Seeing Cameron the way they had that day had been kind of jarring and weird, but in the end it didn't change of any of them viewed him. If anything it actually probably made the group of friends understand him a little better, especially Matthew, which at least was something good to come out of a bad situation.

A month passed and it seemed like Cameron was okay. And honestly, Cameron was the last thing on Samuel's mind because today was a very exciting day. Wel,l it was supposed to be the most exciting for Harper, but Samuel was very excited too. The little boy had loved soccer for years now, Samuel might have had a little to do with that, but whenever they were out in the yard playing it'd be kicking the soccer ball around. So now that he was five they had decided he was old enough to join a team if he wanted. And he had wanted to and today would be his first practice.

It was a sunny afternoon and all the family was coming along in support. It was maybe a little excessive, but it was important to take interest in your child's hobbies and if both Samuel and Roman wanted to come watch the rest of the kids had to as well. They didn't seem to mind though, the weather was nice and they had been promised snacks.

"Here let me help me with your shoes," Samuel suggested happily to Harper while Roman helped get the younger kids get ready to go sit i the car, he had received a proper pair of soccer shoes to celebrate that he was starting, "are you excited to play soccer for real?"

Today Harper was starting soccer and Roman would be lying if he said he wasn't just as excited about it as Samuel. He may joke a lot about how Harper wasn't allowed to play soccer and instead was going to be involved in the arts, but it was clear that Harper loved the sport his papa had been teaching him for years. And Roman wasn't the kind of parent to inhibit his kids from pursuing what they loved.

"Yes yes yes!"
Harper almost squealed, bouncing up and down on his seat as his papa tied his shoes for him. "I'm sooooooooo excited, Papa!"

"Well that's very good to hear,"
Roman said, smiling, from where he was struggling to get Letha into her sweater. "Letha, please wear it, we don't want you to get a chill."

Once everyone was wearing the appropriate garments and had donned their cute pink sweaters, the family made their way to the soccer oval where the practice was being held. Roman parked in reverse as close to the field as he could get, so he and the other kids could sit in the trunk of the van and watch Harper in comfort, rather than on the uncomfortable benches.

Roman got the three youngest kids out, sat them in the trunk with lots of blankets and pillows, then crouched down in front of Harper. He gave the adorable little boy a kiss to the cheek and brushed some of his hair out of his face. "You do your best today, okay? It doesn't matter if you're not the best, what matters is that you're having fun."

"Okay, Daddy. I wuv you."

Roman glowed. "I love you too," he said, pulling Harper in for a brief hug. "Okay, go with Papa, and we'll be right here."

s a m u e l

"Okay Harper, let's go," Samuel said, a huge smile on his face and so he and the boy walked over to the coach and the small squad of five-year-old soccer players, they were only a little bit away from where they had the car parked. The little soccer kids were absolutely adorable. Samuel knew that at this age the soccer wasn't serious at all. He had started at about seven eight and even then no one was especially good and everyone cried when they fell and a bunch of the kids weren't even really interested in the sport and were just playing because that was what everyone else did. But there were always a couple of them who you just knew really loved the sport and Samuel had a feeling Harper would be one of those, just based on how much he already liked the sport.

Samuel introduced himself and Harper to the coach, who was a man around Samuel and Roman's, it wouldn't surprise Samuel if it was just one of the kids' dads really. There was a good amount of other parents there, since the boys were still young, but since it wasn't everyone's first day on the team Harper seemed to be the only one with his entire family there.

The coach informed Samuel that they'd start practice in a minute or so Samuel took a moment to crouch down, give Harper a hug and once again remind him to have fun and that it was the most important, just like Roman had, but he also added "And make sure to show them how good you are," because Samuel had a tendency to get a little competitive when it came to soccer, and really Harper had kicked around balls in the yard since the age of one, so he felt like he had to be good compared to other five-year-olds.

Samuel stood, ruffled Harper's hair and stepped aside so the coach could get the practice started. The coach introduced Harper and then told them that today they'd start warming up by jogging back across the field and back, and that they'd then team up two and two to practice some passing and then have a nice little practice game.

Samuel shot Harper a final smile and gave him two thumbs up before heading over to his husband where he said, "Gosh I'm so excited? Are you excited to this is like the best thing ever, I love soccer, Harper is gonna look so cute playing it,"

"Who cares about Harper though, you're looking too cute to handle as you gush over him," Roman joked. But really, Samuel was so adorable when he got all excited about things like this. Soccer, and their children being sweet.

