We call our world Nomae-Ralo.

Our world is very different from yours. Your world is dominated by humankind, with no room for other sentient life. The menagerie of races that is our world, is only the stable for myths and 'fairy tales' in yours. We have quarrels, and power struggles same as yours. Only we have yet to discover the inner might of a lightning strike, so we huddle around wood and rock fire, or oil lamps when the land is ruled by the night.

And yet here you are, in our world. An otherworldly force has opened a door between our worlds to pluck you from there, and dropped you here.

It's not just you who has come from that world, others were taken as well. They come from across your globe, and even from different times. Some of you lived centuries apart.

At first we just called you all Strangers. Because you spoke a tongue never heard, dressed odd to us, and some of you brought strange weapons. Dangerous weapons. The best of us took you in. The worst of our leaders jailed you for your strange ways.

But rather quickly, you Strangers became two very different groups. The Drifters are those of you who keep your distance from other Strangers and even the natives, preferring to wander in search of something only you could understand.

Then there are The Enders. Those Strangers who passed from your world and have taken it upon themselves to exert their will on the native humans, to end their dominion and existence by any means. Maybe something horrible happened to them in their world, why they choose to do this.

In some of you, the passing between worlds granted you unnatural power. Most with this kind of power became an Ender, but the possession of power does not make one Drifter or Ender. Choices do that.

What choices are you going to make in our world?

--------------------

Thank you for reading my introduction to this rather ambitious project of mine. In full disclosure, this roleplay idea is inspired by and draws a lot from the manga Drifters by Kohta Hirano, the same mind behind Hellsing.

That being said, this will not follow the storyline of the manga and will be markedly different from its source inspiration. We, as in myself and my new partner @Camleen , have been toiling to create something we hope you find fresh and exciting.

We have put together a plethora of races to interact with, and a varied map to explore. But it's all for nought without the right players.

The premise is as follows: Your character is a person from Earth who has found themselves saved from death, only to be dumped in a new strange world populated by all sorts of beings and creatures told of only in myths and legends. How does your character react and adapt to this world? That's the fun we want to have and share with you.

For the start of the plot no PC will be an Ender or Drifter, but their choices will define that later.

Camleen and I will be playing our characters, and NPC Enders characters as needed.

Expectations

  1. Adept to Advanced level of writing. Sorry to say but if you don't care what quality is given in your posts or those of other players, then this is not for you.

  2. Respect for the GM and other players. We are all (presumably) adults here, and so we must conduct ourselves as adults who play pretend on the internet.

  3. Be mindful that others will have different posting speeds than yourself. Some of us can do multiple in a day, some cannot, and that's okay. Ideally we can get by with everyone making at minimum four posts a week.

  4. If you are having issues with character creation, have something coming up where it would be necessary to bench your character temporarily, please let me know so it can be worked out.

  5. There will be adult themes such as violence, adult language, and situations. If characters happen to become romantically/sexually involved, please move it elsewhere and keep it out of our main thread to comply with site rules.

  6. Be engaging, be bold, bring your best!
For characters, I have the character template below followed by the CS for my own character as an example. For appearances you can go raw and just describe in text, or use realistic to semi-realistic artwork/game images.

Players can choose to base their character on an established historical figure, a folklore character, or an OC with some basis in history.

I am not a historian by any means, nor do I expect anyone else to be, so total historical accuracy is not expected. But let's not get too crazy. We don't need or want a Theodore Roosevelt who is also a Vampire or something insane like that. However a character like Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter is what we're looking for.

EARTH VEHICLES

In the source it is possible to bring vehicles from Earth, however there will be a rough mass limit. To avoid confusion with those of us who use different measurement systems I'll make it simple.

The lower limit will be a bicycle.

The upper limit will be a tank.

If it's not clear where a vehicle falls under these parameters I will make a judgement on a case by case basis.

That being said there will be a limit on fuel. This is roughly medieval era, so no fossil fuels. I say a vehicle will have just enough fuel to last it a couple days of use, then it becomes dead weight unless the player can OOC discuss with me how it could be powered alternatively.

Thank you to TheTechnologicVampire for bringing this up.

LANGUAGES
For languages, Camleen and I have agreed when writing your character's dialogue you can do like so:

(In Spanish) "Can I have water?"

OR you can use Google Translate to write it like this:

"Puedo tomar agua?" (Can I have water?)

Be aware that part of the fun for the early plot is that there will be characters who cannot communicate in a common language, until I the GM use an NPC to grant your character that ability later on.

There will be races with their own languages, but since neither I or Camleen are linguists we have not developed actual languages for each, but that will be seen in the RP itself. No Earth character will start knowing any languages not native to Earth.

