Empire State Alliance- Hospital

When the Deluge came, it brought many problems, polluted waters, mutant animals, difficult means of travelling. This meant the every faction had to struggle with not only these things but their limited resources, and land, as most of New York and probably the rest of the world was under water. Usually soldiers of the Alliance went out into the waters to search for more resources and food- with the help of navigators like Lucy-but often came back short handed and even injured from the creatures that lived just beyond the surface of the water.

Today was one of those days, a few of their soldiers, while out on a patrol, were attacked by some Fiji Mermaids. For the most part they left the battle unscathed by serious injury, some bites and claw marks. Most of the soldiers could be patched up efficiently in the infirmary and require a few hours of rest, save one. He was the first to encounter the attack of the Fiji Mermaids, standing to close to their boats railing, he was an easy target. The Mermaid made swift work of one his limbs, left his arm hanging by a few tendons in his shoulder.

Dr. Francis was in charge of the amputation and needed Lucy to be his Surgical Technician as well as the Physician Assistant. Being an on the rise civilization again meant that their hospitals were sometimes short staffed, so those who worked in health care had to put on multiple hats during a shift. Lucy was fairly good at stitching up damaged bodies and identifying surgical tools, so Dr. Francis designated her as such when he had to do surgeries.

As the patient was rushed to the surgery room Lucy had already dressed herself in surgical scrubs, now making sure all the tools are on on the table prepped and ready to go for surgery. The soldier was being put under anesthesia when Lucy had brought in the medical equipment, and for the the first time she got a good look a his arm. She had an image of what it looked like from the report but her idea was way off and a lot less gruesome. The man's breathing was a shallow and a bit raspy from screaming possibly. His right arm hung dislocated from his shoulder blade, bloody with wide teeth marks that actually shredded the skin around his bone. Lucy felt sorry for the man, not only did would he have to learn how to write with his left hand, but he also could not go back into service with a dismembered arm.

As the nurses finally got him under and comfortable in walked Dr. Francis, who's grey eyes were steely and focused, ready to work on his helpless subject. The monitors were set up, lights dimmed all except for the surgical ones and body covered with a cloth, similar to the fabric and color of the surgery scrubs. Lucy stood next to Dr. Francis who, even with such a cool exterior, smiled under his face mask and nods towards the table, asking for his first device.

~~~~~~~~
Lucy was hunched over the soldiers body, her movements where quick yet precise as she sowed the gaping hole where his arm once was, shut. Her cohorts stood around her watching, silent to insure she stayed focused and calm. Which Lucy always was, even in heated situations she was remained lax and in control. The whole was patched up, cleaning it once more before wrapping some gauze around the soldiers nub, the surgery was a success. Though sadly the soldier would not be able to go back into combat for the Fiji mermaid had chewed off his dominant arm.
Lucy sighed, relief washed over her body as the soldier was whisked off to a room for careful watch and rehabilitation. Nurses scattered, taking off their scrubs to return to their normal routine. Lucy did the same. While redressing herself she sent a silent prayer to the soldier for a speedy recovery. In about 10 minutes Lucy was normal Lucy again, she stepped out of the surgery room and into the hallway of the first floor in the east wing.
A hand crept onto her shoulder and the brunette jumped, turning swiftly to only find Dr. Francis, hand in the air with a lax smile on his face.
"I didn't mean to scare you Lucy! I just wanted to congradulate you on a job well done. Your stitching technique has become quite impressive."
Lucy gave him a hard stare and then sighed. "Thank you Dr. though, that credit belongs to you, you've been very positive as a mentor."
Francis shook his head with a chuckle. "No no, Lucy. I only gave you the information and tools, you did the work part yourself. Be proud of that." His hands moved into the pockets of his white coat as grey eyes meet brown. "You were always a fast learner."
Lucy averted her eyes, never one to take compliments well. She only gave him a curt nod, before trying to escape his gaze. Of course he stopped her before she could get to far. Lucy had noticed since the morning that he was rolling around an idea in the back of his mind. "What is it Francis?"
He smile grew more energetic."I'd wish you'd call me by my first name more often, we're colluges, and no else does it besides you. But anyway," he coughed, voice taking a more serious tone, as if he were trying to make an offer. "As I said before, You learn new skills very quickly, obvious competent and eager no less. As your senior I was hoping to advance your knowledge, hopefully helping you become a surgeon like myself?"
