  • Welcome, to Theralune.

  • w06iwz.jpg
Theralune has long been a nation of relative peace. Civil war, rebellion, and crime plague its past, as for any nation, but no great calamities have tarnished its history. However, rumors have been spreading of curious experiments taking place on the northern island of Komiir, home of the ever-tinkering gnomes. They say they've been experimenting with genetic mutations in pokemon, working to create a powerful force to aid in the advancement of Theralune. Unfortunately, the gnomes were not prepared to control what they created and now, word spreads of a mighty beasts ravaging the lands, growing, feeding, and reproducing. It is not yet known what this creature is, but the king of the gnomes has summoned the greatest heroes from across the lands to combine their efforts into tracking it down, and defeating it. There's loot in it for all, but more than that, the threat, if left unmanaged, could mean destruction for all.

    2cxjc6c.jpg

In an adventure of pokemon, high fantasy, and table-top feels, you and your team will work together to stop this mutated beast from overrunning the lands. Play as an elf, a dwarf, a human, or a gnome, and venture out into a world filled with pokemon to track down the mutant and talk some sense into the pesky, meddling royal gnome tinkerers. This isn't a gym-based story, nor is it a classic ten-year-old-on-a-journey tale. No, this is a grand, fantasic adventure. Our story begins, in a tavern, as all the best do.

  • 2uhsphs.jpg

Combat is based on a simple level system explained below:
    • Common pokemon can level up to level 10.
    • Rare pokemon can level up to level 15
    • Legendaries can level up to level 20
    • Type advantages add +2 levels to any pokemon, for that battle
    • Type disadvantages remove -2 levels from any pokemon for that battle
Any pokemon can enter into a battle with a pokemon up to 1 level above it, once all calculations have been done. There are three tiers of battle: easy, medium, and hard. This will be explained using a lvl 5 fire type.
    • Easy: Pokemon BELOW your pokemon's level (ex: =/<4, with advantage, =/<6)
    • Medium: Pokemon at an EQUAL level to your pokemon's (ex: =5, with advantage =7)
    • Hard: Pokemon ONE LEVEL ABOVE your pokemon's. (ex: =/>6, with advantage, =/>8)
In each battle, the difficulty will indicate which roll you need to be successful. Required rolls are as follows:
    • Easy: =/>5 on d20
    • Medium: =/> 10 on d20
    • Hard: =/>15 on d20
To go after pokemon of higher levels, such as legendaries, you will need to utilize a teamwork method called "Stacking." This means you utilize numerous pokemon of the same level to gain additional levels for each. For example:
    • Facing a level 15 Legendary with a level 10, no advantage.
      • For each additional level 10, each pokemon gains 1 extra level
      • 1 x lvl 10 + 3 x lvl 10 = +3 levels to each = 4 x lvl 14 pokemon (DOABLE!)
If numerous players take part in a battle, a loot roll will determine who the pokemon decides to trust. The loot roll will only be preformed by GM's.

  • 2rem9h2.jpg
At the beginning of the roleplay, each player may bring with them up to two pokemon. All additional pokemon will be kept at home and may be transferred whenever they so choose, but these transferred pokemon are subject to travel time, leaving the player with a one pokemon deficit for the time of the exchange. As they advance as rangers, players maximum party size will increase.

Pokemon have up to three evolutions. Those with only two are considered "common pokemon" and evolve at level 5. Pokemon with three evolutions are considered rare pokemon and they evolve at levels 5 and 10. Legendary pokemon do not evolve.
Common: Max lvl: 10, evolves at lvl 5
Rare: Max lvl: 15, evolves at lvl 5 and lvl 10
Legendary: Max lvl: 20, does not evolve

    RANGER ABILITY
Ranger ability determines the capability of each player as a companion to the pokemon. A ranger with a low ability level won't be trusted or seen as worthy by higher level pokemon. Ranger ability is increased throughout the roleplay via "Ranger Ability Events" which allow the potential of the ranger to increase. If a ranger has a pokemon companion trying to level, the level will be held dormant until the ranger can increase his or her ability. This means that if you cannot increase your ranger ability, you will not lose pokemon levels.
    • RA 1 = pkmn 2
    • RA 2 = pkmn 4
    • RA 3 = pkmn 6
    • RA 4 = pkmn 8
    • RA 5 = pkmn 10
    • RA 6 = pkmn 12
    • RA 7 = pkmn 14
    • RA 8 = pkmn 16
    • RA 9 = pkmn 18
    • RA 10 = pkmn 20
Each pokemon will begin with FOUR moves in their moveset. At level 5, they gain an additional move, and continue to do so until their peak level, with the exception of gaining two moves at levels 10, 15, and 20.

Eh. We're pretty theater of the mind in my opinion. No need to conform to a RPG's game mechanics. We're just 'borrowing' the concept of Pocket Monsters.
Well that's not so much a pokemon thing as it is a D&D/PF thing. Chars don't get unlimited skills, they get a few and gain more with each level. Pokemon moves are essentially skills for companions.

