Slice of Life is my favorites, but I also love fandom based* and country based rps. I'm open to trying most things, but there are a couple that I won't do.

*I'm not interested in fandoms I don't know and I am not interested in playing canon characters. I only play OCs.

Very few people have ever heard of the Hawaiian island of Maka'ala … which is exactly how the people like it.... or, at the very least it's all they have ever known. Those who have heard of it, and that have managed to enter, usually stay [of their own will] as it is a highly functional and very peaceful place. Maka'ala does not turn anyone away, but it also does not welcome those who wish to change it.

For anyone who has ever heard the expression; it takes a village, well … this place could be the best definition for it. Life here isn't really different from anywhere else … except for the fact that there is an enormous fence.. No, it's more like a wall really, that surrounds the entire Island... sort of. It surrounds the entire island, yes, however, it is not technically on the ground of the island. The wall-fence is located four-hundred and eighty-two feet from the shore [in the same shape as the island], and using the most innovative technology possible, it was ensured that it was rooted down well beneath the under-lying sand-bed of the sea floor.

This structure which keeps insiders in and outsiders out [which will be described later in more detail] has only one entra-exit. This place is completely off limits to anyone except the fifteen council members and the two groups of fishermen. It is heavily guarded and the punishments for breaking this rule are extreme.

Sooo … since you probably have no idea where this is going, it's just a family-rp :) ... I just wanted to pick a more unusual setting... and I kiiinnnnddddaaaa had Moana stuck in my head, so that is where the Hawaiian setting and the no one leaves the island thing comes from [plus it makes it a tad more interesting... no?]

Anywho, it is a modern-day family rp, soooo nothing out of the ordinary here ^_^

@Felilla and I can gladly answer any questions you have, but please make sure you have read everything in this thread as well. Please don't post forms here, this is just for chatting and planning things out :).
  • Maka'ala is a very close-knit and protective community of the modern day. In fact, it's name translates to vigilance … something that the first Chieftan, a Chieftess by the name of Hele'i Anakawan, took very seriously. She founded this village over four-hundred and eighty-four years ago with an unknown number of people who trusted her with all they had.

Today, July 3rd, 2017, The Chief, the first male chief to ever lead the people of Maka'ala is [Felilla's Character]. He is the eldest child of the previous Chieftess who was the eldest child of the previous Chieftess, and so forth. Each Chief steps down, turning the role over to their eldest child when the child reaches the age of twenty-four, it has been that way since the start. In theory, the eldest child could turn the title over to the next oldest sibling once they have received the title if they really do not want it, but it has never happened. Also, if the current Chieftan were to join the departed before their eldest child's twenty-fourth birthday the Chieftan's spouse would rule until that time [that has happened]. Each Chief is expected to have more than one child [so yes, they are also expected to have one] … if they fail to have a biological child [or at least fail to have a biological child that survives] they can give it to a niece, nephew or adopted child... assuming they are at least twenty-four.. Again, this is something that has never happened.

Family in Maka'ala is a major focal point. Most families are very large [there are very, very few small families]. The typical family usually consists of 2 parents, five to nine children and three to five animals. Of course there are families who don't fit this... some maybe have three kids, or 12 kids or no animals or an entire farm, there is no 'right way' to live here … as long as you follow the laws.

Your average, everyday vehicles are not allowed here. This is partially because there are no roads, it's all natural. With the exception of the three-hundred cobblestones used for the compass, all the land is sand, grass, dirt and rock. The island is very small and most people find it no problem to walk or ride on horseback [or donkeyback] everywhere, but there are a decent number of 'certified vehicles' that are owned. All-terrain four wheelers and custom made all-terrain vehicles [basically they look like Jeeps and pickups] are solid choices for those who don't want to walk or ride horseback. Bikes, scooters, skateboards and the like are not used [most people don't know what they are] simply for the fact that the ground wouldn't really allow very much travel with those things. Wheelchairs are also custom made to avoid troublesome travel. They are built with working motors.

