Episode 2: Japan
Aciel's Vengeance

Thursday, August 13, 2015
Early Morning
Nippon Bound

The sun was shining high amongst the endless skies of blue which signaled a bright start for the future of the Japan bound students. In Ravenwood's parking lot was a particular bus that would soon serve as the shuttle to the airport in the next town over. The bus was far from ordinary; clad entirely in black with dark, tinted windows, the exterior lacked any company logos apart from the raven symbols of the university. Furthermore, the interior exceeded any feasible expectations with the display of pure luxury, hidden within. Rather than rows of seats, plush leather couches lined the walls of the bus while various coolers of beverages and numerous outlets of technology existed throughout.

Although the expected time of departure wasn't for a couple more hours, Kaivant had been long busy loading the underside of the bus with numerous suitcases provided through the two supervisors of the trip. After exhaling a sigh of exhaustion resulting from working under the summer heat, Kaivant turned to walk toward the tent which was set up near the position of the bus. There, the tantalizing scent of breakfast wafted across the parking lot from Fushinsetsu who was busy cooking pancakes, bacon, and eggs. In addition, Cecilia was pouring cups of orange juice; one of which was quickly stolen to quench Kaivant's thirst. Although the event was intended for the individuals traveling to Japan, a minimal payment would have scored breakfast for any student on their way to early morning classes.

"7:00"
The numbers flashed on the alarm clock's screen as it buzzed incessantly. He could faintly hear the sound of another alarm clock blaring from his father's room. With a groan Aaron pushed the covers off and struggled into a sitting position. He'd been late to bed last night, Shimako's text had ignited a small spark within and he'd spent a while researching some Japanese words. The very basics, hello, goodbye, how to introduce himself, things like that. And then he'd ended up following more personal interests and googling samurais and katana prices in Japan. It seemed his mother's dream might be a little derailed by the need for a permit to even own one, let alone get it out of the country. Unless he could find a workaround he didn't think there was much he could do. The $3000 price tag was also an obstacle.

And now he was getting up forty five minutes earlier than usual to make sure he wasn't late. With another louder groan he pushed up onto his feet and stumbled to the door, rubbing his eyes to clear them. He grabbed the two carry bags that were by it and dragged them out into the living room where he dropped them by the couch. Then he set about making a cup of tea to wake himself up and getting some breakfast.

***

Fifteen minutes later he was feeling a little better and much more awake. He was tempted to make another cup and quickly decided to follow that urge. By the time he was halfway through and feeling done with it his father emerged from the shower, dressed and ready for work. "Your turn." he said. Nodding Aaron washed the remainder of his drink down the sink and went to shower.

***

On the way back he grabbed his school backpack from his room which he had filled with his phone charger, some snacks, books and the folder of info for Japan. His wallet was also in there with his passport. Putting it on he walked out to the kitchen where his father waited. "Time for me to go. I'll see you in a month dad. Enjoy the house." There was a little blush accompanying those final words as they both knew what they meant.

His father smiled and, ever formal, held out his hand to shake, "Until then." Aaron reached out and took it.

To have his father pull him in close for a massive hug. "Was that really going to be your goodbye?" his father said with a chuckle. Taken aback by the man's sudden move Aaron didn't react at first, but quickly wrapped his arms around his father in turn.

"I'll miss you dad." he said, "But I'll stay in contact, I'll call you once we're there and every few nights."

"I'll miss you too Aaron." he released him from the hug and took a step back, looking his son in the eyes but still smiling, "Make sure you stay safe. Don't be too much like your mother, you're going over there to study not running around the city like a ... tourist."

Aaron laughed at his father's attempt at being strict, one obviously foiled by emotion. "I will, don't worry. Goodbye dad." he stepped forward and gave his father one final quick hug, then grabbed his luggage bags and left the house, on the way to Ravenwood.

Vivienne had slept deep and well the night before the trip began, having worked hard at homework assignments until she'd deemed it late enough to quit, which was only about 9:00. That put her in her bed under the covers at 9:30 and asleep at 10:00 or so, which was more than enough for her to wake up well rested and free of exhaustion the following morning. That was somewhat typical of her though, so she didn't celebrate the rest as much as some other people may have been inclined to. She still wasn't imune to wanting to stay in bed though, and as she'd dozed off, she hoped she would be able to wake up without delay or falling asleep again before she even got on her feet. That as well was typical of her...

~~~~~
With a loud yawn at the beeping of an alarm clock beside her, Vivienne sat herself up in her bed and rubbed her eyes with tired hands, surprised she'd been stirred all the way awake by the first alarm at what felt like several hours earlier than 7:30. Often she was one to be woken only slightly or fall asleep again before she made it this far, and end up late to get ready for wherever she was going at the early hour, but it seemed this particular trip was getting a good start to it unlike most of her adventures. All the more reason to be hopeful really, and that thought put a good sized smile on the teen's face as she got up to move about her room, hoping such actions would get her out of sleep mode so she could actually be ready in time. She'd packed her suitcase the night before however, so all she needed now was to shower and dress herself before she'd be all ready to leave along with her fellow students of Armstrong. And the chaperones of course, that was for sure.
~~~~~

