Escape The Cages of Hell

Keziah nodded at Ceadra, wincing a little as she moved her neck. She followed her to the tree and sat down next to her. She was thankful that Ceadra was helping her and opened her mouth to say just that but closed it again once she remembered that she couldn't. She stared at the ground sadly; she hated not being able to speak. Sighing, she looked around the yard. This was the first time she had been out here. She noticed all of the other prisoners and frowned. 'There are so many people trapped here,' she realized. Her gaze, then, fell upon the guards who were walking around the perimeter and standing in the towers. One guard in particular caught her eye. He looked confused as he stared their way. 'Maybe he's new...' she thought. She hadn't had any particularly bad experiences guards, yet, so she wasn't sure how she felt about them. To her they just seemed like ordinary people. Though, until she was captured, she also viewed herself as a regular person, so what did she know. She looked away from the guard and back to her arm which was throbbing with pain. Gritting her teeth, she straightened her arm out the best she could. She looked back at Ceadra, her eyes silently asking for her help.

The other girl, Ceadra, must have recognized him, as she offered a small smile and a wave, and he couldn't help but grin back and wave. He remembered all the lectures about not trusting the prisoners, and that they would play with you, toy with you, but she seemed to like him. Even if it was just an act. It was hard, since he wasn't close to any of the guards, and his old friends upstairs didn't speak with him anymore, so any hint of kindness was welcomed, even if it was fake just to get on his good side. He watched the small group congregate around the tree and bit his lip, but it didn't seem like anything was going on.

He saw the injured girl, she seemed to be in a lot of pain and he wondered if he should help. He looked around, but he couldn't even see the other guard, and nobody else seemed interested. Maybe this was part of an experiment, to see how fast she healed or something? Still, when the girl, Kaziah, looked at him he could clearly see how much pain was in her eyes and he couldn't just do nothing. He had a roll of bandages in his pocket, and he figured it wouldn't hurt if the prisoners managed to get a hold of it, after all, it wasn't strong enough to be used as a rope or to escape. He meandered over towards the tree, pretending he was just walking the yard, and when he passed the two girls, he "accidentally" dropped the roll of bandages and continued on, hoping that none of the tower guards had seen it.

Ceadra took a deep breath and reached out to clasp Keziah's wrist in her own hand. Leaning forward slightly she said softly "You might want to bite something this is goin to have to be set." As she spoke she reached her other hand forward and placed the palm on Keziah's shoulder gripping her hand over the top so that the girl would not be able to wriggle free and she would have enough leverage to reset the bone. She was about to start, her muscles tensing ready to pull back as hard as necessary, when she heard someone walking close to them and then something dropped on the ground right next to where they were sitting. It was the guard. He had just walked by them and dropped something on the ground. As a rule of thumb anything that a guard dropped was fair game however, Ceadra had been starting to like the guard and was more curious to see what he had dropped. What she saw was more of a shock than the fact that he had actually left the softly of the fence. The area just inside the fence was more of a bloke than even the fence was. That was were the guards congregated, using the fence to protect their backs and using their tasers and harsh words to protect the ground in front of them. Leaving that area was almost like asking one of the prisoners to either steal something from your back pocket or attack you from behind.

Releasing her hand from Keziah's wrist she snapped out her hand to grab the item, and for a moment just looks at it with a hint of surprise. Bandages. And looking into the guys eye she knew that it had been no accident. Dropping the bandages into her lap so that one of the other guards would not see them she locked eyes with the guy and gave him a slow nod of thanks. Unlike the previous ones that had been sugar coated with an attempt to appease and gain a bit of favoritism this was a genuine thank you. Helping the prisoners was looked down upon and generally not allowed but, here was something she had not yet encountered amount the guards, scientists, or really anyone around here who was not kept against their will. Empathy.

But, empathy aside Ceadra had a task to complete. Turning she secured her grip on Keziah's wrist and shoulder and then with a fast powerful movement she pulled. Hearing the bone click back in place she switched her hand that was holding the girl's shoulder with her foot instead. Using her free hand to quickly wrap the bandage around the injured arm. The process was relatively quick as it should be, the longer and slower one went the more unesesary pain that was caused to the person injured.

