Introduction

FhznIAh.png

The cyberrevolution has come and gone. Cloud interconnectivity and augmented reality are the norm. Quality of life has risen so much. Automation, robotics, virtual intelligences, drones, and more keep society flowing and healthy! Cyberware even offset the experienced effects of weather, and illness! Hubs of high tech activity within cities have even been dubbed 'Gentlelands'- crime free utopias for all who find their way in. All thanks to the works of wondrous family tech companies like Virtuatrix.

What a time to be alive.

The only people who decry the newfound integration are regularly shown on the news and talk shows being torn apart and mocked for the religious luddites, backwoods hicks, and conspiracy theorists that they obviously were. Extremists, who don't know what's good for them, obviously. Right?

Or so people thought.

The first reality glitch appeared over one of the oldest hubs of Virtuatrix technological deployment- a gash that stretched across the sky as far as the eye could see. People reported it as a bug in their augmented reality specs, and Virtuatrix went right to work on hotfixing it, assuring people that they had nothing to worry about and didn't need to disable their augments.

But people never listen perfectly.

Reports spread like wildfire, that the gash remained visible without augments, and panic set in. Those same luddites, theorists, and hicks saw the gash in the sky too, as further reports indicated. It became rapidly clear that this problem exceeded any hotfix that Virtuatrix could put out, yet the nature of the incident remained a mystery. Government forces took charge of the situation to monitor the gash, and ensure the protection of its citizenry, and absolved Virtuatrix of all involvement with it.

But now more gashes are etching across the sky, and growing. Some skies have been entirely distorted by these reality glitches, and that's only the beginning. Rumours are spreading of other manifestations, but both Virtuatrix and the government have denied the allegations.

"Monsters are not real."

You, however, now know better.

Your augments began acting up not too long ago. First, you couldn't disable them, but all at once they did so much more. Your sensory feeds glitched out leaving you in an abyss, completely devoid of all sensations. When your senses came back, your cyberware had changed in some unknown way, you couldn't explain how but you knew it intuitively. And you still couldn't just disable it.

Struggling to find answers, nothing came to you. Reports filed took ages, and no help came from the police either; they were 'too busy'. Nothing came to you...

That is, until they did.

Calling themselves Ambig, they were unlike any person you had met before. They stood before you, fancifully dressed with a strangeness- like a broken screen still trying to shine through the distortion- to their face that left it always obscured. They communicated unintelligibly but you understood- your augments seemed to translate them underneath everything.

They spoke around your questions, promising much but not delivering it right away. Communicated that they couldn't tell you everything there, that it wasn't safe, that others could be watching- though how, you do not know. Any objections they rejected and you could not make them leave...

And then, they grabbed you by the hand, and pulled you towards a portal- like the gash in the sky- but in the room with you. When you crossed to the other side, you were somewhere else.

It appeared as an office in an old building, though clearly wrong, and your cyberware couldn't give you your location- as far as you could tell, you were everywhere and nowhere at once. With you in the room with other normal people, and for each of the people there sat another of them just like Ambig, each finely dressed but with differing statures, yet never an inch of visible skin between the lot of them. Part of you figured you were going to get answers to your first questions here, but now?

Now there were so many more to ask.[/spoili]

Covenant

[spoili]
unknown.png

Centre the room had sat a boardroom table of sorts, and each of them, those like Ambig took a seat upon it, their distorted facial features growing as they encircled it, seeming to form a screen that warped around the table. In front of each of them, sat a chair, and you were in one such chair.

Flickering to life, the screens seemed to lose their cracked demeanour once rejoined and images began to pop up with clarity. So many lights, sounds, colours, and shapes- and you could not remember a lick of them when they faded away, an ill omen if ever there was one. But you did feel something that was quintessentially different- your augs were cold. Usually, even when disabled, they would at least be warm, but they were now almost as ice against and within you sending shivers down your spine.

Then, each Ambig began to communicate, though you were only able to understand the one that you were with personally. They communicated in a friendly manner, using body language that mirrored your own, and even referenced slang and injokes that were part of your personal lexicon as if wearing a saccharine veneer of friendliness, based upon a repository of information on you dredged up by unknown means.

And yet, they communicated with an inalienable truth. What they explained, made it quite clear that this was a reality, and what they wanted you to know despite all meaning held true.

You. You, of all people. You, and everyone else in this room.

You had been chosen.

You had been chosen, because things were about to get very, very bad.