Though his offer generous Lucy was cautious, titling her head with an unsure look about her. "That's all well and fine Dr. Francis, but, I would need to be certified and would need some sort of medical school education. And I sadly have neither."
"I know good and well of that, but this isn't like the old world. This one doesn't have all the fancy colleges and higher education as before. The Empire needs all the doctors it can get. I can assure I can teach you everything there is to know, because as you know, I am an excellent teacher."
The brunette slowly crossed her arms over her chest. "That would take up personal time then Doctor. I would hate to impose."
Francis laughed at this comment eyes full of mirth and memories. "Since when were you the one to be so coy with free time Louisa?" He quickly regretted saying that as Lucy's aura shifted. A stern look upon her face. He coughed once more, now becoming a bit flustered. "Lucy, I assure you, that I remember our agreement. And I promise that this time, it will be strictly business. I just want to help you. You could make for a wonderful doctor."
Lucy was still irritated but her eyes softened. "Francisco..."
A voice buzzed over the intercom and they both looked up, Lucy had been summoned to the foyer of the hospital. Grey eyes meet brown once more as Lucy took a step back from Dr. Francis. "I have to go. We'll discuss this later. Okay?" She didn't give him a chance to respond before making a hasty escape to the elevator. She was hoping whoever was down in the Foyer would keep her long enough to end her shift without seeing those grey eyes again.
A black jet ski glided swiftly across the waters, leaving behind trails of waves as the rider maneuvers her boat with ease. Jane was heading towards the capital of the Alliance, as she has matters of biomedical importance to attend on a hospital that resided there.
Approaching the hospital, she carefully parked her jet ski by a parking dock for boats. Turning off the engine, she grabbed the tow rope of her vehicle and leapt unto the dock. Tying it on a nearby pole to prevent her ride from floating away, she secured it in place and removed her helm. Fuschia pink eyes glinted for a second until they were hidden again with a pair of aviator shades. She was wearing a civillian attire, but kept her utility belt with her, sans any weapon visible. With her research papers in a folder secured under her left arm, she walked towards the entrance of the hospital.
Jane reached the research facility where biomedical scientists focused intently on their work, and adorned herself with the doctor's coat that they are assigned to wear. "Funny how we still wear these even though we're not technically doctors." An older woman spoke next to her, intensely focused on looking through a microscope as she took notes on a page of a notebook. The woman then looked up and shifted her glasses to get a good look at Jane.
"Not a scratch... yet you reek of blood from the sea. What happened out there?" She asked Jane as the raven-haired soldier put down her shades to reveal her fuschia-colored eyes once more.
"My men and I encountered a beached sea serpent and I had to slice open an orifice on the poor creature, doctor. I was in quite of a rush today to submit these." Jane showed the lady the fruit of her research. "My hypotheses were correct, copulated female Fiji mermaids secrete an amniotic fluid that can withstand high levels of acidity on contaminated waters. Effective for conducting surgery on a victim exposed to acidic waters." She flipped a page open to reveal data about her work.
Glinda squinted her eyes closely as she read the papers. "I can't imagine how you're able to balance being a captain and a researcher, I barely have any time for my children anymore." She said in monotone voice, as she returned the papers back to Jane.
Many lost their loved ones prior the Deluge, while those who survived lost their time and themselves to save what was left from the apocalypse. It was rather depressing, with Jane knowing that Glinda has a family whom she continuously saves as she lost herself deep into her work. "You could bring them here some time, Glinda. I'm quite sure the hospital wouldn't-" She suggested but the old woman stopped her. "Not now, Jane. You should be submitting these papers to the head researchers for them to analyze your work." Jane could tell that the old woman does not want to talk about anything concerning her family, and respected her need of space.
"I... I will, doctor."
Jane nodded before walking away from Glinda, and approached a man typing on his computer. She handed him the file and was off to leave the hospital as she walked towards the foyer when her digital armband notified her of a call. She opened the holographic interface and a soldier appeared on her screen.
The soldier stated about violent activity of sharks at a dock town known as Clearwater in the Neutral Territory, with the soldier and two patrolling platoons requested an order from their captain to engage in supressing the violence or not. A life feed attached to the report shows sharks wreaking havoc on land. She noticed the Coalition forces and, something else within the video. This made Jane thought for a moment, as she sat on the chairs of the front row in the waiting area.
