Lance had been surprised to be so casually removed from the fight. He had been irate when he realized that Ivan had chosen not to use the opening he had created by drawing Jadon's attention. And all things considered, he was more than content to watch two idiots beat the living daylights out of each other while he pretended to look for an opening. He needed to check the other fights too, or else he risked another Inquisitor blindsiding him. Things were going about as one would expect them to; the Inquisitors overwhelming the first and seconds years, who were quickly losing any momentum they may have had. But things took a startling and potentially lethal turn as the red-head took an errant blow from someone's mace, falling to the floor like a lead weight spewing blood.
Lance felt his face pale as he realized what deep shit he may be in. If the wound was half as bad a it looked, the girl's death was a very real possibility. If the girl died, it would lead to a very thorough investigation on the circumstances leading to the fight. And in the event of such an investigation, Lance doubted he would get out unscathed. He had barely been allowed to continue attendance after the incident last year, if it got out that he had provoked the fight that lead to a girl's death...
Lance brought his attention back to Jadon. There wasn't much he could do at this point other than hope it didn't go that far. He would have to see to it that Jadon was soundly beaten, and then start setting up someone to take the fall if things went south. But Jadon was the primary concern right now. And he was currently in a fistfight with who may be the only person in the school both taller and more muscular than himself, to whom he was giving his undivided attention. It was hardly any effort at all to run up behind and sweep his feet out from under him with his scythe.
Jadon fell right as Ivan landed another punch to his jaw. As he hit the floor he reached out to grab Lance, but found himself grasping nothing but air; Lance had already put distance between them again. Not only was this action futile, he had contorted his body in such a way while doing it that he whipped his head right into the floor and had left himself nearly defenseless to further attack from the giant he had been fighting a mere moment before. "This is why you didn't graduate last year, Jadon. You let the heat of battle consume you and stop thinking. Maybe now the Inquisitors will finally see that too."