Powers
The following powers are not permitted as they are defined as OP by the GM (Me)
  • Godly Strength (Hulk, Superman, etc.)
  • Reality Manipulation
  • Transformation
  • Faster-than-light speed
  • Teleportation
The powers below and others like it are up for grabs/negotiation.
  • Element Manipulation (Within reason)
  • Enhanced Strength
  • Enhanced Durability (No instant healing factor)
  • Enhanced Speed (lower than supersonic)
These lists will be subject to change as necessary.

Furthermore to clear up confusion about how/why your character would have these powers, I will first use characters from the source material to illustrate.

  • Joan of Arc was burned at the stake = She now has pyrokinesis
  • Anastasia Romanoff was of the Royal Family in Russia, Russia is known for its harsh winters and how it's helped them historically = She can summon/control ice and snow. (Cue Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin)
I want the players to be creative with their characters, but do not encourage powers or no powers, that is up to you all. If it informs their character/history, then by all means they can have an associated power. If you cannot define one power to do that, they (the character) does not need one.

Thank you everyone who has fielded questions to me.

If you are looking for possible real-life persons from history to base your character from, Wikipedia has compiled a nice list for reference. Maybe some of us will learn a lot from this RP? I certainly have already and it hasn't even begun!

Unexplained Disappearances

I hope none of this has intimidated you, and if you are interested enough to join state so below and, if you feel so inclined, post your character. And feel free to ask further questions here or in PM.

Ciao~

Short Bio: Born in Cork, Ireland the daughter of lawyer William McCormac and his servantwoman Mary Brennan. Historically little is know about her early childhood, but she was dressed as a boy and called 'Andy' by her father to evade Brennan's wife and family. The ruse was eventually uncovered and they moved to the Province of Carolina. It is said when she was disowned by her father, she set fire to his plantation.

Eventually Anne married James Bonny, and the two moved to Nassua, a known haven for pirates. It was here she met pirate captain John "Calico Jack" Rackham and became his lover. She divorced James Bonny and embarked on a life of piracy. Anne would find another close companion in Anne Read, a woman who had been posing as a man throughout her life and career at sea.

Together the three would enjoy many successful raids on small vessels. Anne often demonstrated her proficiency with pistol and sword, described by crew and enemies as a competent and dangerous fighter.

On October 1720, the three were attacked and captured by a 'King's Ship' commisioned by the Governor of Jamaica. While the rest of the crew, Calico Jack included, were too drunk to resist, Anne and Read fought until overwhelmed and arrested. The whole crew were sentenced to hang for their crimes, and history records Anne's last words to her lover Calico Jack to be "Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog."

Anne and Read would get a stay of excecution by pleading they were both with child. Read and Anne contracted the same feverish disease, but while Read lost her battle, Anne fought it off enough to escape both the authorities and historical record.

Knowing she could not risk using her infamous name or even return to piracy, she boarded a ship intent on returning to James Bonny and a quiet life. Her chosen vessel was attacked by a nameless pirate crew, and in the fight she disappeared. The pirates could not believe they had actually seen a door catch the woman as she fell overboard, so they took that impossible sight to their graves.

That was the last any of that world would see of Anne Bonny...

OUR DISCORD

Reactions: Riruru and Waffur
I sent a message to Ms. Ezra, but since I figured this is the OOC of this RP (fairly new to Iwaku, do excuse me), I thought I'd drop my submission for a character in here. Please enjoy!

Name:
Baron Roman Nicolaus Maximilian von Ungern-Sternberg
AKA Roman Fyodorovich von Ungern-Sternberg
Date/Era of Birth: 10 January 1886 (age 35)

Date/Era of Death or Disappearance:
15 September 1921

Allegiance:
Formerly the White Movement and Mongolia

Weapons/Supplies:

  • x1 M1881 cavalry sabre (shashka),

  • x1 Mosin-Nagant Dragoon rifle, with five rounds in the magazine, ten rounds to reload with,

  • x1 pair of boots,

  • x1 set of clothes (Mongolian deel),

  • x1 bandolier.

Abilities: Horse-riding, shooting, swordsmanship, leading, brawling, languages, cultures.

Power: "Clairvoyance"; knowledgeable in eastern religions and the occult, Ungern-Sternberg was once thought to have the ability to read the minds of the people around him. While certainly not the case, he has an uncanny ability at reading people.

