The Tower of Demise

One by one, they were plucked off the ground and away from where they wanted to be the most. Friends, lovers, and family disappeared before their eyes, and Harper yelled out in frustration as the image of his sister blurred and then vanished completely. Yes, it had all been a terrible, terrible illusion, but right now, there was no place he would rather be. The boy was deaf to everyone else's cries, and the only thing he could think of was how good it had felt to be home again, to see his sister happy, and to pull his parents into a warm embrace. "Let go," he whispered brokenly, but Mica kept him under the crook of his crystallized arm and no amount of squirming would loosen the golem's grip. "Just... just let me stay." Tears welled up in the corner of Harper's eyes as a heavy sadness swept over him. Like several of his friends, he had never felt so lost.

2889r28.jpg

"I SAID LET GO OF US!" Riley screamed angrily. "LET GO OF US OR WE'LL GIVE YOU HELL!" It was a bunch of empty threats, but seeing her friends so broken scared her. What was the golem planning to do with them anyway? It couldn't end like this, not when they were so close to home. She thought about her parent's worried voices and Kim's chirpy new year greeting, maybe she would never see them again.

Riley's amulet lit up and her pyromancy glove began to glow a deep red.

Mica didn't feel a thing and Riley watched with wide eyes as Howl scooped Inadi and C off the ground.

That was their entire team. "Guys," she called out desperately. "We can't give up... we can't give up now!" It didn't look like they were listening. The dazed eyes, the tears, it seemed as if everyone was trapped in their own little worlds.

suGBCks.png

C could only cry when she was tucked beneath the golem's arm. She had finally gone home only to be torn away from it a minute after. It wasn't fair, it wasn't fair in the slightest. Tears streamed down her cheeks as the golem's shuffled into the tiny lift. C finally remembered why she had boarded the midnight train, but she also understood that her wish wouldn't ever come true. When people died, they didn't come back. The hooded figure couldn't understand a lot of things anymore, but she still understood that. It was the way the world worked after all.

Knowing that what awaited her on earth was loss, home didn't sound so appealing anymore.

The speakers crackled to life.

"Howl, Mica, do remember to be careful, please." There was a slight pause. "Be as gentle as you can be."

Many of the humans remained lost in their own little worlds, but those who weren't suffering from withdrawal exchanged confused glances. The elevator continued its ascent for what felt like ages until they finally reached the topmost floor. The double doors slid open and clumsily, Mica and Howl maneuvered their way out of the cramped elevator.

They found themselves in a room not too different from the ones they had been in. It had the same checkered tiles beneath their feet, and it was filled to the brim with all sorts of clocks, each revealing a different time. In the center of the room was a pedestal, and on it was the last working clock in all of Nowhere. The clockwork soldier stood before it with their backs to them, but as soon as he heard the elevator's soft ping, he spun around and gave them all a kind smile.

pNEls2Y.png

"Thank you, Howl, Mica. Now please, put our guests down."

The golems did as instructed, and clumsily, the humans were dropped onto the checkered floor.

The several thuds made the clockwork soldier wince, and he gave the humans a moment to recover before he strode towards them hesitantly. "We're so sorry about the rough treatment, but we couldn't have you turning to stone, and Howl and Mica don't know their own strength." He loved the golems dearly, clumsiness and all. "I apologize, but I must ask you to leave and never come back... this tower is a dangerous place, but most importantly, you are upsetting the balance." He quieted down for a moment to allow his request to sink in. Howl and Mica trudged back to the clockwork soldier's side. "In the grand scheme of things we all play a role, and you must understand that my role is to guard this tower forever. I cannot allow any of you to stay."

[BCOLOR=transparent]Spooky Tower[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Her punches were practically taps. It did nothing to the rock monster grabbing her. The electric sparks nor the lightning appeared as she struck down. The redhead lacked her resolve. She was so focused on trying to repress the bad memories- maybe even forget them completely if she could. The sounds of her friends had been drowned out by her thoughts, her memories. Most of those memories had been the ones she chose to forget too. "Why now...Why now..." Ace tugged at her hair and shut her eyes as tight as possible. "Just forget. Just forget." Even her shaky chanting brought little change. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]She could brush past a few memories like her near death experience or the time Boss showed her just how angry he could get. The thought alone made her shudder. However there was one memory that kept haunting her no matter how she forced it away. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Them.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Two faces that haunted Ace's memories. She remembered a woman with red hair much like her own and a man with a sympathetic smile. He always had that sad and sympathetic smile when he looked at Ace. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"You really want to just leave her here? It may rain you know. And she is like three."[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Yeah, well. She'll stay close to the door. I've already made my choice. Some other family will want her."[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Maybe. Orphanages aren't all the rage you know."
[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]They left her there all by herself. The worst part was that they didn't even care. They didn't even wait for someone to help her. This couldn't be happening again. No it couldn't. "It never happened. It never happened." [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"We can't give up...We can't give up now!"[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]...Riley? Ace blinked and opened her eyes slowly. That's right….They had a mission to take care of. They were in that weird tower. Ace wasn't reliving a nightmare. She was in the tower with her friends. Unfortunately, her snap back into reality was far too late. They were all captured by the rock monsters. They were all being taken somewhere. No matter how hard Ace tried, she wasn't getting out of its grip either. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Where are you taking us?" Ace's voice was soft at first. Then with a deep breath, she yelled out her question again, demanding to be let go. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Now please put our guests down?"[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Wait wha-" Ace was dropped and she landed unceremoniously on her stomach. She groaned and picked herself up. She didn't know anyone else lived in the tower. Ace was almost sure that the tower consisted of monsters and random doors. Unless they mentioned something about that earlier- in which of course Ace didn't pay attention.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"We're not leaving." Ace's arms crossed over her chest. Her resolve was still gone, but she was still determined to finish what she started. Ace was avid on getting that item and getting out- just as she said they would.. She had just about enough of the dumb tower and its cruel games. "Not until we get what we came for. It's our way back to our own home. Just take it back when we're done with it." She tried keeping her focus on the problem at hand, on reality, (if one could consider this reality) but her mind continued to wander to those images of her Boss telling her to come home with her and then being abandoned to be tossed into someone else's care. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Glancing at the others, she realized they didn't look much better. Maybe they all went through some personal hell when she did. It wasn't like Ace paid much attention. Though, seeing them so defeated reminded her just how much they needed to get back home. It reminded her just how much effort she put into keeping everyone's spirits up. "This is our last item. Our last key to freedom guys...We can do this." It wasn't as encouraging as she normally would have done, but it was better than the sad silence still residing with the group. It was better than nothing. [/BCOLOR]

Archive of Wishes --> Top Floor (Tower of Demise)

"Harper, C ... Don't listen. Don't ..."

Ran felt like a hypocrite, because he was fairly certain that he would have bolted straight for the door in front of him, if his limbs weren't so weighted down. He attempted to wiggle his fingers, but they remained inert. A blackish sheen coated the stiff fingers, reminding him horribly of necrotizing fasciitis. He screwed his eyes shut, hoping against hope that this wasn't a sign that he was far too gone to be saved. They were so close!

"Ran, please come back."

Please come back, the words tugged at his heart and Ran felt bitter tears begining to build up in his eyes. It hurt so badly, but he didn't know why. Everything was a warm, black hazy blur in his mind. He took a deep breath, feeling the frustration welling up inside of him, as he fought hard to recall even the smallest detail. This woman with a blurred out face had to be someone precious, because he almost whispered "I love you" the first time he heard her voice reaching out to him from behind the door.

"Ran, I'm sorry. Please come back."

"I - I can't." He admitted, allowing himself to slump back defeated. He relaxed a little, and gradually, some of the fog lifted. He was back to the day before New Year's Eve. He was in bed with her. Just two of them, him and Mazu. Her lips moved soundlessly, but he remembered feeling angry. Much angrier than he had in years. That must be when he had stormed out of the bedroom, not caring that he was stark naked. "Why was I mad?"

"Why?" She echoed.

Her voice faded away, only to be replaced by an older woman's. The hacking smoker's cough punctuated every word she spoke. Ran frowned, but he couldn't recall enough Japanese at the moment to fully understand what she said.

"I'm sorry." She said repeatedly. "I'm sorry."

Anger and hurt continued roiling inside his chest, but the anger was much more intense than the almost jaded feeling he had upon hearing Mazu's voice. He took a deep breath, trying to restrain himself from yelling at his former mentor and calling her a coward. She knew she hadn't had that much time left, but she was too scared to let him see her dying. It was so, so stupid. Tears slid down his cheek and Ran's eyes snapped open. Lies, these were only hollow lies that preyed on his deepest desires.

"You don't have to apologize," he yelled to them, feeling totally stupid. "Both of you are stubborn to the point of being stupid, but ..."

As the words faded away, he felt bone-achingly tired. He closed his eyes again, focusing on how both of them sounded. They were always so frustrating, but he loved them for it. It was simply who they are.

He felt fingers curl round his mid-section and both his eyes flew open. He yelled in fright as a faceless crystal being hoisted him effortlessly, despite the additional weight coming from his half-transformed limbs. He moved his mouth soundlessly, but words continued to fail him. He could only watch as Harper and C were swept up like tiny paper dolls into the golems hands.

