Empire State Alliance- Hospital
When the Deluge came, it brought many problems, polluted waters, mutant animals, difficult means of travelling. This meant the every faction had to struggle with not only these things but their limited resources, and land, as most of New York and probably the rest of the world was under water. Usually soldiers of the Alliance went out into the waters to search for more resources and food- with the help of navigators like Lucy-but often came back short handed and even injured from the creatures that lived just beyond the surface of the water.
Today was one of those days, a few of their soldiers, while out on a patrol, were attacked by some Fiji Mermaids. For the most part they left the battle unscathed by serious injury, some bites and claw marks. Most of the soldiers could be patched up efficiently in the infirmary and require a few hours of rest, save one. He was the first to encounter the attack of the Fiji Mermaids, standing to close to their boats railing, he was an easy target. The Mermaid made swift work of one his limbs, left his arm hanging by a few tendons in his shoulder.
Dr. Francis was in charge of the amputation and needed Lucy to be his Surgical Technician as well as the Physician Assistant. Being an on the rise civilization again meant that their hospitals were sometimes short staffed, so those who worked in health care had to put on multiple hats during a shift. Lucy was fairly good at stitching up damaged bodies and identifying surgical tools, so Dr. Francis designated her as such when he had to do surgeries.
As the patient was rushed to the surgery room Lucy had already dressed herself in surgical scrubs, now making sure all the tools are on on the table prepped and ready to go for surgery. The soldier was being put under anesthesia when Lucy had brought in the medical equipment, and for the the first time she got a good look a his arm. She had an image of what it looked like from the report but her idea was way off and a lot less gruesome. The man's breathing was a shallow and a bit raspy from screaming possibly. His right arm hung dislocated from his shoulder blade, bloody with wide teeth marks that actually shredded the skin around his bone. Lucy felt sorry for the man, not only did would he have to learn how to write with his left hand, but he also could not go back into service with a dismembered arm.
As the nurses finally got him under and comfortable in walked Dr. Francis, who's grey eyes were steely and focused, ready to work on his helpless subject. The monitors were set up, lights dimmed all except for the surgical ones and body covered with a cloth, similar to the fabric and color of the surgery scrubs. Lucy stood next to Dr. Francis who, even with such a cool exterior, smiled under his face mask and nods towards the table, asking for his first device.

Lucy was hunched over the soldiers body, her movements where quick yet precise as she sowed the gaping hole where his arm once was, shut. Her cohorts stood around her watching, silent to insure she stayed focused and calm. Which Lucy always was, even in heated situations she was remained lax and in control. The whole was patched up, cleaning it once more before wrapping some gauze around the soldiers nub, the surgery was a success. Though sadly the soldier would not be able to go back into combat for the Fiji mermaid had chewed off his dominant arm.
Lucy sighed, relief washed over her body as the soldier was whisked off to a room for careful watch and rehabilitation. Nurses scattered, taking off their scrubs to return to their normal routine. Lucy did the same. While redressing herself she sent a silent prayer to the soldier for a speedy recovery. In about 10 minutes Lucy was normal Lucy again, she stepped out of the surgery room and into the hallway of the first floor in the east wing.
A hand crept onto her shoulder and the brunette jumped, turning swiftly to only find Dr. Francis, hand in the air with a lax smile on his face.
"I didn't mean to scare you Lucy! I just wanted to congradulate you on a job well done. Your stitching technique has become quite impressive."
Lucy gave him a hard stare and then sighed. "Thank you Dr. though, that credit belongs to you, you've been very positive as a mentor."
Francis shook his head with a chuckle. "No no, Lucy. I only gave you the information and tools, you did the work part yourself. Be proud of that." His hands moved into the pockets of his white coat as grey eyes meet brown. "You were always a fast learner."
Lucy averted her eyes, never one to take compliments well. She only gave him a curt nod, before trying to escape his gaze. Of course he stopped her before she could get to far. Lucy had noticed since the morning that he was rolling around an idea in the back of his mind. "What is it Francis?"
He smile grew more energetic."I'd wish you'd call me by my first name more often, we're colluges, and no else does it besides you. But anyway," he coughed, voice taking a more serious tone, as if he were trying to make an offer. "As I said before, You learn new skills very quickly, obvious competent and eager no less. As your senior I was hoping to advance your knowledge, hopefully helping you become a surgeon like myself?"
Though his offer generous Lucy was cautious, titling her head with an unsure look about her. "That's all well and fine Dr. Francis, but, I would need to be certified and would need some sort of medical school education. And I sadly have neither."
"I know good and well of that, but this isn't like the old world. This one doesn't have all the fancy colleges and higher education as before. The Empire needs all the doctors it can get. I can assure I can teach you everything there is to know, because as you know, I am an excellent teacher."
The brunette slowly crossed her arms over her chest. "That would take up personal time then Doctor. I would hate to impose."
Francis laughed at this comment eyes full of mirth and memories. "Since when were you the one to be so coy with free time Louisa?" He quickly regretted saying that as Lucy's aura shifted. A stern look upon her face. He coughed once more, now becoming a bit flustered. "Lucy, I assure you, that I remember our agreement. And I promise that this time, it will be strictly business. I just want to help you. You could make for a wonderful doctor."
Lucy was still irritated but her eyes softened. "Francisco..."
A voice buzzed over the intercom and they both looked up, Lucy had been summoned to the foyer of the hospital. Grey eyes meet brown once more as Lucy took a step back from Dr. Francis. "I have to go. We'll discuss this later. Okay?" She didn't give him a chance to respond before making a hasty escape to the elevator. She was hoping whoever was down in the Foyer would keep her long enough to end her shift without seeing those grey eyes again.
