"This one is dead..hey noob, go clean it's cage out...you do know how to do that right?" Jacob nodded, lip curling slightly at the "nickname" but headed into the long hallway that housed the glass cells and occupants without saying a word. He wasn't exactly a noob, he had worked upstairs, far away from the prison itself, doing administrative things, mainly payroll. But he had made a stupid mistake, pissed off the wrong person, and had had his pay cut, and been ordered downstairs, the title of payroll taken away and replaced by night shift prison guard. Luckily, the other guards didn't know any of that, and just thought he was some new hire, so he didn't have to deal with the teasing and comments they made about the "lucky bastards" upstairs.
Anyway, back to the present, Jacob had to admit he was slightly nervous to enter the hall, this would be the first time he was around more than one prisoner, usually he only saw them as they were being led to the scientists, or already strapped down for testing. He hid the fear well though as he opened the door, his six foot frame blocking the light for an instant, and he cursed under his breath as he realized it was lights out inside the hall, and he would be cleaning the now abandoned cell with only a flashlight for company. His dark eyes darted through the hall as they adjusted to the light, and he was reassured that all the prisoners were still safely in their cells.
The cell in question was the second one down, and he keyed in the lock to open just that door. Remembering the instructions, he dragged the mattress out into the hall, before hooking up the hose to the nozzle across the way, and sending it full blast into the cell, careful to wet everything, under the steel bed frame, the toilet, everything, with the high powered water. Once that was done he dragged the mattress back in, propping it against the glass wall and setting the small, white cube in the center of the room, activating it and hurrying to get out of the cell and seal the door.
The cube emitted several different types of rays to destroy any and all magical presence, a nifty invention, but it took three to five minutes to complete it's task and scan the room, and in that few minutes, after rolling up the hose, Jacob had nothing else to do but study the occupants of the hall. Not that he would ever admit it, but they fascinated him, and he often wondered what it would be like to have powers, a taboo subject that would get him arrested and studied by the top psychologists if he ever admitted it...that was what he had heard anyway.
