His face burned when she winked at him. "Oh, okay. Yeah, definitely will! You're favorite superhero, I mean. 'Cause, you know, I asked you about it. Aah! Not you, er, yeah I did ask you—" He wouldn't have stopped babbling if Tikki and Alec hadn't nudged him. Rubbing the back of his neck, he followed the others to the into the theater. He watched in amusement at Nina and Alec's squabble before it was decided they would sit in the middle, Nina leading the way to their seats. Perhaps this was an accident, or something planned by Alec and Nina (Marcq suspected it was the latter) but Marcq found himself seated between Alec and Adrianna.

He looked pleadingly at Alec who's only response was to shove a bucket of popcorn into his hands. Tikki peeked out from underneath her hiding spot and gestured to the popcorn and blonde girl sitting next to him. "P-p-popcorn?" he asked, offering some to her but accidentally pressing the bucket against her face. "Aagh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that! I hope I didn't punch you. I just thought you wanted some popcorn. Sorry, sorry, sorry sorry."

Nina covered her mouth as she tried to contain her laughter with Alec watching in amusement.

Once settled in their seats while the trailers played on the big screen, Adrianna opened her box of red twizzlers and hoped that maybe sitting by her through the whole movie might make Marcq feel more comfortable around her. He was really cool in class, one of her first friends since that rainy afternoon in fact, so she wanted to get to know him better...if only she could figure out why he seems to want anything but.
For now, he still stuttered with her over a simple popcorn offer and she tried to grin reassuringly but the expression disappeared with a large bucket of popcorn in her face. The soft cardboard bumped against her nose and she squeaked at the sudden contact before Marcq began a nervous explanation and string of apologies. She frowned at Nina for laughing and she was pretty sure she could hear a couple snickers from her purse, so she shifted in a way that would squish her kwami against the back of the seat and gave a patient smile to the mortified boy beside her. "Don't worry about it I'm fine, promise. So...please and thank you." The blonde mumbled--at a polite level for a movie theatre--and gently took the popcorn from Marcq with a slide of their fingers against each other and a small blush of her own.

In truth, she wasn't a big popcorn fan and she found she hadn't eat any of the buttery snack as the last trailer came to a close. Honestly, she'd rather just stick to her twizzlers than keep sneaking pieces of it into her purse for Plagg, but she had a good idea of how to pass the bucket back to someone else. Before the lights went completely dim for the movie, Adrianna whispered to her friends, "Hey watch this!" and promptly tossed a popcorn kernel high above her seat. She didn't care if their eyes were on her or trying to find the popcorn, but being a huge dork, she caught it with a loud crunch of her teeth and no help from her hands at all.
"Hey I taught you that one, you can't take all the credit!" Nina whisper-yelled and Adrianna giggled softly, remembering the time they had emptied an entire jar of jellybeans in Nina's room practicing different ways to catch the small candies in their mouths.
"Fair enough", she smirked. "Get ready."
Another popcorn kernel made a perfect arc over the boys' heads and Nina caught it with a triumphant smile and an in-seat bow before signalling for Adrianna to pass the bucket as the lights went out completely.
The blonde smiled widely with genuine happiness. She was really grateful to be here with them all.

While the glow of the movie's title came up on the silver screen, Adrianna nudged the boy next to her and passed him the popcorn to pass down the line and then once it was out of his grasp, pulled a twizzler out of the open box in her lap and let it bend toward Marcq in her hand between them. "Want one?" she whispered, excited green eyes focused on the opening of Avengers.

The bucket slipped out his grasp with Adrianna's fingers lightly touching his. Marcq froze, unable to process what happened as Adrianna picked out a few pieces of popcorn. Fortunately, Adrianna and Nina performed a little trick which was enough to bring Marcq back to reality.

"Wow, wish Marcq and I could have that kind of coordination," Alec laughed. He jabbed one thumb at Marcq and added, "Guy's got a scary throw. You should've seen him yesterday in gym class, Adrianna. Our team wouldn't have stood a chance in the dodge ball game if we didn't have him."

Marcq glared at Alec and shoved his thumb away, which only made his friend laugh more. He was about to shoot down the idea of him being an ace at throwing (which actually was true) when the movie title came on. Marcq scrunched his face at Alec as he passed the popcorn down to Nina before turning his attention to the Twizzler offered to him. "Th-thanks," he mumbled, plucking the candy from her fingers and taking a bite. His lip curled upwards in another attempt to show his thanks for the candy before settling in for the movie and nibbling on the piece of Twizzlers.

