The Wolf Pack

Galenia hummed. "Indeed..."
"A shadow wolf." Mia clarified. "He overtook Tate's body temporarily to communicate with us. Left the poor pup quite drained."
The golden wolf raised an eyebrow at this. "That's...certainly uncommon." She turned to Tate. "When did you find out about this?"

" Just today... " Tate mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked to August, who was following the conversation with her eyes. " I mean, even before I felt like I couldn't clear my head, but these chaotic thoughts took on a more physical form. The shadow wolf... He said he was a part of me. My power. He was stronger than me though... "

Galenia nodded, thinking. "It's hard to learn to control..." She looked up. "First, we'll start off with mind-clearing exercises. Teach you to control your thoughts, so you have some level of strength to fight back when he tries to take over. In time, you'd learn how to communicate with him. Once you know how to clear your mind and become calm, we can work on having you blend with your power, so to speak, so that instead of having two completely separate beings, you'd both work together. You would still be Tate, but you'd be able to access the power your shadow wolf grants you as opposed to having him take over to access that power."
Mia nodded. "Although, despite all this, there is still a chance of there being times when he'll take over regardless; particularly when you're weak or overwhelmed with anger. They feed off of that sort of negative energy, from what I remember."

Galenia's words filled the adolescent wolf with courage and he smiled weakly, taking in the advice and information freely offered by the two wolves. And although the wolf didn't want to seem doubtful of the intelligent she wolves' words, he frowned slightly. " So you're saying I should try to harness both the shadow wolf's power and my own so that we're not so seperate after all? " The wolf puzzled over this, "But this other half of me seems uncooperative. Like he wants to control me. "

Galenia nodded. "He would do. But that's why you need to learn to control it."
"The mind clearing exercises will help you to repress his attempts to take over your body a little more. Once you're able to establish communication, it'll be easier to slide into the next phase and harness his power to your own." Mia explained gently. "I'm sure, once he hears of these and once you're able to communicate, he'll be more willing; it's likely a lack of communication that caused him to take over in the first place."

Tate nodded, feeling reassured by Mia's certainty on the situation. He smiled, giving August a thumbs-up when she tilted her head in a questioning gesture. " We can start training tomorrow, I guess. "

Mia smiled. "For now, get some rest."
Caleb nodded, and nudged his sister lovingly. "Good seeing you again, August." He looked around at his siblings. "Esme and Tate, too." With that, he excused himself, pausing on his way to turn to Esme. "I believe Crescent wanted to see you." he said, a teasing twinkle in his eyes and a light smirk on his face.

Esme felt her face flush an intense pink at Caleb's teasing smile, but she tried bashfully to hide it.
"I'd better go see Crescent, then," she said, pressing close to August and then Tate affectionately. "Look after yourselves. I'll see you soon." She signed a loving goodbye to her sister before turning and padding out of the den, her eyes immediately darting left and right for any sign of the beautiful and elusive she-wolf.

August signed back, smiling first at Caleb, and then her sister. Tate nodded at Caleb and brushed his shoulder affectionately past Esme as she left the den in search of Crescent. Those two certainly are close.

Mephistopheles sighed, getting to his feet and padding out of his den. After much consideration and thought, he decided it was time to visit his old friend Cain's pack to see how he was prospering. Perhaps his pack was having trouble reaching the soul quota too? It could simply just be a case of lack of mortal wolves in the forests these days... He shook head, walking past the two surly demons who guarded the entrance of his tribe, humming a tune.

Caleb chuckled. "Amusingly so. Anyway, best be off. Good luck, you two." He nodded, and departed the den.
Crescent stood on a rock nearby, her eyes scanning the pack for Esme or any places where Esme could be. In the light of the moon and starts, her white fur seemed to sparkle with some otherworldly aura.

Sylvia stood, unsure of where exactly she was to be placed. She'd explained her talents in magic, both healing and destructive, and was awaiting her den allocation and other decisions the leader may want to make regarding her.

Since Mephistopheles' and Cain's packs were so close together, it didn't take the demon long to reach his friend's pack. When they were younger, they had both decided to settle their tribes and camps close so that they were never far away from each other, and although the two wolves' packs were close, somewhere along the lines the two pack leaders had gradually drifted apart, Meph getting caught up with the stress of running a pack, and Caine making other close friends. They weren't hopeful and naive pups anymore, and they both had their own packs to run. The idea depressed Meph more than he'd originally anticipated.
Smoothing back curled red hair and straightening his wings, he padded close to the camp, his own nervousness practically creating a physical manifestation.

Cain dipped his head slightly, still large and imposing despite the small, respectful gesture.
"We have a few spare dens around the pack," he said, his voice level and his eyes watchful. In his peripherals, he glimpsed the familiar flash of red fur that signalled Mephistopheles, a close childhood friend and Alpha of Idemoni's sister pack, had come to speak with him. His gaze had barely wavered from Sylvia's own, but it was clear he was thinking in the gentle pause between his sentences.
"Bela will show you around all of our spare shelters," he said after a moment. "I would love to do so myself, but it seems I have important company." His eyes flashed over to Meph and back, showing who he meant.