The ever so intimidating fence-wall, professionally known as the Grand Hoomalu … or more casually as the barricade … or some other oh-so-endearing term, guards and separates the island from the world. As was mentioned previously, the walls are rooted very far underneath the seabed. There are pilars that go almost two hundred feet down and the entire circumfrence sits almost 100 feet below, drilled into the solid rock at the bottom. The wall itself is clear and strong … beyond strong... impenetrably strong. The solid, slippery clearness resides only to about ten and a half feet off the ground, not even as tall as some of the trees, after that it turns into a very strong and durable lattice structure, allowing the people below to feel breezes and rain, splashes of sea water, smell everything [snow would fall through as well except it is too warm to snow. The entire year it ranges between about 58 degrees and 94 degrees Fahrenheit]. The still strong and sturdy latticing continues for about forty-nine and a half feet, lending itself to exactly fifty feet of barricade. No one has ever really wanted or attempted to escape. There hasn't been a need to. Everything they have works very well and there are none of the typical problems of the real world.

The council, officially known as Kuka o na Ahakanaka or Council of the People ... though most commonly referred to as just the council are the people who help to advise the chief and bring to attention any details that may be being missed by just the Chieftan's eyes. The head spot is always filled by the Chieftan, followed by the Chieftan's Spouse, the third spot is held [or reserved for] the eldest child of the Chieftan. The other twelve spots are chosen by the Chieftan. Anyone who is eleven or older is considered, whether or not they know it. Being a council member is not something that a person can chose to be a part of, but something that is given to you. It is of the highest honor.

In addition to keeping order, the council are some of the only people allowed to go beyond the barricade [apart from fishermen who leave in a group... there are two groups of about twelve people each, they rotate weekly, each leaving for 36 hours then returning until their group is sent out again]. The members of the coucil journey to the big Island [Hawaii] once a month to exchange trade and collect payments which are then brought back and returned to the people who have sent their goods out past the gates. The council's journey only takes about two hours each way, and only seven members need to go each time [though all fifteen may go]. The entire event only lasts ten hours at most.

A person may step-down from the council at any time. However, they will never be allowed to return to the council either. It also works in such that if the Chieftan thinks you are not a proper fit they can resign you... however, you may be chosen again by a new Chieftan at some point.

    map - aerial.jpg

The Island itself is quite small. It is about 7.5 miles from its east-end to its west-end and 11.8 miles from its north-end to south-end. It does not have a very distinct shape, but it is somewhere between a rectangle and an oval with rough edges [if you were to look from an aerial view].

The majority of the island is covered in greenery and fine sand. There are some areas that are much rockier than others, but everywhere on the island is technically liveable.

The only portion of Maka'ala that is not bordered by sand is the south and southeast. Rocky cliffs overlook the edge of the island, a truly breathtaking sight. Most people don't live in the south-most southern area as it is majorly cliffs and that can spell disaster for the homes if they are too close to the edge. There are people who live between the middle of the island and the middle of the south though.

The North is mainly forests [only the thin, beachy strip bordering it from the water], and is protected under order of the chief. So, even though it is a place one can live, no one is allowed to take up a permanent residence there. Only camping is allowed.

The middle of the island, ranging from the east border to the west border is where most of the population spends their days and nights. The very center of the island is marked by a cobblestone compass of mainly red, grey and brown stones [with a few other varying colors here and there] built into the sandy but very firm ground. Nearly all of the shops and other places of entertainment and necessity [hospital, theaters, police/fire station, vet clinic, school, etc] are in the very center of the island while the homes are spread, between places, further out towards the beach, and even over the privately-owned businesses.

The water surrounding the island changes with the weather. Most of the time it is clear and pleasant, but with rain it becomes grey and foggy looking, presenting an eerie site. The stronger the incoming storm the darker and more opaque the water gets. Most people would also assume that the four-hundred feet of water between the island and fence-wall would be stagnant, but it is not. In the lowest twelve or so feet of the wall, all completely submerged, there are a series of slits no more than three inches wide and seven inches long placed specifically so that none are too close to or next to one another. It helps to keep the water filtered. When the gate is opened twice-daily as well, the ramps allow some water to flow in and out. Mainly though it is done through the use of those flow holes.

  • There are many places for such a small community. **These are NOT all the places, just a few … but do keep in mind you won't find any shops like McDonald's or Forever 21 here [you may find 'brand name' items in Hohonu Wai in the import section... but you won't find the actual stores].**

Kellers is left to Wela and Hohonu Wai is to the right. Nalu General is to the right of Kellers. They are located more east. Kupuna and Anuenue are more west, and stand next to one another. Hai'ii Manor, St. Andrew Memorial Hospital and the Maka'ala Station are the three buildings in the center, they border the cobblestone compass, forming a triangle of sorts with nothing but sand and palm trees between them [well and the compass of course].