While Marcq enjoyed the movie, he couldn't help but mentally remark how he would have handled the situation if he was in Sokovia. Certainly deflect and use his yo-yo to round up the perps. Definitely not jump on Ultron just to with no plan. Nor just shoot at Quicksilver to stop him. No definitely not that. If he were there he would weave a net to catch the little speedster. Take that, Hawkeye. Alec, on the other hand was more or less ready to rip his hair out from the first fight onward. Marcq and Nina often had to calm him down before he made a commotion in the theater. Fortunately, he got through the entire movie and once out of the theater, Marcq let Alec go full blast on his rant.

"NO! That can not, will not, should not have been the case! NO FREAKING WAY YOU CAN JUST HAVE A SECRET FAMILY THAT LOVES YOU UNCONDITIONALLY LIKE THAT! . . . Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were awesome! They should have their own movie too! I should draw a petition and . . ."

Marcq shook his head in amusement then turned to Adrianna. "So um . . ." he rubbed the back of his neck. "Figure o-out your favorite, yet?"

When Alec brought up yesterday's dodgeball game, Adrianna was reminded of the akuma and she gave a grateful smile to Marcq for at least trying to keep Cody from his less-than-appropriate behavior. It wasn't only her father and the way she was taught to act that kept her from speaking up against the blond, but he was also the only friend she'd really had before going to public school. She didn't like to ever really admit it to herself, but sometimes she does blind herself to the way he treats others because he had been the main reason she was even able to pull off getting into school and meeting others in the first place. No one else would have been able to pull off getting her books and enrollment papers in line as quick as he had and she still felt she had to be grateful for that. So while she rarely said anything to silence Cody, she was glad when others tried.

Throughout the rest of the movie, Plagg peeked out of her purse when he had the chance, whispering to himself about how dramatic everyone is and the stupid ways in which they tried to deter the villains. She didn't often need to silence him thank goodness, for everyone else was preoccupied with keeping Alec quiet. Adrianna was too engrossed in the movie's camerawork and acting flubs to pay much attention to the physics nerd, but when she did it was hilarious.
She agreed with his assertions most of the time, especially when he blew his top as the theater door closed behind him, but the way he phrased it all just made her laugh.
She was taking deep breaths to keep way remaining giggles when Marcq showed up beside her and asked a question. She blinked and looked up at him with wide green eyes. It took her a moment just staring up at him to realize what he'd said.
"Oh! Right, I forgot I told you to ask me...uh...I really like Bruce Banner, but that's mostly because of the first movie..so I gotta say Captain America for sure. He's the classic ideal superhero with mortality and kind intentions to boot..He.. kind of reminds me of--our own Parisian superhero, except with red, white and blue instead of ladybug print ..ehe.." Adrianna blushed a little, and tried to stifle a dreamy smile before it got awkward. "U-um..who was your favorite, Marcq?" she stammered a bit while Nina stayed with Alec. The latter was unaware of Nina's occasional provocations to get him to start up again, good-naturedly pretending to take him seriously between laugh/coughs.

"E-eh? Oh, really?" His lips quirked upward and he caught himself straightening out and standing tall. Adrianna thinks Coccinellidae is cool! She thinks he's cool! And she said he's just like Captain America, the face of S.H.I.E.L.D! How awesome is that? "Ah, h-he's pretty cool. Um, but if I had to choose, um, I'd go with Spiderman. Yeah, Spiderman!" Mentally he screamed at himself because he knew Spiderman wasn't in the movie, but in an ironic twist luck wasn't on his side today and there is no backing out now. "He's awesome. Probably more like Paris' superhero than Captain America. 'Cause they have, um, a similar color scheme, theme, uh, weaponry, and uh . . . um tactics. You know . . . ?" Shut up shut up shut up shut up!

A man with blonde hair and thick rimmed glasses approached the group. He waved once and extended his hand out to each of them shaking Alec's hand the longest. "You're Alec Cesaire? Creator of the LadyBlog?"

"Correct."

"I've read your theory on Akuma and the connection they might have to Ladybug and Cat Noir! Wow does it shed some light on the Paris crime fighting duo. Such an amazing eye opener!" The man grinned. "I work for Le Monde and I'm wondering if I can use your blog as a source in this article I'm writing. If you do, I'll put in a good word with my boss and see if they can offer you an official column, given your extensive coverage of Ladybug and Cat Noir."

"Really? That would be cool! My own official column with—wait a minute," Alec narrowed his eyes at the man. "I know you; you're Raoul Skeeter, Paris' infamous false journalist."

