Epitaph

A futuristic science fantasy dystopian / post-apocalyptic war RP conceived by myself and @DBZ7.

apocalypse2.jpg

Synopsis

The year is 2307, and in this Earth, a mysterious cataclysm known as the "Millennial Renewal" that supposedly occurred around 400 years ago brought about devastation, significantly reducing the human population and forcing them to live in fear and servility to the cause of the event, a demon named Zagan, as well as the race of demons that had mysteriously appeared after the cataclysm. Though only a select few are aware of the finer details of the event, people are at least aware of the general gist; whatever Zagan did back then, it was powerful enough to bring darkness to humans all over the world.

Though humanity has attempted to fight back many a time throughout the years, one thing was lost over time. The one thing that was more valuable than their own life; their will. And so, Zagan, who continues to rule to this day, ruled over the world with an iron fist without any worry of effective rebellion.

Or so he believed.

From the shadows rises another rebellion. An organization known as the Liberators, comprised of both humans and sympathetic demons who wish to co-exist peacefully rather than rule over the humans, has begun to come to power slowly but steadily, and stands as the final line of humanity's hope.

Armed with only the bare minimal supplies, carrying the last remaining willpower of humanity on the shoulders, a war will be raged between the Liberators and Zagan's forces.

And nothing would ever be the same again.

With the discovery of a new power that can be harnessed by the Liberators looming over, perhaps the will of humanity hasn't been eradicated just yet.

Rules

1. Naturally, all of Iwaku's rules apply here as well.

2. No OOC drama, please. If you cause a lot of unnecessary trouble, I'll have to boot you from the RP, and worse yet, @DBZ7 will publicly roast you for everyone's amusement on top of that. You don't want him to do that, do ya?

3. The GMs' words are law. That being said, between you and me, DBZ7 is more on the crazy side, so don't trust him as much as you should trust me.

4. Don't be afraid to ask questions and add in your own ideas to the story / lore! That being said, don't get too carried away either, so ah, yeah, refer to the first part of this rule.

5. You may only sign up as up to two characters, though they may be on different affiliations / don't have to be connected to each other.

6. I would hope this goes without saying, but no godmodding or Mary Sues allowed. Don't know what a Mary Sue is? You know Kirito from Sword Art Online? Don't be Kirito.

7. Unless you absolutely can't help it, please don't do one-liners. I'm personally lenient as far as posting expectations go, but ah, just don't spend all of the RP shitposting.
That all being said, if I think of any more, I'll be sure to add 'em in, so for now, just heed these ones! And any common sense rules that your gut says you should follow!

Info

Generally, the RP will be based primarily in either the Liberators Base, which consist mostly of reinforced underground caverns, or the cities under Zagan's rule, including his fortress. Though some background info has been provided already, exploring the world will enable you to learn more about the little established lore if you so desire.

By default, your character will generally be a private or a recruit, for a lack of better title, in either affiliation that you choose, though if you really wanna, you can request to have your character have a higher rank such as lieutenant, captain, etc., though you'll have to really convince me and the co-GM.

We'll allow some free reign with technology and leave it mostly to your imagination, notably with if you decide to do a cyborg character, though there are some limitations; due to the fact that the Liberators have very limited resources at this point in time, they only have access to "normal" weapons, like standard guns with bullets, compared to Zagan's forces, which have access to laser guns that overheat rather than depend on limited ammo, and how the only blades around are still metal knives, rather than energy blades you might expect from say, Mass Effect.

As for the deal with the demon characters, the following is a set of guidelines concerning their physiology, abilities, and other differences from humans.

  • There are multiple types / race of Demons each with different advantages and disadvantages, as seen below.

Heats: Abilities with fire-based attacks are the strongest of their race. Tendency to shorter tempers and higher strength and defense. Typically the slowest of their race. Depend on hot weather, humidity being an extra bonus, to be comfortable and use their abilities to the fullest.

Blurs: Abilities with lightning-based attacks are the best of their race. Walking definitions of glass cannons with average attack power, these variants can be taken down easily. To compensate, they are easily the fastest of their race and can even outdo the speed of animals like the cheetah with enough training.

Dews: The rarest of all demons, these have the potential to control all types of water: ice, water, and the air. Thriving on colder temperatures, Dews are also more susceptible to the weather than any other variant. Only slightly stronger than Blurs in terms of strength, Dews rely almost solely on their power of water.