While, it seemed that Ambig remained keen on keeping much of the specifics hushed as to who really chose you, and the meaning of their name became more and more clear to you- they kept everything Ambiguous. But further, the way they communicated, made it clear they considered themselves part of the group that had chosen you, and were simply the bridge to connect each of 'you', with all of their 'us'. Ambig, you, us. They seemed almost proud of the entendre in their name.

It was then that they revealed a little bit about who they were- the group they represented both as a herald and a member. The group had selectively chosen you, and the others, but you were chosen so you could choose in kind. Each of the group had themselves prepared to enter covenant with any or all of those chosen, but those chosen would choose their patronage personally instead of having it forced upon them.

Of the patrons, they spoke of the Far Gazer, the Dragon Slayer, the Unchained River, the Upright Star, the Rose Wreath, the Deepest Fog, and the Resplendent Flock, and of themselves, Ambig. They offered few answers to questions about them, and inquired if you had chosen your patron after any answer returned to you.

Of the Far Gazer, they communicated ideas that inspired, like a child learning of something new. Of someone making a wondrous discovery.

Of the Dragon Slayer, they communicated the unambiguous feeling of righteous fury, and vindictive anger, and the power to act.

Of the Unchained River, they communicated such feelings of sadness, but not defeat, or overcoming, of all things- hope.

Of the Upright Star, they communicated an air of confidence, an earned ego, security in oneself that defies others.

Of the Rose Wreath, they communicated in no uncertain terms an adoration, a love, that encompasses and comforts all around it.

Of the Deepest Fog, they communicated what should have been fear, but it remained overcome, a courage despite what was to come.

Of the Resplendent Flock, they communicated a feeling of true belonging, of camaraderie, of support and fellowship with one's peers.

Of themselves, they offered little more, explaining that you would have already had all you needed to know of them if you were to choose them.

It was simply now for you to choose. In your isolation, choose. It mattered not who the others chose, they said. It only mattered what you chose. Who you chose.

Choose your patron, and enter their covenant.

When you had done so, when all of you had done so, Ambig broke back apart into various individual Ambigs, each moving to one side of the room, congregating around the door. One at a time, they walked through the door, until your Ambig remained the last to leave.

They communicated to you approval at your choice, whatever it had been, and with a wave, they simply told you that it was now for you to find your way out of there- a test to prove that you were worth the covenants as they had hoped. They bowed, politely, and when they stood back up their screened face had cracked again. With that, they left through the door and closed it behind them, leaving you in the room with the others.

In the end, confusion had been the greatest parting gift from Ambig, and it offered you little in how to proceed. Remembering how you got into the room in the first place, how your augs couldn't seem to even tell where you were to begin with, even if you could figure a way out, where would it even take you to?

What was the point of any of this? You could only hope things would become more clear, instead of what for now felt pointlessly ambiguous.[/spoili]

Question, what's the absolute youngest a character can be?

I'm not sure what covenant my motoring orientated character would join... if any at all.

I'm not sure what covenant my motoring orientated character would join... if any at all.
Covenant mostly determines which emotional state is used to fuel the abilities you'll end up getting. To start, at least.

Huh. Forgot I had this account, but here I am. You got me, El. You got me.

Welp, done with my character sheet, hopefully it's okay!

Civilian Name: Holiday Maureen Miston
AR Avatar Name: Yule
Age: 16
Gender Identity: Genderfluid

Appearance: Holiday likes to dye their naturally black hair every so often and in outrageous colors, from fiery orange to pastel pink. Currently, their hair is a vivid shade of magenta. The hair is usually in a bob cut, reaching down to their chin. They have a small heart shaped face and a tiny mouth and nose, though their brown eyes are a little wide. Like with their hair, Holiday wears colored contacts that come in outrageous colors, their current favorite being lime green. They're thin and lanky, their arms and legs long for their body.
Avatar Description: As Yule, Holiday's avatar is gender neutral, with no naughty bits or a chest to speak of. From their head sprouts antlers that are draped with lichen and moss. Both their eyes and hair are pitch black, the eyes resembling a deer and the hair long, stringy, and tangled. Their skin is a sickly shade of green and is also has some patches of lichen here and there. They wear clothes made of deerskin, from their boots, to their pants, to the shirt and poncho they wear. Their height, weight, facial structure, and general body structure are the same as their real life appearance, bar the lack of naughty bits and chest.
Presentation: Holiday wears clothes haphazardly, none of it making sense. They could be wearing pajama pants and a girly tank top with a blue and fish covered jacket, or they could be wearing ripped jeans and a gray turtle neck covered by a bright pink sweater. It really doesn't matter, nor do they care what other people think about their style. They always stand tall and have a straight back as they walk, putting one foot in front of the other as silently as they can. However, they slouch a little when they sit down. They always locks eyes with a person when talking to them and never strays. Their tone of voice is usually soft and feminine, always gentle and caring without a trace of judgement. Sometimes they use gestures to get their point across. Overall, they don't really care what other people think of them, and won't turn their head to acknowledge the person who sees them "the weird girl."

