"Yep... The city always feels bigger when you're not looking to leave..." To confirm this, the scene around him change. Maybe Cecilia couldn't see well, but Callum could see that the street had become a path, and there were almost no buildings around them. The guards were gone too- and Callum felt a cheer in his heart. Perhaps more of his people could finally settle in the city and be safe... But then again, no guards means something really bad must have happened...
"Huh... there are fresh footprints here." He hummed, and began to follow them, deviating slightly to the left.
The fog began to grow thin the further out they went, so finally perhaps Cecilia could see as well. There was literally a great deal of nothing around them- just sparse, dead-looking grass underfoot and a great, big stretch of night sky overhead. Stars dotted the expanse, some clustered together, and some more apart. It was as if God were a child with colored sand and black paper- nothing made sense other than the whimsical constellations, and yet it was all so beautiful.
To the right, suddenly alarmingly close, was the Pillar of Humanity that marked the border of safety. It was bone-white and contrasted brightly against the dark sky, which it seemed to almost hope to touch with its massive height. There were lanterns- empty of oil and yet still lit- tied around the thing with thick lengths of rope. Being so close to it again unnerved Callum greatly, but he kept walking.
And then... A figure appeared on the horizon.
At first, it was a mere silhouette, but the closer they got the more obvious it was that this was a young, dark-haired man. He was standing there- awkward and un-moving.
"Is that him...? He looks drunk, hehe." The elf-boy giggled through a hand pressed to his mouth, and then stopped when suddenly a loud rumble echoed around them.
The pillar exploded- it popped like a balloon and Callum could see pieces of the slain Luethia, a statue once upon the pillar, fade into dust as they hit the soiled and sullen earth around them. "What the..." Callum stood in shock.
First, he was mildy confused and unnerved... but then, the full impact of the collapse hit him- the Pillars were falling. The safeguard was failing. There would be nothing stopping the Naught from entering the city and wiping out one of the last remnants of civilized humanity. "Oh no..." Callum watched the end of the world begin again.
As the dust from the event settled, Callum caught a strange morphing in the stars of the sky. Some were vanishing, and reappearing... He stared, perplexed, until his eyes suddenly properly focused and he could see the massive, pitch-black hand that had smooshed the Pillar to the ground retract from the wreckage. It had camouflaged itself against the night sky almost perfectly.
Thankfully, it did not seem interested in them.
Dominic stood still as the ground shook and the sound of the last rattles of their holy safe-guard rasped in the air around him.
His mind reeled from the shock of what it saw- and he almost felt like he could finally control himself again.[/fieldbox]
