Alex nodded at the girl, stretching his arm and doing as he was told, feeling his muscles relax a little as he stretched. He sighed in relief, smiling at Becka's cheeriness. What are you doing..stop. He looked away, looking over at Lacey as she spoke. He scoffed. "No worries, the first game's always a sign to the rest!" he said to her, chuckling and joining his team in the cheering. It made him smile. When they where all calmed down, he sat near Becka a little up the bleachers a little, but staying quiet, not really drawing any more attention to himself.

Becka talked about the weekend, big assignments, work and not Alex. She kept half an eye on Lacey, quietly conspiring with her team before they got up heading to the court. "Come along Becka." she called condescendingly. "Going to teach me a lesson eh? Shall we?" Becka asked those around her lightly, but it was a fake smile she wore as they walked back to the mud.

Alex stood, jumping down the bleachers and walking up behind the team as everyone took their places. "Let's get this started, we have a game to win!" he cheered.

The second game followed in the footsteps of the first just as Alex had predicted. Neither team pulling more than a few points ahead before the other made a comeback. Lacey's team overall was trying to play smart, they were tired, their strategy to keep plays as short as possible. Their spikes were wicked. When the first spike came across the net directly into a players arms Becka thought it was a mistake. She was wrong. The force was so great the ball ricocheted off the waiting arms and out of bounds before she had time to redirect it. The next spike was to the same girl, she aimed before it hit, but as the varsity predicted, she over corrected and the ball flew directly into the net, irrecoverable. Becka groaned, this wasn't getting easier. "It's ok, just try and keep it in play. Everybody be ready to help recover after spikes."

Alex nodded, feeling his stomach flip. He wasn't sure if they'd win this, though he knew they could. "Come on girls...we can do it." he turned his back to Lacey's team for a moment. "Work together, and we can be better than them." he flashed a smile, trying to raise the girls' spirits, and a few seemed to get a little more pumped, but Alex was tired, and he could tell the others where as well. He turned, ready. "Let's do this." And the ball started back over the net towards the back of the court.

The ball was hit forward for a set and another spike from Becka. She was running low on energy and it was getting harder for the sort girl to reach all the way above the net, her shot barely made it over but even with a dive her opponent did not recover it. Finally it was their turn to serve again. "One down, four points to go." She called, licking her lips, and grimaced at the taste of mud.

Alex nodded. He glanced at Becka and sighed, taking the ball and tossed it up after stepping back a little, hitting it hard. He was used to this sort of energy draining activity. He looked around. "come on team, we can wipe their faces clean, then we'll celebrate, on me!" he hoped to boost all of their morale.

That got everyone's attention. For a moment Becka was afraid his promise was going to be little more than a distraction, but instead the volleyball became the most eye-catching, sought after thing imaginable. She was the one distracted by their enthusiasm.
Lacey's team wasn't giving up that easily. The ball was set and while one girl hopped into the air faking a spike Lacey jumped up beside her sending the ball across the net the other way, towards Becka. She dove making contact with the ball but it rose up and passed just under the net where none of her teammates could help it over. "Head in the game Becka." she told herself.

Alex was glad his offer encouraged most of the team, but he glanced at Becka with a slightly worried slightly questioning expression, of course..before the ball was served, in which someone set up a spike, just barely I might add, and he spike it down, narrowly missing the slow, tired outstreched fingers of Lacy Davis. He smiled. "Two points, three more to go." he said.

With added motivation the serve was wonderful. The return came with another targeted spike from Lacey. Becka scrambled backwards to get her head out of the way trying to put her arms under the ball instead, it flew into the air as she fell back into the mud "Help it! Help it!" If they made this point they would be tied at 15.

Alex turned at the 'help it' call from Becka. He was about to reach for it when it was spiked by another girl, sending it straight past Lacey's team into the mud. The team cheered. Alex walked over to Becka, extending a hand to help her up, a small smile on his face. "Nice save."

"Thanks." She used his strength to help lift herself out of the mud. "She hasnt killed me yet. Only two to go, its now or never." She tasted mud on her lips again. They were so close. The next serve barely cleared the net and the varsity team was ready.

Alex nodded. "I won't let her kill ya..I promise." he smiled a little and pat her shoulder with a sigh before returning to his spot. "Let's get this over with." he muttered to himself, watching as the ball was sent back over.

The girls were all in the game now, passing and diving like their futures depended on it. But it seemed impossible to get the ball over the net as Lacey's team deflected the ball in midair time and again. But finally a set went to Alex. Oh Please! Please sink it! Becka implored.

Alex jumped, hitting the perfect set hard, sending the ball straight into the mud. "Yes!" he cheered, landing on his feet..well, he did, but they slid forwards and he ended up on his back. He was laughing so hard his face was red under the mud, the team was excited, and the look of anger and disappointment was clear on Lacey's face.

Becka jumped as the ball touched down, shouting "HA!" right at her sister. She turned to Alex laying in the mud and cracked up. "Come on, were not done yet!" Becka exclaimed trying not to get more caught up in his contagious laughter than she already was. She stood in front of him hands outstretched to help him up as he had done for her.

Alex took her hands, but used most of his own strength to lift himself from the mud. He didn't want to pull her over as well. He reagained control, finally able to stop laughing. He wiped tears from his face, streaking mud all over his face in the process. "But we will be soon!" He cheered, excited. Becka's entire team seemed to have renewed vigor and excitement. He happily glared Lacey down, mouthing 'good luck.'
Lacey just sneered.

Game point, the serve was nearly perfect. Lacey's team hit it once from back to front, and then bumped it high into the air right at the edge of the net. Players from either team would be able to reach it once it descended. The game hinged on who would spike first.

Alex stepped forwards, but one of the other girls was in position first. She jumped at the exact moment as Lacey..who would get the spike first?
The ball was hit hard, burying itself into the mud.
Alex cheered, hugging the girl as she hit the ground.
The girl blushed madly, but gently hugged him back.
"Yes!!!" Alex cheered, jumping around, so caught up in the game he didn't notice the snickering football team in the bleacher's shadows.
Lacey looked horrified.

Becka held her breath as she watched the final score and released it in a triumphant scream completely focused on her sister "Yes! One for me Lacey!" She held her arms out wide and wore a smile that said "Take your best shot!"