Stepping out of the shower into a room full of steam, Vivienne felt like a much fresher person than she had a half an hour or so ago. Showers always energized her, and she wanted all the help she could get to be ready in time and not lagging behind everyone. She had to hurry a little now though since she intended to be a bit less lazy today. Drying off her hair and brushing it out, Vivienne settled down on a side braid down one shoulder. It'd dry wavy that way too, so that would likely save her some fussing later on over the tangled mass of hair atop her head. Once that was done Vivienne applied a very minimal but very effective amount of make up to once again try and meet the seemingly higher class and standards of Ravenwood. Rounding out her attempts to look nice were her clothes. A pair of dark jeans and a collared button down were her selection. She did look nice luckily, and by the time she was done, her clocked showed it as 8:37. Just enough time to look over what she'd packed one last time...

~~~~~
As 9:00 rolled around, Vivienne's bag also took to rolling as she made her way towards Ravenwood campus to catch the bus along with her classmates. She had it all ready and put together, with all items packed and her goodbyes covered the previous night, and her somewhat nicer appearance made her look slightly unlike herself in a nice way that really showed her excitement and efforts. She didn't care one way or another though, so she wasn't intending to flaunt her looks or anything silly like that and was rather focused on being ready to leave on time. She was feeling like someone would mention it all though, and even the idea made her flush with embarrassment. She never was one to take compliments and comments all that well. A shake of her head stopped the red in her cheeks though, and Vivienne managed to pull herself together once again as she continued to walk on over to her destination at a relaxed pace.
William had set his alarm earlier this morning, to ensure that he wouldn't be late to the Japan trip. He'd always found, it was better to be 5 hours early than ten minutes late.
Last night, he'd slept a little better than before. The nightmares were still there, the wolves coming to kill him, Kaivant turning on him with that dark sword of his. Now, though, they were somehow letting up in their intensity. Was it that his mind was on other things, like preparing for Japan? Perhaps it was something to do with having shared his beliefs with Akira the day before, knowing he wasn't the only one who still believed that it wasn't simply a hallucination from the food.
Anyway, he had packed last night, and after having showered, he was ready to go to the Ravenwood car park to get picked up. he imagined it's be a standard affair of sitting in a boring old coach for a few hours before finally getting into the airport, then an economy flight over to Japan to await to get into another coach.
Picking up his possessions and luggage bag that he'd packed last night, he started walking over to Ravenwood.
Ravenwood car park
Unexpected
He couldn't have been more wrong about their coach. From the outside, it was a glossy black, the windows tinted the same colour, save for the raven of Ravenwood. The interior, though, was an entirely different matter. Luxurious plush couches, drinks coolers, power outlets, it must have cost a fortune. He gazed in wonderment as the smell of a hearty cooked breakfast drifted through the air towards him, alerting him to the presence of the breakfast tent where President Takumi was cooking bacon, eggs, and pancakes, and he hungrily realised he'd had no breakfast yet.
Walking over, he picked up a plate and helped himself, drizzling lemon and sugar on his pancake, his favourite topping, and hungrily began eating the explosion of flavour that was his breakfast.
Sam looked reluctantly at the small bags he had packed for the trip. Besides the cash his Dad had given him, (As well as a talk about responsibility, leave it to the detective to give one when Sam was 20.) he didn't have much to his name. Enough clothes for a short while, his laptop. but not much else. He never really NEEDED much else, even when he was investigating the supernatural he didn't need much in the way of supplies, just his laptop, his clothes, and a trusty pipe. Now admittedly his investigations had been ended by some convinenet eves-dropping, but that wasn't important, with a last wave to his apartment he makes his way towards Ravenwood, and eventually, Japan.
When Sam arrives, he can't help but raise a brow, walking over to the one member of staff who he didn't relly know, he speaks up. "You guys really cut no costs on this thing didn't you?" He chuckles softly. "Well I'm impressed, what's your name anyway, I don't think I've seen you with those...two. Before." While Sam wasn't exactly fond of Fushinsetsu, eh didn't mind Cecilia, she HAD stopped the fight, and the way it was going...Sam wasn't sure they would have walked away from it. He'd promised himself not to get angry this trip, he just hoped he could keep that promise. He sniffs a faint, but familiar tang enters his nostrils. "More importantly, why do you smell like Hollow blood?"
Val
Today was an unusual one for Val, she woke up before the sun, no zombie mode would be permitted. She quickly scuttled from one empty room to another, grabbing things she might need while she's gone. Clothes, more clothes, running to the garage she grabbed detergent pens so she could do her own wash, running to the spare bedroom she grabbed her laptop which had been gathering some dust. There was too much stuff to fit in one suitcase, so she ended up filling two, dragging them to the door before she made her departing actions within the house. Shutting the curtains in every room, making sure none of the sinks were running, all set.. "Goodbye, other home." Val said quietly herself, as she slipped the house key into the door, locking it up until she returned home whenever then.
