Saving Each Other

Griffin gave Teddi a small smile and shook his head. "No Teddi. Riding a motorcycle is something that you either you like or you don't. It's clear you don't. It's alright. I understand. It's not a big deal." He took his helmet off and put it on the handlebar. Then he headed towards the cafeteria. He turned back to her to make sure that she was behind him. He didn't want her to think that he was mad at her. While he was disappointed he wasn't upset.

Teddi didn't really know how to feel. The motorcycle ride hadn't been her cup of tea, but she didn't want to ruin her chances at bonding with her roommate.
Teddi didn't want a hot breakfast. She showed her ID at the front and then proceeded to get herself a small bowl of cereal, some fruit, and a little milk.
Teddi went and sat down and started to eat her breakfast.

Griffin wasn't as hungry as he had been when they left the dorm. He didn't blame Teddi for not liking the bike ride but he was disappointed that she hadn't liked it. He had been hoping it would be another thing they could share. But it looked like it wouldn't be. He would have to try to find something else. He took a couple of eggs, bacon, and some milk. He showed his ID and then followed Teddi to a table. He was comfortable with her so he didn't want to bother with anyone else.

Teddi ate her food and looked over her schedule. She had two morning classes and afternoon class and no work that had to be done. She probably would stop by the gift shop or something. See if she could pick up some spending money by working extra there on days she didn't have work for her tuition pay.
Teddi had never been given anything...even working hard hasn't helped when her money was confiscated by her foster parents. She'd managed to hide enough pay to get some initial school supplies, the application, and the transportation up here, but now she was flat broke and didn't like it. She was an adult now and needed an emergency fund, something she could use of things went wrong at the school or something like that.

Griffin eat and watched Teddi. He was curious about what she was doing. She seemed to be looking at her schedule. He wanted to ask why but he didn't want to intrude. He knew what his schedule was. He had two classes this morning and then one in the afternoon. Then he was due at the library. He had asked for as many hours at the library as possible. He would study as much as he could while he worked. Once his hours at the library were done he would go home to study. He couldn't afford to get low grade. His scholarship required that he get at least Bs in all his classes. Which meant he would be spending a lot of time studying.

Teddi stared at her food as she ate. She was trying to figure out a good balance. To keep the working scholarship she had to get at least Bs which might be hard for her. She also needed an emergency fund in case anything went bad she didn't wa t to be on the streets homeless, penniless, and jobless because she knew she had no safety net...no one that was willing to help her if times got rough.
Teddi pulled out her little calendar book and started to write down her schedule in that she tapped her chin with her pencil as she thought.

Griffin wasn't worried about being homeless or jobless. He knew there were worse things. He had skills that he could use to support himself if he needed. He might never be rich but he would survive. That was what he had always done. He wasn't going to change that now. But he wanted to better his life. College was his one chance to make something of himself. He needed to prove to that his father was wrong about him. "You look deep in thought. Anything I can help with?"

"I'm just...uh trying to be prepared. I can't afford to have nothing in the bank." Teddi explained. She wished she wasn't diabetic. It was hard because she would always have to budget around her diabetes supplies in case she couldn't get insurance or something went wrong. She also needed to make sure she had food for her blood sugars.
Teddi ran her hand through her hair. She should start planning her emergency budget. She needed to know how much money she wanted in general and how much would be her bottom line to survive.
Teddi glanced at the time as she we out some notes down on her calendar.

Griffin shrugged. "I don't have an medical needs like you do but I have nothing in the bank. There are always ways to get money if I need it. There is no sense in worrying about it. Stressing yourself out isn't going to really help anything." He refused to stress over things that were outside his control. He had been without money before he could be without money again. His scholarship covered room, books, and three meals as long as he completed his hours and kept a B average. So that was where his focus was going to be.

Teddi just nodded as she put her stuff away. Of course he didn't understand her planning. He didn't know what it was like to have a condition that would kill you without the proper supplies. She wished she could be as easy and stress free with money managing like Griffin was but she couldn't. She could trust trust she could pick up some insulin and needles somewhere of she needed it.
Teddi had had troubles getting insulin in the past. Mostly in some bad foster homes where they either took it away from her or never got any with her social check. She hated it. She hated the feeling when her blood sugar dropped dangerously low. It caused her to not be able to think straight, she'd have seizures, she sweat, throw up, and various other nasty things including death.
Teddi didn't say any of this though. She kept her thoughts to herself and finished eating.
"Gotta get to class. See ya." She said cheerfully as she got up and cleared her spot.