"This is Captain Myros. I need the sniper of each platoon to engage in exterminating the sharks within fifty feet away from the dock town. No one under my command should alert the Coalition forces of your presence, is that clear?" Jane spoke through her comms, and a reply came quickly stating that they heeded her command.
Turning off her armband, Jane laid back on her seat and exhaled in exhaustion. Today was quite a hectic, post-apocalyptic day for anyone to experience.
Davison gathered his board of directors, alongside a number of Coalition CEO's, comprising some of the wealthiest men and women in the whole city. He had seen the news report of the battle going on in Clearwater, and it became clear that an emergency response was needed. Clearwater was a major asset to Davison's operations in the Territory, but more importantly, his son was still there in the chaos. The businessman watched his colleagues for their reactions, only to find virtually no indication that they cared about the people trapped. He expected as much. Sitting at the end of the glossy oval-shaped table, he acknowledged the fact that he was one of them.
The only reason that these people hadn't killed each another already was because trade proved useful.
A lowly secretary offered drinks to everyone seated at the table. Tea, by the looks of it. Davison knew that the common man had to struggle to get clean water, or pray for rain. Desalination was the Alliance's niche. He spotted the manager of the Coalition's water monopoly at the opposite end of the table, slowly shaking his head at the broadcast. Dead customers were always bad for business. Davison thought about the inconvenience at hand, and he decided to speak up. There was something that had lurked in the back of his mind for some time.
"Ladies and gentleman," he began with an air of authority, "the situation in Clearwater has gotten out of hand. A shark attack on this scale is utterly unprecedented. They are not known to target densely-populated areas, and for this reason, I believe that someone is trying to halt the recovery of the dossier. It is up to us to discover who this may be. Should we fail, our enemies will gain the upper hand. I am calling for the immediate occupation of Clearwater."
The room had gone silent. What Davison had suggested was tantamount to invasion. It would create distrust from the other neutral towns, and provide endless propaganda for the Coalition's foes. "All in favor, raise your hand."
Saorise docked the boat a little farther out from where they had been originally so they didn't have to fight sharks on their way in . She caught the hatchet that Rhu tossed to her and and started back towards the market, before turning back as if she forgot something, "We don't expect you to wait or come with us. But it'd be nice if you did. Thanks for your help till now stop by my shop next time you're in Brooklyn, I'll give you a discount."
The two of them set off, Rhu taking the lead. The plan was to stay out of sight as much as possible, grab the bag, and then sprint back to the boat. Hopefully the sharks would be too busy trying to kill other people that weren't them. They had been able to successfully sneak about halfway there when Rhu suddenly grabbed Saorsie and pulled her behind a pile of crates, "I saw a NPR boat. And the woman who was on it. That's the bitch who shot me. If she sees me she's not going to be happy."
"I'll put myself between you and the dock where she should be coming from. You're small. Stay behind me."
Unfortunately their luck ran out as soon as the left the shelter of the crates. They had been attempting to reach a stall and take shelter there next, but a few sharks that they thought they could get past noticed them. One of them swung down an arm in attack. Rhu quickly drew her staff and managed to redirect the blow enough for them to avoid it. They were far too strong for her to attempt to block their attacks head on. As Saorise chopped off his arm and then went in for the kill, Rhu covered her back from the other shark approaching them. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Emilia jumping off her boat and into the water. Although she was doing her best to keep out of sight behind Saorise and the sharks, it wouldn't be that difficult to spot her if someone looked in their direction.
Ron had been busy dealing with thieves, he sits making a cup of tea and is humming softly he fed the body's to the ocean and cleaned the place up flawlessly, sure he felt a tiny bit bad but if he didn't show he's not to be toyed with from time to time it would show the wrong message. it's that time of year again fuck i really don't like dealing with them till something better comes along playing nice is the only way, that aside though i hear there's news of a pro thief and another warlord that makes two of them'.
After a few more minutes the tea is done and he strains it and then closes the lid and pours himself a cup of tea, he also grabs a biscuit and starts to slowly eat it
Ron enjoys his tea for a good thirty minutes then takes out his radio then starts to send a signal to mao after a few minutes or useing the radio in code he's done, he then does the same thing for roak waiting for him to pick up on the code.
Robert tapped his fingers on his table as the executives stood and left the board room. They cast their votes as fishermen would their nets. He was left staring at the wall as plans formulated inside his head, yet it did not take long until the blaring of his handheld radio caught his attention. Davison grimaced, knowing that very, very few people knew his frequency. He hoped this call would be worth his time. The transmission came in through buzzing static, the cacophony of a hive. He recognized the signal's origin to be that of an old colleague. Purple Wolf... a man of great mystery and talent. Robert held the radio close to his ear as he answered the call.