Raoul looked taken aback. He waved if off with a scoff. "'False'? My boy, I have experience, credentials. My articles are published in Paris' most renowned papers. Anybody would take my word over a fifteen year old boy whose tools are his phone and his mother's computer."

Raoul pushed Alec in the chest and Marcq swore the ends of his friend's hair turned a darker shade of red. "Yeah, anybody who's dumb enough to believe your lies." Alec stomped up to Raoul, pulling up his sleeves and hands in a fist. Fortunately, Marcq stepped between them just in time.

"Stop it, break it up." Marcq took Alec by the shoulders and led him away from the older man, beckoning for Nina and Adrianna to follow. Marcq wrinkled his nose when he saw Raoul's expression when Adrianna passed by. It was almost like he was scheming something. Once the girls had caught up and they were far away from the man, Marcq let go of Alec who crossed his arms as he marched alongside them.

"Who's Raoul Skeeter?" asked Nina.

"Really, really corrupt journalist who writes a lot of false articles," Alec replied. "I don't know if he really works for Le Monde, but basically, anything and everything he covers is made to look really bad. I think at one point he wrote about Adrianna's family too."

"What?" both Marcq and Nina said in unison, looking at Adrianna. He couldn't really have written anything bad about the Agreste family. Did he?

At her embarrassing mention of her head-over-heels crush, Marcq seemed to brighten up a bit. She hoped it meant their conversation could continue and he could relax enough to let it. His answer to the question didn't include the movie they'd just watched but she didn't mind; her head was already back to fawning about him as Marcq compared him to Spiderman. She looked up at her taller dark-haired friend and smiled excitedly. She'd never made the connection to Spiderman but the more she thought about it, the more comparisons she could make. She wondered if her partner had thought about how much like Spiderman he was. She was glad at least the media wasn't anywhere near as bad for him as it was for the fictional webhead.
When Adrianna started to open her mouth and voice her thoughts, fully ready to engage in a conversation of shared interest in a certain spotted superhero, she found that in her dreamy state she'd missed Marcq turning his attention to some guy talking to Alec a little behind them. So she turned too and listened, smiling at what he had to say. She was sure it meant a lot for Alec to hear such praise about his blog getting recognized as real journalism. However, just as everyone started to get excited about Alec's possible new opportunity, Alec stopped midsentence with a suddenly suspicious look on his face.
"I know you; you're Raoul Skeeter, Paris' infamous false journalist."
Adrianna's smile faded as he said the name out loud, trying to remember exactly why it triggered a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach...Skeeter...the name sounded familiar...
She remembered who the man was and why she'd never known his face when he suddenly shoved her friend and he stumbled back with Nina at his side. A flare of rage and instinct to protect erupted in her chest and she stepped forward to get between the guys, but Marcq seemed one step ahead of her, quieting the squabble before Alec could let his temper win out. She almost wished he had been able to and she glared viciously as she walked away last, restraining herself from clawing Skeeter's eyes out. Plagg stirred in her purse and she imagined it was because he was so ready to let her grow claws and do so immediately.
Her friends had more sense, but they also pay attention, especially Alec. Once the gang was out of Skeeter's sight, green eyes snapped up to the other three, all asking questions about her..family. The word tensed her shoulders and she visibly and verbally clammed up. She wished she could find a suitable segue like most other times she can avoid talking about home life in public, but they all waited on an explanation.

"Uh..Yeah" The blonde averted her eyes and bit her lip, trying to think up something new talk about. "Father had it taken down as soon as he'd read it, but not before I could. It was...rotten, what he wrote. You couldn't even call it journalism," she mumbled.

Said article had been published online soon after the time Stoneheart had first showed up and she became Cat Noir. And it couldn't have come at a better time considering her need for freedom trying to go to school that day, then the costume proved an amazing outlet for her emotions.
And boy had she been emotional when she read it, saw the pictures and instantly knew why her father got it deleted so quickly. That bastard Skeeter wrote about her mom posing scantily, and though Adrianna had scrolled through countless pictures of her mom that she could tell it was her face photoshopped on other naked women, she was initially terrified about the other contents of the piece. She could remember one line all to clearly: "For all we know, Little-Miss-Perfect Agreste got herself too caught up in the porn industry and landed in a risky sex trafficking ring. Which would explain why she never returned and probably never will." The worst thing was that she had no idea it wasn't true at first. How could she know who Skeeter was back in her sheltered mansion bubble? She had to look up what porn was that day because how would she know?! How could she know that there isn't some truth to it to this day?

