It was like watching a man trying to reach the end of a rainbow as a child. You didn't know why he never kept going because you hadn't realized yet that the 'pot of gold' never existed. Then years later you found out the reality of the situation and while you do understand, you just feel sad that the 'end of the rainbow' never happened.

And just like this scene, two guys who obviously like two different people won't feel attracted to each other in that way. Thus the kiss that never happened.