"Ah, so you still live. It is good to hear from you."
"Ah, so you still live. It is good to hear from you."
Ron then holds the button down and says" yeah i'm alive and kicking special training sure comes in handy in times like this, but that aside you sound well the world you entered suits you well" "Oh before i forget here's some advice Lions are often greedy creatures so it's always wise to make sure you have extra meat to give them, and a caged lion meaning the people are more likely to forget they are in a cage if you feed them generously from time to time". Purple wolf grins and pauses for a minute then says" As for how you take my advice well i know your more flexible that most of them so it will be interesting to see how you use what i've told you".
Ron thinks for a minute then says" Lastly i've set up our old spot at mao's and incase you've forgotten no one is going to fuck with mao and her friends and family unless they want to die so we can relax there, but the reason above all is i found an experimental way to make energy last a little long but the material croium is still some what unstable so show you a blue print of how it works".
"Also because were closer than most i'll give you a discount, all i want is for my energy and gas to be knocked down a little your people are starting to kill me"
Davison gave a half-smile at hearing Ron's voice again. He had a penchant for antiquated phrasing and elaborate metaphors, something that the two men had in common to some extent. Robert listened closely to what Purple Wolf was offering, and it piqued his interest. Energy efficiency was crucial, not only for the Coalition but for the entire city. Keeping the lights on was imperative for just about everyone. The businessman recalled Mao's establishment fondly, as he did for any place that discrete deals could be made in. It didn't take long before he made his reply.
"I'm impressed, Wolf. I'll meet you there in about an hour."
It was risky to say more than that. He checked his office for bugs on numerous occasions, but one could never be too sure. Davison checked out of the building on short notice, only notifying his personal secretary about the departure. He brought one security guard along for the trip, a masked specialist and one of the Coalition's fighting elite. Taking his own luxurious boat through the waterlogged city streets, it did not take long until Davison reached the normal-looking shop.
"Wait here," he instructed the guard. Robert was armed in case things turned for the worse.
Looking around the premises for the fellow trader, Robert spotted a familiar face at last. He took a seat opposite to Purple Wolf. The atmosphere within was nothing suspect, just as he remembered it. It was perfect.
"Let's take a look at these blueprints of yours. I can promise you a handsome reward if it lives up to expectations."
Ron brings out the first part and then the material a purple and gold stone he was talking about and says" I'll give you this as a token of good faith it's not that i don't trust you because thus far you've been very good to me, but to be blunt i don't trust those around you because i've heard some story's that don't sit well with me". Ron pauses for a a moment then says" mao and me go back even longer than i've known you and their are guards just not the kind you would expect but that's another things i wouldn't bone those that are good to me". " Also as you know there were some in the group your in that did try to double cross me and you know what happend to them".
Mao pours them some really good sake and says" And i thought i was twisted and scary till i met you but then again in this world sometimes you've got to prove a point ". " Oh before i forget there's rumor of a new warlord and master thief and assassin around, as for how true i'm not fully sure still gathering info on them". " I can say from what i do know is i hope your buddy's don't get greedy and try and take their land by force that would be most unwise".
Ron leans back and sips his sake and says" Ah that yes i almost forgot about them another pain in my ass and it's defiantly true but for the time being them have gone back into hiding after whacking some big that tried to steal from them". " But that's another thing for another time, in the mean time i would like to know how long it will take them to make good on what i requested over the radio".
Emilia hasn't gotten 5 feet through the water before a giant hulking shark came from under her. With her swift movement she waited before he was right under her then she jerked her body back before she suddenly was on top of the shark's neck, but before the shark could grab her she quickly pulled out her pistol and shot it twice in the shell before kicking herself off of the sea dweller's body. She made her way up to the platform without any more trouble.
Seeing the chaos of the Clearwater Emilia quickly turned to see if there were any civilians. They were scattered and unlikely to be of any help. Emilia might as well quell this storm while she was here. In this commotion, the dossier was probably already gone.
Emilia came up into the heart of the docks searching for any abused workers that might need her help. Seeing a group of small children Emilia ran up only to see they were being chased down by a gang of three sharks. Emilia pulled them aside as the darting sharks tumbled over each other as they slammed againest a wall. Emilia shot at them before rushing the children go away. Two of shark are still in pursuit. Emilia shot while she ran but it was no use she couldn't get a good shot. To her right, as she was running she noticed two adults hiding behind a crate. "Shoot at them, shoot at them," Emilia called out as she pointed to the duo behind them.