Two suitcases and one girl versus the road, the haul was long, but that didn't break her spirit. With her chin held high, Val marched on towards the school that wasn't her's once again. The road was more familiar this time, so, the walk didn't feel as long this time around.
Arriving at the parking lot of Ravenwood, Val quickly located the bus and the trip's attendees. Pulling the suitcases full force with her, she made her way past them until she reached the black bus. Standing the suitcases against the bus and sitting down inbetween them, Val let out a sole puff of exhaustion before shutting her eyes. It was an effort to get as much rest possible before the trip, she wasn't used to getting up so early, and there was no flipping way she'd be able to sleep on a bus full of people.
Vivienne had a calm walk over to the parking lot of Ravenwood where their bus waited, her bags in tow through the very easy hike from campus to campus. She'd not encountered anyone on the trip during the time she'd walled, despite the fact she was behind her personal schedule a little thanks to a mishap of her bag not actually being zipped and thus losing some items. Sure, she had planned to arrive around 9:45 rather than 10:00 which caused the hurry, but 15 minutes early was better than even a minute late in her own opinion. Obviously not everyone had that philosophy of time though, so Vivienne never let herself be too shocked or upset by those who didn't also arrive early to things such as this. They had their way to do things, and she had hers, so it was easier to remain quiet and respect whatever it is the decide to do. Conflict never was pleasant after all.
Soon enough a large black bus decorated by the Ravenwood symbol came into view in the lot, and along with it when figures of people. A few of the people Vivienne could recognize with at least some familiarity, but she didn't completely register all of them enough to walk over and start chatting or asking questions. Vivienne audibly sighed her relief at not being too early though. It would've been terribly awkward to be either the first present, or even worse still would've been arriving before the bus and chaperones. She was spared though, even if some of the anxiety and uncertainty was still lingering in her expression. Enough someone may note it, but not so much that she looked like a train-wreck of a person.
Spotting a roughly high-school aged girl with white hair and suitcases, Vivienne approached slowly under the assumption that she was sitting where luggage went. The newcomer had missed the other bags around after all somehow, so she didn't know what else to do beside sit with stranger. "H-hi, mind if I sit here as well?" Vivienne asks, cringing mentally at the weird squeak that screwed up her voice. She almost never did do that, but she perhaps was more intimidated than she'd originally believed. The other girl hopefully wouldn't mind though, or worse tease. However, having met no one terrible so far, Vivienne continued to smile as pleasantly as she could as she awaited a reply.
[Early Morning]
[Home to Ravenwood Parking Space]
[Alone]
Some part of Darius would have liked it if his parents stayed at home long enough so that they could at least said something like 'have fun' or 'stay safe'. But the reality of it was that the Jacks family had two working parents with long hours, and that Darius had been cut free from his 'leash' ever since he was ten years old. Most other teenagers would have enjoyed all the freedom and responsibility that came with parents allowing them to do whatever, but after seven or so years of this, it was definitely getting a bit tiresome. Or maybe it's less tiresome and more…distant?
The freckled boy was quick to discard such gloomy thoughts though, and finished the last of his cereal. He brought the bowl to his lips and drank the remaining mixture of cereal flakes and milk as well, before sighing contently. Japan was apparently a very loud, crowded space. Darius closed his eyes, and enjoyed the silence while he still could.
Don't fall asleep, idiot, chastised the responsible, hard-working Darius.
Reluctantly, he opened his eyes once more, yawned, and heaved his stuff up. With a heavy backpack dragging down on his shoulders and the handles of a dark blue suitcase in his right hand, he patted down the pockets of his school uniform, ensuring that his MP3 player, house keys, wallet, and passport were all nearby. It was a shame that he had lost his phone, but he might as well take the chance to buy a new one in Japan. Maybe it'll be one that transforms into a robot that shoots missiles out of its ass.
He pocketed his fantasies, plugged his ears, and went off on his way, humming a cheery tune.
~
Getting off the bus with some difficulty attributed to just how cumbersome the suitcase was, Darius sped up the sidewalk towards Ravenwood Campus. He had studied the map of the school on its website, and, combined with all that useful information the itinerary provided, was quick to reach the meeting point for the Japan-bound kiddos. He wasn't the first to arrive though, as a few other students were already loitering about the area. Their bus, which looked more like a limousine than anything else, made Darius question whether or not he should have worn a suit or something, so he could stylishly leave like a celebrity once they arrived at the airport. A tent was set up in the parking space, and even from afar, he could smell the aroma of American breakfast foods, designed to slaughter your arteries and start off your day with heartburn. Beside the limo were two cuties who also looked like students, squatting beside a pile of luggage. Guards? Naw, they looked too bored or sleepy for that.