Roaches: The most balanced in terms of power, defense, and speed, Roaches stick out due to their tenacity. Their rate of regeneration is better than all races. Their bodies can therefore take the most punishment and are the easiest to morph and shape shift. However, this variant is the most susceptible to poisons and illness, as the body puts more emphasis on the healing rather than its immune system. Rates of infections from wounds are the lowest of all the races, however.

Eyes: The weakest out of all variants in every aspect but intellect, this rare type of Demon possesses memory, creativity, ingenuity, and craftsmanship unrivaled by all except fellow Eyes. However that are the most eccentric, being the most susceptible to inborn or to develop personality or mental disorders. Usually characterized by their spiral pupils.
  • Demons are also capable of regeneration, but are not invulnerable. Healing takes up energy and the more intensive the healing, the more energy is sapped. However, wounds healed are immediately cleaned by the body against infectious bacteria. Listed are some info on their healing factors:

    - Healing wounds such as tears, cuts, bruises, or open wounds take up very little energy, while healing wounds such as broken bones may leave a demon sapped of energy for a half hour.

    - Reattaching limbs take up a bit more, but nothing to worry over.

    - Regrowing limbs take up enough energy to leave a Demon exhausted for an hour

    - Regenerating vital organs like the heart (if not too severely injured), lungs, eyes, or spinal cord is very intensive but possible, but only when the injures are less than severe. Destroyed vitals are impossible to heal or regrow, and like with humans, a damaged brain is practically irreversible. It is also impossible to regrow a detached head.
  • After their rise in the wake of the mysterious cataclysm, the creatures named Demons are beings that possess inborn power succeeding the common human. However, they do have their inherited drawbacks. These include, but are not restricted to:

    - The Demons' innate will to follow no one but the strongest, yet to be the strongest. The paradoxical way of thinking prevents the Demons from coming together as a unified group to start a movement, unless a figure arose with a power so unquestionably superior, no one would question him or her.

    - Smaller population. Death by child birth is far more common in Demon women than humans, and this fear and drawback of reproduction just cuts down on their numbers when compared to humans.

    - They possess a shorter lifespan than humans by roughly twenty years, but in turn, they remain in their physical prime for a longer time than humans.

    - Increased weakness to diseases and poisons is a major contributing factor to Demon death rates.

If you have any questions about any other details I might have neglected to mention, as I'm sure there are a few here and there that I missed, don't be afraid to ask!

Character Sheet

Age: Humans and demons generally age the same, though it should be noted that demons stay in their physical prime for a longer time, but have a generally shorter lifespan.

Appearance: If you choose to just post a picture, you can just post the picture at the top of the CS for convenience, though if you would rather do a written description only, or a description alongside the picture to clarify any details that the picture does not show, do be sure to write it down here. Both realistic and anime-esqe pictures will be accepted.

Species: Is your character a human or demon? We'll also allow a few some-odd cyborgs here and there as well, defined as people with a substantial amount of cybernetic enhancements.

Personality: What is your character generally like? What are some things they like and dislike?

Class: What's your character's special class in the Liberators? Can range from foot soldier to engineer, demolitions, scout, information officer / spy, strategist, medic, and whatever else you'd like to think of. Additionally, if your character is a demon, what is their type?

Enhancements: Does your character have any cybernetic enhancements, like say, a cybernetic arm that provides superhuman strength, an eye that provides better accuracy, or something like that? If so, list 'em here.

Skills / Equipment: What skills (CQC, demolitions, marksmanship, stealth, strategy, etc.) does your character possess?

Weaknesses: What are your characters' shortcomings, whether as a person or soldier?

History: Self-explanatory. How did your character come to be recruited by the Liberators / Zagan? What was their life like before joining? 'Course, if you wanna remain the mysterious type, I suppose you can put something like "will be revealed later" or some jazz like that.

klruaoz.jpg

Name

Mary Harper

Age

24 years old

Appearance

Stands at 5'6, has a decently wide scar running down her back.