Primary Motivation(s): Help others who are in trouble, taking care of the needy and those affected by the distortions in the sky
Secondary Motivation(s): Find out the cause of the gashes in the sky, make new friends
Obstacles & Obligations: Her mothers' concern for her safety, the need to help anyone and everyone

Covenant: Rose Wreath
Themes: Nature, deer
Aug Purpose: Quality of life

Utilities
- Wilderness survival
- Empathy for both people and animals
- Carving

Disadvantages
- Gets winded easily
- Relies too much on their auguments for her sight and hearing, will be rendered blind, deaf, and helpless if they short out

History & Background: Holiday was born to two mothers who used artificial means for one mother to bear the child. Honestly, Holiday thought it was normal to have two mothers and to sometimes be a boy rather than a girl until they became older to understand that it wasn't the case. Not that they minded of course, they didn't care what other people thought.
Everything was fairly normal for the family, both mothers worked their jobs while Holiday was sent to be babysat by a trusted friend of theirs. And as she grew older, she became a more understanding person that wanted to help others. She was bullied because of her family life and she made friends because of her family life. She figured out who was on her side or not during this tender growing up period.
As she grew older, she became a little rebellious of her mothers' demands. She wanted to shine in her own way, not listen to them when they said that she shouldn't be so ready to help others, for who knew if she would be used? Her parents grew worried as she became a bit of a hippy crossed with a punk and hung around with people who weren't really on their good list. But other than that, life was pretty much normal.
Then the giant rip in the sky appeared. As the news and media panicked over this looming threat, she didn't know what to make of it. It seemed fairly harmless, so they should be fine, right? But then more began to appear and her mothers became worried that something would happen to their daughter. And something did, her senses glitching out and leaving her in the dark before suddenly turning on all on their own. And then, she met them.

"How nice of you to share this lie with me!"

[BCOLOR=transparent]Civilian Name[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Ben Hastings[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]AR Avatar Name[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Plortz[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Age[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: 22[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Gender Identity[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Male[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Appearance[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Ben's hairstyle is his most often commented-on characteristic, followed by his fashion choices. He wears Chinese-themed clothing for most of his day-to-day life, mostly because it both feels natural but also because he genuinely wants to bring more people into wearing this style. He is 5'10" and has considerable muscle mass, but most of this was honed through his training as a trapeze artist.[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Avatar Description[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Plortz appears to others as a tiny (about 3 feet high) clown-themed android, with a bright red-and-yellow jester's hat, maroon jester's clothes trimmed in gold, a pair of orange belled shoes, and strangely, no honky nose. Has a rather cute-looking face too. Voice is that of a 6-year-old boy, with an audible lilt every now and again.[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Presentation[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Ben himself is quite the joker both in real life and as his AR avatar; the only difference is that he can do a lot more as his avatar, due to the android's tiny size. It's no surprise as to why either, as he was raised by a circus troupe growing up. He was taught to be a trapeze artist, and as such is highly acrobatic with his lithe build and has good posture. His sense of humor has been honed by the best of the best, but he does still fall flat on his face from time to time. He walks around with a confident gait and is usually dressed relatively neatly. His tone of voice is rarely serious, and it's almost as if he punctuates his sentences with chuckles or snickers with how often he laughs.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Primary Motivation(s)[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Bring joy to the world! Shoot me now[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Secondary Motivation(s)[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Helping Ambig with their plans and finding out what exactly is up with these beings[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Obstacles & Obligations[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Juggling a couple part-time jobs to pay rent and survive, large social circle he can't easily say no to but who would be happy to help him for small favors.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Covenant[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Far Gazer[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Themes[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Happiness, self-improvement[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Aug Purpose[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Social and Self-Defense[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Utilities[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]- Stand-up comedy[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]- Bringing up team morale[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]- Acrobatics[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Disadvantages[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]- Gives up easily[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]- Nervous around those of or who look like the opposite sex[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]History & Background[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]: Ben was born into the Cirque Renata and brought up to be one of its troupe members, but decided to leave the troupe in search of another calling. He has always wanted to delve into the world of stand-up comedy, though his parents wanted him to "stick to the script." They eventually relented, remembering how much of a free spirit they both were, and support their son through their own pocket whenever possible--they travel too much to have a bank account in every country--as they listen for news of how his job searches are going. It's always a tough crowd, but with the new augment Ben has been saving up for by doing part-time work as well as his newly spruced up AR avatar, he is looking to make it big.[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Now, after meeting Ambig, he's not so sure of his priorities. On the one hand, he wanted to stop having a reason for his parents to send him money, but on the other, his natural sense of curiosity eclipses most other aspects of his life. That gash in the sky needed to be investigated, it was calling out to him, and Ambig might be the only one(s?) capable of unraveling the truth.[/BCOLOR]

