[ October 1st, Afternoon / Hisakawa Prison Ferry, Female Cells Deck ]
Maybe because she just met her. Maybe it had something to do with her behavior. Either way, Ai continued to go back and fourth between being fearful of Fuka and being dumbfounded by her actions to the point of wondering if anything cohesive was going on in that cranium of hers.
At the moment, her thoughts leaned towards the latter as the back of that same cranium was smacked by the blue haired one of the hero duo. Scolding Fuka for trying the whole thumb scheme she had tried to enact. No one took up the offer unfortunately, putting that effort to waste. Instead, Rinne stressed everyone to not let panic start taking over their cell over who the possible traitor could be.
Kazuko, on the other hand, stressed the lack of details over all. She had an idea as to what a 'betrayal' could entail. Something in regards to those involved with the scene in the mess hall. But, with that being the biggest potential reason, then what would the traitor gain here?
A betrayal could happen in many different ways, from many different angles of understanding.
But the pieces to even get an idea from what was known thus far where sorely missing.
Regardless, despite the skepticism, it seemed like even she was wanting to take some precaution. Suggesting the girls sleep in shifts. Kuu did say that the betrayal was due by midnight in this day. So then, what would happen until then?
If it was anything like yesterday, there would be dinner and finally sleep.
Something could definitely happen during dinner, maybe. But, on the other side, after dinner they would all be corralled into a cell with random people again. So if the traitor was going to act, they would have to do it now. Or, they would try to pull something during dinner.
After dinner was over, and everyone was put into cells again. There would be no way for Kuu's prediction to come true, at least for all of them.
Kuu's fortune told a lot while telling practically nothing to them at the same time. Nanashi's mind was trying to fill the blanks, but all of it was complete speculation on pretty much every aspect of the people around her. They were all just random girls, some of whom, happened to be witness to Ai getting bullied.
There was an outside element missing to the entire puzzle. Without it, they were all no better than anyone else on the ship with an anxiety of being stabbed while asleep.
Ultimately, Nanashi let her thoughts take a rest. Just in time to hear Ai getting scolded(?) for jumping right on Fuka being a suspect of betrayal.
"...sorry."
Ai apologized. Though it seemed like it was more towards the others as opposed to Fuka herself.
Ultimately, speculation wouldn't get them anywhere.
It would be another few hours until dinnertime, if things went like the did yesterday. That gave the students time to get out and eat, and for the chamber-pots to be changed out for the poor ship crew who was responsible for that. Nanashi ultimately decided that the most likely spot where something like a betrayal could happen would be during dinner.
Still, she wanted to sleep off the next few hours. Sitting in a cell was going to get very boring.
The girls could hear some echoes of a struggle going on down in the boy's deck. But that ultimately died down as well.
About ten minutes passed. With no one saying anything to each other.
Fifteen.
Eighteen.
Twenty.
No one could even tell what time it was inside. It was incredibly boring.
Ai was visibly starting to nod off.
Thought none of the girls could really count it, about seeven hours would pass with them sitting in that cell.
In such a situation, even as uncomfortable as it was, falling asleep was about as inevitable as Kuu's so-called fortune.
Ai sat herself by Nanashi, feeling the most comfortable by her.
"Hey Nanashi? Want to use each other to lean up against?"
In any other context, it was a dumb question.
But inside this cell room, another person was probably the most comfortable thing available. Nanashi simply nodded to agree.
"Thanks..."
It was a one sided deal though.
Ai was so light looking that Nanashi felt that she would just topple her over if she tried to lean back at her.
"Hey..."
....
...
..
.
"My dream... is to be a hero! This is a picture I drew of me as a hero, after I beat up the thing that makes my brother sick!"
"Yuuji is... It would've just been better if Yuuji hadn't been born."
"Forta, please hand Mother her wine..."
"Mom, I had to get a ride from a classmate. Where were you? Mom...?"
"Right Forta, while I'm talking to the man at the register, I want you to grab the bottle and sneak out while I keep him occupied."
"Yes. Dear. Once I give the signal jump out from the trash and stab them! Cut their throat so they can't yell for help!"
"Useless child! Don't you understand that if you can't do it right we won't be able to eat!? Moreover, because you were so useless...!"
"Hi Forta. I'm Me Name is Wilson. May I please talk to your Mother?"
"Go ahead! Take that brat with you and Fuck off!"
"Hi everyone. Meet our new friend! Come on, tell us about yourself. What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"Well, when I grow up, want to be..."
"O...ow! Cmon'! You're such a jerk Paul!"
"So you're the new girl? You said you want to be a hero right? Can you be a hero against THIS!?"
"Oh my... how could a little girl do this to a boy twice her size?"
"It's like he was attacked by some kind of monster.... Just horrible."
No one should've known about that.
After Nanashi ran from the orphanage, there should've not been anyone who knew about that.
Hearing that being uttered to her so knowingly by Kuu convinced Nanashi in what the Fortune Teller had said. The inevitable probability that someone was going to be betrayed. But instead of worrying about who would do it. She realized that how bad the betrayal would be was something more important to consider.
