@Takumi I'M GLAD SOMEONE LIKES MY SONIC SHITPOSTS.

Lol, they amuse me. X3

@Takumi I realized something that Pokemon and Sonic do actually have in common:

"Wait wtf this is literally a casino. You can literally gamble on a fucking slot machine. What. Why is this here. I thought this was a kids' game. What the-"

Also, I like that you brought this up. I never even questioned this when I played heartgold. If I'm remembering correctly, there was a casino or something related in it.

I'm pretty sure that Heart Gold (and Soul Silver) only hat Voltorb Flip; the true Game Corners were cut out due to age rating reasons.

I was mainly referring to the Game Corner that was in the original games (as well as the Kanto remakes). :P Some other games have also had locations that were clearly intended to mimic the original Game Corner, but uh, yeah, being present in Gen I really solidifies the Game Corner as part of the series canon, as opposed to being some obscure little thing from one title.

AT THE VERY LEAST, said original games do imply that the Game Corner isn't a place that kids should normally be (even though no one seems to stop a 10-year-old from walking in...) by calling it a "playground for grownups", and they paint it as a kind of shifty place by making it so that it's controlled by Team Rocket. So, it would be hard to claim that the game is making casinos look like a good thing, or a place for kids to be.

Here's the thing, though,

The thing about the Game Corner is that, in-universe, the whole point behind gambling there is to win coins that can be spent on rare Pokemon and items. And, yeah, winning enough coins to get anything good is hard -- and there's this whole thing about how a bunch of NPC's that you can talk to in that same town are all like "buying and selling Pokemon is wrong!", "making Pokemon into prizes at the Game Corner is wrong!", etc. So, if you're just a casual player (or, you know, a kid), then your attempts at winning Pokemon probably won't get you very far -- and, talking to NPC's around the town and realizing that the entire thing is just a money-making scheme for Team Rocket (and that the rare Pokemon were probably stolen, anyway) would normally discourage the player from trying to gamble more to win cool Pokemon.

HOWEVER,

One of the Pokemon that you can win at the Game Corner -- more specifically, the hardest Pokemon to obtain there, and the one that is worth the most coins -- is Porygon. Barring glitches, Porygon cannot be obtained anywhere else in the game. If you want to catch 'em all, you have to gamble. You have to play into this seedy, Rocket-based casino and spend a shitton of your hard-earned cash there. Your only other option (again, not counting glitches) is to trade with someone, but even that implies that the person you were trading with had to have gambled in order to obtain that Porygon. It just can't be found anywhere else. @_@ And that... sort of undoes all of the earlier points.

MEANWHILE, IN SONIC 2, you have an entire zone that's just casino-themed. And while this feels like an odd design choice for a kids' game, it's hard to get anything reminiscent of actual gambling out of a level in a 2D platformer, right? Weeeeell throughout the zone there are these pinball flipper thingies (actually, the whole zone has a very pinball-ish aesthetic in addition to the whole casino thing...), and some of those pinball flippers have slot machines near them (as part of the background). And if you use the pinball flipper to launch Sonic into just the right spot, it'll activate the slot machine, which, depending on how well you do, will award you with varying amounts of rings. :P And it's not like this is a one-time use thing, either. You can keep launching Sonic into there over and over -- and it isn't a very difficult maneuver, either -- and retry as many times as you want. The only real sense of risk comes from the fact that if you get three Eggmans in a row, Sonic will be bombarded with spikey balls and lose all his rings. o_o" However, you can't actually lose a life from this happening. It can only take away your rings. Even if you have no rings when it happens to you, you still won't die. This means that it isn't really a huge punishment, except for serving as a setback if you were trying to work your way up to 100 rings to get an extra life.

And, I'll admit, there have been instances where I spent quite a bit of time just throwing myself into the slot machine over and over because, yeah, I wanted an extra life. o_o" I guess the only big sense of risk comes from the fact that the levels in the game have a time limit, so if you spend too much time at the slot machine, you might not leave yourself enough time to finish the stage.

But yeah, unlike Pokemon's game corner, the casino zone is just painted as being a place of fun and games where you can play pinball and slot machines and earn rings. Which, again... feels a bit weird for a kids' game. XD But then, the big thing about Sonic was that it was always supposed to be slightly cooler and edgier than Nintendo, so, I guess it makes sense that they wouldn't bother to be so squeaky-clean, and instead send a message more along the lines of, "Heck yeah it's a casino. The night is yours, kid. Your parents ain't home. Gamble and win rings."

Also: I know I should be posting for Trigun. Sorry for the wait -- I've had a lot on my plate lately. o_o" Not only that, but Aqua and I still have to work out how exactly this whole Submachine loop thing is going to work... if we go through with it at all.

And, in general, there's really not much I can do with Trigun until we can work out where exactly this group is going from here. o_o

Hmmm... this box is being weird ...and now it's not.

The typing box... it isn't letting me post Youtube... I think.

It isn't that. It is actually just not letting me post on the good advertisements page in general chatting... I think we broke it.
