I wouldn't say that we have to stick with the past tense for posts as a rule. That can be very stifling from a creative standpoint. This sort of collaborative fiction is all about, to my mind, achieving an individual voice that can mesh well with the rest of the group. One of the most effective ways of doing that is to slightly altering the tone of your writing from the accepted norm. That's why I use a lot of colloquiums and slang that may seem a touch out of place in a fantasy setting, so as to differentiate myself from the rest of the pack. Another effective way of achieving this individuality is using past tense while everyone else uses present tense, or trying your hand at 1st person perspective while everyone the others work on a 3rd. Hell, I've seen some people use a floating narrator, which you wouldn't think would work in RPing, but it did.
So I wouldn't say to use past tense as a rule, not if you think you can work a different perspective, as individuality is key in any sort of art.
I would say to make sure you're consistent though. If you start a post using past tense, don't end it on present, nor change from a 1st to 3rd person perspective in between sentences.
