With Ervin joining her for the ride, Midna concentrated hard on keeping them moving, a small trail of shimmering light left in their wake before fading as they zoomed through the snow. Her 'driving' was careful and thought-out, with precise swerves and swivels as needed to avoid any otherwise potential obstacles. It came to her with practiced ease, but she left the picking off of threats to Ervin while she kept her eyes on the 'road'. Soon enough, they were safely out of range. At which point? A swift, steady landing was made, with Midna immediately turning her eyes to the massive Grimm attempting to feast on Angus. Much to Midna's relief, it looked like all the thing was eating was bullets, up until the boy was flung away. There was only a brief moment of making sure he was still breathing at the very least before she steeled up, clutching Lunar Eclipse tighter in her hands as she began to run.

But not after the trail.

Right at the beast, zigzagging as she ran along, snow whipped up in her wake and cloak fluttering in the harsh wind behind her. With a burst of determination, she reverted her weapon to it's flamethrower form, jumping into the air and forming herself a ride once again where she began unleashing flame onto the beastly Grimm while making sure to keep her aim off of any future classmates that might be around. After a few bursts, the fire ceased, the weapon changing in favor of becoming her preferred sickles once again. One of which was fired off at the beast in the form of a bladed hookshot. And thus, she let her moonbeams vanish, aiming to drop down and leave a tear in the creature with her other sickle.

Ervin thought quickly, trying to figure out a good way to distract that worm... He knew he couldn't take it on on his own, but on the other hand, if he could animate something big enough, it might cause the ground to shake in a manner that would attract the creature's attention.

Carefully, he tried to look around for a big boulder to animated, intending to make it grow arms and legs so it could begin stomping and pounding the ground, in an effort to distract the beast under the ground. However, regardless of if this part of his plan worked, he took a bit of a risk and moved away from the trail, firing upon the creature in the ground at every opportunity he could get with his twin furies. He knew he could loop back to the trail once this creature was well distracted enough, and so... He figured he would try and draw it's attention elsewhere for now.
Ella's high jump reached its apex just as the worm and Angus collided. By the time the other hunter in training was thrown back, she landed with in a spray of white as her metallic legs kicked up a cloud of the loose snow. She took a breath and cracked her neck, before she raised her rifle towards the far off combat between hunter and grimm.

Her short sprint hadn't closed all that much distance, but her eyes were aglow again as she knelt down into the snow to conceal herself and turned the dial on Keening's power source up to the max. Target above ground, all allies- no, but at least all non grimm -outside of the immediate range. Ella had never been and likely never would be a warrior. She didn't have the aura or courage to wade into the endless hordes of grimm that threatened humanity and come out unscathed like her would-be classmates.

But what she was, however, was a hunter in the old sense. There were foul things in the world that were a danger without numbers, through terrible size, frightening strength, or aura twisted to the use of oppression and violence. And be it grimm or man, Ella was very good at killing monsters.

She held her breath, aligned her shot just above the thresher, and pulled the trigger at the same time she started to tilt the rifle downward

The beam split the air and then hopefully beast with a deafening howl as the laser swung downward to slice through the beast like a sword that reached across the valley. If it all worked out, the beam would hopefully slice straight through the width of the beast, decapitating it
She didn't really think much of what she could dish out would do anything to the monster, but it was all she could think of. Rachel's semblance began to manifest - pale violet strands appeared and started to strain against the Grimm, break, and reform. She really had no idea how much if any it slowed it down.

Rachel followed up with Lilac Lash, launching a salvo of rockets followed by a strike or two with the whip itself, but every strike was designed as much to put the creature off balance than anything else.

@Ringmaster @ whomever
David was already at a high vantage point when he had seen the monster. He paused and he looked at the monster. After a few minutes, he unnotched his arrow. He aimed it for the monster. God, this was a very dangerous plan to do in the slightest and he hoped it worked.

"ROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAARRRRRR!!!"

The Ice Wyrm howled into the sky, as weapons barraged against it, the spines rippling and suddenly glowing as they turned blue.

