed every single person in this twisted game right now. She wouldn't give one damn if he made the entire building collapse on top of then... her world had already collapsed.

Her ears were still ringing, but his laughter was stronger still. Whatever the rest had tried to do to beat Jack, it either hadn't worked, or he had effectively driven Evie mad. She rolled to her side, wincing in pain, when she Jacob lying motionlessly on the ground. Her eyes widened and she furrowed her eyebrows, trying to call out for her brother, but only slight groaning and wincing would come out of her mouth. Very slowly but surely, she would start crawling. Crawling a distance across the room, she paid no more mind to anyone else. Right now, she just wanted to see her brother's face.

Evie finally reached her brother's lifeless body, quickly swatting away all the flies that were on him, then sitting beside him and turning him over to look at his face. Jacob Frye was gone. His usually joyful, boyish face had turned to a sad painting of deep red and black, and upon seeing it, Evie cringed and gasped for air. She wanted to scream, but her lungs still wouldn't allow her enough breath to do so. Placing a hand on the back of his head, she lifted it up slightly and looked at him. "J-Jacob..." she managed to mumble, as if expecting him to suddenly open his eyes and smile at her, as he had pranked her countless times before. But he didn't smile or move a single muscle, not a single breath even left his lips anymore. Jacob Frye was gone.

Suddenly feeling dizzy and breathless, Evie stared at her dead brother's face for a little more until she knew that she had to close her eyes to prevent her tears from coming out. That's what she'd been taught by Father. Never let them see you cry. Evie Frye had always been a collected woman, in complete control of her feelings, not having shed a tear since the death of her father. But there was no Evie Frye without Jacob Frye. They had always been the Frye twins, just the two of them, helping those in need and having fun along the way. How was she going to do all this by herself?

Resting her forehead on Jacob's, Evie lost all composure and cried. She didn't care about Jack anymore. She wouldn't care if Jack succeeded and killed every single person in this twisted game right now. She wouldn't give one damn if he made the entire building collapse on top of then... her world had already collapsed.

At first, his attack was going well... His Owlrang had pierced the veil of insects as he had expected, arcing towards it's target, it seemed like victory was almost assured as the device impaced the silhouete of the abomination that had seemed to be guiding these bugs... Until the Owlrang caved clean through, without going off... What had went wrong? The device had hit right on point! And then, it hit him... The figure WAS those insects... But it was too late; explosive Owlrangs did not have an callback function for a very good reason... The last thing it's user would want is it to return to them just in time to go off, and blow themselves up. Though he had expected the Owlrang to go off harmlessly on a section of the wall, a faint tinking sound could be heard as the Owlrang embedded itself into something oddly... Metallic. It didn't take Owlman long to run through the list of possibilities, and realize what this meant... And then, the Owlrang detonated, creating an much bigger explosion than the device itself was meant to... It was clear that it had embedded itself into some sort of explosive tank.

Owlman stood there, stoic as ever as the smoke from the explosion enveloped him... He noticed that someone had been caught in midst of the explosion; Jacob... Normally, he would barely even bat an eye at this sort of thing... The people he usually worked with were very aware of the risks, and their deaths were quickly glossed over, but here... This particular death was the result of a fatal error on his part, an error that normally would have cost him his rank in the Crime Syndicate, if he had still been part of it. This wasn't quite the matter of revenge, but... More of a matter of his ego, he stood still for a moment, assessing what exactly to do next... And then, suddenly, he had an idea.

Smiling rather cockily, drowning his bruised ego (and possibly feelings of guilt too that he isn't quite aknowledging) in a sudden rush of andrenaline, he suddenly deployed an airtight mask which slid over his exposed mouth... It was the only spot in his suit that was vulnerable to those insects; this left him approximately 10 minutes of protection against the swarm, until his air ran out and he would need to open this very mask once more. A quick sweep of the area seemed to reveal a hovering cloth mask in the air, the item in question was something that he suspect was keeping those insects in place... Though, his most immediate concern were the insects swarming everywhere around him, they wouldn't make taking out the Mask easy at all, and they would suffer more casualties if they weren't stopped. However, seeing how the insects had scattered in the wake of his previous Owlrang, he had an idea.

Drawing another Owlrang from his toolbelt, he threw it towards the swarm of insects gathering around Evie... This Owlrang was non-explosive, but it's key feature was it's ability to return to it's sender, which it would... Once it made its way through the swarm of insects, and scattered them for the time being.