Darius walked over to the two, lining his own suitcase up against the slick side of the car. At second glance, it appeared that the white-haired girl had a stitched-up scar on her face. Interesting, in a morbid fashion. After a few seconds of staring though, he got used to it, and remembered what he was planning to say the first place.
Jabbing a thumb towards the white-top tent, Darius said, "There's breakfast over there, if you two want to grab something to eat. Or coffee, if you're feeling like a zombie."
After a fair while of walking Aaron finally arrived at the Ravenwood campus. Fortunately there had been a cool breeze along most of his walk which had kept him from sweating under the weight of his two bags. He could see the bus waiting slightly further in and made his way over there. It was an impressive looking vehicle, the icon on the side confirming it was a privately owned, that made him think of an limo that had been stretched upwards. Ravenwood spared no expense in anything it did apparently. What would they plane they were taking look like?
As he got closer he also saw a tent had been set up from which the smell of breakfast wafted tantalisingly. Despite having eaten already it still made his stomach growl softly in anticipation. The smell of the bacon grabbed his attention the most, it would be a heartier meal than he had eaten at home. He could also see three other students standing in a group nearby. He recognised Vivienne easily, as well as the other girl who had stood out by her antics in the introduction room yesterday. The boy took him a little longer and he only knew him as one of the students who had also won a spot on the trip. He walked over to the trio.
"Hey everyone." he said in a friendly tone as he joined the group, finally dropping his bags to the ground and releasing the strain on his shoulders. He let out an involuntary sigh at the feeling. Then turning slightly he faced Vivienne, "You look nice today." he said, giving her a small smile. He then returned his attention to the group as a whole.
Clark began to look over everything he had prepared to bring with him on the school trip. Some clothes to last him the trip, and if needed he was sure he could buy some while he was in Japan, he had also brought his laptop and made sure to bring the necessary chargers for any other electronics he was bringing. Clark had made sure to tell his mother about the trip and she had been kind enough to send him some extra money for it which he gladly accepted. She had also cheerily reminded him on the phone to buy some souvenirs to send back. The happy reminder only made him think of the real reason the trip was happening. It had been worrying Clark, thinking of who or what they could possibly encounter in Japan. He snapped out of his thoughts and closed his suitcase before finally making his way to Ravenwood.
Once Clark arrived he was a bit surprised to see such a luxurious bus in the Raven wood car park, even though it was already clear to him that Ravenwood had plenty of cash to spend. He pulled his luggage over to the bus and sat down in the shade provided by it. Clark could smell the various breakfast meals being cooked in the tent, however he had already eaten in his breakfast earlier and the morning and had no more room in his stomach. Despite how tempting the aromas were. Clark noticed some of the Armstrong students talking to one another further along the outside of the bus. If only they knew what they might get dragged into...
Arising from her daze, Val looked to the approaching girl whom spoke. Her words were at first, incomprehensible, but the girl's question was quickly absorbed soon after and Val responded with a zombified nod. The girl looked innocent enough to not be a threat, and the white-haired girl was too tired to make any outbursts at her so instead she just looked at the girl a few times before setting her sights to the ground once again, muttering to herself. "So... sleepy."
Following the first encounter was swiftly another, a quirky looking boy approached, mentioning the food that was being made nearby. This statement got a bit more of a rise from Val as she changed her posture to look over to the breakfast being made, and then back to the boy. "No money." She stated flatly, mirroring the same stare that she was giving her. Then once again she set her gaze to the floor.
The last person to approach was another boy, this one seemed to have his sights on the innocent girl to Val's left. His attentions could have been pure, but in Val's current mindset anyone whom greets a girl in the morning with 'You look nice' was probably trying to swoon them. The thought put a knot in Val's stomach, making the thought of a meal a tad more appealing that prior.
The Parking Lot
Up until now, Dominic's mind had been wrapped around what had happened the night before. With a fresh cigarette lit, he began to ponder on the events of last night. First there was the students. Not all of them were able to write down their names, which wasn't the end of the world per-say, but it made watching them much easier. Dominic would then have to be reduced to names like.. 'You.' Or.. 'Student.' If that didn't make him feel like a passive-aggressive teacher, then he didn't know what would.