Adrianna grit her teeth and shook her bangs out of her face to reveal a simply annoyed eye roll, refusing to let it get to her in the middle of a movie theater lobby. Besides it had been a long time since the first weeks of school. Perhaps Skeeter was only just starting to get articles published again. She was a little shocked that it only took him months rather than years to recover from the legal issues Father had thrown his way.
"Alec, on the other hand, is going to be an amazing, honest journalist one day and if the grand writer Cesaire will allow me the chance, I'll read his newest blog post in his best friend's bakery with a nice latte in my other hand." Adri smirked and placed one hand on her hip, a convincingly confident pose if the cameras were looking.
But it was Nina and the boys who were watching and the former could tell the blonde was desperate to let the subject drop, even if her best friend wished she knew the details. "Right, we wanted to totally go for the cafe after the movie. You guys ready to head out?" The brunette stepped forward toward the doors expectantly with Adrianna by her side.

"Yikes," said Marcq, while Alec wrinkled his nose in disgust. "What was it—" Marcq was interrupted by Nina nudging him in the side and jerking her head at Adrianna. Drop it, she seemed to say. Adrianna didn't seem bothered telling everyone of her family's scandal with Skeeter, but it was obvious this was a sensitive subject for Adrianna.

"Alec, on the other hand, is going to be an amazing, honest journalist one day and if the grand writer Cesaire will allow me the chance, I'll read his newest blog post in his best friend's bakery with a nice latte in my other hand."

"W-what? You guys want to go to my bakery?" Marcq asked.

"Right, we wanted to totally go for the cafe after the movie. You guys ready to head out?"

"I'm game," said Alec, following after the girls. "Got any new sweets to try?"

"Oh. Okay, sure. W-we got moon cakes this weekend for the Chinese New Year if you guys want some."

At Nina and Alec's nod of encouragement, he led them towards Tom and Sabine's Boulangerie Pattisserie while the others chatted about the movie, Marcq occasionally popping in now and then. They arrived just as the last of the dinner rush hour left, Marcq opening the door to let them all in. Inside the bakery was covered in red and gold. Paper lanterns hung all over the place, a red couplet hung on the door, red Chinese paper cuttings decorated the counters, and on every table was a vase with peonies. The counter was full of pastries yet to be eaten; cakes and cookies, bread, muffins, even the mooncakes were on display right next to a line of ladybug and black cat frosted sugar cookies.

"Hey, Mom," said Marcq, waving to his mother Sabine as she closed the cash drawer.

"Aah, Marcq, you're home. Did you guys have fun?" she replied, waving back. Marcq nodded and moved around the counter to join her, noticing a bowl of frosting sitting on the table in the back. She smiled at his friends. "Hello Alec. And hello to you girls." She said towards Nina and Adrianna. "I don't believe we've met before, I'm Mrs. Dupain-Cheng, Marcq's mother. And your names are?" she turned to Marcq, smacking his hand as he reached a finger inside for a dab of frosting. He looked at his mother sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Um, that's Nina and that's Adrianna Agreste," he said. "Uh, Nina, Adrianna, my mom."

"Adrianna Agreste! I know you, Marcq talks about you a lot."

"MOM!"

"Would you like anything?" she gestured at the counter with the choices they could choose from, including the New Year's specials.

Adrianna tuned back into the conversation and shook away stray memories as the others started to follow Nina out of the theater. Marcq mentioned the Chinese New Year and her eyes brightened a bit. When she had started the school year there were a lot of things she didn't know about what kids her age do on their free time outside of their homes, like concerts and arcades, but the Chinese New Year was something she understood. The Chinese lessons she takes at home also include knowledge about the culture so she was excited to try the moon cakes she'd only ever read about. Especially since she doesn't get sweets very often anyway. She was going to ask Marcq what he was going to do to celebrate the lunar new year, but Alec roped her into a compelling analysis of some of the character's motivations and she simply couldn't resist. In fact, she got so caught up in the discussion that she didn't realize they'd arrived to the bakery right next to the school until everyone stopped and Marcq opened the door for them. She smiled up at him in thanks as she walked in.
The smile ended up staying plastered on her face when she saw the decorations all over the bakery's interior, especially the paper lanterns and the peonies. The actual sweets however, caught her attention and kept it longer than the decorations. She immediately spotted the ladybug cookie and licked her lips. She'd never been surrounded by so many sugary pastries before! (Well except that one photoshoot with the candy everywhere, but that had been fake so it doesn't count). She couldn't believe she'd never been inside this place before. She had jumped off this roof multiple times to get to the school if there was trouble, but she'd never been inside the building until now.
Adrianna stepped forward with the others and Marcq introduced her to his mom. She was about to stick her hand out to shake the short woman's hand, but before the woman could hold out her own hand, it went to smack Marcq's for trying to score some frosting. The blonde giggled softly and pulled back her hand to cover her mouth. Then Marcq mentioned her name to her and she cocked her head slightly at the response. Why would Marcq talk about her any more than Nina or his other classmates. Nina rolled her eyes with a knowing smile but Adrianna chose to ignore the expression when Mrs. Dupain-Cheng offered pastries.
Standing in front of Alec and Nina at the counter, she thought what the heck and glanced up at the menu even though she knew what she wanted. "Can I please order a Ladybug cookie, a mooncake and small caramel latte please?" She looked down at her hip to open up her purse, snagged her debit card and subtly rolled her eyes at Plagg who was doing a tiny happy dance. He was going to get more sugar and he knew it. She handed her card to Mrs. Dupain-Cheng and gave her a grateful smile. "By the way, 新年快乐*. I love the decorations."