Right before it fired what seemed to be a massive influx of blue light, producing ice in massive amounts around the field, intersecting with the beam of Elle as well as moving towards the would-be Hunters and Huntresses.

Though not enough to evade completely as a howl echoed out from behind the crumbling ice and the flicker of a tail dissipating as the ground shook.

The air went still....And Angus sniffed the air, from his point of view as he seemed to listen carefully before lowering his weapons.

"Gone."

It certainly seemed to be. The barrage seemed to have scared it away, or at least sent it flying to lick its wounds for now. What interested him the most though was the spines on that creature....Unlike any Grimm he had seen as he said quietly.

"Dust."

Another ice wall creaked and collapsed. From the skies, something observed the would-be hunters and huntresses, the Drone catching everything and their reactions before flying off. What came next was a number of strange things, mostly Grimm but none on the scale as before and so they didn't have much trouble. The supplies themselves, a mere four miles from their position.

Untouched in the middle of what seemed like a massacre in the woods, as they laid upon a wagon.

With a single body laying there in the snow, torn in half.

Hmm... Dust, huh? Perhaps that Grimm creature wasn't entirely formed by natural means, which presented the possibility that someone else had created this creature. It didn't help that he managed to spot a drone once the ice crumbled around them just before it flew away. Was this all just some test? All in all, he decided to focus more on the task at hand, noticing the wagon nearby. Though, his attention was quickly captured by the body that lay there in the snow.

With some carefull consideration, he decided to investigate the body, in an attempt to figure out what exactly had happened in this place. It was a bit hard to tell if this was all some elaborate hoax, or if they were dealing with very real threats, perhaps both, if this was some test for Valhalla Academy. In either case, it would be ideal to know what they might still be up against, as it all felt a little too easy for his liking. If a Grimm creature of the size he had seen truly did run loose in this area, then it was likely there were plenty more like it prowling the area.

So the glowing spines. That was new, and the first sign that something was off about this creature. The hairs on the back of Midna's neck stood on end, her eyes briefly widening as she tensed and readied herself to move, jumping off of the creature and into the snow. Rightfully so, because next came the mass of blue light, pouring out all around her and causing ice to be spewed about. With not even a single curse, she leapt to the side, attempting to get better footing before taking off in a slippy-slidey run, leaping into the air halfway through. She let herself fall most of the way, cloak fluttering and lifting in the endeavor before she landed in a 'superhero' fashion. Because Deadpool reference.

With a single, visible shudder, she finally righted herself. A glance over her shoulder was spared, scrutinizing the snow for any sign of the creature rearing it's head once again. But there was nothing. Nothing but an eerie, cold silence, leaving her to briefly consider just what had conspired mere moments ago. The glowing, the flash... None of it was natural. It was almost akin to a display made by one of the few who dared to use raw Dust on themselves alone.

But that couldn't be right.

She retraced the events in her mind, thinking over what could possibly have bore this result. But there was nothing, and it seemed that boy from the crater from earlier had concluded the use of Dust, himself. That begged the question- who had modified the creature? Midna doubted the White Fang would go to such lengths, but the White Hand... Or perhaps whoever was behind the attack on the village. And if so, just who were those people? She had plenty of time to think about this as she and the others fought off the Grimm before continuing onward. What they found was less than appealing.

It was hard to tell just when the person had died, what with how cold it was from the snow and the like. But what wasn't hard to figure out was who was likely responsible. Those bandits they'd run into? Likely were much more. For a moment, she fell behind the rest of her group, kneeling momentarily to the snow. To most, it'd likely seem as though she were merely pausing to catch her breath. But rather, she stayed with eyes closed, sending a small prayer for the fallen figure. But as she rose and continued forward, her mind was clear, and while she didn't choose to disturb the body? She contributed her own question. The only one that really mattered, for the moment, in her opinion. And thankfully, a simple one.

"Faunus?"

"Faunus?"
Any ambush that might have happened, was long since gone. Tracks of Grimm and shell casings telling a story of a desperate fight around the body and area. Angus would be staring with a critical glance as the body was examined. No, it wasn't a Faunus...But there was a white grimm mask partway in the snow. A moment later, Angus spoke aloud.