The second was when Dominic returned to his dorm that night. Instead of sending an email of notice to Len about their departure, Len had already been inside of the boy's abode with a expression that could use some lighting. The fact that most of Brookfield's defending force was leaving only made Len more stressed out than originally thought.
Before any more could be recollected, Dominic looked up to find himself stepped onto the parking lot tarmac. When he arrived, the bus had already begun loading people up. There were a few hours left before the departure, but he couldn't help but feel a tad bit late. The same students from Fushinsetu's class were scattered about the area, doing pretty much what they were doing last night. Dominic could only recall the names of a few. The others he would just have to guess.
Dispatching of his spent cigarette, Dominic stood by the bus's entrance and horizontally scanned the area.
Vivienne was slightly awkward after Valerie's quiet responses and reactions to being approached and greeted, but seeing as she didn't want to be rude, she didn't walk away. The last thing she needed was a bad impression and enemy to deal with on what she was hoping would be the trip of her lifetime. She wanted nothing but good company and even better expiriences. That would be nice to start happy with everyone and be able to love everything that they do from start to finish, but still no hopes climbed too high at that idealistic thought train. Many things could go wrong after all, so best not to set for later dissapointments that could be easily avoided.
Soon enough more company arrived though, and though one boy was unfamiliar, Vivienne did quickly recognize Aaron as one of the two to come over. She stayed quiet though, letting some words float amongst the group before Aaron's comment sunk in and did turn her a tad bit pink in the face. She knew she had tried harder that day, but she was somewhat surprised he noticed, and that quickly too. Not a complaint of course, for underneath all the embarrassment and shyness was a little bud of self-confidence that had just opened up a little father and gotten to be a bit more notable than it was even the night before. That would come to her attention once she started to relax around her new peers a little bit more.
"Th-thank you! I was hoping I'd look up to par with how nice the school is, w-with the private busses and all that stuff..." Vivienne felt she had to explain just a bit of the reasoning behind the effort, though now the squeak she'd held in her voice earlier to greet Valerie was gone and instead left her to talk in what was more commonly her voice. Still a little on the higher side of the spectrum, but she was far from irritating with the pitch and managed to somehow fit what she looked like she'd speak like. At least she'd never heard a complaint on the matter nor anyone say her voice didn't match what one would expect, which to her meant her voice was not an issue.
Goodbye, Brookfield
Interactions: None currently, open invitation
Bright and early.
Damian was a little excited, truth be told. He'd always imagine what it would be like to travel, see the world, fly, anything of the sort. The prospect was finally open to him, under less than acceptable pretenses but he wouldn't turn it down either way. A sense of duty compelled him to stay with the crowd and accompany them. Damian's chest was heavy with excitement, worry, and premonition. His feelings could be fixated into a triangular diagram, between seeing the sights, protecting the students, and fearing the potential strength of the Hollow breakout in Japan. Getting ready was no easier said than done. Before him, all of his necessities lay sprawled out onto the bed:
 • Multiple outfits
 • Wallet containing Black Card, ID, personal funds ($200 on Bank of America card)
 • 3DS with games (Monster Hunter, Super Smash Bros., Pokemon Y/Omega Ruby, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Tomodachi Life, R4 card, Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds)
 • Passport
 • Japanese Dictionary (Take- Borrowed by the local library)
 • MP3 Player
 • Laptop and mouse
Damian felt that this was more than enough to keep him situated for the trip ahead, if anything, he felt money, clothes, and a passport was enough. Carrying this much cargo felt like he went too far out of his way. But he wanted all possible scenario's of boredom to be taken care of ahead of time. No sin in sparring no expense. Usually. Damian took a quick glance out the window, outside he could see the bus parked and the students buzzing around the campus, he could only imagine the perpetual excitement giving the air that tingly feeling on their grin stretched cheeks. "Hm. I can't shake this feeling. I just hope they have a good time, with minimal incidents..." Damian said to himself solemnly. "Then be there when they need you." An echoing, dark voice muttered from the other end of the room. Damian slightly shivered from the surprise but recognized the voice almost instantly. Warden had taken a seat on his bed, hands folded and arched up, supporting his head as his red, beaming eyes jabbed into Damian's. "I want you to keep those students out of harms way. Whatever it takes. I'd attend to that... Fushinsetsu, myself. But my presence here on Earth is vastly limited. So my authority only remains in Limbo. Keep an eye on that atrocity. Listen in between the lines with what he says. In the short time you've seen him, this man's crafty and listless. Something's giving me the impression that he doesn't have our best interests in mind. Warn the other Hosts as well. Keep them on their toes. Lest you want children to die." Warden cautioned Damian before dissipating in rising streams of darkness that vanished from sight. "Yeah... Sure thing." Damian replied a little too late. Warden only prolonged and worsened his already apparent animosity towards the dangerous undertow of this trip. But now he could only grit his teeth, and bear it.
