  • Name: Jamil Alvel
    Age: 17
    Gender: Male
    Class: Knight
Equipment: A spear, a talwar, a shield and the animated armour named Barbarossa (art from Monster Hunter Tri).
    Element: Water

Backstory: Jamil was one of many children born to a working class family in Redmouth; the port town under the control of the Minicucci family. Like many of his brothers and sister, he was made to help out the household from a young age to help keep his family fed. As his father was a sailor and his mother worked ungodly hours, Jamil and his siblings were raised by their grandparents. Often, Jamil and his brothers would pester their grandfather to tell the tall tales of his life as a sailor. Although only partly rooted in fact, his grandfather's stories enamored Jamil with the dangers and adventures of the sea.

Jamil would often find himself at the docks, trying to butter up to sailors to hear their stories as well. These men quickly learned that they could put the eager boy to work for just a bit of coin and a strong tale they'd be telling all the same later that night in the tavern. Jamil would run errands and even help unload ships. He applied as a shipwright's apprentice, even, but was denied apprenticeship as his family could not afford it.

Ultimately, though, rather than the shore work, Jamil dreamed of following in the footsteps of his father. When the opportunity presented itself, Jamil applied for the position of ship's boy and the same day, he bid his farewells to his family at the age of only nine. It all happened so fast, neither his mother or grandparents had the chance to stop him. The adventures he'd always dreamed of would be his to live, aboard a Minicucci vessel, which only made a short stop to resupply before they were back on their way.

It would be two years before Jamil returned; he'd become a ship's boy in heart and soul and his earnings were far greater than any of the proceeds he'd made at shore. However, two years is a long time for a child and returning home, it was clear he'd grown apart during his time at sea. Still, his siblings gathered around him to hear the tales they hoped their brother had lived, but despite his hard work, Jamil had no krakens or storms to sell.

It wouldn't be long until Jamil would make it onto his second journey, and quickly after his third. Recommended by his previous captain, Jamil joined another voyage. This ship transported exotic spices, a special gift from the Minicucci family to a friendly count. Excited this would look fantastic on his resume, a now thirteen year old Jamil didn't doubt for a second. If only he had...

The vessel was attacked by pirates, slaughtering and capturing most of the crew and plundering the cargo. They spared Jamil, thinking he could be put to good use scrubbing floors and serving rum. His new life quickly taught Jamil a number of survival tactics he'd never hoped to, from outclimbing and swimming any of the ruffians to holding his own with the sword. The first mate, rather amused by his wit and moxie, took it upon himself to make Jamil master his blade, throw a spear and hold his liquor.

In a cruel twist of events, the pirateship one day got caught in a storm and collided with a dangerous reef most trade routes circled around. Jamil failed to secure a place in one of the lifeboats and so fought the sea for his life. Through immense force of will and ability, Jamil escaped the promise of Davy Jones' locker and found shelter in one of the shipwrecks by the reef.

When the storm finally calmed, Jamil began to explore what was left of the ships stranded and destroyed. He searched for boards and rope he got tie together to build a raft. If his memory had served him well, he knew there was a popular trade route to the north of the reef. However, Jamil did not expect to stumble upon the treasures he found within the hull of one of the shipwrecks; an untainted armour of the highest quality! Enamored with this finding, as well as several others, Jamil filled his raft and pockets with as much treasure as he could find, before floating towards the route he hoped a decent vessel would pass.

Jamil's luck did not betray him, indeed he was picked up by a merchant vessel returning to Redmouth. Unfortunately, the captain demanded a toll for his ferrying. Jamil was to surrender all the treasure he could not hide. Including the armour.

However, the armour would not stay within the captain's cabins. Although empty, at night it would crawl out in search of Jamil. Like a man at the brink of death reaching for water, the armour kept returning to him. The captain and his crew thought it to be cursed and Jamil seized the opportunity to convince them the armour was a talisman that had protected him and the ship for as long as they carried him. However, according to the clever young man, the captain were to incur it's wrath would he harm Jamil. Spooked as the captain and his crew were about the animated armour, they dared not doubt Jamil's words and safely brought him back to shore.

His family, thought Jamil to be dead, tearfully celebrated his return. Being an honest family, however, they would not allow Jamil to poach the jewelry he'd hidden in his pockets for months. Instead he was to turn them in to the Minicucci family so they could ship them to their honest owners; as well as explain what had happened to their ship and spices. Jamil begrudgingly agreed, but he could not part with the armour and so kept it hidden, even from his own flesh and blood. He knew he could not maintain this guise forever. His family forbid him to ever return to the seas again, so Jamil would bring it to the Belgave Academy instead.

  • Role: Jamil serves the party primarily on the frontline. While Jamil is physically strong in his own right, his magical arsenal is lacking on the offensive. Rather than mowing down everything in sight, Jamil excels at being an absolute pain to deal with and can stall enemies for extended periods of time.