Diseases/ Other Weaknesses: Some say it comes from the scar of a sabre's cut across his face from a bar fight, others say he's always been such a man, but Ungern-Sternberg is the very definition of a short temper, along with being a heavy drinker when the opportunity presents itself. These two traits do not mix well, along with a natural belligerence, hot-headiness and free-spirit, Ungern-Sternberg has seen his fair share of fights and will probably see many more. He also equates thinking to cowardice, so aside from strategy on the battlefield, any deep thought before an action is rejected by him.

Languages Spoken: Primarily German and Russian, though speaks French, English and Estonian fluently. Knows a good amount of Mongolian.

Short Bio:

"My name is surrounded with such hate and fear that no one can judge what is true and what is false, what is history, and what is myth."
-Roman von Ungern-Sternberg, 1921

Few modern men could ever be said to have "legends" surrounding them. With the prevalence of historical accounts of varying amounts of truth to them, it's become fairly easy to see what is true and what is simple conspiracy in someone's life. However, Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg defies this trend, tramples it, cuts it wide open and leaves its viscera coloring the hooves of his horse and the blade of his shashka. A man of high nobility become a warlord, he was considered by some the reincarnation of Genghis Khan, by others the incarnation of Tsagan Burkhan, the God of War. Others called him an ultra-monarchist madman, a psychopath, a loose cannon.

Though his most famous exploits were during his last year of life in the service of the Bogd Khan, a leader he brought back into power in Mongolia, he spent most of his life fighting for the house of the Romanovs, in the Russian Empire and the white movement during the Civil War. All of this, while actually being of nearly entirely Baltic-German blood, with a few drops of Hungarian lineage. Indeed, Roman was born in Graz, Austria, in 1886, though his family moved to Estland, present day Estonia, in 1888, where his parents later divorced. A childhood in his remarried mother's care deprived him of a real father figure and Roman quickly grew into a troubled youth.

In school, he was rebellious, bad-tempered, even violent, often fighting other students and getting into various other bouts of delinquency, eventually being withdrawn from school. To find a new direction, he left to fight in the Russo-Japanese War, though he never fought in this war, arriving too late to participate. As he learned the arts of war in Saint Petersburg, he took an unhealthy obsession in eastern religions and the occult, converting to Buddhism, while also keeping his Lutheran faith. Only natural for a man who claimed to carry blood of Batu Khan, grandson of the great Genghis Khan!

It was when he served in Siberia, surrounded by nomadic peoples, that he truly adopted the personality that would characterize him throughout the remaining years of his life in our world. An excellent horseman, shooting with ease from horseback and perhaps even more at ease with a sword, he was also a man of little discipline, drinking heavily and getting into fights more often than not, which earned him the long scar of a sword across his face. Obsessed with the lifestyle and ways of the people who lived by the horse, he sought to fight for Mongolian independence, but was unable to before serving in the First World War, where he served illustriously on the eastern front and in the Caucasus, a soldier with truly no fear of death.

When the Russian Civil War broke out, Ungern-Sternberg swore allegiance to the Romanovs, fighting revolutionaries, particularly of the red variety, in the far east, with a cavalry force made up not only of Russians and various nomadic horsemen, but also Europeans and even Japanese mercenaries, all known for their brutality with their enemies; his fortress literally filling with the bones of his enemies, executed by man who was later himself executed when he earned the Baron's distrust. With a staunch ideology of pan-monarchism, the "Bloody Baron" decided on the major action of restoring Mongolia's independence from Chinese rule, making connections with various other warlords in the region, going as far as marrying a Manchurian princess, though one he never spent much time with, whether it be from an aversion to women or a simple distaste at settling down.

In 1921, Ungern-Sternberg's Asiatic Cavalry crossed into Mongolia and after intense, brutal fighting and pillaging, all befitting a man who stylized himself as a Mongol warlord, the country became independent once more, under the Bogd Kahn. Named a khan himself, Roman killed many dissidents in the country, before setting his eyes on the Siberian lands of Soviet Russia. Convinced that people would rise up to join him if he went to fight the Bolsheviks, he rode out of Mongolia outgunned and outnumbered by the Red Army, where he was captured after months of a failing campaign, bleeding men as his cavalry was faced with armored cars, airplanes and all sorts of heavy weaponry, leading to his capture in August. After being afforded a trial for show, he was sent in the night to be executed by firing squad, never to be heard from again…

The Soviets declared his death and throughout Mongolia, his death was mourned, but in the night, though gunshots rang out, who knows what may have really happened. In a man so surrounded by myth and rumor, could death even be known by him?

Aaand we're closed for now.

Thank you everyone who applied, we got a great group to start. Any new applicants may be considered for introduction after the prologue.

We currently have an open spot on the roster, and still in the prologue stage, so plenty of time to introduce a new character!
