An unpleasant rasp and the reptilian went right past both Nickolas and the camp fire, outside the cave entrance and out into the darkness. Cracks like the sharp report of a gunshot or the first sky-splitting tear of thunder before the rumble, the sounds flew through the cold mountain air and echoed to the back of the cave. Then the reptilian came back standing upright, with what looked like an entire dead bare tree dragged behind it in its four limbs, with each major branch ripped from the main trunk and the trunk itself torn into chunks. --In seconds it had split a forty foot alpine tree into strips.
It placed the unwieldy branch and trunk lengths beside the fire and Nickolas, touched his hand and a wood chunk expectantly, even though this had come from a living undried tree only good for sending up coughing smoke rather than burning.
