Biography
Clara's mother died at birth, and Clara's father is an abusive drunk. He would often blame her for his wife's death, and in result, often beat her. Clara found refuge in the few books she managed to get her hands on, and school was her sanctuary, which only fuel her love for knowledge. She felt useful and important whenever she knew something someone else didn't. Clara always tried to brave through her father's abuse, though. His verbal abuse, although still stung, had less and less damage as she grew older. His physical abuse, on the other hand, was a lot harder to overcome. There were many days she would try to keep her mouth shut, unwilling to allow him the satisfaction to hear her screaming in pain. After one very bad incident in particular, one that resulted in a broken bone, she decided to research methods. She taught herself the basic to first aid this way.
When Clara was 11, the teachers and adults around her gained suspicion. They noticed that Clara would often only wear long sleeves clothes, despite the warm weather outside. They also noticed Clara's quite long history in the hospital, and they all tried to question her about it. At first, Clara just refused to speak about her father. But one of her teacher brought her to a neighborhood church. The priest and nuns talked to her there, and though they never pushed for information, she quickly found refuge there as well. She often stayed in their library, chatting with them and reading her books. They even gave her journals to help her keep her information in.
Finally, after a particularly bad day of abuse, Clara broke down and told the priests that she trusted. They told the authorities and quickly found the help that she needed. At first, they tried to put her up for adoption, but she was too old for anybody to want her. And even if they did, she was too cold to them, and she couldn't possibly change herself to be the warm fuzzy child they were all looking for. So, she was passed from foster care to foster care.
She hates every single one of them. Time after time again, she had to endure several different forms of abuse and neglect – either from the foster family or from the other children in the foster homes. Every time she switched, she just kept on becoming more and more dependent on her books. She still visits the church, especially to store her obtained books or journals.