"Aah, 也祝你新年快乐!*" Sabine replied, clapping her hands together and a bright smile on her face. Marcq gave her an inquisitive look and she quickly translated what she said in French for him to understand. She punched in Adrianna's order and swiped her card before handing it back to the model. Marcq automatically got to work and pulled out Adrianna's requested items while Sabine got the others their orders.

"H-here you go," said Marcq, handing Adrianna the pastries and drink. His eyes bulged when his fingers barely brushed against hers for the second time that day and half ran, half walked to help his mom with Nina and Alec. When finished, Nina led the group to sit around one of the tables where they can converse and chat with each other.

"Marcq, will you be here? Is it okay if I leave the bakery to you?" Sabine asked. Marcq nodded and Sabine waved to the others before she left.

"The Chinese New Year is a big thing in your family, huh?" asked Nina, admiring the decorations. "You're mom do all this?"

"No, it was me. We try to keep up with my mom's heritage, especially in a French bakery. Maybe I over did it a little." He chuckled sheepishly. "So, um, how's the food? Do the, uh, cookies taste okay?"

Adrianna found Mrs. Dupain-Cheng's smile contagious and beamed at her enthusiasm while the mother translated for her son. It seemed every time she encountered the family in or out of the bakery, they were so...happy. They were a seemingly perfect example of small, but happy family and though she tried her best not to let it get to her in a negative way, her heart gave a painful twinge to remind her she once had a family like that. The charming son returned with her order soon after and she smiled, trying to coax a less anxious expression from him as their fingers brushed but he about-faced and left her wondering again as she followed Nina to a table for them. Maybe he was still doubtful about that gum on his seat on the first day of school and he felt awkward being nice to her in case she's been lying this whole time? Adrianna bit her lip. He has to know she means no one any harm...
As Mrs. Dupain-Cheng sauntered upstairs, leaving the bakery to her son to manage, Marcq joined his friends and Adrianna took a bite of the Ladybug cookie, hesitating at first because she didn't want to mess up such a pretty design, but the taste was well worth ruining the artistry. Adrianna closed her eyes with delight and savored the sugar on her tongue. Candy and pastries all in one day! She couldn't get enough so when Marcq asked about the taste, she swallowed and did her best to reign in her over-the-top enthusaism to say, "They're delicious, Marcq." Her wide green eyes scanned the bakery's decorations again and she blinked at him with newfound awe at his artful skills. "You made these as well as the decorations? Great job!" She smiled and sneaked a piece of the cookie to her purse before Plagg could start grumbling at her.
"Yeah, he helped make the mooncakes too." Alec bragged about his friend, trying to help out his starstruck bro while sipping his coffee with a sly grin.
"So that means you and your family are going to celebrate it together soon, right? When is it? Is it like a party or...?" Nina asked, eyes bright, always trying to sag a chance at a good party or a DJing gig. Adrianna listened, but her mouth was not without cookie at any given time, so she didn't dare interrupt.

"Oh, y-yeah, thank you. It wasn't too bad. I kinda, uh, liked doing it," he stuttered, rubbing the back of his burning neck. He was ecstatic she liked his decorations. Most of the paper crafts were made by him with a few from his parents or relatives. Of course some of the decorations were bought, such as the red couplet and the small dragon plaque that hung underneath the register but Marcq knew it all added to the atmosphere of the upcoming holiday. He also took great pride in the cookies. They first appeared after the Bubbler incident, Marcq's father asking him to design two different cookies to represent Paris' new superheroes whose recognition had spread. Coccinellidae's was easy; all Marcq had to do was transform and look at his ring. Cat Noir's was tougher since her miraculous was hidden underneath her blonde hair, but during the the Sir WiFi incident, Marcq managed to get a glimpse of her earrings after pulling Cat Noir out of the freezer. The designs set, he and his father baked and decorated a few batches to be placed on the counter the next day. And they sold like hotcakes. The cookies were most loved by little kids; Manon, the little girl he occasionally babysits, always asked her mother buy her a few cookies to take home.