Jamil wears Barbarossa, his magic armour, to fight on the frontline. Jamil's spells become more powerful when Barbarossa is only partly summoned, but due to the nature of his spells, giving up the armour's protection makes this ability very situational.

    • Tidal Surge
Incantation: "Roar oh mighty ocean. Tidal Surge!"
Effect: Summons a powerful blast of water below his feet that launches Jamil in the air. It can be used to travel quickly, but the further the jump, the less precise the landing.
Quick-cast effect: Rather than leaping large distances, the summoned water pushes Jamil forward so he may move faster and conserve stamina.

      Frost Coat
Incantation: "Bind my foes. Frost Coat!"
Effect: Reinforces Jamil's weapon with a magical ice-coating that leaves thick layers of frostbite on contact; obstructing movement and freeze-burning the body over time.
Quick-cast effect: A single instance attack with frostbite. Although the individual use costs less mana, it's more efficient to use the incantation-version in prolonged battle.

      Diamond Dust
Incantation: "Northern breath, come forth. Diamond Dust!"
Effect: Exhales a cold mist that slows the movement of enemies caught in it, or even temporarily induces the symptoms of a cold, such as coughing and sneezing. This acts as a pseudo-silence, occasionally interrupting incantations.
Quick-cast effect: Spreads regular mist that affects a smaller area and only obstructs vision.

      Whirlpool
Incantation: "Violent torrents, turn the tide. Whirlpool!"
Effect: Forms a large whirlpool around Jamil, drawing nearby enemies in. Using it in combination with Frost Coat or Diamond Dust causes the whirlpool to freeze and root all opponents caught in it to the ground.
Quick-cast effect: Just makes the ground wet... Which is surprisingly effective in mud or sand, or when combined with a lightning mage. It can also be used in combination with Frost Coat or Diamond Dust, but this simply makes the affected area slippery instead.
    • Barbarossa is an armour inhabited by the ghost of a former knight. Barbarossa himself cannot cast magic because he does not have a manapool of his own. He can however, move without Jamil wearing him, as long as the mana for his physical manifestation is supplied.

Manifesting Barbarossa as a physical armour requires mana on Jamil's part. Barbarossa his soul is cursed and he cannot maintain presence in the realm of the living without the Jamil supplying him with the means to do so. Jamil can choose to spend less mana and only summon Barbarossa as a gauntlet, for example. As long as a part of the armour remains in the physical realm, so does Barbarossa.

Should Jamil run out of mana, Barbarossa can maintain his existence by falling into slumber. It will take at least a day before the spirit can think and reason on a human level again.
  • Talents:
    • Do or die. If there's one thing a life at sea teaches you, it's this. Jamil is no quitter, but a hard worker.
    • Monkey-fish. Again, any sailor worth his salt. Jamil is as good a climber as a swimmer.
    • Just a cold. While hardly immune, Jamil doesn't let any little old ailment get him down. He's sorry for sneezing in your face, though.
    • A crow's eye. Jamil is great at appraisals. If you want to know what something is worth, ask Jamil.
    • Born entertainer. Jamil likes to make people smile and the cheeky monkey does his best to make that happen.
    Flaws:
    • Superstitious. Sailor stereotype, thine name is.
    • Eager to please. Because Jamil spent so much time off shore, it's been hard for him to form meaningful relationships. He can easily lose sight of what's important in pursuit of one.
    • Finders keepers. He can't help it, it's just so shiny. Jamil has difficulty parting with fancy trinkets, even if they're not technically his own.
    • Why can't we all be friends? Jamil handles conflict rather poorly and can get very emotional. Even if he is not directly involved himself.
    • The Sunk Cost Fallacy. Jamil can really commit himself to a project, especially if he puts a lot of work in it. For the better or worse.

Sorry, I must have missed this one. Everything looks good except for the silence effect on Diamond Dust.

But are you sure you want to tie your character to one that's no longer in play?

It doesn't affect quick-casts, only incantations. So it's a very soft form of CC. Like, people sometimes have to cough or sneeze that might interrupt an incantation, so they have to start over.

I can change this, I just wanted to ask if that was clear.

But are you sure you want to tie your character to one that's no longer in play?
I can change around some names if you'd prefer, but it shouldn't really affect play.

I just don't know that I'm too keen on having it done by giving people colds.

As far as the backstory, I'll leave that up to you, I just thought I'd bring that up.

The way I understand it, it's more like inducing a sneeze or giving chills, rather than an actual disease; just symptoms associated with a cold that can interrupt speech, and therefore an incantation.

Hmm. On second thought. It's best if I do change the names just in case I want to use it later for a mission or something.

As for the spell, I understand how I worded it doesn't communicate as I intended. Rest assured it's more like sakuyahime described than causing a week of bedrest :p I'll make appropriate edits tomorrow when I'm behind a PC and also not drunk.

Alright, that's fine, then.