"Harper, C? Are you two okay?" He asked wearily, as they waited for the second golem to come over bearing the rest of their disoriented party. Ran felt his heart sink into the pit of his stomach, but he kept smiling anyway. He didn't want Harper and C to worry about the possible doom that loomed over their heads. He reached out and ruffled Harper's hair in a fatherly manner before reached down and lacing his stiff fingers between C's shivering ones. "Don't worry, we'll be fine." He whispered.

"I'll think of something." Ran hoped his words could reassure the two sobbing teens beside him, even though their time was clearly running out. He felt incredibly guilty that he couldn't do much otherwise. Perhaps Harper was right...? He certainly hadn't lived up to anyone's expectations of what an adult should be. He took a deep breath and vowed secretly that he'd try his best to step up from here on. This was the last stretch and he'd do his best to make sure the rest of the Lost Souls boarded the train safely.

He heard an all too familiar ding, before the lift doors began sliding open. Almost desperately, he whispered to them. "You'll get home. I promise."

"This is our last item. Our last key to freedom guys...We can do this."

Ran could see the two golems standing protectively over the strange soldier. He wanted to believe Ace, but he doubted they could win a fight against those two monsters. Their only hope was to try and reason things out. This was definitely time to put his rusty negotiating skills to the test. Giving C's hand one last squeeze, Ran staggered to his feet and made his way slowly to the front.

"You seem like a reasonable fellow, but we hope you'd hear us out before asking us to leave again." Ran stepped forward again, so that he ended up between the Lost Souls and the Clockwork Soldier. He focused on looking the soldier in the eye, shunting away the growing anxiety in his chest at the sight of the two menacing creatures standing either side of the stern faced Nobody. "We only want to borrow the Last Clock. Once we board the train, we'd have the dragon riders return it to you."

NOE_V2.jpeg

Noe nodded, despite keeping her eyes trained on the floor. Cobalt pushed to his feet and bared his teeth at the golems. "Mister, you have our word that we'll do our best to return the clock." She swallowed hard then forcing herself to be a lot louder than usual. "The hoomans don't belong here ... maybe that's what's upsetting the balance in Nowhere."

Ran glanced at Noe appreciatively then turned back to the soldier. "We only wish to get home and leave your world in peace. Nowhere and the people here mean as much to us as our family and friends back home." He was so tempted to retreat, when he saw Howl fidget, but he decided to remain there. Running away would only place them at a disadvantage in this precarious situation. "Please, there has to be some way to make this work."

Howl and Mica glanced at each other then turned to look at their boss. Frankly, neither of them understood what the hoomans wanted nor did they really care. What mattered to them was the fact that their boss was upset and they wanted to make him happy again. He was like their brother or maybe even their father.

pNEls2Y.png

2889r28.jpg

Seeing the man plead on behalf of his friends made the clockwork soldier frown deeply. Their story was a sad one and he wanted to help them, he really did, but it was his duty to guard the clock with his life. If it fell into the wrong hands, terrible things could happen. "I'm sorry, I really am, but I cannot hand you the last clock." The soldier's eyes flitted from the sobbing humans to the man before him. "I ask again, please leave. Howl and Mica will show you all to the door and ensure that no harm befalls you."

Riley stomped towards Ran, a scowl plastered onto her face. "After all we've been through, you think we'll leave just because... because you said please?" She threw out her arms in exasperation as embers flickered to life around her. They fought witches, dealt with turtledragons and more to get here, and the archive of wishes, it was the last straw. "We've been through hell and back and we're not leaving without that clock! We'll fight you if we have to, we will!" Riley's glove grew hotter as she pointed an accusatory finger at the clockwork soldier and his golems.

The sudden outburst made the clockwork soldier wince, but he stood his ground. "I'm sorry, but if you continue to make a fuss, I will have you thrown out." He looked to Mica and Howl, he didn't want to do this, but it was his job and making tough decisions was a part of it.

Noticing the signal, the golems began shuffling towards Ran and Riley. Ran pushed Riley back, as he tried to will his amulet to work. The same black layer formed round his finger tips again and started creeping up to his wrists. He urged his "rock flesh" to form faster, but it was too late! The taller golem was now standing in front of them.

"Riley, don't!"

A jet of flames flashed from the Riley's pointed finger and it hit Mica in the face. The golem thrashed about in wordless agony. As Mica stepped around erractically, his foot connected with Ran's side and the adult was sent hurtling into the wall on the far side of the octogonal room. The world went black momentarily, as Ran slid down the wall and lay on his back.

"Stop!" Noe yelled in horror, as Mica's flailing hand caught Riley in the stomach. The poor healer watched as more fire burst from the gloves. Mica retaliated by slamming his fisted hand on the ground, sending Riley flying into the air. She slammed onto the cold marble floor and didn't move anymore. "Nooooo!"

339jevs.png

"Ran! Riley!" As he got to his feet, Harper wiped away at tears with the back of his hand. Mica and Howl terrified him, but if they didn't do something, anything, they would lose their last chance at getting home. Slowly, his shaky hand reached for the hilt of his sword and his amulet shone just a little brighter. "Inadi, Leila, C," the boy pleaded in an attempt to snap them out of their own withdrawals. "We... we can do this." Like Ace, his encouragement ended up sounding anything but certain. Speaking of Ace, he locked eyes with the redhead. They'd fought side by side before, and knowing that she and the others had his back made him feel a little braver. After giving her a slight nod, he unsheathed his sword and began rushing towards the glass case that contained the last clock.

[BCOLOR=transparent]Ran decided to make a more reasonable approach, so Ace stepped back and placed her hands behind her back. She waited with the others, a blank expression on her face. Even Noe couldn't persuade the man in front of them. "Why must everyone make everything so difficult?" Ace muttered, now with her arms crossed. Just as she was about to step forward, RIley did so. And when she did, Riley outwardly expressed Ace's own frustrations. The clockwork soldier's threat made Ace step forward. With a shake of her head, she spoke up. "You're mistaken sir. We're taking that clock. We tried to be nice about it. We did say we planned to give it back."[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]But things always had to be done the difficult way. Riley and Ran had been knocked to the side. Looking at the remaining few of the group, she nodded. "Harper's right. We made it this far. We aren't turning back now." As Harper ran off to grab the clock, Ace motioned to the others. "We need to keep those three distracted for as long as it takes. Noe, make sure Ran and Riley are okay." She turned, looking at Colbat. With a pat on his head, Ace pointed to the golems. "You aim high. Blind them if you can." She saluted the dragon and then hurried over to help the others. Her gloved hands sparked again. This was now out of determination and frustration. Ace had been through way too much in the past few...however long they were in the tower, to back out now. If she could take out her anger on something, it was going to be those golems- and if she was lucky, she'd get to hit that clock person too. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Howl and Mica turned towards the scattering humans, prepared to grab them and keep them away from the clockwork soldier. That was their job so they planned to do it. However, seeing just how hard they hit two of the humans made them flinch and walk over to help them back up. The poor creatures didn't know their own strength sometimes. Both reached to help Ran and Riley back up, only to suddenly be electrocuted. The shock made them both reel backwards. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Stay away from them!" Ace planned to stomp on the ground once more to cause the impact to send another wave of electricity at the two golems. Before she could, Howl pushed her, trying to be as gentle as possible, but still managing to knock her back a good distance. Mica had its own humans to deal with. It tried grabbing Inadi and Leila, but they were slippery humans and Mica wasn't very fast. Not to mention the flying dragon shooting fireballs at them. Colbat managed to get one good hit in, causing Howl to stumble back and knock into Mica. Unfortunately, while Howl was scrambling to regain balance, it managed to knock the dragon into a wall. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Colbat! You okay buddy?" Ace ran over to help the dragon as he slowly stood up, shaking the rubble off his back. "Good soldier." She patted his head and then went back to help the others. They needed to keep the golems and the soldier busy.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]It was definitely easier said than done... [/BCOLOR]

Inadi's fight with the golems was very quick as he was scooped into the arms of one of the faceless cold rock creatures. As his mind went as limp as his body, deciding to just enjoy the ride for the time being, Inadi looked down at his necklace and noticed that even with his use from earlier the magic within the crystal seemed to be just a pinch lower from the top. It seemed odd considering he had been using the crystal's power for a while there during his frustration. Perhaps it only reacted to emotional extremes rather than his own actual usage. Granted these crystals might have been a bit different from the ones they had all received from the Queen what felt like ages ago. Doubtful that the Hooded Figures and the other Nobodies got the exact same ones.

The curiosity rattled around his head as he was dropped on his chest right next to the others in a thud after a soft voice instructed the golems to do so. Picking himself up on all fours, Inadi rubbed his chin as it did a soft bounce on the ground when he was plopped onto the hard marble beneath them. Looking up at the direction to voice sounded from was a small little soldier who was now silent listening to Ace talk for the group. Getting to one knee, Inadi looked up at the clock directly behind the golems and the little soldier with a wide eyed stare. That was the thing they needed if he wasn't mistaken, and Ace quickly pointed it out in her speech.

Inadi tried looking for a way to take the clock quietly, perhaps some kind of sneaking around that he could pull off with no one else looking with his magic but that was quickly put aside as Riley began showing her impatience with the whole situation and the solder's sudden warning of throwing the humans out on the street. Whispering to himself, Inadi hoped Riley would avoid any kind of quick attack or something to spark a problem but that was struck from the table as a quick jet of fire hit one of the golems in the face. Slamming the marble beneath him Inadi jumped to his feet as Riley quickly was thrown past him into the wall. "I suppose that concludes negotiations then!"

