Saving Each Other

"I can tell you're thrilled about this." From the little he knew about her past he didn't really blame her. He held the papers out to her. "I don't blame you for your hesitation. I am hoping this will help you relax and not stress so much. There are a couple of government programs that you can use. But I would look at the ones through the companies themselves first. I don't know what you qualify for so I printed everything."

Teddi took the papers. She set the government programs aside not even looking at them. She looked through the other ones with interest though. Her social worker hadn't been one to help her find stuff that was useful and no guidance consoler and ever really helped her either. She'd done all her college research on her own and hadn't even thought there were programs to help her.
Teddi put aside two other papers with programs she didn't think she qualified for put folded up the others and put them into her backpack. She'd go to the financial help office on the weekend and work on signing up for some of these programs. If needed she'd walk or take the bus into town to sign up for them and she could check out the local shelters and free clinics.
"Thanks, Griffin, this helps a lot...I um...I didn't know they had non-government programs to help." she told Griffin smiling at him.

"Companies started offering programs to help those that cant afford their drugs a couple of years ago. They get some kind of tax break from it or something. I hope it eases your stress. I don't want you to flunk out just because you are more worried about your health then your assignments." Griffin explained as he turned his attention make to his review. He hoped that he hadn't offended her. He hoped that she qualified for atleast one of the programs. He wanted to help her and he didn't have any idea what else he could do.

Teddi nodded. She hoped she didn't flunk out either, college was her opportunity to prove everyone wrong about her being an utter failure. She smiled at Griffin,
"Thanks." she repeated. She glanced at the clock an stood up,
"I'm going to the gym." she said thought it was kinda of needless. Griffin didn't need to know where she was going, probably didn't really care either. Teddi grabbed her gym bag and slung her supply bag across her bag, she wasn't forgetting it this time. Teddi left and headed off to the gym. She thought maybe she'd do some running and weights today, do a longer work out without the pool. After all swim team had started up and she though she remembered they were practicing today.

Griffin nodded. He didn't think she needed to work out but maybe it was a health thing. If it was something she had to do for her condition then he could understand her spending the time on it but he worried that she was trying to do too much. She was working, going to school, and exercising. He worried that she would run out of energy someday. But he really had no right to tell her to take some time for herself. Not when he didn't intend to do the same. He turned his focus back to his notes. He wanted to get through them atleast once tonight.

Teddi came back four hours later. She had showered down there so she wasn't sweaty anymore. As soon as she came in she dropped her stuff in her side of the closet. She'd brought back some food from the cafeteria for dinner.
"Brought back two burgers if you want one." she told Griffin. She put one of the take out containers on Griffin's desk and sat down at her own. She opened it up and started to eat as she studied. She had a burger and fries also because after her work out she was hungry. She hunched over her notes and textbooks quietly, she had a good amount of material to read tonight and she didn't want to be up too late.

"Thank you that was generous of you." Griffin told her. He was surprised by her actions. For someone so worried about money she had been very generous to him. He ate the hamburger quickly. He was used to have little time to eat. He studied his notes until it started getting late. He looked at the clock and was surprised to discover that it was nearly ten. He stood to his feet and went into his bathroom. He avoided looking in the mirror as he stripped. He showered and then shaved. Shaving without looking in the mirror was hard but he had been doing it for years.

Teddi shrugged. It wasn't really an expense her 'scholarship' covered a certain amount of meals she'd gotten a combo meal and paid a couple extra bucks for an extra burger. She figured it was the least she could do since Griffin sacrifices his time for her even when she didn't even ask.
While he was gone Teddi changed into her pajamas which were the same boxers and t-short she wore since she hit here. She'd do laundry sometime next week and switch her pajamas out tomorrow night. Bteddi finished her burger and went to brush her teeth.

Once Griffin was ready for bed he knocked on the door the way Teddi did. He figured she would probably be in her bathroom but he didn't want to take any chances. The had been getting along so well. He wanted to respect her privacy. it was awkward enough sharing space with someone of the opposite sex. While he waited for her ok he went over the notes he could remember. It was good to do it without the actual notes. It was more like a test then. He wasn't a good tested so it was good idea to practice.