"Aah, well . . . uh I didn't do much for the mooncakes. My dad does all the hard work; I just time it and arrange them neatly on the counter. They're difficult to make which is why the're for special occasions."

"So that means you and your family are going to celebrate it together soon, right? When is it? Is it like a party or...?" asked Nina.

"Yep, and it's this Sunday, the twenty-second. As for it being a party, kind of but not really. Usually we're just here, manning the bakery. Sometimes we'll go to Triangle de Choisy to watch the parade if it's really slow. But we really don't do much. It's not easy when you own a bakery"

Nina looked dejected. She was really hoping it would be some sort of exciting festival she could provide music for. Maybe have everyone dance as they munched on delicious Dupain-Cheng goodies.

"We'll light some ground fireworks after dinner. We always do that every year. Um, you guys can come to if you'd like, and maybe bring music."

"That sounds fun. I could even update the school blog with some stuff about the Chinese New Year," said Alec. He took a bite out of his cinnamon roll when his eyes grew wide, as if he remembered something. "Uh oh. Speaking of school blog, I need to update it on the fire incident from yesterday. I totally forgot about it after meeting Cat Noir. Bro, mind giving me a doggie bag for these?" Alec held up the cinnamon roll and coffee while Marcq jumped behind the counter and pulled out a napkin and paper bag for Alec to throw his food in. "Nina, you're coming with me. I need to interview you as witness to Cat Noir."

"Aww, really? But I haven't even finished my eclair yet," Nina whined. Marcq handed her a bag which she grudgingly stuffed her food in. "I had fun on our day off today. I'm coming to your New Year's celebration, Marcq. And I'll bring in some awesome music too. Bye, Anni, text me when you get home!"

Marcq waved goodbye to the two as they rushed off to work on Alec's school blog entry. Then Alec looked back, pointed at the bakery and winked. Marcq gave him a confused look, then realized Adrianna was still in the bakery. With Him. Alone. Face tomato red, he called for Alec and Nina to come back, but they merely laughed, Alec giving him a thumbs up sign. Marcq hung his head in defeat and turned back to Adrianna. From inside his blazer he could feel Tikki gently pushing him towards her. He approached, his cheeks hotter and hotter with each step. He shoved his hands in his pockets, looking anywhere but Adrianna.

"S-so, um, are y-you going to go home too? J-just waiting to be picked up?" He briefly glanced at the girl, noticing the picture of an older woman on her phone. "Um, is-is that your mom?

Adrianna smiled at Marcq's shy admission to enjoying his parents' trade, then paid attention to the others as they conversed about the Chinese New Year. She kept quiet, thoroughly enjoying the pastries she'd bought. Her nutritionist would kill her for this, but today she couldn't care less. When Marcq specified the date for the event and that they could come, she subtly traded Plagg a tiny piece of the sweet mooncake for her phone before closing her purse again and setting a reminder for the celebration. She wouldn't be able to stay too long since she had patrol with Coccinellidae that night, but she loves fireworks and she wouldn't miss another opportunity to see her friends on a free day.
She meant to offer Alec assistance on the Chinese New Year post in case he needed extra facts or anything, but her mouth was full of mooncake and he started rushing when he remembered he had to update his blog about the school fire. That reminded her that she should probably figure out how she was going to return home herself so she picked up her phone again and set a quick text to the Gorilla, reminding him of where she was in case he'd forgotten. It was very unlikely of him to forget things like this since Natalie always kept him on schedule, but his response revealed that he'd been on a slew of impromptu errands for her dad today and that he's across town at the moment.
{From Gorille, 2:30 PM: I can be there in about a hour. Is that okay?}
{To Gorille, 2:31 PM: That's fine. Thank you.}
she typed, and gave a polite wave to Nina as she headed out. However, her eyes didn't leave her phone, as she'd accidentally tapped the photo gallery icon as she'd been closing the text conversation.