Keziah winced as Ceadra took hold of her arm. She closed her eyes tightly and turned her head away, clenching her teeth. When she felt Ceadra let go, she opened her eyes and looked towards her, confused. She saw Ceadra looking at the guard that she had noticed earlier. Watching her expression, Keziah saw the shock evident in her face. In next moment, Ceadra reached out and grabbed the object. Keziah looked at the object in her hand. 'Bandages?' she thought, surprised. She whipped her head around to look at the guard that had dropped it. 'Did he drop them on purpose?' she wondered. She remembered the look on Ceadra's face; it was obvious that she thought he did. Keziah suddenly felt hopeful due to the small gesture of kindness. She smiled at him in an effort to express how thankful she was. Then, Ceadra grabbed her arm once more and pulled. She was not prepared as the pain shot through her arm and resonated up her spine. She gasped and, then, her mouth opened in an inaudible scream. Her eyes shut tightly and her teeth grinded against eachother. She balled her good hand into a fist, digging her nails into her flesh. When Ceadra had finished she let out her breath, which she hadn't realized she had been holding. Tears were streaming down her face, but she gave Ceadra a grateful smile. Wipping the tears off of her face, she glanced back at the guard.

Jacob offered a small smile back then completed his "walk" around the yard. It would be too obvious to just walk by the tree and then back to the fence. He couldn't lie, he was sweating bullets as he walked by the other prisoners, but the circuit was finally completed and he was safely back against the fence. He glanced up as suddenly another guard blocked his view. Soft words were exchanged, some that carried on the wind. "Helping prisoners....illegal....end up in a cell next to them....fucking sympathetic....ruining experiments..." all came from the guard blocking Jacob's view. Jacob seemed to be protesting, pretending to search his pockets and look surprised at the missing bandages.

However when the guard nodded and moved to go punish Ceadra and Keziah, he grabbed the male's arm and shook his head, confessing that he had dropped it. The guard nodded triumphantly, grabbing Jacob's arm and practically dragging him inside, another guard taking his place as if it had been planned.

Jacob returned ten minutes before the outside time ended, eye swollen almost shut, a new bruise on his left cheek, swollen lip. The guards had their own way of dealing with those they saw as "traitors" and it was to make them too scared to ever help a prisoner again. Jacob took his spot back on the fence, but instead of looking defeated or scared, he looked angry, though he was obviously trying to keep it hidden.

((Sorry guys! I was on tour...thank god it was a short tour...2 more pages!? Seriously!?!?))

Slade, hated to see a prisoner taken just to be harmed. It was drastically upsetting to him. He jumped down from his tree, and whispered to Jacob. "Are you okay?" he asked. Slade could tell he found his second in command for his escape. Jacob would be quite worthy for that position. "Tell you what brother. We need to find a way to get the head guard in here so we could get those keys of his. Apparently only he can activate the keys, so we may have to keep him....or his hand at least," he chuckled. Slade hated to jump into making a game plan so quickly right after asking 'Are you okay?' but he felt he must, because this may be the last chance they had before everyone was too weak and hurt.

Ceadra winced at the look of absolute pain on Keziah's face. She had encountered so much pain throughout her life, not just within the confines of these wall that one would almost think that she would be used to it by now but, each time she had to inflict pain on another person she could feel the twinge of guilt in her gut. The smile that she was offered after the fact helped a great deal with the feeling. The thought that it was all just to help prevented her from loosing her nerve later. Then again at this point in her life Ceadra sometimes doubted that she had a nerve left to loose, that was usually after a long experiment when she felt so burnt out that she began to wonder if she even had a heart left. Thankfully she made of tougher stuff and each time she had found something to hold onto and give her the strength to get back up.

After she was done setting the arm she sat with her back against the trunk of the tree watching with growing concern as Jacob made an exchange with another guard. The frown that split her face turned quickly into a defensive snarl, ready to leap forward and take the brunt of whatever punishment the guard was planning to deal out. She knew that Keziah could not take another beating so soon after an experiment, it would not be hard to focus the guards attention on herself, a preemptive attack usually doing the trick. Besides she knew that she was going to be dragged away soon, what could they do to her that would be worse than what was to come. The snarl fell from her face and was quickly replaced with a look of shock as the guard fessed up. With increasing levels of guilt she watched him being dragged away. She even winced in sympathy when she saw his face when he came out. True it was definitely not the worst she had seen, not even close, however she was still surprised that he was holding with his story, he took the punishment that would so often land on the unlucky prisoners.