The buzzing of the flies from the apartment he just entered grew louder, he slowly backed away from the apartment room and joined up with the group as the flies joined together to take form of a man, Houston thought to himself that this day can't get any weirder. Houston took aim at the buzzing flies with his Bernetti and fired five rounds at it, Hoping it would have an effect on the flying hostile. Though, he'd quickly realise that he's fighting a losing fight. "We're gonna need a large can of bug spray if we're gonna take that thing down, Anyone got any bright ideas?" Houston looked to his group for someone to step up to help out fight the buzzing menace.

Down below, the others would be facing problems of their own, the bullets passing through and in the midst of each other.​

Not that it didn't hurt, like a lot, but she was able to suppress an agonized cry of pain because of three things. 1)It was in and out faster than shitty Taco Bell filth sloshing through the digestive system. 2) There was a healer in the group that could fix it up. And 3) ...There were more pressing issues.

"Yeah, I do!" She answered his question, dashing forwards towards the shooter. Once close enough, she tried to smack the gun out of his hands and then bitch smack the guy himself, right in his face. "The hell is WRONG with you??? THEY ARE FLIES, YOU DON'T SHOOT AT FLIES! THAT'S LIKE BRINGING A BATTLE TANK TO DEAL WITH A SQUIRREL! COLLATERAL DAMAGE OUT THE ASS! I CAN HIT YOU WITH A LAWSUIT!"

Medea didn't really get to know Frye but did know someone had to get even for the guy. Then her attention quickly moved to the events of where she was. She began to watch a bit closer for the bullets passing through or whatever other troubles might occur. Her own gun out and ready with her purse clutched to her side when she walked.

However, he knew this would leave Owlman, the Inquisitor, and the Fryes likely trapped unless they found another way out.

Scott batted the flies away with his lacrosse stick, he moved to the left, nearly being hit by the stray bullets and made a beeline towards the exit. He looked over at Gwenpool and saw that she had been injured. He looked at the exit and saw Mystique or rather Big Daddy that was once Mystique and was silent. " Are all of you okay?" He asked, once they were in the hallway. He could take away their pain if anyo of them were injured.

Jacob would have found two bottles of Vodka, preparing to light them up before his sister plunged into the swarm head on.

"EVIE!"

It was brave, it was courageous and gallant....It was also incredibly stupid. There was nothing for blade or bullet to mark. No sinew or blood vessel, no flesh to pierce. There was only the swarm and in leaping into the thick of it, Evie would have been subjected to the following. First the swarm would have devoured their way through the openings in her face, down ears and eyes and mouth. The rest of the flesh would soon follow as senses died and only pain remained as they forced their way down her throat. Lungs would fail, the heart would be avoided so as to draw our her pain and in a gurgling death rattle, Evie would have been the first victim of Jack the Daemon.

Thankfully, fate had other plans.

From the opening, Owlman's explosives flew in, disrupting the swarm and disengaging Evie away from Jack's grasp to his howl of fury and pain.

And then one hit the tank.

The explosion rocked the place, Jack roaring in an inarticulate howl, before suddenly becoming a laugh of glee.

For there laid Jacob, dead near the explosion proximity as the flies descended to feast on his corpse.

One Frye Twin died, that another may be saved.

And Jack reformed, turning to the remaining two as he howled.

"YOU'RE NEXT! I WILL CONSUME ALL OF YOU! SO DIE LIKE GOOD LITTLE DOGS!"

Owlman would find his way free of obstruction.

I pressed on still in my desperate search for the other mask I was sure to be near, overlaying the phonograph from before. It was still a guess and it was all I had, having no inkling of the entity that comprised the daemon we faced now. I bemoaned the lack of knowledge yet I found myself resolute in the face of adversity, fully trusting myself in both my capability and the God-Emperor. Somehow, some reason, I found myself calm throughout the storm as it were, confident in that all would pass and be well at last. Little did I know my judgement was askew in the thick of it all; I thought, after the fact, that perhaps my faculties were led astray by whatever noxious mixture had been envenomated into my bloodstream.

An inquisitor in his line of work is not allowed a moment's reprieve to regret or be stricken with pangs of remorse or despair; it was another aspect to the Inquisitor's work and all was to be expected to taken in stride. Mark my words truly, we are still human, albeit hardened so and weary of the grim nature of reality's, and we find the time to afford ourselves that reprieve exactly whether it be amidst warp travels or vacationing periods.