...
Outside.
It was a little more tame than Damian first anticipated, which wasn't good or bad either way. Those attending the trip were early, ready to make way for their excursion. As Damian walked down the campus, backpack and suitcase in hand, he noticed the sleek bus parked by the entrance of the campus. Damian managed to get a quick look at the interior through the front doors and saw some expensive design work decorating the vehicle. Obviously, Ravenwood endorsed what may have been the best they could muster. The bus appeared to be the very definition of luxury. The interior design was something you'd only see the wealthy and careless cruise about in. Damian was almost impressed, until he imagined a certain power of his Professor. The rest of the information session went by without much more event. Iphigenia's question was answered, although vaguely, by Dr. Takumi, who seemed to imply that they might skirt the laws a little bit to get the accepted students onto the trip. What, exactly, did he intend to do if somebody were to indeed not have a passport she did not know, but she stifled a laugh as she imagined a poor Armstrong student in the back of a fishing dinghy with the professor at the helm, cresting over a wave. It was odd, though that the more he spoke, the more the president of the college seemed like he was somebody that Iphigenia had met before.
As the second trip supervisor arrived at the front of the room, Iphie yet again had to cover her mouth with her hand to hide another smile as the little girl from Kaivant's room introduced herself. Having left Kaivant's office fairly quickly, she did not know that she was his sister. What she did know was that Cecilia Aldricht was a bit of a child prodigy and the head of research at Ravenwood, but she did not expect Cecilia to look as young in person, clutching a teddy bear and sitting atop the lecture table as she did. Iphigenia noted that she indeed did have an air of competence and seriousness about her underneath a cover of a lighter personality. But, if it was by nature or mere professionalism, she could not tell. Forcing her face back into a more neutral expression, Iphie slipped her pen and newly acquired folder into her messenger bag and stood up, resolving to look her up at home. After all, she had to see what the cute girl had accomplished.
---
At home, an expected envelope and an unexpected voicemail awaited Iphigenia. After changing into some more comfortable clothes and making a warm cup of tea, she grabbed the Leatherman knife from her bag and opened the envelope. She pulled out a thin four page packet, detailing the results of the blood work she had sent in two days earlier. Iphie scanned each page, taking brief glances at the numbers and values of each test and its notes, before stopping on the third page, jarred by the number of zeroes and null values on the last two pages. What the hell? The information was reading out like a normal human's blood, but then the last tests came out as if it was testing nothing. Her eyes fell to the handwritten words at the bottom of the forth page, which read 'Ms. Forsyth – Please call us.'
Iphie's eyes darted to the unread message on the display of her phone, nearly jamming her finger as she pressed the playback button. She leaned forward on her desk, resting her chin on clasped hands as she listened intently to the voicemail.
Iphigenia leaned back on her chair with a sigh, letting it roll back from the table a few inches. In the process of conducting the test, the blood that had splattered on her clothes had disappeared. What began as a simple routine test had turned into one of the most unusual cases the lab had seen, leaving both scientists and Iphigenia irritated and perplexed. They had started and completed the test today, and by the end of it, the blood had completely disappeared, leaving a clean piece of torn cloth. The technicians had no answers for this, and recommended sending the specimen and the data to a bigger lab with researchers for scientific evaluation. Recognizing pursuing this line would only create more problems, she had to call them after hours with the provided number and rather forcefully, shot this proposition down. The irritated student rubbed her eyes. This answer only lead to even more questions, whose implications she didn't yet dare to explore.
In the genuine interest of her mental sanity, Iphigenia purged the entire matter from her mind and picked up the handset again. She ordered some sushi for dinner in celebration of the Japan trip tomorrow, and after a pleasant meal of some salmon avocado rolls and shrimp tempura rolls, she decided to give little Cecilia some focus. Opening up a new Chrome tab on her computer, she searched the doctor's name on Google Scholar. The brief search produced a number of interesting looking papers written by the prodigy, which, after skimming, was added to the bookmarks for later casual reading. Iphie scrolled past another few pages of searches before flipping to regular Google. She was confused; none of the results returned anything past the last six months, and despite the glorious papers, there were no mention of the institutions she attended before coming to Ravenwood. Where there a metadata error with all the results? No, the relevant cross-referenced pages returned the same data. Was there some data not public, then? Behind a paywall, or reserved for higher education institutions only, maybe?