Kellers is a family run super-store. The family that runs it lives above the store. You can find everything from food to clothing to sports gear, even a café and a section for local vendors who want a place to sell their things. They open at 9am and close at 7pm.

Wela is a popular restaurant. It is fancier, but still affordable [everything is affordable]. It serves local cuisine with home caught and grown food. There is no menu for it as it is always changing. For every meal there are 3 to 5 options. The place opens at 10am and closes at 10pm.

Hohonu Wai is the most popular style spot on the island. It heavily caters to the locals as well and has half the store for imports, but also half to sell for locals if they want their merchandise their. They open at 9am and close at 9pm.

Nalu General is the school building. Even though the community is bustling and growing, it is still plenty small for a one-building school. Obviously it has gone over some expansions through the years, but that is it. The school teaches everyone from kindergarten up to twelfth grade. Each grade has one room in the schoolhouse. Besides the fourteen classrooms [an extra room for during-class detentions], there is a large gymnasium, a cafeteria, a library and 6 bathrooms [3 for each gender] of 12 stalls each. Unlike most schools were all students in middle school and up switch rooms for different classes, all students stay in the same classroom all day … except for lunch and gym. There is also only 1 teacher for each grade. School begins at 8am for all students and ends at 230pm, extracurriculars continue until 430/5pm. **There is no college. All citizens of Maka'ala apprentice in their desired paths [so long as someone agrees to apprentice them]. They can begin apprenticing at the age of sixteen, but are still required to finish schooling.**

Kupuna is the local theater. It has two cinema screens/theater rooms on one side of the building and a stage for local productions on the other side of the building. One movie room is dedicated to local films. The second movie room is dedicated to movies from outside the barrier... a new one is shone weekly. There are six live shows a year in the theater room, a new show performs every two months, usually with five to nine performances each week. The staged theater is open everyday between noon and 8pm. The movie theaters are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7am until midnight.

Anuenue is the local veterinary clinic and animal rescue. It is also the feed and supply shop for all animal goods. Anuenue is open from 9am until 7pm Monday thru Saturday and 11am to 2pm on Sunday. There is always an on-call veterinarian for emergencies though.

Hai'ii Manor is the Chiefs home. Himself, the Chieftess and their children live their. The Chief and Chieftess are also responsible for the few children without families. It is rare that children are orphaned, but it does happen from time to time. It is one of the oldest and most respected buildings. Council meetings are held here as well since both the Chief, Chieftess and eldest child of the Chief are members of the council.

St. Andrew Memorial Hospital is the local place for caregiving. It is your emergency destination, but also your general and everyday type of doctors office. The pharmacy is also located here.

Maka'ala Station is the joint police station and firehouse. Like the rest of the island, they do not have your typical cop/firemen vehicles. The firehouse uses all-terrain trucks with custom beds to hold whatever they need. The cops use a variation of all-terrain four wheelers, horses and all-terrain custom trucks.
  • 1. If you have a question, Ask!!! I promise I don't bite <3

    2. No Godmodding [or powerplaying ... though that shouldn't be an issue here]. Every character has their flaws. As a side note ;; Please build relationships of all kinds, not just romance! It makes the characters more believable.

    3. Please use proper spelling, grammar, and try to put some content into your posts. I shouldn't see any one-liners. Indulge in detail! (in other words, please try to write at least a small paragraph per character)

    4. Please use fade-to-blacks and timeskips as necessary. We don't need to know the details on your characters overly intimate moments, mentioning and acknowledging something is fine, but stay away from explicits.

    5. You cannot be your own love interest... sorry.

    6. There is no character limit, just keep them all active. Please put your character's favorite color somewhere in the form.

    7. Your characters need to be accepted before you can RP.

    8. Have Fun! If you don't have fun then there's no point to RP!

As a side note, please try to have your characters join per-existing families. If too many people make families but don't join others we will need to close new-family applications until other spots are filled.

@Prof. Mathematics I don't think there's any open families, so yeah, you should probably make your own family if you want to have an adult {aka parent} character.

And welcome to the site. ^.^

Hey, I don't know if I'm doing this right, but... A single mom... And her daughters... I dunno if this is okay? I kinda wanna play the mom and the youngest daughter... I wouldn't mind playing them all... Let me know if I messed up.

Sort of. You would only name and choose the members you are playing. You would just post somewhere in the form for what kind of additional family members are open ... make sense?

Also, welcome!
