As dinner was dished out, Kristin sadly had to share a table with Betty, thankfully Jared was with her. She could see her staring at him the whole time, her eyes more focused on her plate than her cousin at the moment. Kristin had no time to try and compete over who snagged the better man that evening. Though, Betty's constant staring was starting to even bother her, and she wasn't even being looked at.

"So, what do you do for a living, Jared?" Betty asked silently, Kristin glancing up at her before looking to Jared, he could answer it if he wished since she was in the middle of chewing some food.

"Just a CEO of a fashion company." Jared said stating the facts as cleanly and clearly as possible.

He watched her "boyfriend", eat down his plate like a pig while Betty seemed to pay no attention to him at all. Kristin on the other hand seemed quite silent and ignored. By the way she acted, Jared could feel that she wasn't exactly happy. Though Jared himself kept busy with eating the very last portions of his meal, hoping that this little chat would end as soon as possible. By the way Betty was staring, she looked at Jared like a predator looking at it's prey. He could tell that she was the type of woman who got exactly what she wanted no matter the consequences. Sure it was impressive but at the end of the day, personal competition brought no happiness.

Dinner was tense, Betty going silent after asking a few more question. Before long, dessert was being served and the adults moved into the living room for coffee while the children trotted about, hovering near the tree as they waited for the announcement of presents to open. Kristin had moved with Jared to one of the couches, dodging Betty as she sat around a couple of aunts and uncles who were far more polite with their questions than the nosy and jealous blond. Kristin sipped at a coffee lightly before chewing on some more of a fudge brownie, a plate of the goods along with fudge and caramels that were made by one of the women.

Just sitting in the chatter as Jared was question, Kristin smiled a bit. She was glad to be near him with her family, though Betty was the only exception to that feeling. Sitting back a bit, she started to get tired, the children getting restless and the clocked ticked on to a later hour.

As they left to relax, Jared felt himself dozing off a bit. The children were all whining or asking about Santa Clause and the sorts. He watched as the adults answered them, whispering that if they went to sleep later, gifts would arrive. By the time the clock struck midnight, the last of the guests had left. Including the blond woman Betty who seemingly made it clear that she would like to visit sometime again. As she waved good bye, Mr. and Mrs. Martin let out a sigh of exhaustion. Mrs. Martin went on about Betty being quite a nosy woman like usual. Mr. Martin threw out the last of the paper dishes and food. With all the cleaning done, they were all headed upstairs for sleep.

Jared showered one more time and found himself back into Kristin's room. Since it was technically Christmas day, he decided to present his present to her at one in the morning, not caring to wait. Pulling out of his pockets, he had a little box with a tiny encrusted jewel. Sure it wasn't the most lavish gift but he hoped she didn't mind. His cheeks flared up a bit but he handed it to her and murmured,

"I hope someday I can give you the real thing ..." Embarrased by the cheesiness of the sentence.

The band of platinum glittered and the pink little diamonds sparkled in the moonlight.

Kristin was relieved to have Betty out of the house, it just made her relax. Now she could enjoy the rest of the night sleeping peacefully and hopfully burning off all the food she had eaten that night. Heading up to her room, she showered once more before crawling into bed in a simple night gown, reading once more on her Ipad until Jared joined her around 1 am to have her a gift of all things. Looking over the box, she opened slowly before going silent, a look of awe on her face.

"Jared..." She said softly as she pulled out the small ring, her eyes sparking a bit as she looked up at him a moment before back to the ring.

"It's lovely...thank you. I...I didn't get you anything, at least nothing this nice. The present is still under the tree..." She admitted as she let her hands fall to her lap, her fingers still grasping the ring. "Why?"

Why?

There were so many reasons. Like how she made him a better person. How he learned to care. How she made him happier every single moment, no matter the roller coasters of drama and emotion. How he learned the real rawness of a relationship. But none of it seemed to justify her simple one worded question. He slipped the ring on to her finger.