Species

Human

Affiliation

Liberators

Personality

On the surface, Mary is a calculated, serious-minded, sometimes reticent, and collected individual. Typically, it's rare to see her crack a smile, but conversely, it is also rather difficult to get a rise out of her. That is not to say she has no emotions, but rather, she has firm control over them, deciding to temporarily discard any emotion that she would deem a distraction from the cause; her ultimate goal of overthrowing the tyrannical Zagan and securing the peaceful co-existence of humans and demons throughout. And though she may be quite young (despite looking older than she is), her determination and passion has impressed those of all ages.

Meticulous and methodical, Mary is a cautious young woman who attempts to think of contingency plans that is ideal to her, thinking of every scenario to compensate for any situation where things might not go as planned. A person who goes through the finer details often to make sure she knows everything she can, she hates failure, though accepts that she cannot win everything, so she at the very least tries to reduce the number of losses as much as possibly can.

However, at heart, despite how jaded she might have become due to her childhood and decision to wage war on Zagan, just like some of those she works with, she is still human. Though she dislikes expressing it, believing that such a display is to display weakness, Mary is a genuinely caring and kind person deep down, free of prejudice and judges a person primarily by the nature of their character.

Class

Leader / Commander

Enhancements

N/A

Skills / Equipment

As far as capabilities go, Mary is nothing to scoff at. Like a sort of jack of all trades, she is skilled in a wide variety of attributes such as hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, strategizing, stealth, demolitions, the works. Though it might not be too hard to surpass her in one field if one were to try hard enough, Mary still has the advantage of her other attributes on-hand. As a result of these skills, Mary is, in general, physically quite fit, perhaps bolstered by the fact that she is in her physical prime.

She is also a fast reader and learner, which is... self-explanatory.

On most given days, Mary usually arms herself with a small sidearm, and carries a locket with a picture of an unidentified man in it. Due to the grainy and worn-out quality of the picture, it is assumed that the picture is older than Mary herself, making the man's identity just a little more mysterious to those who would spot it.

As for during missions, her equipment depends on the type of mission, sometimes carrying a backpack of explosives, a stealth pack, etc., but consistently she usually carries an extra weapon on her, usually either an automatic rifle or shotgun. In her office, on her desk, she also has a picture of herself and the second-in-command of the Liberators, a close friend.

Weaknesses

Due to being something of a jack of all trades, as mentioned above, while she is capable in the fields that she is aware of, others are quite capable of outclassing her if one such field might happen to be their specialty.

She's also a little on the unhealthy side of workaholic, and at times, can come off as a little stuck-up. If you catch her on a good day, she'll be socially awkward in an almost cute way at best.

History

It is known that she is the founder of the Liberators, the latest rebellion to rise up against Zagan, and that she saved the life of the girl who would become her second-in-command, resulting in them forging a close relationship with each other.

However, publicly, not much else is known about her.

Name: Alice 'Li'l Buster'

Age: 22 despite stuck in her 15 year old form.

Appearance:
3f67583038bb43e6426f572ff9f7c9f1e71fe7a7.jpg

Species: Cyborg

Affiliation: Liberators

Personality: Is outwardly very upbeat, optimistic, and joking for the sake of the morale of her soldiers. This changes when by herself or with her small circle of close friends and affiliates.

Class: Vice Commander

Enhancements: All four limbs are robotic, powered by their link to Buster's body. Much of her torso is bio-enhanced, as well as portions of her skull.

Skills / Equipment: Is the lead strategist for the Liberators.
Can use guns and bombs with enhanced accuracy, but her greatest asset are her limbs. Each are capable of morphing into various weapons such as gauntlets, blades, guns, blasters, etc. When using her cybernetic parts, Buster's eyes, hair, and armor shine to a radiant blue aura.

Weaknesses: Incredibly unstable emotionally. Devoted to Mari to the point of fanaticism, willing to go out of her way to take hits, impress, or satisfy her Commander in any way. Her vitality is sapped greatly when using her cybernetic parts. Incredibly strong and fast, although her defenses leave more to be desired.

History: All that is known thus far is that she was found by the Liberators before it was even known by that name, as she, Mari, and 'Doc' were the ones responsible for the foundation of the resistance, with Buster acting as a major supporting pillar for the sake of Mari's ambition. Not much about how long Buster's had her cyborg body is known, unless you are in her tight circle of friends.