"Supplies look good. Engine not smashed. Can drive."

It'd get them back faster as he peered out in the distance the ambushed folk seemed to be going and frowned.

"....Northwest. Anyone know what lies there?"

1d4 roll.

1= That's the Moria Dust Mines. Long since abandoned, after Grimm were discovered to be in large numbers there.

2= Moria Dust Mines. There were trouble with Grimm, but also with the conditions for the workers. Faunus were treated akin to slaves and there was a riot.

3=Moria Dust Mines. There was a riot concerning working conditions, pre-Valhalla and it nearly dissolved into Civil War, before the Grimm forced folk to work together to escape.

4= Moria Dust Mines. The Faunus workers tried to protest their working conditions, and in retaliation the White Hand began fear mongering. Lynchings, the works. The Faunus retaliated with brutal reprisals and it almost ended in a civil war in the kingdom, when the Grimm appeared and they worked together. Its been abandoned for years, because of the Grimm.

Chapter 1: Invasion of the Ice Giants.

Miss_Gard.jpg

The armored woman waiting for the batch of students this year was at once, an intimidating and welcoming figure. Her smile to those who passed through bespoke her warmth, the eyepatch spoke of loss. To each, she welcomed by name and kindly though notably, their numbers were few as they got off the airship dock, provided when the party returned to the village(now well fortified, thanks to those who stayed behind and those who came in late).

Finally however, they would all be in the courtyard...All sixteen of them, which might have prompted confusion as the sound of a heavy stick thumping echoed and with a massive wolf by his side, the students got their first glimpse of Kringle as he leaned upon a wooden staff.

He was a bear in stature and build. His shoulders were so broadly proportioned that he made younger men look slender in comparison, despite his age. His forearms were nearly the size of his biceps, and he had the kind of thick neck that you see only in power lifters. There were scars all over his hands, and more on his face, all of them faded away to ancient white lines, each with a tale of their own. He wore a coat of mail openly and it was dull in coloration, the sort of mail one wears for war and not for show.

Over the mail he wore a long, open coat of scarlet, trimmed in white fur. It was held in with a wide black leather belt. He had such a barrel of a chest that even a modest bit of stomach was a considerable mass on his huge frame. His gloves were made of black leather trimmed with more white fur, and they were tucked through the belt, right next to the very plain and functional hilt of an unadorned broadsword. His hair was short, white, and shining clean, and his white beard fell over his chest like the white breaker of a wave. His eyes were clean, winter sky blue.

The courtyard itself was massive, its only decoration a great bonfire in a brazier which provided the warmth as he looked at all and spoke.

"Future Hunters and Huntresses of Erebor, welcome to Valhalla. Formed by a dream I had, of a kingdom strong in word and deed. Though our kingdom of Erebor is new, we survive and we continue to do all we can...But that is not the only reason, important as it is. Outside, the world is growing dark."

He took on a stern expression as he paced, leaning on the staff as the woman watched him keenly. The wolf whined low in its throat as it stared at its master.

"I will not coddle or conceal the facts from any of you- To have come here, tells me more about your spirit then anything. Grimm do not simply appear as the monsters we know, but in the hearts of people who are too consumed by them. It is these Grimm, we must stop as well if we are ever to not only survive, but to grow as one people. Faunus, Human....We are all, people with a soul and dignity that no one must trample. So that is my goal. I will teach you all I know, and hopefully you will take it to heart. I will teach you of the Grimm, regale you with the history of our world and do my best to educate you here."

He tapped the side of his head, before lowering it to tap over his heart.

"...And here. Me and my staff, whom I hope you will respect as they share their own knowledge. But now to tacks of brass!"

He thumped his stick and grinned.

"Normally, we have great ceremony to determine team, but seeing how you handled yourself in emergencies, I think we can skip for tomorrow."

He winked and laughed in a jolly manner as he said throwing up a hand.

"So come inside! There is feast prepared and hot baths with warm beds! You will find team in morning ceremony! Hohohohohohohoho!"

