Science Fiction, anyone?

Yeah, this is starting to get interesting , and welcome aboard all newcomers! I'm working on my alien race at the moment, and I feel I've seen some top-notch contenders here already. Just wanted to let you know I'll be posting something soon on the race I have in mind, and to say Hello.

I was actually going to suggest something similar to scouting or surveying an uncharted system. The conspiracy bit might really add some fun to things. c:

I really like the conspiracy idea as well, it could lead to some interesting plot developments. It is also possible that we could perhaps have multiple smaller teams of sort, made up of only a handful of crew members. They would all be a part of the larger group that was employed by this controlling party. One of the smaller teams could be primarily in charge of exploration, while others might look for resources, etc. Different races' skills would come in handy for that surely. It could also leave it a bit more open ended, giving us a bit more freedom as far as what we'd like the characters to do.

The seperate group idea might be fun but I think it should be done on a smaller scale. Everyone is part of a large team on the same ship but have different roles. For instance a scouting party, a exploration party with at least some combat trained personnel, a technological savvy team, and a crew to man the ship. Most likely due to funding people would fit into multiple roles so you can rp with more than just your one group. I wouldnt mind being a pilot and a scout as an example.

This was pretty much what I was stating, although I may have not made it super clear. I pretty much assumed the entire group would be no more than maybe about 20 members. (Although I don't believe we have that entirely figured out, so I could be completely off with that blind estimate.)

As far as having multiple roles, I never entirely meant to word it as if each team/character wouldn't be able to shift duties or take on multiple. If the entire team is not be very large, it would certainly be necessary.

Something to keep in mind would be that we have a grand total of six interested players. Given, there will be some NPCs, but I don't know how many characters people are willing to (or should) write for.

I prefer writing for one but thats just me. I guess the main problem now is just figuring out what could a bunch of explorers discover that would allow us to continue to explore and map planets while simultaneously being on the run. My vote is alien ruins that holds advanced technology thats scattered among the unkown planets/systems.

I feel like once the crew started running, mapping planets would take a bit of a back seat. Lol.

Some of this could change a bit depending on our characters or the races we include (since a few of those are still in the works), so it might be a good idea to keep that in mind. I do agree with Dino though. It would be somewhat difficult to be running and still have time to explore and map planets thoroughly.

Its just a shame to lose that exploration element. A cause that makes us at least have to investigate certain planets would keep it alive.

@GroggyFrog
I get what you're saying, exploration is an interesting concept in space-centered and sci-fi-based role-plays, bu it's best to hold out for that idea until we get some of the races and roles plotted out more, as well as the plot. Don't give up on it just yet, it may play a key role when we get our stuff sorted out on this end.

I believe many of us like the exploration aspect and wouldn't want to drop it completely (myself included). At the moment, the races and roles do seem a bit more important to have sorted out, however.

A surveyor team on the run doesn't mean they have to just RUN. Whatever they're running from- could require them to continue exploring the rest of the system to find something, or solve a problem or mystery of some sort...? :)

We have about 2-3 races right now we should probably start thinking of making a list of all of them.

As far as roles go scouting would be a important job. Finding stable and safe routes of travel for the larger exploration team as well as making sure nothing in the immediate area is dangerous or hostile. Probably would be a two man job anymore would draw too much attention and having one scout seems dangerous.

Survey corps could consist of lots and lots of people. Especially if it's for previously unexplored space. We could be with a big operation employing hundreds from a sort of carrier ship. And the PC'S could be a whole team.

Maybe a freighter that takes a crew of 8-10 folks. Captain, engineers, scientists, medical, security, that sorta thing. The vessel may have a ground vehicle on board, as well as maybe a light personal craft or two.

Recon teams could consist of almost anything.... but... Environmental sciences would be important. Communication specialists absolutely. Physicists. Biologists. Physician. Engineers to take care of landing craft. You could say 'security', but they could all have military training depending on what kind of team they are.

But yeah generally trying to avoid a 'ragtag' \ "Firefly" feel to it. Maybe more star trekky or aomething...? Hm.

I like the idea of having fewer people aboard the ship less npcs to get in the way. I'm actually getting a ME andromeda feel from this rather than Firefly or star trek. Which is not necessarily a bad thing since I'm pretty sure that is what we were going for.

UPDATE
@DinoFeather @Mágissa Kei @Zaenephayl @GroggyFrog @Hunter of Shadows @Dipper

edited the original post to summarize the bigger thoughts thus far, i believe. That way we have a single concise place to see some of this stuff. If you'd like me to include other bits of info- please tell me!

I'd love to see more race ideas. Doesn't even have to be long or drawn out- maybe just some physical descriptions at this point.

I think that's a pretty good way that we could set up the team.

We don't have much of a clear idea for the plot yet, I guess, so I'm going to throw out some ideas. It seems the scheme idea is still floating around (I take a liking to it personally), and we could probably implement that in a few different ways. If we do go with a more scheme central idea (seems we have sort of established this without really directly stating it though), I think it could go one of two (three?) ways. Either this scheme affects only our particular team, or it could affect the entire operation, maybe a selection of teams, which would be a sort of combination of the two ideas.

With only the one team, it could perhaps create some interesting drama with the other parties. If the one team were to (as an example) vanish and go on the run due to said scheme, the rest might start pursuing them and try to figure out what's going on. The scheme could also have been concocted by the other parties and/or the rest of the operation as well.

The entire operation being effected might end up pretty interesting as well though. The teams might start running from each other, or even hunting each other down depending on the situation, they could even band together. I'm trying to be rather general here though, since the actual scheme itself is undecided.

Oh my gosh, this looks really cool and really fun. Would definitely be interested in playing/helping out with this. I do have some thoughts on a race, actually, but I want to read through the rest of the thread and just get my interest out there before just interjecting my thoughts all over the place.