Teddi walked back after brushing her teeth and seeing Griffin was waiting outside she opened the door and walked in. He probably thought she was changing inside or something, leaving the door open Teddi put away her toiletries and went back to her desk. She knew it was late, but she wanted to get some more studying in before she went to bed. She sat down at her desk and went back to reading her textbooks.

"Don't exhaust yourself Teddi." Griffin warned as he double checked to make sure he had everything in his bag for the next day. He worried that she was going to overdo things. School, work, exercise was a lot for one young healthy girl. He couldn't imagine it being good for one with health problems. But he didn't know what she was used to. This could be her normal routine rather then a new one.

Teddi nodded. She should get some sleep, bad sleep schedules could mess with her body even more than her diabetes already did. She nodded again,
"Yeah...thanks." she muttered. She packed her backpack for tomorrow morning and climbed up into her bed. Teddi lay down and pulled her blanket up over her, she realized she didn't really know much about her roommate...that probably was normal since they hadn't known each other long right? She had never really had friends before so she wasn't sure how this was supposed to work...or if Griffin was her friend.
Teddi stared at the ceiling as she thought about that.

Griffin nodded. He liked Teddi. She was the closet thing to a friend he had had. His father refused to allow him to have friend when he was growing up. Every time he had tried his father had found out and scared the kid awy. All to keep his secret safe. Well he wasn't in his father's house anymore so he could make friends if he wanted to. The problem was that he wasn't sure how to nymore. After awhile he drifted off into a restless sleep.

Teddi didn't get to sleep quickly. She lay in be quietly trying to figure out how you got to know a person better without being intrusive while listening to Griffin's breathing. She was confused, how did you make a friendship 'official'? How did you make a friendship deeper? What exactly were friends suppoed to do together? She frowned trying to think of the answers to these and many more questions before drifting off to sleep sometime after mid-night.

Griffin spent a restless night trying to sleep. When his alarm went off he got up and turned it off. He was more tired this morning then he had been one other morning since arriving at college. He slowly made his way to the bathroom. He splashed his face with cold water until he felt half awake. Then he shaved. He grumbled under his breath when he realized that he hadn't grabbed clean clothes to get dressed in. He knocked on the door to let Teddi know that he was coming back into the main room.

Teddi woke up and rubbed her eyes, each day she'd been getting progressively more tired when she woke up in the morning. She climbed down and after Griffin left she pulled on some jeans and a black v-neck t-shirt that had bright yellow smiley face on it. It was a girl's shirt that she'd had for a while so the smiley face with a little faded and the form didn't fit her shape well because it wasn't made for women. She tied the same plaid shirt she'd worn yesterday around her waist.
"Come in." she called out when she heard a knock. She grabbed her toiletries and stepped out of the room to go to the bathroom.

Griffin opened the door when Teddi gave him the all clear. He was alittle disappointed that she was gone but he wasn't surprised. She had to get ready for school too. He was hoping that they would find time to talk but he didn't know when they could do so. They were both trying to do a lot at once.

Teddi came back in a few minutes after having brushed her teeth and dine her hair. She glanced at the time, they had a nice amount of time until at least her first class so she could have a leisurely breakfast.
Teddi knocked gently on the door, even though Griffin was already dressed she didn't want to run into anything awkward.

(sorry. Thought I posted)

"It's safe Teddi." Griffin called out. He was gathering his stuff for the day. He looked up when she re-entered the room. "It's supposed to be nice today. Would you like me to walk with you?" He thought walking together would give them a chance to talk. What they would talk about he had no idea. But he wanted to try to get to know her. She was the closet thing to a friend he had and they were going to be sharing a space for a year. They might as well get to know alittle about one another.

Teddi came in and packed her school supplies. She had a full day today with classes and work as a janitor, but that didn't start until after breakfast. She smiled at Griffin when he offered to walk with her,
"Yeah, that'd be great." she responded eagerly. Teddi checked her supplies and made sure she had enough insulin and snacks for the day. She tied her gray hoodie which was now dry around her waist and slung her bag up onto her back. Teddi hen stood by the door and waited for Griffin to be ready. She did feel hungry, she'd had quite a work out last night and had only eaten a couple snacks for her blood sugar afterwards so she was ready for breakfast.