you can

i mean technically 'augment purpose' is supposed to be why you got the augs, not the augs themselves, not that it matters most augs are lowkey in utility beyond super rich, industrial, or military ones-- your big thing will come based more on chosen theme and covenant

Aug purpose examples: fashion, athletics, 'quality of life', industrial / other work related, police / paramilitary / military, restorative, punishment, corporate, etc

Understood, thank you! Will update application with new info, looking forward to joining :D

EDIT: All done; Aug Purpose, Obstacles and Obligations, and Appearance fields were edited in the original character sheet.

This intro post is the best, best, best kind of vague and mysterious possible. I'll get something up asap.

KEicSVx.jpg
Civilian Name: Sigmund Morose
AR Avatar Name: Mr. Feelgood
Age: 37
Gender Identity: Male

Appearance: Perhaps the most apt word to describe Sigmund's appearance is "European". A veritable medley of European stereotypes conform themselves upon the canvas of Sigmund's countenance. A noble (read: Greek) nose, piercing grey eyes, and stern, rigid bone structure. The hairs within his crewcut and his five o'clock shadow are dangerously greying, and his complexion is riddled by the wrinkles associated with aging poorly.

Athletically built, wiry and toned, and a man of significant (6'4) stature.

Avatar Description: Mr. Feelgood is essentially a parody of the happy-go-lucky, obnoxiously encouraging video fitness trainer. A muscular, All-American blonde-haired construct of Adonis' proportions, with a smile constructed for the camera and with nothing genuine behind it at all. It's garbed within a wrestling singlet adorned with the patterns of the American flag.
Presentation: The real world Sigmund Morose is world-weary, presented shoddily within a dress shirt – too lazy to even do all the buttons up. Slouching, and speaking in a lazy drawl, constantly peppered with threats of an idle yawn.

As Mr. Feelgood, Sigmund opts for a happy-go-lucky, energetic presentation, so contrived and overdone it may as well be the perfect caricature of happiness.

Primary Motivation: To be fulfilled in life, to achieve something close to true happiness.
Secondary Motivation: Failing that, blowing his own goddamn brains out. Although, seeing anything or anyone interesting while he works up the courage to do so is also quite nice.
Obstacles and Obligations: Threats and shady figures from his past, a divorced wife he owes alimony and child support to.

Covenant: Far Gazer.
Themes: Hedonism, new experiences, existential ennui.
Aug Purpose: Pleasure and athletics.

Utilities:
  • Incredible facility with accents.
  • A talent for conjuring up the perfect one-liner.
  • Infiltration.
Disadvantages:
  • An inability to maintain healthy relationships, be it friends, comrades, acquaintances or lovers.
  • Shocking bouts of existential crises that lead to suicidal fits.
History and Background:
Sigmund Morose was once an eternal figure in the darkest side of the cyberworld, a hitman for hire. Contracted in the integrated world, and with the deed done in the real world. The motivation, of course, was simply money. For whatever reason, Sigmund had been a chronic underachiever in his youth, with a rebellious streak that also made him unfit for any sort of lawful employment. And so he turned to his dark craft to make ends meet.

Those ends, unfortunately, simply nagged upon him. A woman who would never love him, and a child Sigmund knew should never grow up in his shadow. Eventually, he turned to Cyberware not as an avenue of finding unlawful employment, but as a way to escape. Money was no longer the currency he wished for. He needed true happiness to subsist on.