Trying to keep his feet moving Inadi kept avoiding the grips of the golems while keeping an eye on Ace, Harper and Leila. It seemed that the others were doing well enough when you added in the help of Cobalt attacking from above. When Howl began to stumble Inadi saw it as a chance to maybe add something to the fight. Throwing a hand out towards Howl's plant foot it was using to try and gain some semblance of balance Inadi sent a strong gust of wind to knock the creature onto the ground. The blow didn't knock the creature from its footing, but it did do something else. A small but noticeable layer of stone came flying off and Inadi looked at it quite puzzled. How old were these things? Stone usually didn't break down that easy, even with heavy gale winds like he had sent out. Riley's fire maybe knocked a few stones from their place but nothing substantial. Perhaps they could use that to their advantage.

Looking over to Harper and Ace, Inadi decided to start trying to do some coordinating. "Hey guys! These rock buddies seem pretty old from what I can tell. If we can get them to hit the floor or get some solid hits in on them we might just chisel them down to size," He yelled to them as he looked up at Cobalt who went back into flying. "See if you can heat up the rock a little bit more. Maybe the hotter the stone gets, the easier it will be to get rid of..." Inadi quickly was cut off from a flash of stone that knocked him to the ground. Mica must have not liked him talking about his brother as a weak link. More likely that the big thing was just looking to get rid of Inadi and the rest of the humans. Trying to gather his breath back on the marble floor Inadi didn't care which. He only hoped the others could buy him enough time to at least figure out where he was again.

Leila reacted little to being dropped a few inches onto the hard tiled ground, or to anything anyone said or did during that time, for that matter.
In her mind she was only confused. A minute ago she was home, with all the things she loved about it - or it was only just that she believed she was. She had memory of how all of it went wrong somewhere down the road - but her perception of the present was equally blurred and she disregarded that in favour of the overwhelming, terrible sense of longing that lingered.

"I ask again, please leave." The Clockwork Soldier.

Leila grunted, flipped over, sat up, and stared blankly at the wall behind the Soldier.

What was she doing there? Her head was still heavy. Two giant, moving statues and many, many clocks - the scene in front of her made no sense to her whatsoever. For all she knew she could be home - a safe, comfortable place much unlike where she was now.

Wobbly on her feet in her struggle to stand up, she tugged Riley's sleeve in half of an attempt to steady herself and half to get her attention - what the Clockwork Soldier was saying seemed to her quite reasonable.

"Yes," she said, still weary, "we should leav-"

And then Riley torched one of the golems.

The multitude of things shouted in the seconds that followed - Ran failing to stop Riley, Noe's terrified screams, and Harper calling their names - forcefully pushed Leila towards the direction of soberness.

"We... we can do this."

Do what?

Soberness did not imply a sudden mental grasp of the entire situation. The best guess Leila pieced together led her to pick up her bow and draw and arrow - but then something - an inexplicable sense of imminent danger - drove her to abandon that action to first get away from the place she was.

The amulet. Back then Leila used to have mixed feelings about them - about how she it didn't feel like it was her that was in control when the gem started glowing, how it seemed to force parts of her mind to command her body to do things according to decisions she didn't make. Now, however, it was only that she didn't have the will to make any decisions at all.

Rolling to the side, a golem hand swept above the ground across the place she was just a moment ago.

Bow drawn, she aimed it in one of the golems' direction , held it there for a few moments - and then she shook her hand, returned the string to its original position and put the arrow away.

The creatures were so obnoxiously named after minerals and she had a bow and arrow. "All armour has seams" was another story. These were made entirely of stone.

"I -"

It was only when Inadi tossed out the idea of heating up stone so that it would supposedly break more easily that Leila realized it wasn't entirely because of the amulet's magic that she was able to sense the golem coming near from behind earlier. The torched rock oozed of heat - burns-before-even-touching-it levels of heat.

Inadi, that is a questionable idea.

The smooth marble-tile floor made it easy for her to slide out of the way, hard to stop. Her fingertips picked up a layer of the half-dried, sticky liquid on the floor before she came to a stop and raised her head to see the golem recovering from the failed attempt to scoop her up into one of its giant hands.

Just for the sake of trying she released an arrow in the direction, and the golem turned her way with the arrow snapping and falling away.

Leila saw from the edge of her sight that Harper was making a run for the clock - at least both the guards were too occupied to sneak up on him. But still-

There was little she could do but jump again to the side as the heavy footsteps of the golem came her way. The golems seemed really like they were just trying to drive them away instead of causing any harm, but Leila only tried not to imagine what would happen to a person being squished between two slabs of heated stone.

"- I don't think I am going to be of much use here."

NOE_V2.jpeg

"No, no, this won't do. Howl, Mica ... stop!"

No one seemed to have heard him, because the rest of the hoomans joined the battle. The only one standing along the sidelines was Noe. It took her awhile to remember she could actually do something to help, which galvanized her into action. She dodged the first slam coming her way and jumped nimbly over the slow moving fist, weaving her way towards Riley. She was truly more concerned over the hooman girl who remained ever so still on the ground.

Noe's eyelashes fluttered, as she felt for a faint pulse along Riley's jugular. She relaxed a little, knowing that Riley still lived. Noe rolled Riley onto her back and laced her fingers between the hooman's limp ones. A gentle green aura travelled down Riley's hand from Noe's. Up and up it went until Riley appeared to glow.

"I - you're okay." Noe whispered gently. "Let's get you somewhere safe ..." The Nobody helped Riley to her feet, encouraging Rils to throw an arm over her shoulder. Cautiously, they hobbled towards where Ran sat with his back against the wall.

"Hey, Rils," Ran greeted through gritted teeth. "I see you getting a battle scar from this." His tiger eyes flitted to the growing bruise forming on her forehead. "Maybe you should take it easier soldier. Head injuries can be much worse on the inside."

Noe blushed a little. "I tried."

"I know you did," Ran said kindly, relishing the warmth washing through his body and dulling the intense pain along his back. He staggered to his feet, despite Noe's protest, and surveyed the battle scene. "Harper's going for the clock. We need to keep them distracted."

The clockwork soldier glowered, when he saw Inadi chipping Howl and Mica flailing around in a shoddy attempt to shield his smaller brother from more harm. This really wasn't right! It really wasn't, because someone could get hurt. The guardian of the Last Clock closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, they glowed a blinding white. "Time, time, reverse! Back, back, we go. Tick-tock."

All the events that had transpired zipped in anti-chronological order and hoomans and golems alike felt themselves shuffled like chess pieces at a dizzying pace, leaving them whoozy when they finally arrived back in their original position with Ran standing between the group and the soldier.

"Eh?" Ran blinked. His body ached a little, but it didn't feel like he had been slammed into the wall. Very strange and unnerving. "What happenened?" He asked dumbly.

Slowly, his mind began accepting the fact that whatever progress they had made was voided and any other attempt at direct confrontation would end up just as frustrating. He stymied his growing despair and came to the one logical conclusion. They had to act now before morale dipped further, which meant the clock was their first priority and not the golems.

"A time magi, a very powerful one." Noe whispered as if responding to Ran's "eh", as her eyes widened at the impossible task they had on hand. They could literally fight till they die and the enemy wouldn't suffer any permanent loss. "We have to outsmart him, so he can't keep casting his spells."

That was perhaps easier said then done. While the reversal had taken them back to a point earlier in time, the few hoomans who checked would realize that the mana they spent was gone for good. Noe, who had been looking at one of the amulets, swallowed hard, as a few hard truths began to sink in around the same time Ran came to a similar conclusion.

As Noe continued fretting, Ran made the decision to follow his instincts. He bent his knees slightly, making the two golems focus on him, as they believed Ran was about to attack their boss. Ran crouched even lower then leaped into action, running at a sharp forty five degree angle. The sudden switch caused the two golems to freeze, as they were prone to do whenever they needed to make split second decisions.

"Try not to die," she pleaded in a soft, rushing whisper only heard by those around her. Her syllables sped up, as she noticed Ran crouching lower almost like he was about to attack their enemies. "Time can't erase death... and avoid getting hurt. Once we leave, your injuries will come back. And - Ran!"

Noe's usually breathy voice rose shrilly, garnering Howl and Mica's attention long enough for Ran to get a better headstart. It was a totally unintentional on Noe's part. Then before anyone could ask her to shut up, she started freaking out at the same ear-piercing pitch, because Ran seemed to have lost his mind completely. For some unfanthomable reason (to her at least), he decided to pull a Harper and bolt for the clock without caring about the golems or the mage.

"Guys .... what do we do?" Noe asked desperately, as her fingernails dig into her cheeks. "I - we can't let him get hurt."

Tower of Demise: Top Floor

The clock was so close, all he had to do was get past the clockwork soldier! Harper pushed himself even harder, but before he could take another step he was flung across the room like a puppet. In a matter of seconds, the boy and all of his friends found themselves back at first base. All their efforts were rendered useless and it wasn't fair... it wasn't fair in the slightest. They were so close to home now, and he REFUSED to leave empty handed.

2889r28.jpg

"Noe?" Riley placed a hand over her forehead, the pain had subsided significantly but after what had happened she felt a little queasy. "What, what happened?" At one moment her friends had been giving Howl and Mica all they had, but now they were all back to square one, each one of them looking as confused as she did.

"A time magi, a very powerful one."

Riley let out a flurry of angry curses. If they were dealing with a time magician of sorts how would they ever reach the clock? Doubts invaded her mind and soon the usually headstrong girl felt a rush of hopelessness. What good were powers if that guy could undo every single thing they did? Before Riley could overthink, Ran launched himself forward.

