Even in her alcohol-induced haze, Claire could not help drawing the parallels between the Eagles' lyrics she was hearing and everything that had happened up to that point. The entirety of hers and Clark's situation could be compared to the "Hotel California." It wasn't a situation that they could apparently ever get out of; and if there was an end to it, there were only two results: good or bad. Heaven or hell. Clark and Claire both entered the situation of their own accord, willing (and perhaps not-so-willing) prisoners of their want for justice. Kilmont was a beast, one that would take more than knives to kill. Did that mean there was no way out except death? Grimacing, Claire shook her head to clear it. Of all the places for her mind to wander, it had to go to the most depressing one. She sat up, grumbling to herself, and looked over her shoulder at Clark.
"Oh? Pray tell, how exactly do I owe you?" Claire mused, unable to help the smirk on her face. She found Clark's drunkenness amusing and watched as he chugged what remained of the Jack Daniels. A laugh escaped when he hit the floor and stopped abruptly when he spoke again. The impact of those words seemed to jar her into sobriety if only for a moment. "Take It to the Limit" started and yet again Claire was making comparisons. An overwhelming mix of emotion washed over her with a lot of guilt and uncertainty. "I don't regret it.." She said in hardly more than a choked whisper as her gaze dropped to the floor. "There's only one thing I truly regret." Claire thought. Slowly she stood and made her way over to the chair.
"I don't regret my decision, Clark. My career isn't worth anything if let go of what I sought it for in the first place. I wanted to protect people, seek justice; but sometimes the justice system isn't always just and you have to work outside it. This... this is so much more than that. It's life as we know it, yours and mine... If I chose my career over you, then I would have abandoned everything I stand for. My career wouldn't mean anything. If I chose my career over you... that would be the biggest regret of my life; and I don't think I could live with that. I don't want any regrets. I can't lose anyone else..." Claire relented, looking into Clark's eyes. She gingerly touched the side of his face and pressed her lips to his.