Name:
Michael White
[ Prophet ]

Age:
26

Species:
Human

Affiliation:
Liberators

Personality:
Michael doesn't see killing the demons as wrong but rather as a necessary evil in the preservation of man. Because of this he prefers to show his will and his thoughts on the battlefield instead of discussing politics or morals. He isn't mean and is often seen as cold but it's just his nature to be quiet but sarcastic. Michael will bottle up his feelings but when great enough it will clearly be shown, whether kindness or not. He is almost inseparable from his black rifle.

Class:
Sniper

Enhancements:
N/A

Skills / Equipment:
Stealth, Marksmanship, knife combat, incredible mental strength

Weaknesses:
Because of his personality he often goes lone wolf when he should be communicating with the rest of his group. It often causes problems during and after the missions but he hasn't flustered them enough to fail one. They are often frustrated at him because he can bend and break the rules and get away with it because it didn't ruin the mission. It creates tension between him and his comrades. He also took a hit on one Zagan's lords so he has an incredible bounty on his head, but they don't know his face. Zagan and the demons only know him by his nickname, Prophet.

History:
He prefer not to indulge the leader's of the Liberators, simply stating that his past doesn't matter as long as he wants to help. The only clue he gave them was he was wanted for a hit on a demon lord.

Name: Ember V.

Age: 24

Species: Demon

Affiliation: Zagan

Personality: Ember is a hotheaded female demon who loves to watch the world burn. Literally. She's extremely loyal to Zagan, and blindly follows his leadership, believing that he is the epitomy of a superior being. Equipped with a "act now, think later" mindset, the young Heat demon often jumps headfirst into danger without a second thought. She doesn't particularly mind humans, but will kill them without remorse if necessary.

Class: Heat Demon / Squad Leader

Enhancements: N/A

Skills / Equipment: Ember is a highly skilled hand to hand combatant, often engulfing her arms and legs in flame to effectively defeat her opponents. Her control over fire is especially noteworthy considering her age, resulting in her being able to release flame from her hands and mouth, as well as release powerful heatwaves and even alter the temperature of her flames to a degree. The only downside is the that the hotter her flames are, the shorter they last. While Ember's fighting style is both wild and crazy, the heat demon can remain extremely accurate with both her strikes as well as her fire blasts, making her a threat from close range and at a distance.

Weaknesses: Ember is young for a demon, and as such is quite naive when it comes to her undying loyalty to Zagan. She also doesn't think things out all that well either, and will often misjudge a person or situation, a fault that can often result in the death of those beneath her.

History: Ember was recruited by Zagan at a very young age, mainly due to her ancestry. 300 years after Zagan first took over the world, one of his closest followers was a powerful Heat demon that joined him named Arson, an incredibly strong demon and Ember's ancestor. For many years, Arson was a loyal servant of Zagan until his untimely death years later, resulting in Arson's spawn, Brand, taking his place. Years later, Brand would have his own children, Ember, as well as two other demon spawn, Wick and Ignitas. When Brand was defeated in a battle and killed, Ember realized that only one of the three would have a chance of filling their father's spot, and so the three fought each other for the prized position. For three days their battle raged on. In the end, Ember was victorious, but due to her being so young, Zagan denied her the position and sent her to be a foot soldier. Angry and desperate to prove herself, Ember served Zagan at a lowly grunt position for years, obeying his every command, hoping he would eventually realize her power and give her the position she so desperately desired; the seat of her ancestors.

Lately, Ember has moved up through the ranks quite a bit, and holds a small leadership position in Zagan's forces. She is nowhere near the position her elders had, nor anywhere near their immense power. Despite this, her abilities and leadership are highly respectable, and underestimating her is a quick way to get burned.

@QuakeUPSB

It looks good for the most part, but for the backstory, when referring to Brand as Arson's spawn, you wouldn't happen to mean something along the lines of distant descendant rather than son, would you? I should note that Zagan's rule has been in effect for 400 years, and demons actually have shorter lifespans than humans, rather than what I suppose one might assume in other stories concerning demons and humans, lol. Zagan is an exception to the "shorter lifespan" rule due to his mystical plot device~

That said, as long as you change it so that either, say, Arson came to serve Zagan much later in his reign, or that Brand is a distant descendant of Arson, or any other change to fit the timeline better that you can think of, it'll be good to go as far as I can see!