"Ran!" She called out worriedly. After what had happened, it was clear Howl, Mica and the soldier were forces to be reckoned with.

Another person shot forward and the girl was surprised to see it was Harper. He was barreling towards the glass case with a determined glint in his eyes and she had never seen him so focused, the look on his face, it was fierce.

"Guys .... what do we do?"

"We go for the clock," Riley spoke loudly and without skipping a beat. "He's powerful, but even he can't keep this up forever." Her eyes flitted from Inadi to Ace and finally to Leila. "We'll tire him out and then we'll go home." It was a bold boast but they needed every sliver of hope they could get. She locked eyes with Noe and nodded her head. Don't worry... it'll be okay.

"HEY, rocks for brains!" Riley's waved her free hand over her head while the gloved one began to glow hotly.

Howl and Mica turned around in a daze. Who should they go after first?

"EAT FIRE!"

The fire sailed into Howl and he flailed his arms like pinwheels before taking a step back. It felt hot, but it didn't exactly hurt.

Noticing that the golems were distracted, C launched herself towards the clockwork soldier, shadows darting frantically beneath her feet. Zombie girl was right, even the strongest of fighters couldn't fight forever. "LET US GO HOME!"

The hooded figure's amulet shone brightly as shadowy tendrils shot out of the ground and shot towards the soldier.

The man simply hopped back, an apologetic frown plastered to his face. "Time, time, slow. Step, step we go. Tick tock."

C began moving at a snail's pace and so did the shadowy tendrils that were inches from the soldier's face. Without much effort, he sidestepped the attack. "Release!" C launched forward but instead of crashing into him she crashed into the tiled floor. "Please, let us not fight! We don't want to argue." His blue eyes flitted from Ran to Harper. He couldn't keep rewinding them or he would grow far too tired to defend the clock. Figuring that the adult was probably the bigger threat, he turned to Ran first. "Time, time slow!"

Harper, noticing what had just happened continued to run towards the case. "The clock!" He yelled out desperately. "Get to the clock!"

"Time, time slow!"

Harper felt every part of his body grow heavy and it seemed to take forever to take a single step. "The clock!" It was the only thought that ran through his head, and at the moment, he feared nothing.

Spooky Tower

Things weren't going their way. The golems were way too strong and the soldier turned out to be stronger than his gentle demeanor gave off. However, Ace was way too stubborn to give up. "Colbat, I need you to be back up. Try to sneak up on the bad guys while we try to attack from the front. Okay?" Colbat nodded in understanding, deciding to stick to the ground as if a predator in the forest. He waited for Ace to attack before he attacked as well, however the humans regrouped in order to plan again. Well more like, they were tossed back or knocked into a group again. As Ace listened to Riley's plan, she watched as Harper darted forward. Going one by one hadn't been working all too well, but she figured Harper had some idea what he was doing- He was the leader after all. Of course, that was only in Ace's eyes.

"Attack the soldier until he gets tired. Distract the golems." Ace nodded. "Got it." With nothing more to add or say, Ace gestured for Colbat to follow her. "Alright dragon here's the plan." She whispered a few tactics near his scaly head before giving him a firm nod and running off. Seeing both Harper and C be so easily knocked off to the side made her slow. Attacking one at a time wouldn't work. He could see all the attacks coming. "Guys! All at once! Hit him together!"

Saying that made both rock golems slowly step in front of their soldier. THeir goal was to protect and Ace's tone put them on high alert (whether they could understand the human language or not) "They're strong, but their slow. We can try to get past them." Ace encouraged, deciding to strike Mica's foot. Electricity didn't hurt too much for the rock creature, but it still bothered Mica. It was like an irritating pinch. The golem stepped away from the attack, creating a small opening. "Go, go!" Someone had to distract the golems and they weren't a big group anymore. Fortunately, Ace's electric punches managed to cause Mica to start swatting at her.

"Missed me you large boulder! Have to move quicker than- oof!" Instead of falling back when she was hit, Ace held on to Mica's hand.

"Stop sh-shaking!" Ace held on as tight as possible as Mica shook its hand as if flinging a bug off it. "Colbat a li-little help?" Small balls of fire shot up at Mica and Howl's legs. Fire wasn't extremely effective either to the rocks, but it still managed to annoy them at least a little.

Tower of Demise (Top Floor): Struggling for the Clock

iVheWgO.png

"Ran, Harper...." Lelia echoed Riley's words with the same worried expression mirrored on her face. What could they do? Everything they had done till now had been for naught when the soldier casted his rewind spell and whatever they might do in the future seemed equally pointless. This last thought prompted her mouth to form silent words that went unheard. "Come back ... please."

The rest, however, leaped straight into action after hearing Ace and soon Lelia felt compelled to join. Without thinking, she ended up taking several steps to the right, which brought her in line with Harper's current angle. As her eyes flitted worriedly from her rapidly slowing friend to the last clock sitting on a low pedestal covered by a domed glass case, she recalled a story James used to read to her when she was younger. She couldn't remember the title right now, but she remembered the dying enchanted rose housed within a glass dome and the scary man-beast guarding it. Sometimes, she still wondered if the beast even bothered to water the rose, because wilting was a sign that the plant needed water.

She blinked, suddenly realizing that she could get a clean shot at the pedestal and the encased clock sitting on it. Unconciously, she reached behind and pulled out a single arrow which she notched to the taut string of her bow. A semblance of a plan began forming inside her head, but for the first time in her life, Lelia only focused on the end result, shattering the case so that Ran or Harper could grab the clock. She pulled the string back and her amulet glowed. She took a deep breath, willing her arms to respond.

"Go, go!"

"Go?" Lelia snapped out of her zen-like trance and stared at Ace dangling from Mica's arm. Her eyes widened slightly, as a new thought overrode the first. Lelia's amulet glowed once again and she fired a single shot at Mica's arm.

Like before, her arrow bounced off the golem's hand and fell harmlessly to the floor. Mica, despite not being hurt, turned to search for the archer. He was still looking around, when a black streak shot pass him then it zipped back in the opposite direction. Poor Mica froze; his mind barely registering Cobalt's presence until it was too late. A spurt of cherry red flames hit Mica in the face, causing the golem to swat at the pesky dragon with his free hand, but, like an annoying housefly, Cobalt hovered out of reach.

NOE_V2.jpeg

Noe continued pressing her fingernails into her cheeks, while she worried about Ran then Harper then Riley then Ace and finally Cobalt. She bounced uselessly from foot to foot, watching Mica tracking the young dragon using sight. Wait, sight? Noe's hands fell to her side, as her rider training took over. She continued observing how the golems responded to sight, sound and sensation, as things began coalescing at the back of her mind. She needed one last component to make everything come together, but .... what?

More flames began dancing here and there and the resulting glare made Noe's eyes watered. The healer responded by lifting her arm up to shield the top half of her face. That's it! The golems' outer surface acted like highly polished mirrors, so theoretically a blast of light should reflect off them repeatedly and blind both of them ... eventually. She lost confidence again, as she realized she had forgotten the boss. Noe took a deep breath and searched for him. Oh, he's standing just behind the two golems. Judging from his furrowed brows, it seemed that the Clockwork Soldier was struggling to focus. Meaning, he needed concentration to sustain his current spells.

This realization caused Noe to pause for a second time. She knew breaking his focus would null his spells for those precious few seconds, but how was that going to fit into her current plan. Noe sighed uncomfortably, wishing Ise was here beside her. Her friend was always much more decisive and so awfully clever. As she dwelled on what her friend would have done in this situation, everything clicked.

No wait! It still worked
.
All she had to do was create a stronger blast, even though it would blind everyone else in the room. It wasn't much, really, but it sounded like a step in the right direction. Feeling a lot more hopeful, Noe looked around for a potential ally and the first person she saw was Lelia.

"Miss Archer, I have a plan!" Noe said in her back-to-normal quiet voice.

"Plan?" Making sure that she kept out of Mica's sight, Leila trotted to a halt besides Noe and listened.

"I need someone to grab the golems' attention while I cast a light spell. The blast should blind them and the soldier, hopefully. This should break the soldier's concentration, leaving Ran and Harper free from the spell he placed on them."

Light spell? Leila turned to look at the stone giant with Ace latched onto one of its arms and Cobalt circling it. A slab of material identical to what the rest of it was made of covered the area on their faces where the eyes would have been on a human's. "The golems?" She said, in the meantime drawing her bow to point to her side, "do they even -"

The golem stopped its flailing around for one moment and swatted the incoming arrow aside in a fashion that was unmistakably a result of seeing it coming.

"Yes," came Noe's whispered affirmation. At that time, though, Leila was not facing the direction of the healer because she had her eyes on the worrying sign that was Mica fixing the orientation of his head in their direction.

"This has to work -" she said, turning back to Noe, "-on the first try."

"Yes or your mana runs dry eventually." Noe nodded, sounding a little out of sync. "And we would have less options. Get ready," Noe instructed suddenly, as she noticed that Howl was moving away. "We need to act now. Miss Archer, it's all on you. Do what you can to aid Ran and Harper. Um .... you'll know when because I need to trigger the blast." The last bit went unsaid, because Noe chose to have faith in Lelia. Surely, someone so scholarly would think of a better plan.