The last time she'd had the gallery open she'd been looking through the hidden album full of pictures of her mom, so consequently, she was bombarded with those pictures now and couldn't seem to keep her thumb from flipping through them, paying little to no attention to her surroundings anymore. The earlier run in with Skeeter had bothered her more than she'd let on as her other hand started gripping the edge of the table too hard. Had she seen that article, wherever she was? Did it prevent her from coming back in any way? Keep her from returning to her daughter? Adrianna wondered what her mother would have said about her being in love...would she have given her advice? Would she have smiled if she told her his smile reminded Adrianna of hers...the way the right side goes crooked and exudes such a radiant, contagious warmth she can't help but smile back? What would Coccinellidae say if he ever got to meet Mrs. Agreste?
"...is that your mom?" he'd wonder...
"..you have her smile" she mumbled to her hero in a daze, but at the same time came: "You have her smile."

Shining green eyes blinked, widened and their owner slowly looked up at the guy beside her, mind going haywire.

kept repeating itself in her head for about two seconds as her entire face flushed scarlet and she stood up too quickly, stuffing her phone back in her purse a bit too harshly for Plagg's liking. A small hiss was his only complaint but no one heard it as she immediately burst out with
"I-I was just texting my driver! He uh-- he said he'd be here in about a hour. Sorry is that okay? I don't mean to impose.." She bit her lip, fidgeting with her fingers nervously as her blush faded to a dark pink.

Marcq watched her thumb through the pictures of the woman. He noticed how alike she looked to Adrianna, practically a mirror image. They even had a similar hairstyle; whilst Adrianna pulled her hair in a side braid on her right shoulder, the woman pulled hers in a simple ponytail on her left. Though not as intricate as her daughter's, it still gave of a sense of beauty and regal.

"You have her smile," he said.

". . . you have her smile"

Marcq jumped, realizing what he just said as his cheeks burned for what felt like the umpteenth time that day. I did not just say that, I did not just say that, I did not just say that. Marcq wasn't even aware she had said the same thing. He didn't mean to say it. He just thought how much Adrianna looked like the woman and it just . . . slipped out. Adrianna herself seemed startled by his sudden appearance, jumping out of her seat and stuffing her phone in her purse. Did he see something he was not supposed to? Was he intruding on something private and special to Adrianna? She always addressed her father whenever he or even his face was around, never her mother. He wasn't sure what the details were concerning the lack of appearances on Adrianna's mom, but Marcq got the feeling this wasn't any of his business.

"I-I was just texting my driver! He uh—he said he'd be here in about a hour. Sorry is that okay? I don't mean to impose . . . ."

"No problem. Haha okay, bye." Pivoting on one foot, he dashed behind the counter and disappeared to the back of the bakery. As soon as the door closed, Tikki popped out from underneath his blazer and gave him a look. Marcq pouted, turning to the cooling racks carrying tomorrow's batch of cookies. "Don't look at me like that. I panicked."

"It is a little rude to leave guests unattended." She peeked out the window, and then floated back towards him. "Hey, this is a perfect opportunity to get to know her better."

"And what do you think we could do? Sit around in silence until her ride comes home?" he asked sarcastically. Tikki nodded at the cookies—some of them still had yet to be decorated. Marcq looked between her and the cookies, already knowing what she had in mind. "Wait—"

"It's not too late." She pushed him towards the door then whispered, "you never know until you try."

Marcq stood frozen for one long moment, then vigorously nodded and patted his cheek. He marched out of the kitchen and back towards Adrianna.

"S-sorry for that." He paused. "Er, um, w-would you like to see how w-we decorate our cookies?"

Marcq was apparently embarrassed as well for she wasn't the only one blushing. And then he left rather abruptly, leaving her stung at the empty bakery table. He'd said it was no problem that she stay, but clearly he had a problem with it or he wouldn't have gone to the back like that... Adrianna sighed and picked up her trash from the table, dunking it the garbage can and giving a wistful glance at the doors he disappeared through before sitting down at the abandoned table again with a dejected look on her face.
Plagg popped out of her purse, tail-a-swishing, "Dang that kid's got it baad...Hey got any Camembert?"
"For the umpteenth time, if you didn't find any in there, I don't have any more. Besides, I just fed you, greedy cat."
"Yes, but I have a more refined palate than other kwamis who eat cookies and cake all day. Are we just gonna wait a whole hour for your ride to get here?"
"Yeah. and no more complaining. Someone might hear.." The blonde sighed and propped her chin up o the heel of her palm. "I just don't get it...he was so nice at the movie theater...do you think he's still mad about the chewing gum incident? I've been trying to make it up to him, but without Alec or Nina around, it's like he avoids me. Does he even want to be my friend?"
"Of course not! The kid's head over--"
Adrianna gasped as she heard the kitchen doors opening again "Ssh!" she pushed Plagg back down and snapped her purse shut before Marcq approached the table again. She looked up at him with a timid smile when he spoke, apologizing for his sudden disappearance.
"Er, um, w-would you like to see how w-we decorate our cookies?"
Adrianna's eyes widened and her smile grew at the corners.
"O-oh yes. That sounds really cool!" She bit her lip for a second. "Are you...sure it'd be okay?"
After all if he really doesn't want me around I shouldn't jump at the chance if it's just something he'd have to offer to be polite...