Name: Breath
Age: 29

Appearance: Stands 5'10" tall and is noticeably pale, almost translucent. His hair is completely platinum, and his eyes range from an icy white to a hauntingly light blue.

Species: Demon
Affiliation: Liberators

Personality: Calm and emotionless, Breath is nearly impossible to read. Never will you witness a smile on his face, nor will you ever hear him raise his voice unnecessarily. The man speaks purely in a monotone, only changing the volume to make himself heard. But he is certainly not devoid of personality, as Breath possesses an almost unrivaled confidence in himself, though is not the kind of confidence that lends itself to arrogance. It is simply the confidence to know what he can and cannot accomplish, even if it means standing against unrivaled odds, or Zagan himself.

Class: Dew Demon/Martial Artist

Enhancements: None

Skills / Equipment: Breath has spent much of his lifetime honing his skills in a special form of martial arts taught among many Dew Demons, and has reached a point where he could easily be referred to as a Master of the art. The art itself revolves around redirecting an opponent's force, using their own bodies against them, as well as identifying and exploiting the enemy's weaknesses with precise, devastating strikes. Besides his hand-to-hand prowess, Breath is fully capable of using his magic to strike with precision at appreciable ranges.

Weaknesses: At times Breath may bite off more than he can chew or overestimate his abilities, and he has a tremendous lack of social insight in terms of emotions.

History: Breath doesn't speak much about his past, usually shrugging off questions by saying, "I trained, I fought, I killed." All that is known for sure is that he showed up in the middle of a small skirmish between the Liberators and a squad of Zagan's troops, and proceeded to slaughter the squad within a minute, utilizing the element of surprise. Ever since then, the Demon man has worked for the Liberators, although he has always been viewed with icy suspicion. To those around him, it seems clear that there must be an ulterior motive as to why a Demon would help humans…

Hopefully this RP will attract more people. And hopefully this character was created as an obvious balance to Ember haha.

Yeah, DBZ7 and I have been trying to get this RP up in some different places for about three years now, and Mary's name used to be "Mari" before I decided to change it, but it seems he forgot to change it lol

As for Doc, don't worry about it just yet, he'll be a Liberator NPC that you meet and learn about when the RP itself starts

Name:

Jaylin Harvey

Alias:

Specter

Age:

25

Appearance:

MHi4xDK.jpg

Species:

Human (mostly)

Affiliation:

Liberator

Personality:

Jaylin is known to be a bit bitter at times, largely due to his tendency to go unnoticed... However, this bitterness has become much more subtle overtime as he learned to use this to his advantage. Over the years, he has developed a rather strong sense of doing what is morally right in his eyes, regardless of the situation. To most strangers, he seems alot more distant, and somewhat cold due to how little he tries to mask the truth when he speaks casually, both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on what the truth is... Though this does not make him a bad liar, when he feels the need to obscure the truth. However, once he is approached correctly, it is more often than not discovered that he has a much warmer side to him, and even an empathetic one really, but to even try approach him in the first place is just a matter of if he is even noticed for long enough.

Class: Stealth Agent/Scout

Enhancements:

- Ocular Implants; Implants in his optical system that allow for him to activate a form of infrared vision with a simple mental command, enabling Jaylin to better assess his surroundings, even when there is little to no light available... A valuable boon when he participates in night missions

- Enhancement Chip; An rather crudely made, but very effective electronic chip that appears to increase his andrenaline production when his body demands it... Increasing his perception of his surroundings, his reaction time, and his stamina for a limited amount of time, while this is not reliable for very long in a straight up fight, this chip is often usefull when he needs to flee from a location as quick as possible.

Skills / Equipment:

- Stealth/Social Transparency; Jaylen always seemed to be the odd one out, the one kid in the crowd who no-one really notices, or remembers, except for maybe his parents, but at this point, they are long gone. This remarkable feat seemed like a burden at first, but it was something that Jaylen quickly adapted to... Beginning to realize the full potential of this strange quirk of his.

- Small arms expert; With fair accuracy, Jaylen is able to wield most light weapons, whether if be pistols, machien pistols, throwing knive, classic daggers, and more... However, due to the fact that he likes to travel light, he has not practiced very often with heavier weapons, more often than not preferring to abandon them in favor of something considerably lighter.