And with a wave of his hand, he led the way. The halls of stone and torchlight throwing up a more primal mood, though it wasn't till they entered the great hall that a blast of warmth and food wafted in their direction. Pine trees, decorated stood at the sides, glittering in many colors like starlight and the food itself would have been a welcome sight.

28282-thanksgiving-meal-feast-dinner.1200w.tn.jpg

Though the hall was built for much more folk, it was clear there weren't too many. At the same table, the teachers would be eating with the students, presided over by Kringle whose laugh was warm and his manner jolly, as he played host. Two new faces would likewise be seated, one of them another armored young woman, with white hair tied in a braided bun as she sat down. A shield with a snarling lions face placed to the side. The other bore a passing resemblance to Angus, clad in black and pale. Though his eyes were red to his yellow as they sat down, the latter helping the former.

Altogether, it was a strange dinner party but after the cold, a welcome one. And to top it all off....

Many likely thought little of Kringle's words. Perhaps even their whole experience with the thieves, the happenings possibly falling to the back of their minds'. After all, this was a celebration. Midna, however, hardly found herself to be in the celebrating mood. In fact, she seemed rather distant, preferring to shy away from the festivities. Her mind was set on their journey, and what all had transpired during it. Who were the people that had raided the village, and what did they want? What had they taken that was so important to them? Obviously it wasn't the supplies, or they wouldn't have left them behind. And then, of course, there was the matter her brother.

It all weighed heavily on her mind as the cloaked mistress sighed and closed her eyes, leaning against the wall in silence. She'd leave the partying to the professionals. She was perfectly fine sitting this out and sticking to the more quiet side of things.

And then, of course, there was the other Faunus. A smile on her face that shone bright enough to put the sun itself to shame, she quite literally skipped through the door, laughing cheerfully all the while. "We made it! Wow, that was totally amazing! I can't believe I just fought with a team for the first time... Oh, and, well, met other people for the first time," she added, thoughtfully. "Oh, but man this is exciting!" she concluded, clapping her hands together and bouncing up and down. Spinning on her heel, she turned that smiling face to the rest of the group. "Aren't you all just super excited? I just can't wait to figure out who our partners will be!"

As though an idea had popped into her head, she lit up like a light bulb. "Oh! Maybe we'll be partners, Lavi! Wouldn't that just be the coolest?!"

Ella stood well back from the speech as she half listened, lost in thought. The fact that the body had been real was troubling to say the least. Not because it was a dead body in and of itself, she'd gotten used to those long ago. But the White Fang hadn't been active in this area at all in the last ten years, not since the school was erected. Too dangerous and not worth the trouble, or so was said by her former superiors. She'd been half suspicious that the whole 'emergency' had been a test, and that the body and attack was all faked to see how the students reacted. But unless Valhalla was even more extreme in its methods than the whispers of rumors and tall tales of graduates implied, that obviously wasn't the case.

She bit her lip and huffed. Too messy. Way too messy.

When the group made for the feast hall, she stayed where she was. Being crammed in a room with that many people and nowhere to hide... just... no. She instead quietly slipped off for the halls of the school itself to try and familiarize herself with it. If the attack in Geat was any indication, their time here was going to be anything was peaceful, and she saw no reason not to be prepared if that lack of peace spilled into Valhalla itself.

----------------------------------------------

Minori on the other hand, had absolutely zero intention of being an anti-social brat like a certain cyborg faunus :T

They listened attentively to Kringle's speech, and found it well spirited, if a bit grim for what was supposed to be a celebration. But... perhaps it was worthy of such, given how their initiation had been spent. They let that concern pass for the moment once the food was laid out and made no attempts to hide their hunger as they licked their lips at the sight. Sure, they'd had the far easier job of the initiates staying behind, but Minori had been far from idle while they'd been there. It wasn't as if they could fix Geat's problems in a day, but they did still have a sit down with the local sheriff to discuss what to do in future attacks, a map of the town laid out and marked with choke points, defensible positions, and what wasn't worth defending in dire circumstances. It felt... good, to put their father's training to use again.

...