If the result of a 'betrayl' could be decided on her own terms. Then doing it might be enough to prevent the fated betrayal from happening. The person might get discouraged from carrying out whatever they had planned originally. But, would that be playing right into that Kuu's fortune?
Of course it would. But that didn't matter.
The outcome of a betrayl wouldn't change even if they didn't hear the fortune, Nanashi had already accepted what Kuuyari was capable of.
If the option to modify fate was there, as Kuu had said, then this was the one answer she could think of. She'd happily try it, repercussions be damned.Just like Kuni had said - she wasn't going to just stand by and do nothing.
"Hi Forta! How're ya doing?"
"So I heard you got into a bit of trouble, the other day."
"Would you like to talk about it, sweetie?"
"Could you please tell me why you did that to Paul?"
The girls got a rude awakening, as the guards yelled and clanged their batons against the cell walls. The clanging wasn't particularly necessary either really. It just hurt people's ears.
Dinnertime was fast approaching.
Standing up form her spot in the corner of the cell and holding her head. Nanashi got a really bad awakening when the guard started clanging the bars right be her head.
The girls heard the exact same speech as what the boys did.
There wasn't going to be any dinner tonight.
They were all going to leave all of their rooms and report to the deck where the lifeboats were located. And make the rest of the trip to the island on those boats. At the lite up beach they would be helped onto shore by other students and staff.
Once they were at the island... they would give their prisoner number slips to the attendant in order to retrieve what little belongings they had at the admittance warehouse. Unlike them, their belongings were transported ahead of time. Instinctively, the inmates checked to make sure they had their number on them.
Everyone was collectively amazed at the strange and the unnecessarily complex nature of this entire exercise.
"...If they were able to get our stuff to the island, then why do we have to take boats to get there ourselves?" Ai wondered aloud, after inspecting her prisoner number slip and slipping it back into her pocket.
The entire time on this ship, there seemed to be this overrunning sort of theme in regards to how the guards were treating them. Despite what happened at the cafeteria, only the prisoners stepped in to help. Even though there were sounds of fighting in some cells, no one came forward.
Prisoners were more or less being left to their own devices. So long as they continued to be kept in a controlled environment. Otherwise, if they were killed or died, it wasn't their problem.
"Well, considering how long we've been out at sea. I can guess that trying to use the lifeboats to try escaping simply won't end particularly well. They've kept us in these cells and behind barbed wire this entire time. They wouldn't suddenly give us boats unless getting to the island was as controlled as our time has been on this boat."
"What do you mean exactly, Nanashi?"
"...Even with a boat, we've got no choice but to go to Hisakawa. Otherwise, we'll just end up adrift at sea, with no idea where we are."
Nanashi had a point. Given how long they had been traveling, it was entirely unlikely that they'd be able to travel the same distance and live.
"Then, what about getting picked up by another boat passing by? That could happen."
"Do you really want to go for that chance?"
Ai, after thinking a moment, shook her head.
The doors to each cell were opened as a pair of officers with a set of keys went by. They directed them to go down the hall and take a couple of turns to get out to the lifeboat deck. On the port side of the ship.
Later...
[ October 1st, Late Evening / Hisakawa Prison Ferry, Port Lifeboat Deck ]
It was dark. The moon was able to cast enough light to dimly illuminate everything. But even then, facing out to the water, the lights of the beach that the students were to travel to were shining the brightest. Apparently, they were about a two kilometers away from where the prison ship was now anchored.
But the chill of the evening air. It was so cold. The students clad in regular uniforms shuddered at the thought of falling into the water.
The lifeboats, according to what was being passed along, was able to safely carry about 8 people each. Based on the number of students present, finding room wasn't too much of a problem. Students were again, left to their own devices to figure out what boat to get onto. Crewmen manning the lifeboat davits told everyone to stand in groups of eight before casting the lifeboats into the water.
Naturally, the girls and boys grouped to their respective genders. But there wasn't any official rule mandating gender segregation.
Unfortunately, for the people who had gotten acquainted in the cells of ten, decisions would have to be made on who would have to find another boat to squeeze onto.
"Eight people, that means, two of us have to go somewhere else. Well... I guess I'll go ahead and volunteer myself to go find another boat. Maybe if I'm lucky those boys we met earlier might have a spare spot."
"Are you sure Nanashi?"
"Yeah. I can take care of myself."
"Alright... let me go with you then!"
"You've been nice to me up through all of today. So let me return the favor at least. I can keep you from being all on your own again until we get to the island."
It was a pretty weak excuse.
Nanashi and some of the others were aware that Ai had her reservations about some of the girls. Once could tell just by how she was acting earlier. In truth, Ai was fine with most of them actually, but it seemed like she leaned towards Nanashi the most.
With Nanashi and Ai out, room aboard one boat was no longer an issue. They could probably find a place to squeeze themselves into.
There was absolutely no problems...
