I couldn't help but grin to myself at Ellie's determination. Once she set her mind to something, nothing could deter her. By the time she had finished digging the trench, I was done with the furrows. It was time to plant the seeds. I set my hoe down on the ground outside the garden patch and hurried off to retrieve them and the potatoes. I separated the strawberry, herbs, and grape seeds from the rest of the group, knowing that we didn't have a trellis for the grape vines to grow on and that strawberries tend to take over rather quickly. They would go best by the house where we could easily pluck the berries to munch on. The herbs would also be better closer to the house. As for the grapes, I'd have to figure something else out there.
But the vegetables and squashes would grow well out here. I set the package of cucumber seeds at the end of the first row, then the lettuce at the next one, followed by the beans, tomatoes, potatoes, and pumpkins. I demonstrated to Ellie how deep the holes needed to be in the furrow and how far apart the seeds needed to be to be able to breathe. Then, I set her to work on the cucumbers as I began cutting the potatoes in half to plant those.