But such reminiscence were for other days. For now, there was food and future allies, both far more important in terms of the strength for things to come tomorrow and beyond. Which was why Minori slid into a seat near the two they'd yet to meet and offered them a smile and a nod before they took a greedy mouthful of turkey leg and chewed for a few moments. Eventually their mouth was finally free to ask.

"You two weren't at the village till much later, I didn't catch your names. Minori Pendragon, of Blackwood."

A few of the points made earned respectful nods, but only this got her to break her posture. Throwing her head back, she laughed heartily. "Yes! You read my mind as well as my belly. I hunger for a proper feast. A mighty meal for mighty warriors!" Without further adieu, she strode on behind him, a wide grin emerging at the sight of all the food just waiting for them. She herself immediately gravitated to the sizable turkey, barely able to keep herself from salivating.

And she immediately reached out and ripped one of the legs off, taking a large bite right out of it.

"...So. This is Valhalla." She whispered, her reaction more subdued and quiet. Aven really wasn't sure what to think about it, though she did agree the world was growing much too dark out there. Eyes roving over all the food...she casually walked up to one of the pies, picked it up whole and turned, intending to find a quiet corner.

"...Damn, Grandpa Kringle doesn't kid around. He's ready for a battle..."

Lavi smirked as they settled in for the feast, a hint of pride due to Kringle's approval of them all as she rolled up to the table.

"Definitely the right school for me and all of us!"
Celadon stood ramrod straight for much of the speech, paying rapt attention as fit her would be duty once she graduated. Rachel was... overwhelmed. She kind of just followed along. She didn't feel like a mighty warrior. She kept Lilac Lash at her side and her hands crossed across her chest as she moved to find a spot to sit. She liked the girl with the spider robot thing, so she looked to find a place near her.

Ervin, was okay too she supposed, and the girl who gave her a hug... They kinda worked sort of as a team already, the lot of them, so she wasn't as uncomfortable as she could have been. Still. it was with shy smiles and nods that she settled in and got a fairly modest portion of food for herself.

"You need to eat. You and your brother."

Angus_Black2.jpg

Angus had taken to hot chicken pies and brought them over, seeing her leave before adding.

"If worried, don't. Lots o' room here."

His comfort quota fulfilled, the stoic hunter walked back to the table, taking his seat as he frowned and ate quietly.

"A plezairr, Monsieur Minori! I am Katarina Nero! An' I apologize for my, 'ow you say? Ak-seent?"

She looked apologetic, moving a large, if delicate looking hand to rub the back of her head in mild shame.

"I 'ad learned my vords from a very, multilingual surrounding, as many traveled to my 'ome for 'elp. Is...Hard to keep to one, non?"

Upon closer inspection, she was a massive figure. Seven feel in height easily, making her chair seem small in comparison. But her manner was cheerful and her smile bright. In comparison, her companion seemed less prone to smiles. Almost like Angus, but without the sensation of the latter's anger simmering beneath the surface, more melancholic to his rage. He was polite though, as he bowed his head and spoke.

"And I, am Drake Scarlet. From the Lonely Mountain."

"You 'ave come a long way, Monsieur Drake." Observed Katarina. Drake responded with a nervous smile and shrug.

"It was the right choice. That said, I must say I was quite impressed with the level of fortifications when we arrived." He directed towards Minori as he added with professional interest. "Using the materials at hand, with the storm as well...We had a devil of a time, getting through it. Would have frozen if not for Katarina here. I couldn't imagine working out there."
David was excited that he had made it this far. He wondered what had happened to the rest of the trekkers who had opted to stay behind. Were they dead? Left behind? He didn't ponder it for too long, He looked over at the feast and ate. He was hungry beyond all belief and could ponder this and his team later.
Celadon stood ramrod straight for much of the speech, paying rapt attention as fit her would be duty once she graduated. His comfort quota fulfilled, the stoic hunter walked back to the table, taking his seat as he frowned and ate quietly.

