Childhood: Darla's mother and father were never married, and he ran off before she ever got to meet him. For the earliest years of Darla's life, her mother raised her on her own while working two jobs and going to school. Before Darla started elementary school, her mother met a new man and they got married almost right away and had some children of their own. The family dynamic became more orderly afterward, and Darla got along well with her step father and siblings as she went through middle school.
Now: High school has had its ups and downs, but Darla thinks she has managed well. She involved herself in extracurricular activities early on--volleyball and drama--and has made many friends as well. Her home life is still stable, though her relationship with her mother has become a bit strained. Her younger brother is her favorite person, and is the person Darla is going to miss the most when she goes to New York.
