RIGHT, NOW, ONTO THE IMPORTANT THINGS -- LIKE WHY
@Cephalo SHOULDN'T CHANGE HER USERNAME SUPER OFTEN;
^ Do you see what I just did there? That's the first reason. I like being able to tag people. That becomes more difficult if I can't remember your name-of-the-week.
I ran into a similar issue a short while ago with this other RP I was running. There was a member who constantly changed her username. So, what did I do when the RP was moving really slowly and I was having a hard time getting everyone to post? Well, whenever I tried tagging her, I had to go back to the OP just to find a post that I knew for-sure was hers only because that had always been her post
just to make sure I was using the right username to tag her with. And even then, it hardly felt like a name. I felt like hardly anyone would even know who I was talking about. The only reason I used those names was so that I could tag her properly. After a while, when it became clear that she'd silently dropped out of the RP and that I didn't need to tag her anymore, I would just refer to her as she-who-has-many-names out of frustration whenever I needed to mention her to the other RPers.
I realize you'll probably be more dedicated than she was, but I also like being able to tag you. Oh, and you know what else I like doing?
Not needing to edit the OP in a thousand different places every time your name changes. I mean, do you even
know how many times your name is listed in the OP? I didn't have to do anything with Gwazi because, well,
he's still basically Gwazi even though his username is technically slightly different. But if you go by something completely different? And a name that's listed somewhere refers to you by a name that you haven't even used in a good long while, thus potentially being confusing to people who joined more recently than that? Yeah, that's annoying.
And it's not
just annoying from a GMing standpoint. It's annoying from simply an identity standpoint. Honestly, it already kind of bothers me that Iwaku lets you get username changes whenever you like (whereas on the Guild they had that one-time rule) because, through a series of name changes like this, it's so easy for almost an entire community to just completely forget who you are. Names are kind of an important thing to help us keep track of people. It's one thing if you change your name every once in a blue moon and give people time to get used to it, but if you do it often? Yeah, fuck if I know what to call you. I might not even immediately recognize you if you drop by the OOC and don't say something like "yeah I'm Ceph but I changed my name". And, I mean, if it was just you, then it might be annoying but at least I would recognize you as being that person who constantly changed usernames. That's basically what I did on that other RP I mentioned. But if, for whatever reason, someone else in this RP decided to do the same thing? Lord help us all. I'd never keep you guys straight.
If you want somewhat of a sad example of how easily a series of name changes can make a person so quickly forgotten -- does anyone remember a little online community for DSi users called Flipnote Hatena? No? I assumed not. Oh well, I'll continue anyway;
There was this one creator on Flipnote Hatena who made a Flipnote (little animations you can make on your DSi, for those of you who don't know) that got really popular and she got a lot of followers because of it. Looking back on it, the Flipnote was actually kind of stupid, since I'm pretty sure it was something like "I'm so lonely omg I just wish I had friends" and, being a 13-year-old, I thought it was just the saddest fucking thing or something so yeah I followed her. And she sort of became one of those 'famous' Flipnote creators because of it (and, given what a completely fucking broken service Flipnote Hatena was, rising to the top is actually pretty difficult). But then,
here's the thing... as I saw more Flipnotes from her, I started to realize that she kept changing her username. Often. Which I thought was a bit weird but I was kind of just like "eh" and didn't really care. Then I realized that, pretty rapidly, her Flipnotes stopped getting super-popular like that first one did. Until finally I saw she'd made another Flipnote like "I'm so lonely. Where did all my friends go?" and I thought "Well they probably all forgot about you cuz you don't have a name anyone can remember you by, and people probably un-followed you whenever they were cleaning out their list of creators they follow and thought 'who the fuck is this person? don't even remember following her' and then
boom you're done." Because you need a name that sticks if you want to be remembered. That applies not only to wanting to achieve internet fame but even something as small-scale as just wanting to be known by a group and not have people totally forget who you are.
We
need names. They serve a purpose. And when you destroy that purpose... it's impossible to keep track of who you even are.
I mean, another dumb example -- there was this really stupid cartoon I used to watch as a kid called "The Secret Show". It was about spies and stuff. And there was one guy who said that his name was changed daily -- as in, every episode they would refer to him by a different name for "security reasons". And, in every episode, there was a scene where he would say, "Now as you know, my name is changed daily, and today, you may call me..." and so forth. So, how did this work?
If you try to look up anything about this show or its characters, everyone refers to that character as "Changed Daily". Like, they use that as his name. Because, every episode, he at least says "my name is changed daily" and that's the only thing that's consistent. If you look up episode summaries, they will even use "Changed Daily" as his name instead of whatever his name is for that particular episode, just so that you know who they're talking about. Because it would otherwise be impossible to write a fucking Wikipedia article or w/e with him having a different name every episode. You
need something to refer to him by, and, thankfully, the fact that he said "my name is changed daily" in every episode gave us something consistent to use, whether the creators intended it or not.
So basically.
What I'm trying to say is.
Don't be Changed Daily.
It destroys the purpose of names.