But back to matters of importance at hand; I swiftly found the cloth mask there in its corner, sequestered away within atop a phonograph, the very same one used to regale our ears with the honky tonk nonsense from earlier. I reared back, the power-blade held aloft overhead in angled position fully ready to strike down the daemon. In essence anyhow. That was when the explosion occurred, the tank obviously going off by some mean, later which I discovered to be by the hands of one of the owl-motiffed man's explosive devices. The shockwave was powerful, the reverberation shrieking across the air as to scatter the infernal flies momentarily and cause me to bowl forth a couple pace's distance. The abrupt detonation played havoc on my senses, my ears ringing and my balance wibbling-wobbly now. I knew I had no luxury in way of time, the fact made apparent with the resumed flesh-gnawing of the bastard daemon-bugs. I recollected myself and reconstructed my posture from prior and struck downward, heavy handed with the sense of the Emperor's furor burning within my blade.

"YOU CAN NEVER ESCAPE ME! I'LL FIND YOU! I AM NOW ETERNAL AND IF IT TAKES ME TILL PERDITION TO RID ALL OF YOU FRYE'S FROM EXISTENCE, I WILL SELL MY SOUL A THOUSAND TIMES AGAIN!"

It was a blood-curdling scream, borne of hatred as Jack's old mask burned and Jack himself, was once more removed from the world as his bugs died and dissipated into a mass of dead flies. He was gone.

But he'll be back.

The switch would be found in the Dark Room on the third floor, where all the bodies were laid out and used as maggot fodder. Food for the flies, though all the maggots were dead too. Also located was another audio recording, which when played would produce the following.

Audio Log

Static at first echoes loudly, before the rasp of heavy breathing follows. The voice is that of a young woman, laden with pain and terror to the point of exhaustion. What nightmares she must have seen since coming is unclear, but they have exacted a heavy toll.

"My watch has broken and there is no day or night I can measure. How long I've been down here, I'm not sure. Even if no one will ever hear this, I will record this so as to keep what sanity I have. I must not succumb. I must not let my mind fade.

My name is Sabrina Spellman. I was born a witch, my coven is the Multiverse Emergency Unit. In my bones, I can sense it. The corruption of the city they call Rapture. Its a corpse, full of pus and maggots and my magic is reacting to it. And like a corpse, it attracts... Scavengers."

An empty sob echoes and she continues.

"I can't sleep. I dare not sleep. All I can do is run, when the drums begin. Oh god!"

The recording ends there.

In terms of loot, the party would find a strange artifact. Apparently, it was something Jack was guarding.

In the sudden deep silence that followed Jack's screaming, Evie would continue sobbing desperately, her eyes tightly shut as she keeps her arms around her brother. Everything around her was calmer now, but in her head, things were still a mess. She still heard Jack's insane laughter, messing up her thoughts. Every time she made a sound or inhaled, a flash of pain would run through her chest.

"He's back..." she mumbled softly to herself with a hoarse voice, "I'm sorry Jacob... I'm so sorry..."

Scott paused, as he considered his options. He could follow the Big Daddy who had become Mystique out the door, or perhaps he could. He couldn't leave the twins behind, not when he owed them for not killing him yet.

He raced upstairs and paused when he saw it. Jacob or rather from the dying scent, Jacob's corpse. It wasn't the first time he had dealt with loss. " Evie, are you okay?" He asked, concerned as he saw the switch and didn't go to flip it. There was an audio log and somethign else, an unnerving artifact. Artifacts never turned out well either.

Chapter Three
"The Calm"

With the switches now open and the watches leading them back to where they once were, the groups would soon enough find themselves at the center of Apollo Square once again. The arrows pointed towards a rather grizzly scene.

The gallows had still fresh bodies hanging from them indicating that they saw a lot of use. The radio would spark to life as both groups arrived. "You're almost there people. Look under the gallows to the left, you should find a piece of metal sticking out. Flip that."

Someone would oblige and go under the gallows and finding a very out of place piece of metal sticking out from the ground they'd proceed to flip it. The debris in front of the gallows would shake open leaving a secret passage that would lead them to their destination.

Once the last person stepped inside the door would close up behind them once again. "Okay, take the tunnel to the left until you get to a split and from there go right, forward, left and right."