"Because you're the one that changed me." Sure it wasn't the most detailed explanation but it held enough meaning. And for once, Jared really meant it with all his sincerity. His own heart that usually skipped a beat for any pretty head. It hurt when it they parted, it paced quicker with each and every touch. Maybe Jared was morphing from a caterpillar into a butterfly. A transformation. A change. He remembered the ugly beast he was a year ago. Childish and immature play boy, pathetic and idiotic. But through the little things he had been through with Kristin, he learned. He understood. He valued more than he expected. He wondered curiously what her own brunette mind was thinking. Her eyes staring at him with surprise and shy appreciation. Jared himself merely smiled, lying on the bed while staring up to her face. Waiting for her to say something... something.

Kristin was silent for a long while as she looked from him to the ring in her hand, slipping it on her ring finger for a moment and looking it over slowly. It was beautiful, Jared had such good taste and knew her very well. Looking back to him once again she leaned in a placed a kiss upon his lips. It was soft and gentle and full of more emotion and meaning than it seemed. With every fiber of her being she wanted to thank him, hold him and love him until he couldn't take it anymore. He made such a change and it seemed to be all for her. Pulling back from the kiss she gave him a small smile before she pulled him in and hug him closely.

Every touch was a sense of utopia. Happiness, joy and much more faith and hope. He found himself besides her, slowly drifting away into the slumber of sleep. He was glad that she liked it, content with the fact that she seemed to adore it. As he laid there thinking, memories appeared here and there. For one thing, the future still laid untold. He wondered the possibilities of a bigger life together. But he decided to push those thoughts away. Kristin had told him to take it slow and he wanted to please her. To listen and accept. The moon dimmed away as the night was covered in navy blue shades. The crickets peeped outside and the wind blew a gentle breeze. A perfect way to fall asleep.

Morning came, and Kristin was still cuddling with Jared in her sleep, the ring ever so gently sitting on her finger. She was the first to wake up, slipping from the bed with a small smile and removing the ring before placing it gently back into its box. She then headed towards the bathroom and turned on the shower, stripping herself of her clothing to clean up from the party the night before.

Jared awoke to the sound of water drizzling on the floor. He sighed, deciding to lay there until she got out. Within moments he heard the creaking off her feet. He pretended to be asleep as she leaned down to plant a kiss on him. Surprising her, he grasped her around the waist at a perfect angle. He could smell the sweet fumes of sugar rubbed across her silky smooth skin.

"Morning love." He murmured as he could feel their heartbeats pounding quickly. Laughing a little as he saw her blush pink.

Wrapping herself in a towel as she stepped out of the shower, she walked into her room to find Jared still sleeping. Smiling a bit, she walked over to him to place a kiss on his head, only to suddenly be grabbed. Her chest now stuck in his face, she was blushing madly and laughing at the same time.

"Jared! Stop, I've got to get dressed! And so do you! What if my parents come in? " She asked with a small giggle before she pushed him back enough to make him lay back on the bed. "You sneaky bugger...I should hit you!" She joked again, grabbing a pillow and whacking him with it.

Jared chuckled "Come on, you know you enjoy it."

He teasingly said, swiftly he managed to carry her bridal style as she clutched onto the towl tightly. He laughed even more as she attempted to get down from his arms. And of course Jared eventually let her down but first shared a long sweet kiss. His lips were soft against hers, delicate yet passionate. Finally Jared left her to get dressed as he got himself prepared. Walking downstairs, he found Kristin present at the table. The gifts were set on the table now. Jared had even thoughtfully prepared some things for both Mr and Mrs. Martin. He only hoped that they would enjoy it. For Mrs. Martin, he had got her a brooch and as for Mr.Martin, he had gotten him three tickets for the Superbowl which cost Jared a pretty penny.

The weekend had felt long but today would be their last day in Texas. And then they would return to the city of NY where everything was loud. Though he still had something to do before he left ...

Kristin was finally set free by Jared and she quickly dressed before making her way down the stairs. Her parents were both in the kitchen chatting lightly as her mother cooked more bacon and eggs for the small group. The table had the presents on it, including the one Kristin had gotten for him. It wasn't as lovely as the ring he had given her, but it was just as meaning full. It was an expensive wool sweater in his favorite color, and on top of that it was just large enough and comfortable to be meant for what he loved to do, relaxing. Along with that, there was a few things such a books he mentioned wanting and a money card so he could download songs that he wanted. Simple a well rounded gift.