Roman shifted a little so he and Samuel could sit next to one another, leaning against the wall of the car with their legs stretched out along the length. The kids took their places on top of those legs. Of course, Roman had to bend his to the side a little so they would fit, meaning his knees were partially in Samuel's lap. Roman had made sure Samuel was sitting closest to the field so he could have the best view of field, because while Roman was just as excited, it was obvious that this meant a little more to Samuel than it did to him. After all, this was Samuel's sport, Samuel's passion. Roman wasn't going to try and take over that.

They watched affectionately as Harper jogged the length the coach indicated to them all. He was new, but he had no difficulty in keeping up with the other players. That could be due to them all being little and young, but Roman liked to believe it was because he was a little more experienced due to the time he had spent playing soccer as he had been growing up.

"Hey, Stella, Edie,"
Roman said to the twins, "doesn't Harper look super cool?"

s a m u e l

They all got snuggled up in the car and watched as the team started to run across the field. Harper was doing just as well as the other kids and Samuel just felt incredibly proud, even if it wasn't really something special. That was just kind of how most parents felt, he assumed, proud of their children for the smallest achievments, but still, this was soccer and Harper was playing so it felt special.

"Yeah, supew cool! And supew fast!" Stella chirped happily at her Daddy's question.

"Right!"
Samuel agreed happily, even though none of the little boys was especially fast at all.

As the boys wrapped up their running and the coach started pairing them up to do passes Samuel reached for his backpack and pulled out some carrot sticks, which he handed to Stella and Eden, but not Letha as she still was small. She could eat carrots, but it could still be a choking hazard.

"Aww this is kind of making me want to play," Samuel said as the boys started to kick the balls between them, none of them really had the technique in by far, but still soccer was soccer and seeing the little kids play just reminded him of playing at a young age.

"Samuel," Roman said, amused, "you're not allowed to live vicariously through our son, you can play soccer on the weekend with Evan and the others."

Of course, there would be a day where Samuel couldn't play soccer anymore. Roman honestly dreaded that day because it would be like him losing his ability to paint or sing or draw. It would be like losing a whole part of his identity. The only difference between the two of them, in that sense, was that it was a guarantee that Samuel was going to get to a stage where his body didn't allow him to play soccer, but theoretically, Roman would be able to be artistic forever. And that was very saddening.

Roman gave Samuel a kiss to the back of the neck, then picked up Letha and deposited her in his lap, as if to apologise for the terrible thought he had just had. Then, he nuzzled Samuel's shoulder a little, and looked out at Harper as he dutifully kicked the ball to his partner.

"Does this mean I get to paint my nails in accordance with his team colours?"

s a m u e l

"Um yes, that is totally what it means,"
Samuel said, and then added, still very excitedly, "You should paint mine in the colours as well, we'll match It'll be cute,"

"Mine too! Mine too" Stella demanded loudly and adorably, holding out her hands to show them she meant her fingernails.

"Naww, you too, What about Edie, do you also want Daddy to paint your nails in Harper's team colours?" Samuel asked his youngest son sweetly, he was a little quiet sometimes so Samuel felt like it was important to make sure to include him in conversations.

Eden looked at Samuel for a moment or two, then out at Harper and his team where they still were kicking the balls, missing their partners sometimes, succeeding sometimes, "Yes," The little boy decided. Samuel smiled, happy that he wanted to be a part of the activity as well. Then, because she actually was getting a little older and a little better at following conversation and speaking in general Samuel asked the youngest of his two daugthers, "And Letha, do you also want daddy to paint your nails?"

Letha, the little angel, stared at her papa for a few moments with those huge blue eyes and with a small quirk to her soft lips. She was so beautiful she literally took Roman's breath away. Then, she smiled and nodded sweetly. "Yes," she said adorably.

"Aww,"
Roman said, reaching over to gently pinch one of her chubby cheeks. She giggled and grabbed his hand before he could pull it away. "Letha, I need that hand."

Letha, still beaming like an actual ray of sunshine, shook her head and hugged his hand close to her chest. "Mine."

Roman was tempted to let her keep his hand in her possession, because she was so delightful and sweet that he wanted to give her the whole entire world. But he also wanted to reach for one of the cokes a few feet away from him.

"Samuel, please tell your daughter to relinquish her hold on my hand."

s a m u e l

Samuel's heart practically melted upon seeing the interaction between his husband and their daughter. It was so precious and Letha was literally too cute for this world sometimes, they were so lucky to have her to complete their not so little family.

