"Good evening, and welcome to the premier broadcast of the COVERT Program."

    "...
That is, the CATALYST Operative Vital Education and Required Training Program-- COVERT for short. We're happy to have you tuning in.
Though, if you are listening to this broadcast right now, you've already been drafted into our organization and don't really have a choice in the matter. You may not remember the drafting process; in which case your memories of it were bound to compromise this organization and were therefore summarily cleaned.
You may even believe that you chose to listen to this broadcast of your own free will; but while you’ll find, as a member of CATALYST, that most phenomena unexplained by science are true, free will is, in fact, a myth."

    Meta Information
The CATALYST Paranormal Investigation and Research Agency, or CPIRA for short, is a government organization (much like the CIA or FBI). They perform the important work of mitigating supernatural threats to the general populace of the United States, and eliminating anything that directly threatens national security.

When they receive word of an impending threat which they are not staffed to handle, they are given permission to enact a draft. They are looking for people who have one great, all-consuming passion in their lives, as that passion generates a kind of energy which attracts the paranormal. Using the resources they have at hand as a secret government organization, they are able to pinpoint these people and get all the pertinent information about their lives.

The COVERT program is an intensive form of training that CATALYST uses to get the completely uninitiated up to speed in the shortest amount of time, and with the least amount of hassle possible.

Their first challenge will be making their way to CPIRA HQ, while receiving instructions by way of radio. If they fail to obey instructions, a senior Operative will be nearby to offer "encouragement," as they have been drafted and their participation in the program is mandatory.

    Character Requirements (open)
All Operatives start out as mundane humans, though they may have psychic or magical powers. They may possibly gain a supernatural nature over the course of the story.

You must fill out an Operative Data Sheet for each character. (You can have up to three characters, if you'd like.) In your Data Sheet, you have to choose a preferred Department for your Operative to work in once they complete their training. You can find info about Departments in the Handbook.

You also need to choose a skillset for your Operative. You can find info about skillsets in the Data Sheet template below. Each basic skillset has three specializations. Your Operative can specialize in up to four areas. If you would like, you can be more specific with your specializaitons. For example, if your character uses hand-to-hand combat, you can list what type of martial art they use.

If you choose a compound skillset (such as Physical + Mental), you have to choose at least one specialization from each category.

    Player Requirements (open)
For this RPG I'm looking for players who are at least Intermediate or Adept, though I'm willing to make allowances for lower skill levels if you're willing to learn and work hard.

Since this is a group RP, I would like at least two posts per week, more if you are able. If you're going to be unavailable for an extended time, let me know and I can work out a convenient, in-game way for your character to be absent for that time.

Other Stuff You Should Know (open)
This game is going to frequently have high stakes, and you may have characters die. I'm not the kind of GM to kill off your characters for no reason, and I'll do my best to never put them in an unwinnable situation, but there is always the risk of screwing up at a key moment. Just be vigilant. And remember that if you DO lose a character, you can always make another.

    Character Creation

To create a CATALYST Operative-in-training, you'll need to fill out an Operative Data Sheet, as found below:

    SECTION ONE: IDENTITY
    PREFERRED NAME: ________________________________________________________

  2. CATALYST History

Despite their claims to the contrary, the United States government has long known of the existence of the paranormal. They are also acutely aware of the risk that paranormal creatures pose to national security. That is why they created the CATALYST Paranormal Research and Investigation Agency, also known as the CPIRA.

Originally founded in 1968, CATALYST was a group of like-minded individuals with a passion for the paranormal. They wanted nothing more out of the group, not much more than a hobby to any of them, than to document proof of what they knew to be true. There are thousands of such paranormal investigation groups just in our fair United States of America, most of which will go nowhere. What, then, made CATALYST so special? Why should anything profitable or influential come out of such a meager startup? Shakespeare once wrote that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” but if that is truly the case, then the fellows in CATALYST were unbelievably apt namers.

There is something about certain people, with certain interests. It's an energy they give off, a passion they exude like the thick, dark smoke of fresh leaves thrown on a hot fire; it's not so much what they are passionate about, but that their passion suits them. It's something they were meant for, something coded into their being like some sort of genetic memory; it's always been there, waiting for them to discover it, and when they do it blossoms like a morning glory at first light. When you gather so many of these deeply passionate individuals, no matter what their passion may be or how opposite it is from the others around them, you can almost feel it in the air. A delicious tension that you can almost taste, like the telltale aroma of food being cooked that you can't quite place the source of. It's like an electricity, and you can feel it raise the hairs on your arms, on the back of your neck, feel it zinging through your veins, and it is thrilling. It is also, as you may have surmised by now, a CATALYST.

The average person will either be repelled by or attracted to such a gathering of passionate souls; repelled by an anxiety that they couldn't measure up to that sort of intensity, or attracted by the deep desire that, one day, they could. The paranormal amplifies that tenfold. If one were to gather five or more of these sorts of people in one place, it would be almost guaranteed that something would show up to watch or to meddle; CATALYST did that and more. All who participated in CATALYST's founding shared a love of and a curiosity about the paranormal, but each had a different passion that they brought to the table. Every one of these individuals was incredibly talented, and brought the best of their abilities to the task at hand when CATALYST was formed. Almost as soon as they'd made their decision to investigate things of a paranormal nature, those very things began to seek them out.