A sudden splurt of blood sprang out of the back head one of the two sharks. The anthropomorphic predator slipped and dropped its whole form on the ground it once ran on. What sits there now is merely a fresh corpse of a shark, as its companion continues to ensue the pursuit on the panicking children.
It was a silent and quick shot, as to not alert any officials within the vicinity of Clearwater. Just as what Captain Myros ordered.
Hiding within a good fifty feet away from the town, the sniper prepares the next bullet. Loading the .22LR with the bullet, the sniper peers into the scope, looks for the next target, and waits.
Lucy's steps were brisk as she made her way to the waiting room. She rarely ever got called there herself, her presence during operations and patient visits would go unnoticed. For Lucy was quiet, though very helpful her demeanor was a bit more reserved than most doctors. So it was rare for her to get thank yous from patients, not that it bothered her.
With slender fingers, Lucy pushed the swinging doors open, leaving the borders that separated the two worlds. The brunette immediately noticed Jet black hair. "Oh Jane, it's good to see you." The two women exchanged pleasantries in the quite room. To outsiders, it seemed that Jane was Lucy's only friend, a rare site considering they were both obvious introverts. Lucy's eye brightened a bit to see her colleague.
"How have you been? How's the Mermaid research going?"
"Lucy? Oh my, it's been such a long time!" Jane sat up and greeted the woman in front of her. The two were close friends for a long time, and great colleagues in the medical field. Despite the two being somewhat reserved in the social public eye, she knew Louisa excelled well in conversing with her patients, offering them reassurance and comfort within the hospital walls.
All of the patients needed this spark of hope this woman is offering. Especially in this era of hopelessness brought by the onslaught of the Deluge.
"I'm doing quite well, Lucy. I also hope that they approve my research, there have been many incidents of both bystanders and my men exposed to acidic waters. I have to ensure that the remaining 1.3 million population don't get any more harmed than now, since water is literally present everywhere." Jane stated with concern. Then, a thought nagged at the back of her head on whether she needs to be at Clearwater or not.
"Say, when do you usually go out to explore and report your findings to the government?" Jane inquired to her friend. It can be slightly obvious that she is offering Louisa an invitation to venture outside.
Good faith, a concept that had been lost on Davison for quite some time. The Coalition speculated on the market constantly but never acted on 'faith'. Two things first came to mind as Ron spoke, that he was right to distrust Davison's associates, and that the past was the past. Everyone in this city betrays their allies at one point or another. It was business all the same, and the tycoon smiled knowingly. Denying the accusation would be pointless. Forgiveness carried its own price tag more often than not, and Davison relished that fact, as he could outbid anyone therein. He cautiously accepted the odd-looking stone that Ron held.
"A warlord?" he whispered before grabbing the sake. Alcohol was something he indulged in with extreme moderation, as drunkards are the most easily swindled type of folk. "This city has dozens of them. However, my colleagues are interested in securing the peace," which was shorthand for toppling any order hostile to the Coalition. Peace, like forgiveness, also had a cost. It could be paid in blood or gold and Davison hardly cared which tithe would be accepted. He considered Ron's demand, only to reach into his pocket, drawing out a silver-hued card.
"I think you might like this. It's my personal fuel rations card, and with it, I get half price on energy. Something tells me you could use one."
At this point seeing that the shark behind her had been shot by some sniper from some other place, Emilia turned around and with a clear precise shot, a cone fo guts flew out behind the shark. Then in that instance, it collapsed before Emilia and the two children.
Emilia almost felt an anger to these children. Why didn't they fight back, why didn't they seem more determined?
At this thought, Emilia took the little girls waist and twisted it to get her attention. Her deathly scare looked into the girl's green orbs. "Why didn't you fight, you should have fought you little worm. Fight why from these beasts and your oppressors. Seeing this the boy came forward to comfort Emilia, but Emilia was already done. She got up and started her way to where she heard the gone shot waving her head to see if they could come out.
The two children seemed to not leave. The girl seemed not to want to leave her side as if she didn't have a choice in the matter. On the other hand, the boy seemed like he wanted to leave. Emilia and the two children started their way to the sound of the gunshot, perhaps there were survivors.
