Defeating Darkness

Kimberly watched as Tom began making pancakes, saying that he always enjoyed cooking and that his mother would teach him a thing or two. Kim had never really learned how to cook outside of very basic from home economics class, she had never really had experience helping with dinner until moving here. The only thing she was every used to eating was instant and microwavable, those were the only things her father ever kept around the house. He poured some water into the bowl and continued mixing, then asked if she could get the milk from the fridge. Kimberly moved to get the milk without replying, and returned, standing next to him as she unscrewed the cap. "Tell me when to stop," Kimberly said as she began pouring just a little in until Tom told her that was good.

She put the milk back and watched as he went over to the stove to begin cooking, deciding to eat a strawberry while she waited. It tasted a lot better than she expected and when she finished she picked up another and walked over to stand next to Tom. "Here, taste it, there's plenty more." Kimberly held up the chocolate strawberry by his mouth so he could bite into it while she was holding it.

Tom took a bite from the strawberry being offered to him, tasty, they where very sweet. Rather like Kim, Tom thought to himself, smiling at this. He was at the frying pan now, pouring enough mixture in the pan to fry one at a time, waiting until they had solidified enough then flipping them with a spatula he was holding in his one free hand. He looked over to Kim who was sitting at the table eating the strawberries, seemingly daydreaming at the same time, "Hey" he called over, trying to get her attention as he managed to flip one of the pancakes successfully.

Leaving the pan on it's on for a moment he walked over to Kim and pulled her over to the pan, standing behind her he said "Your turn", wondering whether she had the skill to flip pancakes too.

Kimberly smiled as he took a bite of the strawberry, watching his face light up from the sweetness of the treat. She returned to the table, eating a few more of the strawberries and watching Tom was he made breakfast, wondering if maybe Laura could teach her how to cook. That way maybe she could make him breakfast or lunch or dinner some day, and she could light candles and it would be romantic... "Hey," Tom gathered her attention as he approached the table and took her by the hand over to the stove.

He stood behind her as she stared at the pan, and said "You're turn," and Kimberly stared at it, unsure of what to do. "I'm afraid I'll burn it.." She admitted, poking at it a bit with the spatula. "A girl that doesn't know how to cook. Pretty sad, huh?" Kimberly laughed as she had no idea what she was doing.

Tom was still standing behind her, "It's okay, I'm sure you wont burn it, here let me demonstrate." He took the pan from her, demonstrating how to flip the pancake, pouring some mixture into the pan for her to try, he said, "No, nothing wrong with a girl that can't cook, but a boy who can, there's definitely something wrong there." placing her back in front of the cooker, putting her hands around the handle of the pan, thinking how similar this moment was, to when he showed her how to skim a pebble across water.

Tom offered to teach her, showing her how to properly flip and pancake and Kimberly honestly felt like an idiot. Tom didn't seem to mind, though, as he poured some of the batter into the hot pan for her. It sizzled as it hit the hot pan and the aroma of homemade pancakes filled the air. It was something she hadn't smelled before, after all, Laura wasn't a big breakfast person and the only thing she ever had were eggs and toast, and maybe some fruit. Tom mentioned that there was nothing wrong with a girl not knowing how to cook but it was weird for a guy to. "Are you kidding? Chicks dig that, man." Kimberly laughed before he guided her with his hand on top of hers, much like how he taught her to skip stones. A small blush grew over her face as she waited for the pancake to be ready to flip, and was successfully able to flip it with a little less grace than Tom had done.

Kim joked at how much girls like boys who could could, as she successfully managed to flip the pancake, their aroma filling the air. He finished with the last few turning the stove off and putting them on to a single plate, grabbing two more for Kim and himself, then placing them gently on the table. He then went searching through the various cupboards as Kim sat on a chair, placing a pancake onto her plate, "Here we are" Tom said, pulling some things out of the cupboard, coming back to the table and placing some lemon juice, sugar, and maple syrup on it.