But if everyone is against it I can't enforce it :)

IMMA

IMMA
IMMA

THAT WORD XD

And okay ^_^ Well, hmmm. I think we'll limit it to four moves, but as the pokemon grow, they can learn a new move for each level gained. Make it more like a companion from PF or D&D. So four moves to begin with maybe? 'Tis a good question. :)

Since the levels here doesn't work like the games i'm going to assume a pokemon can be given any type of move (I don't see why they can't learn TM and tutor moves naturally).

I should probably invest into s saddle for the Ponyta when I get a chance though, bareback riding is baaaaaad.
Even more bad when it happens to be a flaming horse.

And, uhm, I don't think a ponyta will be able to be ridden, tbh. It's only 3 ft tall. And super light. My rule of thumb is that a pokemon must be over 80 lbs to carry someone. Ponyta might have to wait until it evolves into rapidash.

I chose 80 lbs because while pokemon are strong, and while an 80 lb bird would never, IRL, be able to carry another 80 lbs, I had to draw the line somewhere. We can't all run around on 50 lb critters lol.
B-but Ash and another character was able to ride one in the anime. Also the Pokedex lists for for height and weight is inaccurate from what I read somewhere.

Edit: Plus there can be breeds of ponytas that can be big enough to be ridden (But I imagine it would be based on their age)

I would be more than perfectly fine playing a practically naked tribal elf warrior covered by nothing more than some foliage but that's just me.

I mean! Darn, I'm going to have to figure out something to drop then...
Otherwise you need to try and gather enough berries to feed them or hunt.
Yup, I'm going with hunting considering that's how she's been doing it for six years now traveling the world. Admittingly the ponyta riding was something I thought up of before there was an age limit to the characters and I was going to play a younger character.

Uh, alright. I'll modify my post in a few minutes. Trying to finish typing up for another RP thread.

OKAY: Here is the pokemon Move System.

Pokemon moves are the equivalent to skills for rangers. Your pokemon can learn any and all moves that the pokemon species can learn. No, a chatot can't learn "flash" because where is that light coming from? A Ponyta cannot learn water pulse. An ekans can't learn cut. I use Pokemondb.net for all my pokemon info, but feel free to use Serebii.

A level one pokemon starts with four moves. This moves are not related to battle. Your battles will be done on your own using whatever crazy techniques you want. This limit is to ensure all barriers on the journey aren't just removed because your pokemon know all moves. If your pokemon doesn't have cut, it can't cut through a thorny bush blocking the road. If it doesn't know flash? It can't light an entire cave. If it doesn't know a water move? It can't extinguish a forest fire.

We are using moves like skills to give the pokemon a role in the adventure beyond just battling. This allows them to be a growing part of combating the wilds and lets them grow in the process, becoming more and more useful.

How it works:
LVL 1 PKMN: 4 moves
LVL 5 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 6 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 7 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 8 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 9 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 10 PKMN: +2 moves
LVL 11 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 12 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 13 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 14 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 15 PKMN: +2 moves
LVL 16 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 17 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 18 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 19 PKMN: +1 move
LVL 20 PKMN: +2 moves

Furthermore, only pokemon over 80 lbs can carry characters. Again, I use the info provided on pokemondb.net

I'm hoping to have the IC ready tonight and we can start tomorrow. I'll be active most the day to help everyone get set to start :3 I know its a bit of hassel now, but trust me, this system will be so simple in the IC

Lol ash is a ten year old boy. They weigh 70 lbs soaking wet

Yea but there was another character who is probably older than ash riding the ponyta too.

I don't see why we have to strickly stick pokedex given weight and height, in the anime pokemon are rather inconsistent with size and such (Think how Ash's noctowl is smaller than the usual noctowl). It just makes it feel... Really limiting.

He brings up a point when you have some differences as huge as

Size Difference.png

For extra items, I don't think Daisuke really needs anything more than some basic rations for himself and his Pokemon. Maybe whatever amount of money that the GMs would deem appropriate as a full [but not well liked] member of a thieves' guild. I guess I'll work on the moveset soon. I was hoping to avoid it, but I consider the point of it.

O_O Well, using the pokedex removes a INFINITE amount of work from the GM's hands. Because if we don't use a premade system, then that means Mowkie and I have to go through and decide "okay how big is this, can we ride it, blah blah blah" and that's just unrealistic. We cannot moderate each of the 600+ pokemon. Ponyta is a pony pokemon. Rapidash is the horse, it's like Blitzel and Zebstrika.

I don't think it's limiting because in a few levels she will have a rapidash. It's a tabletop style RP. No new characters every have all the good stuff. Not only that, but there are literally hundreds of pokemon big enough to ride.