"How could you want such a sweet little angel to let go of your hand?" Samuel asked, sounding as if he seriously questioned Roman's sanity. Letha was simply adorable and impossible to resist, "But I suppose I can be a nice husband for once," He gave Letha's hand a gentle pat, "Sweetie can you let go of your daddy's hand please?"

Then, in the sweetest way possible, Eden reached out his own hand to Letha and softly said, "Lefa can hold mine,"

r o m a n
"Awww, Edie, that's so nice of you," Roman said sweetly. He always adored it when his children got along and were affectionate with one another. It showed that blood didn't matter — what mattered was the love in the household you were raised in. These children considered each other siblings when, sans Stella and Eden obviously, none of them were biologically related, and that was absolutely wonderful.

Roman picked up Letha and sat her beside Eden so they could be close and adorable. Letha took Eden's hand and leaned against his shoulder affectionately. "Edie," she said in her sweet and precious baby voice. Roman could have died. Goodness, his children were so perfect in every way.

A whistle on the field blew and it was announced that the kids would be starting their practice game. Roman was excited because this would be the first indication of how Harper really stacked up against his teammates. Drills and jogging were all well and good, but this would be a true test of skill.

Harper was on the team with the sashes and took up a position on the field. When the whistle blew again, one of his teammates took possession of the ball. Harper cleverly dashed out in full and open view and his teammate shakily passed the ball to him. And suddenly Harper was in possession and he was dashing as fast as he could down the field, somewhat awkwardly dribbling the ball, but dribbling it nonetheless. It was a small distance, but he made it and sank the ball into the goal. It sailed past the dumbfounded goalie and richocheted off the net.

Roman moved Letha next to Eden and Eden looked very happy to get to sit next to his little sister and hold her hand. They would have probably taken all of Samuel's attention for a little while longer if the whistle to indicate that the little practice game was starting and suddenly all of Samuel's attention was back on Harper. He would actually be playing now, for real, not just with him, Evan and occasionally Alisson in the backyard. Sure it was a practice game but it was still a game, this was excited.

It was still a bunch of five-year-olds playing so it was a little silly to look at as they all stumbled after the ball and tried their best to pass it. Samuel couldn't even really say that Harper was amazingly good or anything, but he could tell his little boy was putting his all in it, and at this age, it was really what made a difference between the good and the bad players. The ones that were good were the ones who cared and actually played, the ones that weren't as good were the ones that forgot they were playing and started to wave to family members or look at the grass or wander off.

But Harper was doing his best and Samuel actually found his heart-beat was going a little faster when Harper got the ball and started to get it to the goal. They had shot so many goals at home Samuel just really wanted Harper to nail it, to show him that the training paid off and he did.

"Whoo! Go, Harper!" Samuel called out, and then realised that maybe a practice game full of five year olds wasn't the place to cheer like that, but this was Harper's first time playing so he doubted anyone would care too much.

r o m a n
Roman let out a similar cheer to his husband when their son scored a goal, Harper beamed with happiness, looking up and waving over at his family in the car. Roman made sure to wave back. He was so proud of their little boy. Obviously he wasn't fantastic but he was trying his best and it was clear that he loved the sport a lot. So, Roman was proud of any achievement he made, no matter how great or small.

The practice game went on for a little while. Harper didn't score another goal but he did get possession of the ball quite a few times, and when he did it was clear he was trying his best. When the whistle blew and the coach dismissed all the kids they went off to their parents. Roman sat up and beamed when Harper ran over to them.

"You did an amazing job, sweetie!" Roman said happily, helping Harper up into the boot as well.

"Thank you!"

"You're welcome. We're very proud."

s a m u e l

"The proudest!" Samuel re affirmed his husbands statement as Harper came back from his game and gave his hair a little ruffle, "you played so well, I'm super impressed! You'll be a pro in no time,"

Samuel had truly loved watching his son play. Sure it hadn't been the most entertaining game compared to how it got when the kids were a little older, but to see Harper out there on the field working hard and looking happy, was so exiting for Samuel that that didn't matter. He honestly felt like he could have watched Harper play for hours, and he was happy he would be able to as long as Harper continued to play. And as long as Harper wanted to he was going to be there, for every game he could make it to.

"You know what we should do? We should celebrate that it went so well with ice cream," Samuel said, post-soccer celebratory ice cream was something he didn't mind re-instating from his own childhood. Plus Harper deserved it, he had done so well playing, doing his best and Samuel was so very proud of him.