Civilian Name: Isaac Adrian Ziegler
AR Avatar Name: Zai
Age: 23
Gender Identity: Male

Avatar Description: Similar to his actual appearance, though with dark hair, a black suit, and a more slender build.
Presentation: Isaac walks with his head down, usually keeping his eyes focused on one thing or moving them quickly and often until he finds said thing to focus on. He's almost always moving fast, with his hands buried in his pockets or otherwise kept strictly close to his body. He exhibits a constant display of avoidance, deliberately choosing where to focus his attention. His voice is generally quiet, but his volume randomly spikes and dips at times as he is both hesitant to be heard and intent on being heard clearly. He uses few words to communicate as quickly and accurately as possible in a logic, fact based method disregarding sensitivity and maximizing efficiency and precision; pauses typically precede anything he says, creating awkward pauses and sudden rushes as he chooses his words beforehand and executes them flawlessly. He dresses neatly at all times - his clothes are always without a single crease or stray hair, all the same colour and similar materials - typically dress casual/formal regardless of setting.

Primary Motivation(s): Finding a sense of calm/peace, simultaneously obtaining 'perfection' and finding the means to let go and accept the imperfect.
Secondary Motivation(s): Create new friendships, both surface level and on a deeper level with a strong bond; let go and not care about the things that bother him, and generally take life in a lighter stride.
Obstacles & Obligations: Generally gets hung up on minor/irrelevant details to the point of derailing an entire endeavour over it, feels required to complete anything he begins and may go beyond the bounds of the reasonable to achieve closure; has been known to self-handicap and create an impossibility that he can use as an excuse not to do something in some cases, can be stubborn and very difficult to reason with/convince to accept facts he doesn't like. As for 'favours' his Uncle is willing to help him in a lot of ways (as long as he personally believes in both method and cause) without repayment; he also feels a subconscious debt to his Uncle that said Uncle has repeatedly denied to exist. Prone to neglecting to undertake/begin most new/any variety of task or endeavor as a way to avoid the need to 'complete' it.

Covenant: Ambig
Themes: Logic, impossibility, the abstract.
Aug Purpose: Therapeutic

Utilities:
- Thorough to the point of extreme precision
- Learns quickly, minimizing the amount of time to satisfy his thoroughness
- Has a nearly perfect memory that allows him to memorize virtually anything very quickly

Disadvantages:
- Very indecisive/poor decision maker
- Overemphasizes the negative to a near handicapping extent

History & Background: The second born child in a family of three boys and two girls, it was obvious even from a young age that Isaac did not process the world in an ordinary way. He displayed many obsessive compulsive and hypochondriacal tendencies, but due to the less than ideal financial state of the family never received any sort of assessment or professional help as a child. His way of handling his problems was to retreat as far into his own world as possible, distancing himself physically and emotionally from the rest of his family and most of society. His obsession with perfection provided countless roadblocks to many areas of development, particularly academically; he would regularly fail assignments due to passing far beyond a reasonable amount of time while 'perfecting' them, thereby failing to hand them in and… well, failing.

At the age of 18 he took the bare minimum to meet his needs and quietly left his country family for the big city, hoping to start over and start better. Upon discovering the letter he left, his mother contacted her particularly wealthy brother in a city not far away, and he intervened to take Isaac under his wing. For the past four years he has lived with his Uncle, who has been thoroughly supportive of finding a solution to his mental challenges - if somewhat eccentric in his own way. Approximately three months ago the custom AG program Isaac currently uses was finished, allowing him to see the world in a way that conforms almost perfectly to his obsessions. Having used it he has become completely convinced that it is the ultimate solution, and that nothing else will help him. Currently his Uncle is attempting to execute a rather specific plan for his nephew's life, complete with a top notch college education followed by a flourishing career.

Just as a side note on the wealthy relative clichè, the reason that the Uncle was willing to help Isaac now but never did anything for his sister or her family before would be the result of a falling out years before that made them lose touch - primarily concerning the Uncle's profitable management of money and his sister's chronic abuse and loss of it. He only helped Isaac because his sister agreed not to get involved, and because she begged him to look after her son out of loving concern - and because he sympathized with his nephew once he realized the extent of the issue, and eventually came to genuinely care for him in his own way.

I have some ideas for a second character who might be in the works for a bit longer...

So the ice storm really didn't turn out to be fuck all by the by, I probably will be a-okay

Will go over sheets after lunch or w/e though 8)

>.<
Having troubles with thinking of stuff to put down into a CS. Like, I'm mostly stuck on the convenant, and deciding if her augs would be for industrial use or not, and thus whether she'd be a technician, or a motorsport vehicle driver.

@BrattyCommissar Can there be more than one player character under a single covenant? Sorry if you already mentioned that, I didn't see it. ^^;