She called James again, but this time via Skype. After all, he had the most resources available to him, even more so for this case as Oxford University was well known for the fields that Cecilia held a degree in. Thankfully, the history major was still up and took her call almost immediately. To Iphigenia's delight, although the call was late in the night and the request was somewhat unreasonable, James agreed to help.
After an hour, both of them sat looking at each other on their screens, looking as perplexed as Iphie had been earlier in the evening. There was only one known person alive with Cecilia Aldricht as their name, so searches shouldn't have been too difficult. Databases such as ScienceDirect and the more general Academic Search produced detailed results, but they again were limited to six months ago. Otherwise, they were unable to find any more relevant information on Ravenwood's head of research.
Interestingly, there was a small lead when James accidentally left out a temporal tag in a historical database that he had insisted using; the database returned a single result from the early 19th century. It was from an article in an edition of the London Gazette, published 6 May 1834 that mentioned one Cecilia Adricht, an apparently up-and-coming couturier at the time. There was no further mention of her, and after a few tangential searches at the insistence of James, they found that she was one of the unlucky twenty to pass away in the 1835 Great Fire of New York. While interesting, this bit of information was useless to her current cause as it was obviously a different person, but Iphigenia nonetheless jotted it down along with the rest of her notes in Google Docs to reevaluate later. The exhausted pair then ended the search so that James could sleep and Iphie could (sleepily) pack.
---
Despite having stayed up unreasonably late night, Iphie was up early to double check her luggage. She was a very efficient packer; despite bringing along her shoe-box sized desktop computer and its monitor and accessories, she only had three pieces of luggage, including her messenger bag. She was alerted to some free breakfast over at Ravenwood, so after washing up and taking a shower, she grabbed her suitcase and computer carrying bag and made the short trip over to the parking lot of the university.
The lot was fairly empty, and the posh shuttle that would ferry them to the international airport was not difficult to locate. Upon reaching the tent next to the bus, Iphie helped herself to a healthy serving of bacon, eggs, and coffee, by now barely registering the surrounding people around her. Finding a random folding chair by the tent, she sat down to have her breakfast before finishing her large cup of coffee in a futile attempt to stay awake.
"Kaivant, my name is Kaivant."
Sam's approach tore Kaivant's attention away from his food and provided him with a reminder of his break's duration. Wiping away the sweat from his brow, Kaivant flashed Sam a quick smile before setting aside his food and rising to his feet with a hefty sigh. Sam's appearance seemed familiar. Not as a student of Ravenwood, not as a chaperone for the Japan study abroad, but as one of the Carnival participants from two years past. Recollecting that time brought a short-lived grimace to Kaivant's face, but he soon broke out into chuckle after which an answer to Sam's question was subsequently delivered.
"Just as you should have your secrets, I should have my own."
Tapping a finger against the sword pendant around his neck, Kaivant gave Sam a quick pat on the shoulder before returning his attention back to his task. In due time, everyone's luggage was loaded into the underside of the bus, and Kaivant once again returned to lazily recline in a folding chair under the tent.
"You're all ready to go, Shun..Cecilia."
Fushinsetsu had long finished preparing the complementary breakfast and was now conversing with Cecilia who seemed to express instances of concern on her face. As per usual, the man seemed entirely passive towards the spirit's whispers which seemed to faintly describe a scenario of stolen materials from her lab.
"...--ese isn't a ordinary matter. Those materials were stolen from my lab. Not only were you unaware...I was una...
Kaivant! Then I suppose it is about time we be on our way, Shun.?"
"Yes, let us get this hollow investigation under way."
A nod followed Fushinsetsu's reply toward his colleague after which the man then announced the cue for boarding the bus.
"It is almost time to depart. If we could get everyone onto the bus in an orderly fashion, we can be on our way shortly. Some students have yet to arrive, so we will give them a little more time, but I would imagine the bus be more comfortable than sitting under the sun."
Aaron saw Vivienne's cheeks blush at his friendly compliment and hoped he hadn't flustered her. She did stutter a bit with her reply but seemed ok. "It is a nice place." he said, turning to look at the facade of the college. The actual building was quite the distance away, with a pond that one might mistake for a small lake in-between them and the entrance. A small jet of water shot upwards from the centre, oddly small considering the rest of the feature. Behind it was the old fashioned looking building that certainly gave off an aura of wealth even without the statues littering the entranceway. "Though it must cost a lot to go there if they can afford this sort of stuff." he added, turning back to the bus and students on the trip.
He had been hoping to get a proper introduction to the two other students in the circle, though the female sitting down didn't seem to have talking high on the list of her priorities. But before he could the president announced that it was time to start boarding the bus. He had noticed the representative Kaivant packing everyone's luggage aboard while they chatted so he was only left with the backpack on his shoulders. "Let's go see what the inside looks like." he said, swinging it down to hold in one hand.