At first, the things that sought them out were fairly harmless. Perhaps they were merely inquisitive, or perhaps they were scouts of a sort for the things that came later. At any rate, it did not take long for their paranormal investigation group, their CATALYST, to become oh so much more than a hobby. Their lives were at stake, as were the lives of their families. They began to throw themselves into their investigation, to the point of neglecting other duties. There was a point at which their entire community was in peril, but by working alongside certain law enforcement officials, they managed to divert the crisis. It was at that point that it was decided; CATALYST needed to be a proper business. The members simply did not have time in their lives for day jobs as well as the turmoil of dealing with vicious paranormal entities.

CATALYST began taking contracts from people for a nominal fee. They did good work, made good money, but got next to no recognition. Years passed, members came and went, all, somehow, with that same strange passion for something in their lives. They moved around, changed headquarters. The size of the group see-sawed back and forth, anywhere from five to thirty members at any given time. It wasn't until over a decade after their founding that CATALYST got their so-called “big break.”

In 1984, CATALYST, their headquarters at the time being in the nation's capital, got a contract from the federal government. While I can't tell just what it was that they did, I can tell you that the contract was a rousing success, and they were paid very, very well for their hard work. Early the following year, the government contacted them again and they were hired on as the federal government's official investigation team for events of a paranormal nature. And thus the CATALYST Paranormal Investigative and Research Association was born.

In the subsequent years, the Agency has become an efficient machine. They have established training modules, a highly organized system of departments and responsibilities, and unbelievably tight security, as befits the nature of their work. Unfortunately, they are far too short-staffed for the amount of work that they have in store for them. They've received permission from the highest power in the land to enact a draft, and have curated a list of that certain, special kind of person that they are looking for. When they reach out to you, you will answer. You will have no other choice.

    Planes of Reality

In this world, there are three planes of reality: The Neutral Plane (where we live), the Chaotic Plane, and the Ordered Plane.

The Neutral Plane is made up of four Elements, which you're probably already pretty familiar with: Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. There are also certain Forces at work, which keep our Plane running smoothly. Two of these Forces are native to our plane. They are Eris, which encourages Growth, and Eros, which encourages Change. The other three forces that hold our Plane together leak through the barrier between our Plane and Chaos; they are: Magnetism, Gravity, and Electricity.

Due to Eris and Eros, things on our Plane are constantly growing, changing, and evolving. This means that our Elements are always in flux. When an Element becomes too abundant within a certain area, the barrier between Planes weakens, so that some of the excess Element can leak across to Chaos; but the barrier must be crossed both ways. So, when our Earth, Air, Fire, and Water cross the barrier, Magnetism, Gravity, and Electricity come back across in equal measure. This is why there are thunderstorms. Too much Water accumulates in an area and is exchanged for Electricity. Sometimes, though, the barrier can weaken too much and allow other things to cross the barrier. This is the cause of most paranormal activity. Creatures from the Chaotic Plane sneak through the barrier while it is weak, and cause varying degrees of havoc.

The barrier between our Plane and the Ordered Plane is much more difficult to cross. That barrier can only be penetrated in the presence of Quintessence, which is a force generated when all four of our Elements are in harmony. This happens rarely, is generally confined to a very limited location, and is usually only for a very short window of time. Because of this, entities from Order only very rarely cross over into our Plane.

  5. Note for if you're making a character:
"X" in codenames always indicates a variable.

For example, CRUX's codename means "Create Ruses Until _____", with the blank changing based on the situation at hand. So, it could be "Create Ruses Until [told otherwise]" or "Create Ruses Until [death]" or "Create Ruses Until [subject proves worth]". Or whatever.

Also, codenames don't have to necessarily make grammatical sense. They can be pretty obtuse.
JUDGE's name means "Justified Under the Devoted Grand Endeavor" which doesn't really... mean anything the exact way that it's phrased, but is intended to basically mean "everything I do is for the greater good, so don't question it."

  8. @LoliWithAHat Great! Only thing I see is that your codename and acronym don't match up.

You could either change JING to JINA, or you could maybe change "Activities" to "Goings-On"?

  15. @LoliWithAHat This looks great!

@Kitt Your sheet is almost perfect, but could you summarize her primary interest in a single word for me?

@Jihae For your skill specializations, I need you to pick from these:
Since AIM is a Mental / Support character, she can have any combination of specializations from the Mental pool and the Support pool. You can absolutely keep the things you listed!! I just need to know which categories those would fall under.

If I'm understanding them right, I think Depictukinesis would fall under Psychokinesis, which is your mind affecting the world around you; Mushin would probably fall under either Telepathy (as your mind affecting itself) or Augmentation (which is basically any buffing skill, like the Double Team and Swagger in Pokemon). Neuropsychology would either be Telepathy or Psychosomasis, depending on how you're intending it to be used. "Neuro" suggests the physical brain, but "psychology" suggests the mind.

  17. Also @Kitt I really like your color coding there. Can I steal that for the OP?

  18. I hope I understood you correctly (after composing a whole story in another language, my English has no meaning whatsoever right now) because I just made edits to the CS. If this is not what you are looking for, this is completely my fault and if you don't mind, please correct me again. ^^;

EDIT: You know what, I'm going to make my CS look pretty. Beware the BB Codes!

  19. @LoliWithAHat Here's JING's official CPIRA Operative Documentation sheet!

If you'd like to add specifics to your skillsets like I did on the NPC sheets (like this one: [IMG] then just let me know and I'll update the sheet. :)

Your characters won't be getting these sheets right away in-game, but they will eventually, and I want you to get to see them. OuO

  20. @Jihae here's AIM's official documentation, as well! Let me know if I mismatched your cool sub-skills to the wrong categories.