Griffin sighed. That hadn't gone well. He had tried to be reassuring but apparently he sucked at it. He knew that Teddi had to be more cautious about money then other people. But stressing about it couldn't be healthy. There were programs out there that could help her. Unless she was one of those people who refused to ask for help. Maybe he could look up a couple of programs this afternoon when he was at the library. He wanted to help her and this was the only way he could see to do it right now. He cleaned up his mess and gathered his school stuff then headed to his first class of the day.

Teddi sat through her classes and took meticulous notes. She had a free period after her last morning class and lunch so she stopped by the gift shop to see if she could pick up a few extra hours there to earn some money. They told her to come back after her last class that day and she could start her first shift.
Teddi hurried to lunch, her last class was right after lunch so she wanted to make sure she was there before the lines started to get long. She got herself a panini with spinach, tomatoes, mozzarella, and some chicken on it. She also grabbed some fruit and a water. Going to the table she always went to she sat down and started to eat as she looked over her class assignments.

Griffin focused on his classes. He took notes to make sure he would be able to remember exactly what happened in class. He had scheduled himself so that the only free period he had was lunch. He wanted to get as many classes done at once as he could. He thought about going to going to lunch but he was sure that Teddi was still upset about earlier so he decided to skip lunch. He decided to go to the library to do the research he wanted to do for her. Maybe if he found something that could ease her worries she would forgive him.

Teddi wondered where Griffin was when he didn't show up for lunch which made her wonder if she'd screwed up. Maybe she'd gotten him upset this morning. Maybe he thought she was mad at him...she hoped that wasn't it. Teddi didn't want people to think she was upset with them.
Teddi got up after lunch and went to her last class of the day. She wasn't sure how she'd balance work and school or of she could do it well but she hoped she could.

Griffin spent the lunch hour doing research to ease Teddi's stress. College was hard enough without the added burden of health problems. He wrote down a couple of programs he thought she might qualify for. When the lunch period was done he headed to his next class. And then the library to work. he was hoping he would see Teddi when he got to the dorm that evening. He was limping pretty badly by the time his shift at the library was done. He slowly made his way to his bike and headed back to the dorm.

The day had felt long to Teddi. She'd gone to her afternoon class and then had gone to start work. Teddi knew she wasn't having the 'college experience'. She did no extra circulars except work and didn't really socialize either. She'd thought about socializing but didn't like forcing herself in people and no one had really approached her yet exc pt for Griffin.
Teddi climbed the stairs to their floor and went to her dorm. She knocked waiting for Griffin to answer. She had a little homework, not much she was still just doing the introductory phase in most of her classes. She planned on going to the gym tonight because she hadn't last night.

"Come in." Griffin called. He was sitting at his desk going over his notes. While he didn't have much homework He wanted to make sure that he understood everything that had been covered that day. He couldn't take the chance that he would fall behind because he didn't understand something. The first week would be pretty laid back but after that they would only get harder. He needed to stay ahead if he could. He didn't know how much study time he would have.

Teddi came in and plopped down at the other desk. She opened her backpack up and popped her notebooks onto the scratched wooden surface.
"How was your day?" She asked quietly. Standing up and shutting the door of the dorm. She started to look through her notes as she waited for his response.
She pulled out her textbooks any assignments she had were just to read the first chapter or couple chapters of some of her text books.

"It wasn't too bad. I did some research for you. I thought it might help ease your stress." Griffin explained. He moved things around until he found the papers that he had printed out. He hoped that they would help. She seemed so worried that she would end up on the streets and not able to take the medication that she needed. He want to ease that worry if he could. He wanted to make sure that she was alright. He wanted to give her the best chance to have the life that she wanted.

"What kind of research?" Teddi asked quietly spinning her office chair to face him. She watched him rearrange his papers to find something.
Teddi only really knew about government 'help' or finances and medicine. Though she wasn't one to believe in conspiracy theories or anything like that Teddi didn't trust the government. She'd experienced as much of their 'help' as she could handle in the foster system and didn't see how anything could be well done or good if it came from a bunch of bureaucrats who didn't understand what it was like to walk in her shoes.
Teddi waited to see what Griffin had to offer though.