She was still curiously watching the expression creep across the bruised face when Slade approached him. In Ceadra's opinion this was not the best of plans. Sure he had risked his neck to help a girl with a broken arm but, scheming with prisoners, helping them to escape? That was pushing it in her opinon. Even some of the prisoners who felt that they had nothing left to loose were quick to chicken out when it came to escape, they had seen those who were dragged back kicking and screaming into the lab, their cries becoming more and more muffled as they ventured down the hall until it was cut sharply. The silence was always the worst, the waiting, the wondering, the imagining, often times it was even worse then when the guard came by later that night to clean the cage for the next occupant. standing up with one quick motion Ceadra cast a quick look around before she made her way towards Slade, pointedly not looking at Jacob. It was not that she was avoiding him, it was just that he had just gotten caught helping her and Keziah, it was best that none of the guards see her looking or talking to him if they happened to wander over this direction.

"He took a risk for us, be careful not to push things." She said one hand rising to gently touch Slade's shoulder. Then taking a half glance at Jacob from the corner of her eye before continuing her casual scanning of the yard she added in a voice slightly louder so as to address Jacob. "I am sorry. I hardly remember a time when there was a guard willing to take a blow for us, do not think that we are ungrateful."

Jacob looked at Slade suspiciously, wondering if this was a trap set up by the other guards to see if he would report an escape attempt. But the other guards seemed busy taunting one of the prisoners being taken for questioning. He bit his lower lip, shaking his head. "I don't see the head guard, I'm...new here." He said, glancing sideways at Ceadra, who knew that he wasn't techniqually new, but just new to being a guard.

He looked around the yard, then back at the two. Suddenly he palmed the taser, waving it with aggression, to anyone who looked over anyway, it appeared as though he was threatening the two, but his tone was soft. "I don't know if you guys really are evil or lacking souls like we were taught, you seem to care about each other. I can't talk to you down here though, it will look suspicious. I work tonight again. I'm not saying I will help you." He warned, still not quite sure how he felt. After all, he was fighting against years of mental training. But he was beginning to question the things he was taught.

However, this could be a trap. Either they were working for the other guards or would kill him the moment they were free. They were is prison after all. "I won't say anything to anyone else but...I don't know if I can help you. I'm sorry." He said, looking torn and guilty.

Keziah watched as the other guard questioned Jacob with worried eyes. The worry, however, wasn't for herself but for him. She wasn't sure if she could survive another beating so soon, but she, also, didn't want him to be punished for his kindness towards them. When she saw him stop the guard from coming in their direction, a mixture of relief and guilt washed over her. She watched them take him away with a sad expression and stared at the door anxiously until he returned. She saw his swollen face and became increasingly more concerned. 'He probably regrets helping me now,' she thought sadly, turning her attention the the ground. Realizing that it was her fault that he got hurt, her guilt grew. She looked up at his face but instead of the scared look she expected; his face showed something else. It took her a few seconds to tell what it was because he was trying to mask it, but she soon recognized it as anger. Perplexed by this unexpected emotion she continued to watch the guard. Though, her thoughts soon where interrupted as Slade made his way to him.

She sat there in shock as Slade put a hand on his shoulder and proceeded to speak to him. 'What is he doing?! If one of the other guards sees them he will be in even more trouble,' she thought. She couldn't hear what they where saying, but she saw Slade lips move with the word escape. Now, she was new here, and Jacob had been nice to her and all, but even she knew that telling a guard about an escape plan probably wasn't the best idea. She was relieved as Ceadra got up and made her way over to them most likely thinking the same thing as her. She watched nervously as Ceadra spoke to Slade. As Jacob took his taser out, she became worried. When he didn't use it on either of them, however, she realized that it was just an act and was relieved. She continued to watch them curiously, waiting to see what would happen next.