"See, I thought I was fluent in Spanish but then some kid asked me a grammatical question and now I feel like an idiot."

It was about a month after Harper's first soccer practice. Over that time he had played a couple of proper games against other teams. Of course, none of those games had been that great, but Roman had enjoyed them immensely, simply because his son had been playing and having a great time.

Today, however, Roman hadn't had the greatest of times. He had filled in for Samuel, who was at home sick, and while he didn't mind substituting at all, he wasn't very good at history or teaching Spanish so he had been a bit lost. Also, he had had to deal with a somewhat annoying teacher who had kept talking to him all day, and while he usually didn't mind socialising, there was something a little off about her.

But in total, his day had certainly not been that bad, so he came home happy. He had picked up Harper but the other kids were still at daycare and would be for a few more hours, which gave him some time to check up on Samuel and baby him a little. After giving Harper a snack Roman came up the stairs with a mug of warm soup in one hand and a big bouquet of calla lilies, which he had picked up from a florist, in the other. He set the soup down on the bedside table, pressed the flowers into his husband's arms, and gave him a soft kiss to the clammy forehead.

"Holy shit, you're burning up,"
Roman murmured, sitting down beside Samuel on the bed and laying a hand over his tanned forehead. "Is there anything I can get you?"

s a m u e l

Samuel felt like absolute death. He rarely got sick, he was always healthy, ate right and on top of that he had a stellar immune system, he could honestly count on one hand the times he had gotten anything that made him unable to go to work in the years he had dated Roman. But when he got sick he was sick. He had felt it coming on the days before, a minor headache and a bit of a sore throat, but today he hadn't even been able to get out of bed. Every time he tried to get out of bed his head felt like it was exploding, he couldn't breath out of his nose, his throat hurt so bad he could feel it in his ears when he swallowed and he was freezing despite the blankets he was under.

Roman had had to fill in for him at work, Samuel loved him so much, and he loved that Roman actually had a job that allowed him that flexibility, it was just a lot easier to send Roman with his laptop and notes for the day's agenda than it was to fill in someone else. So he was forever grateful, and had spent all day just laying in bed feeling half dead, but occasionally trying to read a little at least.

By the time Roman was coming home he was feeling just a tad better. He heard the door, so, he propped himself up on his pillows in more of a seated position

"No, soup and flowers is all I need, I'm actually feeling really cold though, so like soup is perfect, thank you," Samuel said, his voice was raspy and a little nasal, so he still sounded very sick. He probably looked pretty terrible too, but luckily he didn't care if Roman saw him all horrible and sick looking because they loved each other anyways, "The flowers are really nice too, I can't really smell them though, but still thank you, I love you," He shot Roman a smile because he could make him feel good even when he felt terrible.

Samuel put the flowers aside for now, and patted for Roman to sit next to him, when he did he cuddled close. He had missed his husband and he was warm and cozy, having him there made everything a little better. He'd avoid proper kisses though because he didn't want Roman to catch whatever he had come down with.

"I'm sorry the kids made you feel dumb though, for the record I think you're Spanish is fantastic considering when you started to learn it," Samuel said, earnestly, Roman had picked up the language in just the past five years, the french probably helped since the languages both were latin ones, but still it was very impressive in Samuel's opinion and he shouldn't feel stupid for not knowing one grammatical detail. The important part was that he could communicate and understand it, "I hope"

r o m a n
"Aww, gracias," Roman said softly. He pulled Samuel close and leaned back into their pillows. He could feel his husband burning up in his arms, which was a little concerning, but he knew it was probably just a cold or a bug that would go away relatively soon. It wasn't something to worry about that much -- and maybe if he got sick as well he would get to be babied by his husband for a couple of days as well.

"But, really, I didn't have a bad day, it was just a little weird because I was teaching subjects I don't know much about? Like usually if I sub for anything it's music or drama or art so I have some idea of what to do? But mostly the kids just did their work and I didn't have that many issues."

Roman nuzzled Samuel's curls a little and rubbed his back. Samuel didn't get sick much so Roman didn't really have a great idea of how to comfort him when he was as ill as this. But he had taken care of the kids a lot when they had colds during the winter and he figured he could take a similar approach with his husband -- some nice cuddles and ensuring that they had everything they needed.