Leila neglected to return a nod beforehand, picking up pace in her run towards Mica served just as well as a gesture of confirmation. Noticing that Howl and Mica are about to shift position, Noe pressed her second finger against her thumb and brought them to her lips. The shrill whistle coming from her lips made both golems stand still.

Before Mica could respond to Noe, the golem's attention was again diverted by the nuance that was a series of arrows sent its way. Leila moved slowly around the creature, minding the intervals between each shot so that it never had enough time to take off in any one direction. The violent motion loosened Ace's grip and Cobalt reacted by swooping in to rescue Sasha's friend.

Good, both of them remained where they were supposed to be, Noe thought with some relief, even though her heart raced crazily inside her chest. And ... hopefully, the redheaded hooman was okay. Noe pushed away these distracting thoughts with much reluctance and straightened her arms, so that her staff was in front of her.

Clearing her throat quickly and willing herself into the proper frame of mind, Noe began redirecting her mana into the staff until it glowed a gentle yellow. Her lips moved soundlessly, as she uttered the words of her incantation. Feeling wood grow warm in her hands, Noe fixed her eyes to the ceiling to prevent herself from getting distracted at this crucial juncture.

"Odathi ionfese igesuni!" Noe cried loudly, raising her staff above her head. A ball of light rocketed towards the ceiling. It soared higher and higher until it was way above the golems. Predictably, they began following the ascending orb with their unseen eyes. Noe bit her lower lip, waiting for the right moment to trigger the light burst.

Reaching over her back for the quiver Leila realized that there weren't many left. Then again - this only had to work once. Taking a step backwards out of the range of the golem, she sent one more shot in the direction of its visor, on which the arrow snapped. She shifted her position a bit more, notched another arrow, and pointed it at the golem's face. She looked over her shoulder at the healer.

"Azmum!"

Closing her eyes and tucking her head down, Leila released the arrow in the blind into a trajectory that was way too high to come anywhere close to hitting the golem just as the shimmering ball that floated below the ceiling exploded, scattering rays of light in all directions. Most ricocheted repeatedly off the golems' crystal bodies, which intensified and prolonged the blinding brightness. Startled shouts could be heard, as everyone in the room was affected, whether they were looking directly at the golems or not. Noe felt her staff slip from her hands and she dropped to her knees to find it. Her vision had gone white, but slowly black dots started forming round the edges.

Even with hands covering her eyes, Lelia's vision still went slightly blurry, so she could only enact in her mind what would have went down within the field of blinding light out of her sight. The parabola would miss Mica, arch over where Ran and Harper were struggling to move forward, and - hopefully - intersect with what she had been aiming at.

Until the light faded, she couldn't see; but from a distance she did hear a sound that vaguely resembled a case made of glass shattering, and the cascade of shards hitting the ground. Finally, when the light ebbed away, Lelia removed her hands and peered ahead. She could see Ran and Harper's shadowy outlines wobbling drunkenly, as they continued running. Even though they appeared to be affected by the blast, they were moving a lot faster now. Lelia rubbed her eyes. Staring even further into the distance now that her sight was a lot clearer, she saw that protective glass was gone. That meant the clock was theirs, if the two reached it before the next rewind.

As a bright light robbed him of his vision, the clockwork soldier let out a surprised yelp. As a result of the sudden blinding, his spells failed him and he stumbled forward drunkenly, reaching towards where he had last seen Harper and Ran. "Time, time reverse. Back, back we go."

Harper cringed, but by some miracle, he and Ran remained where they were. The boy and the adult exchanged a quick glance, they could hear their companions groaning in the background, but there was no time to process what had happened because this would probably be the only chance they would ever get. Both of them shot towards the clock, despite the black dots that danced across their vision.

"Time, time slow," the clockwork soldier sounded more like a lost child than anything else. "Step, step we go! Why isn't it working?"

They were so, so close! Harper's eyes flitted to the shattered case and the clock that lay merely a few feet away. They just needed a few more seconds! Ran was yelling something, but it went in one ear and out the other.

"I...I don't want to do this. Please, just LEAVE!"

The tiled floor beneath their feet began to shake as metal pipes tore through the flooring, spraying chunks of stone and metal across the spacious room. The pipes shot towards them like snakes diving in for the kill and Ran took the brunt of the sudden attack, letting out a loud yell as he wrestled with the angry mechanical pipes. He yelled for Harper to keep running, and a look of fear flashed across the clockwork soldier's face.

As the pipes released Ran, Harper dove for the clock. He hit the floor hard, but simply curled his body around it in case the soldier tried to take it away. But really, the soldier could do nothing now, and the pipes fell limply to the round as a bright light—at least thrice as bright as Noe's distraction—enveloped the entire room.

The floor beneath them and everything else in the room gave way, and there was nothing but miles and miles of endless white.

They fell.

December 31, 1825
It was a cold and gloomy night, and wherever they were, they were no longer in the tower. Through bleary eyes, Harper stared at the frozen puddles on the ground, at the brick buildings by the winding roads, and then at the dimly lit streetlamps and the orange glow they cast upon the snowy streets.

He blinked twice, not caring that it was freezing out. The boy gave his cheek a slight slap.

A cold and gloomy night. Could they be home?

It didn't feel like Nowhere, and the moon shone brightly overheard giving them a sense of time and place. If not for the men in crisp suits and women in old-timey dresses, he would have believed they were back on earth.

"Guys," Riley snapped him out of his train of thought, her eyes were fixed on a horse-drawn carriage. "Where... when are we?"

It was the question that hung at the back of their minds.

For a few moments, they said nothing and the only sound they heard was of the blustering winter wind.

"Is that her?" C broke the silence and pointed to a hooded figure in the distance.

Browsing through a fruit stand was a woman who looked very familiar.
ZFW2zZP.png

"Heading out tonight, Edith? You look positively excited."

"Why yes, I've got an appointment, and it's going to be quite important." The young woman beamed brightly as she paid for three apples.

"My, my, could it be a New Year's date with a fine gentlemen?" The shopkeeper asked in a friendly voice.

The comment made Edith chuckle. "I guess you could say it's a date, though it's not quite what you're imagining."

"Mhm? A promise to run away together by midnight then?"

"Oh, Sandra, you think everything is a fairy tale."

"Well, out with it!" The woman laughed. "Telling half a secret is a terrible, terrible crime."

Edith brought a pointer finger to her mouth as her lips stretched into a smile. "Let's just say, it's going to be a date with destiny."

[BCOLOR=transparent]Spooky Tower[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]In hindsight, this probably wasn't the safest plan. Then again, Ace didn't actually have a plan besides climbing on Mica's arm. She could definitely consider it hardcore parkour though if that counted as something. Being stuck was a little bit of a problem as Mica waved its arm around. She couldn't hold on forever and she definitely wasn't that one superhero…"Now who was it again?" Curse her broken memories. Ace was completely distracted by her own thoughts to pay attention to what was going on. "There's a superhero that can stick to things..And crawl on walls and stuff. Some bug I think- whoa…" She tried to adjust her grip. "Oh! I know! It's-" [/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent][/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]The sudden violent motion sent Ace flying off the golem's arm. Before she could plummet to the ground, Colbat caught her leg and then adjusted so he held her arm. Ace, not bothered in the slightest as if she knew she'd be okay, had given an affirmative nod to no one in particular. "It was Spider-man! That's the hero I was thinking of!" She was set down safely and she saluted Colbat. "Thanks buddy."[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]She headed towards Noe and Leila as the two looked more prepared and cautious than she- then again that was pretty typical. The sudden burst of light blinded her and the dragon near her. "Whoa. A little warning next time." Ace rubbed her eyes over and over as if it would wipe away the lack of vision. She instead could only see blurred lines and black dots. However, she could hear the panic in the clockwork soldier's voice and she through a fist into the air. "GO Ran! GO Harper!" She had no idea how close they were to the clock or if they even managed to see straight, but she had faith in them and for Ace that's all that mattered. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Despite being eyeless creatures, both golems reacted just the same to the blinding light. Their confusion to their sudden blindness caused them to flail around in attempts to find and stop the humans. They still had a job to do. Their mouths opened in distress and confusion, but no sound came from them. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]None of that mattered though. Something happened. Ace's vision cleared up in time to see Harper curled on the ground and Ran standing next to him, but suddenly- they were falling and everything went white. Ace tried to grab onto something, anything, but there was nothing but endless white around them. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"W-..What on earth?" Ace looked puzzled when she suddenly found herself stepping in a puddle. Her vision adjusted to the world around her. Roads, buildings, a moon- she didn't remember the last time she could depict between day and night. This had to be earth! "We're-!" Her excitement fell short. "This looks like earth. But it doesn't feel quite right…" The horse drawn carriage made her snap her fingers. "And that's probably why." Riley's question made everyone fall silent. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Each person was just as confused as the next. There were no answers for this. Not until C spoke up and turned their attention to a fruit stand not too far from them. "Hey, is that Queenie?! Oh man this must be Nowhere still. What's she doing buying food? Doesn't she have a freaking castle of food?" [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Ace didn't know she could ever even be this confused. This was going to give her some sort of headache after awhile. Too much was going on for her to process. What happened to the soldier and the golems? What happened to the tower all together!? Where the heck were they?! [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"She's leaving. We should go after her. Figure out what's going on." Before she stepped into the street, she looked at the others. "Unless you guys know what's going on?" Without waiting, she started to walk into the street only for one of the horse drawn carriages to rush by, causing her to jump backwards. "Hey! Watch it! People are walking!" Ace went ignored. The guy driving didn't even spare her a glance. How rude. [/BCOLOR]

Part 1: Blast to the Past (Ran, Harper, Clockwork and Noe)

2116trp.png

"Harper, well done, kid." Ran said as he stood there hunched over with his hands pressed against his knees. He stopped talking after that, because it was hard to say much when his body kept forcing him to gulp down mouthfuls of air to feed his screaming lungs. "Yeah … well done," he repeated again once the sting subsided.