A peculiar smell stuck out among the strong scent of food and, well, the generic smell of humans and Faunus alike. It was an unusual one to the Faunus, and she momentarily allowed herself to think on it and try to place it before noticing the boy from earlier approaching. For a moment or two, she watched him approach, figuring he'd turn last minute or ignore her altogether. It wouldn't be abnormal, and she wouldn't mind. It wasn't as though she were tripping over her own two feet wanting to converse with these others, anyways. But as he drew nearer and actually spoke to her, she found herself mildly surprised. Especially when he offered her what looked like some sort of pies.

"...!"

Silence was all that came at first as she looked the much taller figure down, unmoving. She stared for perhaps a minute before finally speaking. "Thanks, but I'm not-.." And then her eyes moved away from Angus, words trailing off as she spotted the boy who bore undeniable resemblance to her, chowing down like he hadn't eaten in months in a less than well-mannered fashion. Were this an anime, a large, animated sweatdrop likely would've been rolling down Midna's head right about then. It was good the kid was eating and all, but she could only hope that he wouldn't get sick. And she felt about ready to, with the rate he was consuming.

"...Nevermind. Thanks."

Well, seeing as she had somehow lost sight of Lavi, Mona brightened when she at least spotted Rachel was still nearby. With that typical wide grin, she more or less hopped into the seat next to the shier female, obviously teeming with excitement and joy. "Rachel, right?" she inquired. "Mind if I call you Rach? --Well, anyways! Who do you think your partner is gonna be? The people here seem totally nice, so I bet whoever it is will be great!" the Faunus added. Pausing in her speech, she shifted in her seat, settling in a more proper manner as opposed to sitting on the chair on her knees. Gratefully, she made herself a plate and began to dig in with surprisingly fair manners for someone as energetic and sporadic as she.

"Mm, sho, whaddya like to do, Rach?" she queried, admittedly speaking with some food left in her mouth.

She blinked and almost flinched at the rapid fire questions, then looked thoughtful. "Yes, and, I guess not. I don't know, but I hope they like me. And, read, mostly. Also, tinker with my weapon and... sing and write poetry?"

Rachel started eating politely then looked over at the faunus. "What do you like to do?" She replied, being utterly mortified that she'd actually forgotten the hyperactive faunus' name and was hoping it would come back to her or that someone would mention it so she wouldn't be embarrassed at having forgotten it.

Ervin frowned, trying to recall the details of what was ahead... And after a moment, he seemed to remember a few details he had heard of the place.

"Moria dust mines... Faunus work force was treated like slaves." He muttered.

Looks like he wasn't particularly comfortable with remembering that part, but the next part he remembered wasn't much better.

"Apparently there was a riot." He added.

Ervin Douglas (Valhalla Academy)

Ervin quietly listened to the opening speech, and well... Without much of a word, as soon as it was done, he moved over to grab a drink, and a moderate sized drumstick of some un-named bird, it looked suspiciously like a turkey leg. Evidently, he was hanging around on his own, not really particularly involving himself in the festivities, it was normal of him, but a little peculiar to others perhaps.

Speaking of peculiar, Ervin caught a glimpse of a gleaming sword, and a pair of light gray fox ears... Raising a brow a little, he swallowed the little bit of drumstick he had idly been chewing on as he blinked a few times. Wait a second, that couldn't be... His Aunt, could it? Was she... Teaching here in Valhalla? To say the least, Ervin was flabbergasted.

"SEEELFIIEEEE!!!!" Squealed the voice of Amber White.

She suddenly stood in front of the group of newcomers at Valhalla academy, with her scrool out, she was apparently preparing to take a photo with her scroll, though she was fumbling with the interface. Apparently Amber was supposed to be a teacher here at Valhalla academy, but evidently, judging by a few empty cups laying nearby, she might have gotten a bit buzzed.

In the background, Ervin might be seen rolling his eyes a little, and taking a sip from his own drink, this was far from what he had expected from a teacher at this academy, much less his own... Aunt? At any rate, fortunately for him, Amber seemed unaware of his presense for a moment, instead focusing on trying to take a picture with the rest of the group in the background somehow. For someone with a background such as her, of which only maybe the teachers knew about, her behavior was quite, puzzling, to those who didn't know her too well.