Not only that, but this is not the anime. Its not the game. It's not the manga. It's just an RP. Ash and whoever else don't matter lol. The pokedex sizes are the easiest way to go because they are predetermined.

You cannot be constantly making this "like the anime" because this is not the anime. I can't take every thing that's ever happened in the anime and make it exactly the same in a completely different world.

You guys have to take into account that Soul and I are already busting our asses making sure there is a simple enough system for you guys to understand that is fair for everyone and relatively easy to moderate. This is our spare time role play, and the limits we put on you are so we don't have complaints of unfairness later on. No GM likes to hear that.

To force us to moderate the unique specifics of each of the 600+ Pokemon according to the anime or games instead of predetermined standards would take us months, and it would be waaaay too stressful for us to go through all of that on top of giving you guys an awesome role play. It takes a lot of time and effort to put together something that won't die in a week. So please, understand where we come from as well.

I don't really mind not being able to ride now, but there is one thing that strikes me as odd now. What are the limits to pokemon breeds then? To take an example of dogs (but this is probably also the only big example), there are so many breeds of massively different kinds of dogs that in turn make them all fantastic at different things, are pokemon the same way or restricted to pokedex entries to the point the breeds are just unimportant fluff?

In any case, I'm going to shuffle my skills around again and play with more items assuming we are getting 15 now. Not like I'm going to be able to ride until my pokemon gets 4 more levels and it would make no sense to have knowledge of it beforehand.

For the most part, the breed specifics are more for fluff purposes. Combat is all based on dice, so you won't get bonuses just because your Pokemon happens to be somewhat larger or more nimble. We know it seems a little unfair, but in the end, this will keep everyone from creating overpowered chars.

In trusting player discretion, this will be the rule of thumb for breeds: If breeds are being used to get around restrictions, it will not be permissible. Otherwise, utilize breeds to make your pokmeon unique, if you so choose. EX: mowkie has a larger than normal absol, it's considered an alpha. It's stronger and bigger, but it cannot do anything that any other absol can't do. My eevee is a stockier breed. It's a bit faster, it's a bit stronger, but all eevees can do what it can do, maybe just not for as long or without complaint. We aren't altering the pokemon capabilities, simply making them suite their setting.

And you can still have knowledge of riding. I expressed already that my character would obviously know how to ride, but in terms of how I'm going to build my char, from a table top perspective, I'm not going to add riding skills because Im not using them. I don't think riding would come in handy so I choose to, strategically, place my points elsewhere. Once I get a rideable mount, then I would choose to put points into riding. It doesn't mean I have to pretend my char can't ride. If a mount appears, I simply say my char isn't comfortable riding that one, or that she doesn't feel right riding one that isn't hers. I use my creativity as a roleplayer to make the tabletop aspects work.

Question: How many people here have ever played a tabletop game?

No, it makes sense. Then you could possibly just have people making the breed "best at combat of the species" and stuff like that, not that I think you would allow those things in the first place.

The riding skill was to have been a result of taming the Ponyta and practicing it during her 6 years, but it's been established it is a pokemon that can't be ridden. Again don't really care I'll just get it once it becomes really applicable.

As someone who has been playing and GMing for over a decade, I'll say something that make other players at ease. Having proficiency in a skill in most systems means you can do said skill in a time of stress and conflict. The skills that you are placing a resource into character creation means that your character is skilled enough to do the action well. My character, Daisuke can probably most of those actions in the skill list. He just doesn't have a lot of profiency in the ones that I didn't put points into.

For example, everyone in a medieval world can ride a horse. However, not everyone can ride a horse in combat or do advanced riding techniques. I assume having a skill here (Riding 1) would mean your character is skilled enough to say do a chasing scene with a horse [or this case, a ridable Pokemon] and jump over a big tree log or something. Same can be said with things like Climbing. Obviously your character can climb most things. However, a Climbing skill check that requires a dice would mean that your character is trying to climb something difficult or you're in a big hurry to climb and don't have climbing equipment. Same with the all mighty Survival skill. Most characters can start a fire and set up a camp [given enough time]. However, only a character with Survival points invested will be able to do it quickly or in dire situations fast and efficiently.

That's exactly right, and I need to reiterate the fact that any skills you choose will be used primarily for events in the IC where you face a challenge and need to use a skill to get past it. EX: you see a purrloin stuck in a tree. Do a climbing check to see if you can get up to it to save it.

Any player can climb but without skill, you'll just scare it away.

Riding skill would be used in a check like this: You see a long jump that needs to be cleared, surely only by pokeback. Do a riding check to see if you make the jump.

Or

You need to chase down that bandit! Riding check to see if you can catch up to him and nab in him time!

Sounds good! Thanks for the heads up Rei!

Also, I have another friend joining, possibly two. So we're still aiming to start by tomorrow at the latest. But don't worry, once we start, there will be a bit of time before the quest gets moving so late joiners won't get left behind
