Alex, ignoring Becka's earlier statement, jumped up to hit the ball.
He never realized what danger he was in.
He didn't know the consequence of not understanding a warning tone.
And he makes a lot of mistakes, but he spiked the ball perfectly, it hit the mud.

He was so much taller there was no way Becka could have hit the ball first. They had sent it over the net on the opposite side of Alex, it was no where within her reach. Lacey's right arm extended under the net towards her unsuspecting victim; Becka bolted forward trying to put herself between the two. But Lacey recoiled her right arm letting Becka's momentum propel her one step farther and reached behind her sister, left hand catching hold of the mud at the cuff of Alex's basketball shorts as his feet left the ground. Becka tried to stop and twisted, her feet sliding out from under her. She grabbed Lacey's arm. It forced the older girl to loosen her grip, the muddy fabric slipped out of her fingers as she was pulled to the ground with her sister. But it wasn't soon enough to prevent the prank.

Alex landed on his feet, but slid, falling on his back with a thump, his black boxers showing to everyone. He groaned.
Several of the girls giggled, but most of the ones gasped.
The girl who he had praised earlier ran over, grabbing his shorts and throwing them on him, trying to help him. "Stop giggling!" She yelled.
Alex sat up, embarrassed, and stood, slipping his shorts on and backing off the court.
Lacey was laughing so hard she was almost blue in the face.

Becka was reduced to screaming like a child that didn't get her way, shouting at Lacey who was laughing right beside her. Pushing herself up from the mud the fact that Lacey wasn't listening to a word she said made her shout all the louder. She wasn't surprised to see Alex getting as far away as possible, wouldn't be surprised to see him leave, wouldn't be surprised when seeing him every single day at work and school became a nightmare. It gave her more to yell about, until both Davis girls were completely out of breath. "If you can't beat us fair and square it's a forfeit!" Becka challenged still gasping for air.

Alex sat on the bleachers, wiping his hand across his face, smearing mud across it. He was shaking, but was watching Becka. When she mentioned a forfeit, he stood, taking a deep breath, remembering why he came in the first place. Slowly, he walked over, touching her shoulder. "Becka..no forfeits.."
Most of the girls stopped giggling, amazed that he came back.
The girl who gave him his shorts walked up on her other side. "We can beat them, they're all prissies."

Becka turned towards him in surprise, hardly believing he was still here. She had never expected to be so glad to see Alex Vine. She looked back and forth between the two of them, a grin surfacing from somewhere beneath all the anger 'I have the best friends in the world'. She wrapped the girl in a tight hug. She wanted to throw her arms out and hug him too, but he was still Alex Vine, he was being friendly at the moment, but she didn't want to push it. The Davis's had already inflicted enough on him today. She looked down at Lacey "Get up already Beasty, it's time to play." She walked towards the corner she was last positioned at talking loud enough for everyone to hear "Hey Lacey, I know the prank is supposed to go that you just flinch and he never spikes again...but, I don't think that's going to work on Alex." There, now he knows what to expect from her. He cannot be afraid to jump if we are going to win.

Alex smiled faintly but as he returned to his spot, he bit his lip. Glancing at Becka as she spoke loudly, his grin returned. He looked at Lacey, his eyes daggers. You wanna play..let's play.. He challenged mentally. He nodded at the ball. "Anyone gonna pick it up?!" he said loudly to Lacey's team. It was still submerged in the mud. "Let's play!"

Lacey stood, surprised Alex was back, so surprised, she stepped away from the net slightly. When Becka revealed her plans, she looked over and glared. 'You're in for it.' she mouthed before turning back to Alex, returning his glare. "Stay out of this, sibling rivalry, you're not involved." She whispered.

Alex shook his head, smiling. "You pulled me into it. Your call." He said, watching the ball as it was served, over in Becka's direction.

Lacey huffed, but turned her attention to the game at the same time as Alex.

Becka took a few quick steps backwards to get under the ball and set it to Alex in the middle of the court. Alex, you better be as gutsy as you claim to be. She thought watching the ball and Lacey in the corner of her eye.

Alex hesitated as the ball came his direction, but he jumped, spiking it down, waiting for the laughter.
It didn't come. Lacey dived to hit the ball, but missed as it hit the mud a second time.
Alex beamed. "Yes!!" He laughed, more of a nervous energy relief.