Symmetra took the lead using her glove to light up area and followed Caira's instructions, the group in turn following closely. And then... Rumble rumble rumble.

Suddenly, a stroke of bad luck would befall the group, as intense vibrations could be sensed as they'd all be able to feel as though the structural integrity of the particular area they were in at the moment seemed to greatly weaken. Before anyone knew it, giant debris from the ceiling would fall down, hitting the ground with loud thuds, a small amount of water leaking from where the debris had once resided.

"Uh... I think it's time we move, guys!" Gwen exclaimed, and with that, your journey to wherever Caira was leading you to would become a lot more hectic all of a sudden as more and more heavy debris from the ceiling would fall onto the ground as you would all have to make a break for it.

Fortunately, the attack of the falling debris wouldn't last very long, but in the process, Sean Grant and Lando Calrissian would be crushed underneath the debris. Still, there was nothing you could do for them. The sudden abruptness of the debris falling and stopping made one wonder if this was actually a deliberate trap set by Handsome Jack, one of his many so-called "presents," but either way, maybe it didn't matter, as the damage was already done anyway.

With that, they would continue moving on. Soon enough they would find a heavy duty door in front of them. Symmetra would knock hard on the door until a slit opened up in it. "Finally!"

The voice they heard was a familiar one, even with out the static. As the door was opened they would stand face to face with Caira.

"It's an honor finally meeting you all in person! Come in, come in! Reyna's going to be happy to finally meet you guys!"

After closing the door behind them she'd lead the group through a corridor into a larger area with a number of tables and crates with supplies around the sides of the room that resembled a makeshift mess hall.

"Took your sweet time." They heard someone say.

"The name's Reyna, I guess you could say I'm the commander of this place." Some among the group would recognize her voice from one of the audio logs they had found earlier. "You've gone through a lot of shit, so I suggest you get something to eat and drink." She motioned towards the corner with crates filled with an assortment of canned food as well as some very clean looking water.

"I'll call over the rest once you'd settled down, but all I'm going to say is. Welcome to the Resistance."

"Indeed. So they're finally here."

"I'm almost impressed, but as Reyna said, doesn't look like you're all in very much of a hurry," Another unfamiliar voice, this time one belonging to a male, would speak out. From above, you would all be able to spot a blonde man standing atop a nearby catwalk, looking down at you with a stern expression. Lucifer, Ellis, and Clare would perhaps recognize him as a member of the organization that connected the three of them, and as for the others...

Clearing his throat, he'd speak up again.

"The name's Major Revolver Ocelot, though just Ocelot will do. That's all you need to know for now," he gruffly introduced himself, briefly directing his attention over to Reyna, "So they're our best bet at getting out of here? Hmph. I suppose we could do worse, at least."

"Make yourself at home. That is, before you help us help you get back to your actual homes."

Another young woman came out of a back room. She wore golden armor adorned with a purple sash. On her back was a golden spear. "I'm the other Reyna. Daughter of Bellona, and Praetor of the XII Legion. Though, I suppose none of that matters now." She said in an astute tone. She muttered something under her breath. She looked at the ragtag group gathered before her.

"Welcome, though. I'll let you get acquainted with everything. Feel free to ask me any questions." She said, leaning against the door.

"In any case, just rest up for now. We've been monitoring you for some time, and we understand that you've been through a lot, so just take a moment to catch your breath for now, and then we shall summon you for our next course of plan," Ocelot said.

Sigh.

Hopefully from here, things would start looking up, right?

What an exhausting ordeal so far. So much more of their members dead, especially after seeing the haunted faces of those who came from the suites. Lucifer frowned and then immediately headed for Major Ocelot, pausing briefly before asking him flat out.

"Agent Lucifer. Reserve member, M.E.U. Does this ring any bells sir?"

If he was the one he knew, then perhaps he'd have a greater idea of what was going on.

"The Calm"

Sigh.

Hopefully from here, things would start looking up, right?​

"Oh thank god, resting time." She remarked in utter relief, slowly exhaling and letting herself fall backwards onto the ground. "I really really really really needed this, there's not enough reallys I can shove into that sentence to properly express just how much I freaking needed it. That and a shower but that can wait I guess. Also!" She held her free arm up, waving from where she was lying down. "Miss Kind Healer who fixed me up last time, would ya mind uh...doing it again? Please? I'm sorry but it hurts. The pain of fools."