Walking onto the bus his brows rose at just how luxurious and limo like it was. He had been expecting a normal bus layout still, with rows of albeit plush seats going across it's width separated into individuals. The long couches going down its width and coolers placed at regular intervals were a surprise, it was exactly like a limo that had been stretched upwards. He took a seat about a quarter of the length down one couch with plenty of room either side for people to sit. He left the coolers alone for now, still full on the tea he had drunk earlier. There appeared to be a large screen at one end of the vehicle as well, though it was currently off. Placing his backapack between his legs he waited for everyone else to board.
[Japanstronk, Val in particular]
Woah, what a player. Arcing an eyebrow and a half-smile at the other boy who joined them, one who looked way too serious to be such a flirt, Darius watched as the girl he had directed that compliment to stuttered in response. It was a bit too much of happy, flirty, vanilla teenage romance for one morning, and he directed his attention to the unflappable scar-face instead. Despite being privy to a black card loaded with $500, she didn't feel any need to use that money on food?
Eh, it wasn't much of his business in the end.
What DID interest him, though, was HOW expensive the food was. Heading off to the tent and nodding at a few familiar faces from yesterday, he drifted over to the plates of food, searching for a price tag, or even a cashier. There were none. It was free.
Christ, everything was so free in Ravenwood. Were they swimming in money or something?
Without another thought, he stacked two plates up with tons of protein-heavy foods, ranging from thick slices of bacon to fatty tatter tots to moist pancakes to sizzling sausages. There were drinks too, of course, but Darius decided that he had time for that later. He head back to the limo, balancing the heavy plates as if he was a scale, before offering one of them to scar-face.
"They're actually free, you know? Might as well eat up to avoid the shitty airplane food later, eh?"
Of course, if she was on a diet, he'd have to eat it all…but Darius had no qualms with that. Japanese cuisine was stupidly healthy, after all, so he could afford to binge on red meat for now.
Val, Darius
Apparently it was time to relocate, though before she could muster he strength to haul herself and her belong into the limo-bus, the other less bold male returned with a plate full of food. High calorie, delicious, non-hippie food nonetheless, and the smell of this delivery sprung life into the zombified Valerie as she stood straight up. Taking the plate with widened eyes, Val stared longingly at the bacon that sprawled across her plate, drool would nearly be visible as moisture gathered at one side of her mouth.
"Th-thank you! What's your name again?" Val asked, her eyebrow raising in straightforward interest. Though her eye contact with the boy would break as she stared back down at the delicious platter now held carefully in her left hand, her right inched slowly towards the strips of bacon in a struggle to not 'go to town' on her favorite breakfast item.
But her politeness again returned, the violet eyes of the girl slowly set back upon the boy's face and Val smiled as honestly that she were capable to him. Then, her hunger overcame all thought. Slowly taking a strip of bacon at a time, placing them neatly in her mouth, making an effort to savor the meal with everything she had. She had no shame in her carnal desires, breakfast was something she rarely got to have. But she soon caught on as the the superiors were herding the students onto the limo-bus, verbally, not physically.
"Can one of the men carry my bags? I've got my hands full!" Val announced, looking towards the open door of the vehicle with squinted eyes, just before turning back to the food-deliverer and saying rather boldly. "Wanna sit with me?"
Akira St.Claire
|| With Japan group || Attention on William @The_J || At tent ||
Akira had woken up precisely and methodically on time as she always did. Her friends at her middle school used to joke that she'd drive her husband crazy with her OCD. Akira was a bit obsessive and compulsive about many things in life but if anything she had OCP. Akira also wasn't a romantic girl so thoughts of things like that never interested her in the first place. She'd let her hair down today, not in the usual ponytails she wore. Only because it was a special occasion she was doing this, she liked to dress nicely for big things. Though, her usual ribbons weren't lonely. She wore a blue ribbon in her hair, tied neatly into a bow on the west side of the top of her head. She couldn't do anything without her ribbons, she felt rather incomplete without them.
When she departed to meet up with everyone for the trip she smelled something heavenly. Lunch was Akira's favorite meal of the day but Breakfast and Dinner tied easily. Breakfast, always smelled the best while Lunch simply tasted the best to her. She helped herself to all the divine looking food. Making a medium sized plate of various colors and explosions of flavor. She parked herself next to William, somebody she'd gotten rather comfortable with now that she was aware they had the same suspicions. Their talk yesterday was very conducive to rouse up more interest in Akira.
"Good morning," She offered a small smile, sipping on a glass of orange juice.