"Well –"

Whatever Ran had intended to say was cut off. Sound was stripped from their surroundings when a light twice as bright as Noe's spell engulfed the entire room. Ran lurched around, clearly disorientated, and he found himself sitting beside Harper, as colors reappeared. The man stared at the rich hues with amazement almost forgetting to feel sad that he had long forgotten their names. Slowly, like a dripping oil painting, the colors melded together to form a scene reminiscent of Dicken's England.

The man winced and rubbed his bottom, the part closest to his tail bone, after he managed to get up to his feet. He offered Harper a helping hand, pulling the boy up as well. Harper remained there with his arms firmly wrapped round the clock. Both of them watched with their mouth hung open, as a man with a scuffed, black top hat nearly drove into them with his horse drawn carriage. The grimy water from the puddles leaped around, but the water passed through them, leaving the hoomans dry and clean.

"Virtual reality?" Ran mouthed silently. He couldn't help wondering if this was another memory. A trap, perhaps, similar to the one back in that terrible hallway filled with voices of their loved ones. His head spun from left to right violently, while he tried searching for possible clues. "Harper," he hissed. "Be on your guard. This – this could be like that weird hallway."

pNEls2Y.png

"You mean the Archive of Wishes?" came a very puzzled voice to Ran's right, which caused the man to jump dramatically. Ran's flailing hand smacked the person in the face, earning him a very loud "ow".

"You, you," Ran pointed dramatically, as he pulled Harper towards him. "Get back! We won't – we'll fight you no matter what."

NOE_V2.jpeg

"Ran, I don't know if we should." Noe offered quietly. Her blue eyes opening in wonder at the strange sights from an unidentified civilization. One filled with hoomans of different heights and hair and skin color. "Mr. Soldier seems as worried as we are…. Like, he doesn't know about this spell."

"I don't." The Clockwork Soldier said firmly, crossing his arms. "I wish to get to the bottom of this. Hopefully in one piece." The last phrase seemed like an unvoiced accusation that indicated the Nobody believed this was the hoomans' fault.

Noe blushed a little, because she sensed the irritation radiating from the clock's guardian. Keeping her eyes rooted to the ground, the girl raised a finger and pointed straight ahead. Realizing Noe had probably wished to tell them something, Ran looked in the direction she was pointing. As his eyes reached the end of the street, he caught a glimpse of Riley and Ace forcefully dragging Lelia along moments before the three girls disappeared round the corner with Inadi hot on their heels. Judging from the fact he couldn't see C around, it meant she was probably leading the group. He sighed.

"Let's go? I don't want them to end up getting hurt in this strange trap of yours."

Ran's verbal jab brought a more pronounced frown to the soldier's face. He muttered under his breath about "thoughtless hoomans" and "doing his duty", while he sulked at the back of the second group. His footsteps keeping in time easily with Harper's rushed ones. He shot the young hooman a very stern glare. "Mind your own business, please. I still insist I have nothing to do with this."

Part 2: What's Up with Delirium? (Edith Arkwright and Jean Morrowind)

Marching Towards Destiny

ZFW2zZP.png

Edith seemed to be in an exceptionally good mood. Her cheer stood out like a sore thumb compared to the gloomy air that hung around the rest of the drab crowd. This was made even more obvious when a better dressed gentleman pushed pass her causing her to fall to the ground. Even when the man chided her for not looking where she stepped, the girl continued smiling politely before offering him an apology. The sincerity of her voice took the man by surprise. Instead of returning her smile, he backed away then hurried off while darkly muttering about "crowded asylums" and "lunatics".

mww4r5.jpg

A white gloved hand stood opened and inviting in front of Edith's face. Her eyes traced the length of the arm until she saw the man's handsome face. Her eyes sparkled with delight and her smile brightened even more. "Oh Mr. Morrowind," she gushed, as a faint blush crept into her cheeks. "I didn't expect to bump into you here in the streets."

"Edith, I was getting so worried." Jean helped Edith to her feet and offered her his white handkerchief with a flourish. A few heads turned to look at the strange couple, a well-dressed gentleman of good breeding and a commoner standing facing each other, but he paid them no mind. "Come," he spoke gently, offering her his arm. "Destiny awaits us."

"Yes," she spoke demurely, apparently feeling very self-conscious. Her blush deepened slightly, when the folds of Jean's winter coat enveloped the two of them. She sighed happily loving the caress of the good quality wool against her drying skin. "I am a little nervous."

"It's natural," he reassured her. "I'll be with you every step of the way."

Edith nodded, as her eyes flit to the white outer edge of the thing peeking out of Jean's inner pocket. It took her a moment to realize what it was and that brought a smile to her face. Yes, today was their date with destiny and she'd have a friend whom she trusted guiding her to a brighter future.

The couple walked pass several well-dressed women decked from head to toe in wintery finery, but they remained oblivious to the shocked gasps escaping the women's lips. A woman with a fox fur wrap leaned towards her two companions and whispered. "Isn't that Lord Morrowind's younger son?"

"You mean, young Jean?" Asked the lady with the fluffy white scarf.

"Yes," fox fur confirmed. "It's such a disgrace. He's engaged to a nice girl, but continues walking down the streets showing off his latest strumpet while looking oh so proud."

The third lady, one wearing a mink wrap, made a face. "Look, they seemed to be headed to the train station." She pointed to the familiar facade of the newly built London Victoria station a few streets down. "I think he wishes to elope with her."

This made her companions gasped loudly. Fox fur fanned herself with her gloved hands. "Oh, Serenity! Please don't say such things. I – I, oh gosh, I think I need my smelling salts."

Just behind the gossiping women, Riley and C continued fighting their way through the rest of the people crowding the streets as they tried to catch up with Edith and Jean.

"Geeez, people here are ruder than New Yorkers!" Riley exclaimed as a stooped shouldered man blocked her way ostinately. "I'm right in front of you. Look at me!"

"Zombie girl, this way." C spoke with quiet determination, as she dragged Riley off the sidewalk and onto the less crowded paved road. "No one here."

"Right," Riley said with a grateful nod, as she returned to the mystery at hand. A really bizarre one. For some strange reason, there was a man who looked suspiciously like Amiel here on earth too. More alarmingly, he also seemed to know Queen D. Does that make this Nobody evil too? Gosh, Lesley would be so heartbroken if he knew.

At the Station

The jostling crowd at the station proved to be a challenge from the moment they entered. Jean gripped Edith's hand even more firmly and braced himself before he lead her through the crowd. It didn't take long for them to disappear among the sea of bobbing heads much to the frustration of anyone trying to tail them. The many sign boards and loud, conflicting calls from the train conductors announcing their respective train's departure provided the Lost Souls with little indication as to where the couple went.

For a moment, C and Riley stood there side by side. The two girls bobbed up and down, as they tried to see whether they could spot either "Amiel" or "Queen D". Perhaps luck was on their side or something else entirely, but as soon as the black train blocking their view pulled away, the hoomans spotted the couple again. They were two platforms down, hovering beside the door that led to the first class carriage.

"Mr. Morrowind, are you sure?" Edith hesitated. Her face lit up once more as she noticed the carriage number printed on her ticket. The very thought of her entering a place reserved for the rich or the titled didn't sit very well with her. It felt like they were begging to be caught. "I mean, I don't belong there." She pleaded. "I can go to the third class carriage then meet you later."

"Nonsense, darling," Jean laughed, ruffling Edith's hair. "You're my precious guest and anyone telling us otherwise can sod off."

"Mr. Morrowind!" Edith gasped upon hearing him swear. "You shouldn't say such things… it's not proper."

"All aboard, train leaving in 10 minutes," the conductor called, as he leaped down from the next door. The impact of his landing knocked his glasses askewed and his pocketwatch flew out of his pocket. He groped around blindly for a bit. "Glasses... where'd you go?"

"Here you go, Mr. Tunna." Edith said kindly, as she bent down to pick up the glasses that landed by her feet. She kneeled down and slipped them onto his face as gently as she could. "You really should get new glasses."

"Edith?" Samuel Tunna beamed as his vision cleared. "You ... I see you're here with young Jean." He winked, making her blush. He pressed a finger to his lips. "Just this once, I'll make an exception. Hurry along now and up you two go before anyone has the chance to complain."

Landing in a very old looking England made Inadi feel like he was diving into an old book that he was deeply captured by. Everything seemed so clean. So pristine and in its prime. Looking over at some of the others that managed to land near him after the blinding white light that had nearly left a hole in his pupil from pure burn out made Inadi realize that it wasn't time to enjoy the scenery. It was time to get back to work and find that damn clock that was causing all the problems that they had seemingly fallen into since they went into that damn tower not too long ago. At least it felt like a while. Time was trivial in Nowhere for the most part and at this point, wasn't really that important.