Becka's laughter was delayed, it was more of a cackle and directed at Lacey who grabbed the ball firing it under the net at her. She deflected it into the mud, stooped to pick it up and passed it across the court to her talented server. "Do it again!" She was no longer in a rush to see them loose the point and set Lacey's team to rotating. The lingering threat of the prank had been defused. Lacey, who intimidated everyone else, was having no visible effect on Alex.
Her third serve cleared the net just as easily as the first two and was returned viciously, starting a volley that Lacey's team kept well out of Becka's reach, but the girls in back sent it forward to Alex.

Alex laughed, nodding and repeating his movements. He was smiling brightly, no longer afraid of Lacey. She's just the husk of a beetle now..seemingly so strong before, until you show defense. Then..it breaks. He thought to himself, smiling as he hit the ball hard, sending it back over the net and into the mud. He laughed, looking back at Becka. 'Losing their game!' he mouthed, laughing again and smiling at the other girls.
The one who showed off smiled back, no longer a giggling mess when he looked at her.
The others still blushed and giggled.
Alex turned back around as the ball was in the air again. He was ready to win this.

As the ball crossed the net Lacey called a play the back row responded simply bumping the ball over the net. When it returned the center back set Lacey up for a spike, Lacey leapt into the air, arm swinging but she didn't touch it. At the last moment the girl beside her jumped up spiking the ball over the net in the opposite direction.

Alex cheered. "Woo! Yeah! We've got this!" He smiled, clapping. "Great job!" He glanced at Becka to see the scores.
The ball had hit the mud, again. Lacey was infuriated.

The score was seven to four, but not very long. They racked up several more points before Lacey's team started acting like the varsity team they were and catching up. When it came around to her turn Becka only got to serve once before they reclaimed the serve with an excellently placed spike along the side boundary. Highly motivated, Lacey's team won the next four points in a row, tying the game at 14. The next serve came to the back corner and Becka sent it forward to the net, the spike was successful, finally making its way down into the mud on the other side. "Time to get us two more points and win the game." She grinned at Alex passing him the ball as she moved out of his way from the serving position to the net.

Alex nodded, smiling back. They where so close to winning! He threw the ball up, hitting it over the net as a serve.
Lacey hit it up, setting a spike for one of the other girls.
The girl jumped, hitting it hard.
Alex dived, barely able to keep it in the air and he gasped, felling his arm bed a little painfully, but hoped someone would spike the ball. COME ON!!! He screamed in his head.

Becka was right in front of him and took the shot, sending the ball hurling into the mud right beside the girl who had just spiked it moments before but was not ready to return another hit so soon. "Game point!" she called, their teammates twittering with excitement. Grabbing the ball from under the net Bekca turned tossing it back to Alex, a huge smile on her mud stained face.

Alex caught it with one hand, rolling his other shoulder a little to make sure he hadn't hurt it too bad when he fell. He figured it was probably a stretched muscle. He smiled back at Becka. "Let's do this." he chuckled, serving the ball again and watching as Lacey's team hit it back towards their team. One of the other girls hit it towards Becka.

Becka spiked the ball over the net and across the court at such an extreme angle it landed at Lacey's feet without ever giving her a chance of touching it. "It's raining, and pouring" she started the annoying volleyball cheer the varsity team used for Lacey, Becka friends joined in the last line "this Davis girl is scoring!" Before they erupted into laughter and cheers over their win.

Alex cheered Becka on, laughing until his face turned red. He calmed down and chuckled. "Nice Becka!" He hugged her before he realized what he was doing. He let go immediately. "Great job!" He high fived the team, making the hug look like part of a routine.

Becka was surprised by the momentary hug, the mud hiding any color that may have come to her cheeks. She had thought of doing the same thing earlier after all, it wasn't a big deal, she refused to appear flustered and went on laughing and celebrating.

One of the girls from Lacey's team came over to Alex "Hey, don't forget stretch really well, your shoulders and arms aren't used to hitting volleyballs like the rest of us." She had noticed him rolling his shoulder before the last serve, which was something they learned to look for in opponents, a weakness to exploit. But this was just for fun, they didn't want anyone hurt.

"Don't get too cocky Davis. It is still best 2/3" Lacey called to her sister, ducking under the net and leading the way to the Gatorade cooler they had brought from home. She pulled a paper cup from the stack and started into a casual conversation, before long all the girls were sprawled out on the bleachers and the wet grass chitchatting , quiet comments still mostly revolving around Alex.