"Though, one of your coworkers was a bit weird -- I think she was new, I can't remember her surname but her first name was Oksana,"
Roman said. "She's nice and all but she just kept talking to me? Like she came by my desk three different times during lunch, and she didn't really have anything interesting to talk about, she was just reaching for conversation topics. I don't know, she was a little strange."

s a m u e l

Samuel was very happy to have Roman back in bed with him, he was also very interested in hearing about Roman's day, usually when he filled in at Samuel's work place Samuel was there, but today he hadn't. He was a little surprised to hear him talk about Oksana though,

"Oh yeah, that's Oksana Vovk, she is new," Samuel explained, eyes now closed, he was very tired but he hadn't even gotten much sleep all day because of how uncomfortable he felt when being so sick, "I dunno, remember I told you we had so faculty issues in the science department in the beginning of the term this year? We've had a couple of subs to fill in until now but she has been employed now so it has all gotten sorted out, she teaches a bunch of different subjects so she's got a lot of good competence which is really nice,"

Being a teacher certainly wasn't the most sought after job in the world, it was little pay for a lot of work and incredibly stressful. So after some trouble with one of the science teachers, who had a lot of classes and taught a lot of subject had to move due to some family related issue the school had ended up in a bit of a tight spot, but it had all sorted itself out in the end.

"But yeah, I dunno, She's been with us for what? Like one two months now and I have barely even spoken to her, she seems nice and the kids seem to like her, but I guess she's very shy maybe? And I mean she's a little younger as well, and it's scary to come to a new work place where everyone knows each other so I don't blame her,"
She really didn't speak much to anyone it seemed and spent most lunches working, she probably freed up a lot of free time like that but Samuel hoped she wasn't just to scared to talk with her coworkers or something, "Maybe she just talked to you since you're a sub and aren't as familiar with everyone there?"

r o m a n
"I don't know, it was like she just wanted to talk to me and no one else," Roman said. He wasn't trying to throw this teacher under the bus or anything -- she was genuinely nice, he could tell, and she hadn't done anything wrong. But he was just trying to explain how he felt to his husband, because honestly it was confusing him as well. And besides, maybe Samuel had seen her exhibit this behaviour with other people, meaning it wasn't just unique to Roman.

"Like, one of the other science teachers came to ask her a question and she answered it but made out that she was busy, but then right after she got up to come and talk to me about where I got my tattoos,"
Roman said. "That's a bit weird, don't you think?"

Roman sighed and continued to rub Samuel's back. It had honestly made him a little uncomfortable, her insistence to speak to him. Of course, he hadn't felt threatened, but he hadn't been particularly interested in her random conversation topics and the fact that she hadn't picked up on that had been a little jarring, considering she was a psychology teacher and all.

But he'd live. "Eh, I don't know. I'm sure it's nothing. Hey, do you want me to run you a nice bath? I'll put all your favourite bath products in and it'll help you warm up."

s a m u e l

"Just tell me if you want someone else to fill in. But yeah that would be great," Samuel said sounding a little weak, and nussled into Roman, for a moment, a warm bath sounded really nice, maybe he could was some of the sickness away or something.

Samuel did think the way Roman describe it was a little weird and it did put on a bit of a frown on his face. He didn't want Roman to feel uncomfortable filling in for him or anyone really, because he knew Roman kind of liked doing it occasionally, at least when it was a more artsy subject. Hopefully it was just as Samuel had thought and nothing else too it. He didn't want to as Oksana about it though, she was new and being confronted about it might actually embarrass her a lot. But Samuel would feel better in a day or two and he'd be back to work and Roman would be back to tattooing and then by the next time Roman filled in for someone Oksana would maybe feel a little more at home in her work environment and this would turn out to not be an issue.

Samuel sat more properly again and reached for the bowl of soup, he'd eat it while the tub was filling up since he probably would freeze to death if he was only half soaked in the water, "is there time for you to join me before you pick up the kids?"

r o m a n
"Nah, it should be fine," Roman said. He didn't want his husband to worry about having to find another sub and explain everything to them simply because he himself was mildly annoyed that another teacher kept talking to him. No, that would be unfair, and Roman wanted to take care of his husband as much as possible while he was sick. The added stress of having to debrief another sub would be counterproductive to that.

So, he would stick it out until the end, even if Oksana drove him mad in the meantime.

"I'm sure I can spare some time for you, my dear."
And so, Roman ran a bath and spent a little time just relaxing in it with his husband, making sure the water was warm and Samuel was comfortable. As much as he loved babying him when he was sick, Roman hoped he got better soon, so he could return to his own job, and everything could go back to normal. But until then, Roman would be buying his significant other flowers every day, and brewing a lot of soup.