What was however incredibly vital for him Ace and Leila that had found themselves nearby him to find out was what in the world was going on with the woman not to far away from them that seemed to resemble the Queen from Nowhere. Inadi picked himself up quickly and began stepping towards Ace only to have her and the others quickly prance off in the distance. Inadi tried to angle himself through the busy streets but found himself struggling to maintain his lane in the sidewalk as he tried to follow the two bright red covers that Riley and Ace called hair as light houses in the busy streets.

The whole location just screamed old movies. It was a beautiful place full of lights and classical garb. Even the carriages seemed to be adorned with pleasant gold linings and bright paint as if they had just been taken out of the carpenter's workhouse. The horses breath seemed just a tad bit visible in the cool breeze yet it was just warm enough to go with the shoulders exposed if you so chose to do so for the women in the crowd. Perhaps that would be something Jasper would find interesting in regards to the style here. Inadi always thought she was more of a strapless dress kind of person anyway. While lost in his quick thought Inadi found himself with the others watching the scene of the Queen with some person who looked strikingly like Amiel from their old group of guides. Perhaps a circus was in town and they'd find a bear to look like Mr. Cuddles too. Chuckling to himself Inadi stood behind Riley as he tried to crane his neck to get a better angle.

Seeing the glasses picked up off the floor Inadi made a quick reach for his own. Those ones seemed to be in prime condition all things considered and would be wonderful as a replacement pair perhaps for his own. Yet his thought was abashed quickly as he looked further up the train track to see if any other trains were coming along. It looked like this could be one of the last trains for the next few hours as the rest of the track seemed as bare as a field of wheat struck by famine. Giving a quick nudge to Riley he looked and motioned towards the train. "I think we should get on that thing as fast as we can. It's too much of a coincidence that this lady looks just like the Queen. Perhaps we get some kind of extra hint or clue as to why this whole thing with Nowhere starts with that stupid train." Inadi told her as he looked up and down the way in front of them. The streets still seemed crowded and if he wasn't mistaken the man with the glasses said the train took off in ten minutes, which now was probably more like seven. If they were going to get on that train and follow that oddly familiar woman, they'd all have to do it quickly.

Memory of 1825: Train Station

"Inadi's right, whatever this is... it isn't a coincidence." Riley's eyes flitted from the queen to the eerily familiar gentleman beside her. "We've got a train to catch, let's go." She motioned for the rest to follow after her, but the clockwork soldier placed a hand on her shoulder and stopped her.

"What?" The girl shot him an irritated glance, they were running out of time after all.

The harsh tone in Riley's voice didn't phase him and he merely shook his head. "Haven't you all noticed? Everyone looks straight through us, that, or they do not look at all. We don't belong in this memory, we play no part and therefore we do not exist."

339jevs.png

"We don't?" Harper looked positively confused.

"We don't." The soldier repeated before he strode forward with his shoulders squared and his head held high. He made it a point to keep his hand on the hilt of his sword at all times. Like the lost souls, he too wondered what role the queen played in this memory.

Harper watched with wide eyes as the clockwork soldier walked through people as if he were a ghost.

No one seemed to pay him any attention, so Harper followed his lead and found out that he was capable of the same feat. They all were.

suGBCks.png

"To the train then," C declared as the lost souls followed after the Clockwork soldier.

In no time flat they managed to reach the queen and her date. And the strangest part about it was how normal the two looked. Edith didn't look like a queen in the slightest, and he was the picture of normal. They simply appeared to be two people running away together.

"What do you think happened?" C asked to no one in particular.

Even the clockwork soldier himself shrugged. He didn't know.

"Careful, my dear, the ice always makes things a tad slippery, yes? Wouldn't want you getting hurt on such a lovely evening." He assisted her up the steps and followed closely, Jean had a bright smile on his face and an excited twinkle in his eyes. "This is the night we've all been waiting for, and I can see you're nervous, but we're in this together, till the very end, yes?"

"Of course, Mr. Morrowind, as long as we have each other, everything will be fine."

Knowing that she trusted him made the gentleman glow with pride. "Well, we best be going. I shall see you later, my good man."

Samuel Tunna nodded his head.

"Yes, we'll see you soon." Edith added in before she took his right hand in his and mouthed a few words.

The smile on Samuel's face simply grew wider. Tonight was going to be a very special night indeed, and not just for Edith and Jean but for several of them. December 31st of 1825 would be an evening plenty of people would talk about for ages. "Enjoy the ride, you two."

They disappeared into the next carriage while humans shuffled after them.

"Do you... do you think they got into an accident?" Riley whispered as she stared at the happy pair. Neither of them struck her as villains.

"I don't know," Harper looked conflicted. Just who was the queen?

"We'll find out," it was the clockwork soldier. "All memories come to an end."

Edith and Jean made their way to their seats and chattered cheerfully about how tonight would be the perfect evening. As they talked about meeting up with the rest of their friends eventually, a blissful smile made its way onto Edith's face. Mum, dad, just wait for me a little longer, okay?

Tonight, everything would change and their wishes would finally be granted.

Aboard the Train: Lost Souls Get Organized

2116trp.png

Ran looked bored. Their lovey dovey couple have been sitting together quietly for the last two hours. In fact, he doubted there'd be any action at all, considering that Edith had fallen asleep. Currently, she was lying on the bench with her head on Jean's lap while he read a book titled "The Spirit of the New Age". The adult turned to Harper who was starting to doze off as well. "Say Harper, want to go explore the train? I don't think we'll learn much standing here." Noticing that Riley was looking at him eagerly as well, Ran grinned. "Rils, feel free to join us. C, you too, and anyone else."

"I think I'll stay here and keep an eye on the queen," Harper replied. Yes, she wasn't doing anything now, but they knew she would eventually. The clock had to be showing them this for a reason. "Want to keep guard with me?" The boy asked as his eyes flitted to Ace.

"Splitting up does work in our favor, I guess we'll catch you guys later." Riley nodded to those who wished to come along then began peering around. Well, if one thing was certain, it was that this was in no way the midnight train.

Ran gave Riley a huge thumbs up. "I like your spirit, Rils. Let's meet back here in an hour or so? I want to check on the conductor earlier. I mean, don't any of you find it weird that his name is Tunna? It reminded me of Mayor Spicy Tuna."

NOE_V2.jpeg

"It could be a coincidence?" Noe suggested. She was starting to get a little freaked out by the little coincidences. Everything from the Queen being in the hooman world and the conductor whose name was too similar to that of the mayor. "I'm sure Tunna is a common name..."

"It isn't," Ran replied immediately. "I'm pretty sure this is my first time hearing it. Well, you could stay here with Harper if you like, Noe. I'm sure the rest of us will be fine." He flashed the healer a grin and turned to the Clockwork Soldier. "So, Mr. Soldier, are you joining us Lost Souls?"

The clockwork soldier's face had grown icy. "I shall stay by the queen. If anything strange happens, please regroup. I know it is merely a memory, but it's best to be cautious."

"Aye aye," Ran said with a jaunty wave. "Let's check out the second class carriage. I bet there are a lot more interesting people there." He placed both hands on Riley's shoulders and steered her towards the door at the end of the first class carriage.

Aboard the Train: More Passengers Arrive (approx. 20 minutes later)

At the next major city, a fourteen year old girl entered the first class carriage. Behind stood a stern looking woman who had her steel blonde hair pulled up into a bun. The woman appeared to be a governess of sorts based on the way she lectured her young charge. "Now Miss Isabella, I want you to be on your best behavior. Your Aunt is the one who is going to send you to finishing school, so you must do you must try your best to impress her."

The girl with raven hair frowned lightly and her arms tightened round the wiggling black Scottish terrier in her arms. "Miss Falkner, please call me Ise. I feel funny when you call me Miss Isabella."

Miss Falkner glared back, making Ise look away quickly. "Miss Isabella," she admonished. "You are a young lady and I shall treat you as such, so no more whining about how I choose to address you."

Ise bit her lip and stared at the hem of her skirt that hovered around her ankles. By the way her lips quivered, she appeared to be trying her best not to cry. "Yes, Miss Falkner." The girl said solemnly.

"Good," Miss Falkner said. "Now let's find our seats before the train leaves the station. I don't want you falling down and hurting yourself."

The girl cuddled her dog and whispered softly. "I know, Cobalt, I don't like her too. I wish my old Nanny didn't have to leave."

NOE_V2.jpeg

Noe watched with her mouth slightly open. The girl looked so much like her best friend that she felt that she needed a second look. The healer pulled away from her companions and ran over to the compartment she saw Ise enter earlier. As she peered through the narrow window, she could see Miss Falkner shaking hands with Jean as they exchanged new year greetings. Ise, however, sat sulkily beside Edith and played with her black dog.

"Mr. Morrowind seems to know a lot of people," Noe commented softly. She knew coincidences happened, but this seemed a little too well orchestrated. "I don't like this. Someone planned for them to meet here... but who?"