Bela grinned - her smile was not soft and sure like her brother's, but wild and untamed and unsettling. Her golden fur flamed in the light of the sinking sun and her eyes seemed to fuel it, burning like hot coals. She stepped away from Cain to give him and Mephistopheles some space.
"You can get settled in, then it'll be time for the New Moon," she said, her predatory beam never leaving her face, simply twisting garishly as she spoke. "That'll be a good way for you to meet the rest of us, and we can determine how you'll fit in." She began to pad behind the Alpha Rock, where natural dens littered the grounds - some in obvious use, a few shadowy and unoccupied. "Got any talents? Healing, hunting, fighting?"

Mephistopheles smiled, nodding at Sylvia as she passed. " Hey Cain. S'been a while. " He turned to his surroundings, for the first time noticing how organised and strangely... Sinister the air of the pack seemed. Eyes flickering over the rocks, he caught sight of Bela, talking with a wild adrenaline-fueled grin to Sylvia. The air smelt of blood, and excitement, and the horned demon frowned, realising the hunters of the tribe must have been hauling in their prey recently.
He hovered near the rocks, not sure whether to pad up to Cain and clap him on the back and ask how the sly devil had been, or stay silent. He flinched, hating the fact that they'd drifted so apart, a twinge of guilt in his gut for not visiting sooner.
" How's life? "

Cain's features seemed to warm as he looked at Mephistopheles, glad to see his childhood friend once more. They'd both been busy with their respective packs, and the Alpha had been meaning to visit for weeks now.
"Busy," he said. "As I'm guessing you have been, too. We haven't spoken in much too long. How is your pack?"

Mephistopheles stared at his paws, suddenly finding the ground interesting.
" Well... It's.. Er, a challenge sometimes. Astaroth payed a visit, and reminded me I was pack leader and lectured me about responsibility... Which was nice of her, sure, but she also came to inform me that my pack's struggling with certain things. I mean, we're hardly reaching our soul quota every week and..." The winged demon trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck as he cast amber eyes downwards. " It's been tough, I guess. What about you?" A small part of Meph hoped Cain's pack had been struggling with things too, so that the two could be united over their troubles. But deep down, Meph knew Cain was born to be a leader, and he knew the pack was just fine.

"I'm an all-rounder, I suppose." she said, turning her attention from the two leaders to the much wilder demon beside her. "I specialise most in hunting and fighting, through normal or magic methods, but I do have some knowledge in the arts of healing." She liked the look of Bela; although she wouldn't deny the adrenaline-fueled grin on the she-wolf's face unsettled her a little, she recognised enthusiasm when she saw it. She seemed like a passionate wolf, a spark which Sylvia greatly respected and knew not to mess with. She certainly liked the idea of celebrating the New Moon; it was a tradition she'd merely heard of, having not practiced it for so long that her memory of it was foggy. It would be a pleasant change to settle with wolves of her own kind.

Crescent looked down from the rock, smiling as she spotted Esme. She leapt down from the rock, her body seeming to spill down onto the floor as the moonlight glinted off her fur. She padded over to her happily, chiming a cheerful "Hello!" to her close friend.

"Idemoni hasn't had any soul quota issues lately," Cain said, keeping his regal, Alpha-like tone but trying not to rub his victory in. "But everyone has those times, Meph. You'll get through it."
Bela's disconcerting grin seemed to widen as she thought of the New Moon.
"You'll fit right in," she assured Sylvia, her red eyes flashing. "All you have to do here is let go - we're Demons, nothing more. Easy for me to do, of course, because I've never left this pack, but Cain spent some time in a mortal pack when he was growing up. He learned emotion, and morals, and things Demons shouldn't care for, so it was harder for him to let go." She paused, her eyes catching the new female's in a way that showed her friendly nature, but warned of something much darker hidden beneath. "Have you ever lived among the mortals?"

Esme blushed a little, but hid it with a deft tilt of her head.
"Hey!" she said, eyes sparkling.

" Yeah, I guess. It's been hard since Apollyon... Left. And Beezlbub is just as incompetent as ever, so you know. " Meph let out a small chuckle, although his expression was thoughtful. A small grin settled on his face, and he nudged his childhood friend. " You settled down with a pretty demon girl yet? Or are you still lacking love when it comes to the female department? " The comment was thrown with the intention of teasing the leader slightly, although Meph could see Cain wasn't flustered.

Sylvia nodded. "I was adopted into a mortal pack and taught their ways until they discovered I was a demon. Then I left to meet wolves of my own kind- sadly, that pack was corrupt, and met an unfortunate demise a little while after my departure. I rested in another mortal pack for a while before making the journey here." She caught the she-wolf's eye and shook her head. "I only grew attached to two wolves in my puphood, one almost cunning and ruthless enough to be considered a demon himself upon first glance. I never really grew attached to any mortals, however."
Crescent's bright blue eyes sparkled with excitement.
"The lights will show up soon! I came to take you up to the mountain like I promised that I would. Are you ready?"

Meph's friendly teasing warmed Cain further, and his face seemed to relax into a proper smile, one that was genuine and not simply a part of his elaborate demeanour.
"I'm still on my own, for the time being," he said, his wine-red eyes watching Meph. "Though I've got my sister and my pack - you must have seen our new addition with Bela earlier, too. I'm happy for now."

Bela turned her head so she was facing forward again, hiding the way her smile darkened, looking more like a pleased snarl.
"All that interaction must have left a mark," she said conversationally, leading Sylvia to the spare dens. "It certainly did on Cain." Her voice quietened then, speaking to herself, a laugh threatening to spill into her words. "A few New Moons will rip all that right out of you."

(I was going to write Esme too but I have dinner now, so will finish off when I get back!)