- Martial Arts; Though Jaylen is no expert in this subject, he has picked up enough knowledge from various sources to be able to hold his own in a fist fight, despite his shortcomings in both body mass, strength, and durability. Instead of using his strength in combat, he seeks to use both familiar, and obscure techniques in combat... In addition to the laws of physics to some degree to bring down his opponents, a valuable skill to have when he finds himself in a situation where he risks getting caught.

- Light body armor; In the freak chance Jaylen is hit during his attempts to flee, his light body armor has the potential to provide some protection, namely from small caliber rounds... Anything heavy, armor piercing, explosive, or heck, any laser weaponry will not have a problem penetrating this armor, Jaylen will often seek to avoid drawing enemy attention (and weapons fire) as much as he can.

- Twin pistols; While Jaylen prefers to find weapons on the go, he likes to carry a pair of twin pistols with him, and about two clips of ammunition for each, one filled with standard ammunition, one filled with an form of explosive incendiary ammunition, the kind he typically saves for emergencies.

- Dagger; A small, but very well kept blade that Jaylen will use to perform silent, but swift eliminations of his opponents when it is neccessary, the preferred method to put down his foes, however... This is only if he ever finds himself close enough to his opponents to do so.

Weaknesses:

- Frail; Jaylen, despite his age, is not the best built to endure excessive amounts of damage... Despite having a high amount of pain tolerance due to his increased andrenaline production, he is still not able to live through excessive amounts of punishment nor damage, giving him a very big incentive to keep a low profile at all times when he is out on duty.

- Deer in Headlights; When Jaylen is caught, he is more often than not in over his head... His limited knowledge in Martial Arts and expertise with small arms can only get him so far, if enough attention is drawn towards him, chances are, he will not be able to escape being incapacitaed for very long.

- Negligable Strength; Despite his andrenaline boosts due to his Enhancement Chip, Jaylen is not known to be particularly strong, and therefore has to be considerably more creative in battle... In the case of most foes, he is unable to overpower them with brute force alone, and must rely on his wits to get out of a jam... Simply put, Jaylen is as easy to snap as a twig if he were locked in a struggle of raw strength alone.

- Socially Awkward; This is one of the core reasons he found himself nearly invisible to others for most of his childhood, Jaylen will often either speak at the wrong time, or simply say the wrong things at the wrong time when he speaks... Though he is able to relay most information he knows perfectly fine, even starting up a simple conversation for the sake of socializing becomes increasingly difficult for poor Jaylen, as he is often either not heard, or accidentally gives off the wrong vibes with the way he speaks.

History:

From his childhood, Jaylin had a tendency to go unnoticed, even when he wanted to be noticed... Perhaps he was simply too quiet, his actions were too subtle, or he simply spoke up at all the wrong times, but nevertheless, he found himself practically invisible to most around him. Eventually, after testing the boundaries to this little quirk of his, he found himself able to "tune in" to various conversations going on around him, without giving away that he was ever listening in on whoever was speaking. It didn't take him very long to learn various secrets people had to hide, just by piecing together the bits of information he acquired from different conversations... Despite this, it had never appealed to him to spread around such secrets; the satisfaction he got from doing this did not lie in ratting out others, but rather, it lay in the fact that he alone, would know these secrets without anyone else suspecting a thing, as far as he knew.

This eventually came to change, even just a little when he was drafted into the Liberators, his uncanny, but very usefull ability to remain unnoticed in most situations giving him a very big advantage when employed as a scout, or stealth unit, whether it be to gather intel, or perhaps eliminate opponents when neccessary. Though he does not usually like to get his hands dirty in either case, he acknowledges this is a neccessary evil when fighting against the tyrranical forces of Zagan, an shared enemy amongst the Liberators.

There is still schooling in the cities, of course, but those are only for the demons that live within Zagan controlled areas. For the humans of the Liberators, they work off of self taught medical knowledge or under the guidance of 'Doc', the chief of the medical and robotics department.

Immensely helpful-- thank you.

Also, how long have the Liberators been known as such? One of the profiles made me think less than 8 years, but I thought I'd check. Would there be a problem with my character working closely with "Doc?" Medical and robotics were going to be Gideon's focus-- so perhaps he might be a sort of protege?