Standing next to him, she was wearing some simple jeans and a heavy sweater, it being rather baggy on her small frame so the collar hung off of one of her small shoulders. Grinning at him, she pushed his present towards him quietly, the ring now neatly placed on her finger to anyone with a keen eye to see.

"Thank you," he said gently taking the gift.

Deciding to wear it, he was happy to see Kristin pleased. He gratefully accepted the other gifts from her, giving her a kiss on the cheek. He could catch both Mrs. and Mr. Martin eyeing him. Mr.s Martin quietly cooed and Mr. Martin nodded, as if to say that he approved of Jared's manners towards his daughter. They had a hearty breakfast and a light lunch. The two quietly packed their stuff, ready to depart from the quaint little town. Jared had shook Mr. Martins hand as he warmly smacked him on the back, calling him a good son. Mrs. Martin gave him a warm hug and blew a kiss to the two as they got into the car.

"Got to say, this trip is going to stay in my memory for a long long time..." Watching the scenery disappear behind them.

Kristin was blushing from the kiss as her parents watched them, the group eating breakfast and exchanging the rest of the gifts before she and Jared prepared to pack up and leave. They had to get back to their jobs and lives in the big apple, though Kristin knew she'd be back again, if not just for a summer visit then for the Christmas holiday once more.

"I agreed, I'll hold this memory deep in my heart for a long time." She said as she glanced at him in her seat.

Jared wondered what was next for them. It felt like their relationship was at it's peak. Though of course there were so many more things to show her and do. And he was right. As he checked his phone for mail, he paled. There written was a message from his mother. Apparently his grandmothers birthday was coming up and he was expected to come to the old woman's 85th birthday. He remembered the disastrous events from previous years. His grandmother embarrassed him and his date. She was a blunt and crazy woman. Very spontaneous and loud.

Deciding to mention it, he hoped that Kristin wouldn't be too cautious. With the way his brother acted, he knew that she was going to be hesitant. And truly, his grandmother was a vicious woman who liked people who had a voice. Maybe Kristin would get the old crone to shut up ...

Kristin was fine with attending the birthday party upon their return, thinking it was only fair since he had to deal with her large family and Betty at the same exact time. And over the holidays of all times! Though, she wondered if his grandmother would be like the rest of his family. After all, his brother was far too pushing and his parents didn't seem to show any type of affection to each other other than the fact that they shared a last name. It was a shame really. Maybe, this time around, she'd meet a nice member of his family...Hopefully.

By the time they got on the plane, the two were exhausted. The plane ride was stable but Jared kept thinking about his grandmother. Sure his family was cold and unaccepting but he wanted to show Kristin that at least one relative would be kind. But he sat there doubting his grandmother. Once the plain arrived back in the city, they were dropped off. Jared waved goodbye to Kristin as they parted separate ways. Within a week, the grand gala would commence and he would be face to face with everyone. All the people he shared blood with, all the rich and wealthy eilte. He could already imagine the discomfort.

The plane ride back was peaceful, Kristin slept the whole way home. She didn't think much about the party, though it did concern her slightly. It was going to be his grandmother after all, such a high figure in a family of wealthy people was not someone you upset without consequences. Keeping calm about it, she simply gave Jared a kiss goodbye before she headed home on her home, having every intention to get some sleep and thing about presents in the morning. After all, first introductions or not, you should always bring a gift to a birthday party.

Within a week, Jareds work schedule had ran smooth and quickly. Though he was still nervous about today, tonight. He hated going to family events. Plus having the most elite of family members wasn't that great. Jared waited at the front door of Kristin's apartment He had dressed in a fancy silk suit. He had bought his grandmother yet another jewel. She added one jewel to each piece of her necklace and it would almost be done. At least the old woman was happy and grateful. Whenever the woman got dresses and such, she casted it aside without a second thought. A vivacious woman.