[BCOLOR=transparent]Timey Wimey Confusion[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Things were getting freaky. And confusing. And kind of creepy. Ace was actually a a lot more confused than she was willing to admit. The why's and how's of the situation had stopped making sense to her. Every time she tried to puzzle piece it together, it ended up giving her a minor headache. Sure she understood that the clock was their last key to get home, but everything after that (And probably a few pieces in between) had been a blur of confusion. But she had to ask herself the real question: When did any of it make sense in the first place? Magical trains. Human/animal hybrids, mermaids, rabbits that were guards- and possibly past humans- this was all too much for Ace. It was why things were always kept simple. It was one of the reasons she never payed attention to the plans. All she needed was one direct order. And most of them were to grab an item or help a friend. Everything else was just supposed to fill in the blanks for her. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]At the moment, she couldn't do much about her confusion. She just followed everyone else, keeping a wary eye on the soldier that fell with them. The fact that he knew little of what was going on comforted and discomforted the redhead. It was comforting to know that he wasn't the cause of this problem and wouldn't fight us because he'd be too busy trying to figure things out. However on the other hand, they now had no guidance or help because the one person in Nowhere who handled time had no idea what to make of this...memory as it was deduced. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Growing impatient like Riley, she aided in pulling Leila along to follow Queenie. "C'mon Glasses, keep up." Ace taunted, only to get him to follow really. She knew that he didn't trust her and Riley walking off together- for some reason he thought they were trouble makers or something. Ha! How silly. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"Get on the train. Got it." Ace mumbled to herself before staring in amusement at the idea of being ghosts. "That's...cool." She tried it herself, stepping in front of people. When they walked through her she shivered dramatically. "Kind of weird though." She chuckled and followed everyone else. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]On the train, the time passed and nothing happened. Ace continuously walked around, even going through people to see if something interesting would happen- but not a thing did. "Ugh, where are they even going?" Obviously no one knew the answer to that. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Looking over at Harper, she saluted with a grin. "Yeah sure. Guard duty just in case those two do...anything." It had been two hours, she wasn't sure that would happen. "Don't cause any commotion without me Riley." Ace laughed and waved them off before taking a seat next to Harper. "Now...we wait."[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]There was little to discuss, save for Ace asking Harper for help understanding things she didn't get- like who was the Tunna guy? "You'd think that after what's happened we'd have some fear of trains by now…" [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]"That chick looks familiar." Ace sat up from leaning against Harper when Noe jumped up. "Hey it's one of the dragon ladies- oh! It's Colbat's dragon lady!" The only reason she caught on to it was because of the dog. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Towards Noe's assessment, Ace shrugged. "It is New Year's eve or something right? A holiday. Doesn't everyone go visit family or do something special? Well, mostly everyone?" She saw it as a coincidence. They all just happened to be at the same place, at the same time. What was so important about this memory had still been unanswered.[/BCOLOR]

Onboard the Train: (Approximately 5 hours into the trip)

"It is?" Harper stared at the young girl and her pet dog. Ace was right, there was no denying the resemblance between them, and even the tiny terrier looked a little like Cobalt. The boy's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Noe, is this normal?" He looked to the resident cleric, but when he noticed she looked just as confused as they did, he focused on the Clockwork Soldier.

"It started with this memory," the man whispered. He didn't know why, but he felt it in his bones—everything started with this memory.

NOE_V2.jpeg

Noe shook her head in response to Harper's question then leaned in closer till her cheek was flat against the smooth glass pane. Her blue eyes opened wider when Mr. Morrowind took out a golden watch dangling from a well-polished metal chain that looked similar to the big one Harper was hugging. She pulled her eyes away and stared at the Last Clock. "Did you ....? They look the same but the Last Clock is bigger."

"It is 11.25," Jean informed his companions, as he flicked open his gold pocketwatch. "I suggest we get ready if we wish to be ready for our date with destiny."

"We?" Ise jolted awake from her sleepy stupor and her eyes widened when she saw the serious looks on the faces of her three adult companions. There was something threatening about the leer her governess gave her, which caused the young girl to hug her dog tightly and scoot away until she was squashed at the edge of her leather covered seat. The only thing separating her and the dark landscape whizzing past was a thin, cold metal wall with a glass window. "Miss Falkner?" The girl's voice trembled. "I'm scared," she whispered, as tears began forming in her eyes.

Feeling the tension among the humans, the terrier tucked his flappy ears against his head and snarled at Miss. Falkner. He didn't like how the woman was scaring his human and he didn't like the secretive way Edith and Amiel spoke to each other either.

Cobalt the dragon shared his counterpart's sentiments. Things had been strange ever since the beginning, and everyone acting all eerie didn't help ease his worries. Black smoke wafted out of his half open mouth as his yellow eyes focused on Miss Falkner in particular.

"Easy, Cobalt." Harper stretched his arm in front of the uneasy dragon. "It's just a memory... they can't hurt us and we can't hurt them."

Harper's words made Cobalt back down a little.

"Miss Falkner?" Ise whispered again, as she tucked her legs closer to her chest as if she was trying to shield her growling dog. "Please ... I'll leave and ..." The girl shot up and tried running for the door when a silvery blade flashed in front of her. She shrieked and stepped back. "I ... please ... I want to see my Mommy and Daddy again." She sobbed. "Please..."

Noe and the soldier were struggling to keep Harper from leaping in. The boy was yelling loudly to the girl, begging her to get away. No! No, no, no! He continued yelling, while an irrational voice whispered in his mind that perhaps they could prevent all this from happening ... all this ... then none of the Lost Souls, not Haku, not Leon, not Emily ... no one would have died. Everyone would be home again, safe and sound.

"Well now," Jean got up and grabbed Edith's wrist. "Seems your little ward is a little overexcited. Edith and I shall go out for a stroll while you put her to bed."

ZFW2zZP.png

Edith's eyes held a twinge of regret, as she was pulled along out the door. She could see the terrifying Miss Falkner hovering over the little girl with a knife. She scrunched her eyes shut moments before a blood curdling scream shattered the sleepy silence of the First Class carriage. The screams of pain and fear grew weaker as the knife flashed repeatedly, each stab made the wicked blade even redder. Jean's grip tightened round her wrist, as they both made their way towards the door that led towards the engine room. However, before they could even reach the door, startled passengers began streaming out of their cabins. Much to Jean's frustration, an elderly man in a smart silk suit blocked his way.

"Out of my way, please, my wife isn't feeling well." Jean lied through gritted teeth.

"No, leave your wife with mine. We need to investigate," the old man insisted, as his eyes peered worriedly over Jean's shoulders. He could see two other men rushing towards the opened cabin door from the other end of the first class cabin. "It sounded like a child had gotten hurt."

"I'm warning you," Jean threatened. He reached into his pants pocket and wrapped his hand round the stock of his pistol. "I'm giving you till ten. One... two..."

Blood coated the stoic Miss Falkner's hands, but she didn't care in the slightest, instead she kicked the yapping terrier and sent it flying into his mistress's dead body. Nearby onlookers had begun to scream but she didn't seem to mind in the slightest. Reaching into her winter cloak, she pulled out a white mask and placed it over her face. The time had come to face their destiny. She let off a manical laugh and branished her stained knife.

"Nova Aetas," Miss Falkner yelled over and over again as her knife glinted evilly in the gaslamp lit carriage. At her feet, two bodies lay faced down with a growing stained eating into the carpet. She flicked the blood off her knife hand and began walking towards the horrified passengers at the back. "Time for destiny."

More screams filled the place and people tried desperately to open the door leading to the safety of the other carriage, but the first few there found that it was securely locked from the outside. Slowly, with a sick smile on her face, the murdering governess walked towards the frightened group huddled at the back like a flock of sheep.

"Oh, you naughty, naughty, children," she cooed. "It's time for bed. The faster you sleep the faster we get to see the new age." She stood before the lone strangler and raised her knife over her head. "Nova Aetas!"

"No..." Harper stood frozen beside Ace and Noe. A mass murder was taking place before them and they couldn't do a thing. His knees wobbled and he found himself leaning against one of the edge of one of the seats for support. Even the the clockwork soldier looked horribly pale.

The soldier stretched out a shaky hand as he fought back tears. "Time, time, rewind. Back, back we go." Nothing happened and the clockwork soldier repeated the chant as if it were a prayer. He knew it was a memory, but it was a twisted, horrible one! And more than anything he wanted to change the fates of these poor, poor people.

"The Queen..." Harper sounded like a fish that had been thrown onto dry land. "We need to get to her to find out the truth."

Bang! A shot was fired and the acrid smell of gunpowder filled the enclosed death trap. Screams came from the front followed by a second shot. Then a cacophony of screams filled the air as the panicked survivors began crushing those at the very back against the wall. Noe wiped away her tears with both hands and a righteous fury shone in her eyes.

"She's ... her friends killed all these people," she said in a shakey voice. "We have to tell everyone the truth. I'll go after them..." It sounded braver than she felt, but she felt compelled to learn as much as she could, so she could tell Ise and the rest just how evil their Queen was. All this innocent blood spilled shall not be forgotten. Noe took a deep breath and walked over to a quaking Harper. "Here, take a deep breath."

As he followed what she advice, the girl pressed her palm over his teary eyes, allowing a strange warmth to flow downwards. "Better? It's a calming spell my grandma taught me long ago... to help me with my shyness." She bit her lip and stared steadily into the boy's face although her own eyes were brimming with tears.

A warm glow rushed throughout Harper's body and the boy nodded his head. "Thank you." With the extra courage Noe had given him, he turned to look at his friends. They'd gotten this far and now they finally had a chance to put an end to all this.

"Go get the rest," the clockwork soldier advised. "I'll follow the rider and make sure she comes to no harm." He exchanged nods with Ace and Harper before the two Lost Souls dashed towards the door at the back. Harper gritted his teeth and looked determinedly ahead, as he tried his best to ignore bodies and the screams that enveloped him. This ... this was like a bad dream. If he believed hard enough, maybe Abby would wake him any minute now and pull him into a her warm, protective embrace. The thought allowed him to run faster until he managed to pass through the door and straight into the second carriage.