"Oh, y-yeah it's fine," he replied, relieved she didn't say no. "M-my parents are okay with me bringing friends to the back as long as we don't wreck a-anything and I'm mindful of the front. Alec has been here a lot, so my parents trust me. Okay, um, cookies!"

He set a bell on the register for before leading her into the kitchen. He pointed at a hook near the door for her to hang her purse if she wanted to. Marcq felt Tikki gently patting his back, as if to say you're doing great Marcq. Just be yourself. He smiled to himself. Tikki is right. All he needs to do is just talk, show her how everything works and that's it. He can do this. No stuttering, red faced, temperamental Marcq here!

"Welcome to the Boulangerie Patisserie kitchen," he said, opening the door for the both of them. "Where everything is handmade from scratch. Of course you probably guessed that since this is a kitchen and a bakery and uh it says on the front uh . . ." Don't lose yourself! He took a deep breath and approached a large oven currently baking two trays of cookies. Next to it was a rack with several more trays of cookies that needed to be baked. I guess Mom wants me to work on these too, he thought. The oven dinged, Marcq automatically knowing the first batch was done. "Mind if I take this out first? It'll just be a minute." He retrieved a pair of oven mitts. "Stand back; it can get hot." He opened the door and pulled out the two trays. Marcq set them on a cooling rack and placed the new ones in the oven then set the timer.

"This oven is for our pastries and baked sweets. Bread has a different oven altogether. Any . . . any question?"

Adrianna's eyes brightened on the word 'friends' and she smiled on her way to the kitchen with him. So he really does consider her a friend...what a relief! she thought and politely declined the silent offer to hang up her purse. As much as she wanted to leave Plagg away from any kitchen if she could help it, it's always better to be safe than sorry so keeping the mischievous kwami around was a necessity, even if Marcq thought it a little weird.
"Welcome to the Boulangerie Patisserie kitchen," he said, opening the door for the both of them.
The smell of fresh bread and baked sweets filled her nose immediately. It was more prominent back here than in the front of the store and she couldn't get enough of it. It almost smelled familiar, but she couldn't place where she might have caught a whiff of this scent before... The ding of one of the ovens abruptly ended her search through her memories and brought her back to the present. She shook her head in answer to his question and obediently stepped back before Marcq brought out some more warm cookies. Her mouth watered and the scent wafted through the kitchen. She took a deep breath and grinned. She'd have to find a cookie-scented candle for her room one of these days.
Marcq set some more unbaked cookies in before setting the timer, though she briefly wished she could have sampled the cookie dough. The bakers' son knew what he was doing however, and he looked confident doing it. She liked that expression. When Marcq needs something done, he does it and when he needs help, those around him are more than willing to assist. It's a quality she admires in him because her only friend for a long time is still the type to boss people around because he can, regardless of their situation.
Marcq turned toward her again and she straightened up as he spoke, informing her on the ovens and reminding her about something she'd been curious about for awhile.
"Actually yes.. um. I know you guys make everything from scratch so...does that also include the frosting? Is there just a whole stash with every color somewhere?" It felt a bit childish to ask something so silly but she couldn't help feeling a little excited about some big cupboard full of a rainbow of frosting colors!

"A-actually, yes! It's this way." He crossed the kitchen towards a large steel refrigerator. He opened one door to show shelves filled with tubs and bottles of frosting in a variety of colors—reds to blues, whites, violets, oranges, buttercream and cream cheese, and even chocolate frosting. All of them were organized by date and color, courtesy of his mom.

"We usually make them once every two weeks; s-sometimes more depending on special orders." He took one squeeze bottle filled with green frosting labeled 'Cat Noir Green.' "Haha, I'm actually in charge of making them; ever since I was nine. At that time, Mom and Dad decided that would be a good way I could help out instead of risking getting burned." He tapped the label with his finger. "As you can probably guess, I'm going to use this color for the Cat Noir cookies."

He also grabbed a tub filled with black frosting and laid them out on the table in the center of the kitchen along with a tray of undecorated sugar cookies. He washed his hands then grabbed knife and apron. The moment he got started on decorating, all his attention was turned towards the cookie in front of him. It was like everything disappeared, even Adrianna. He started with the black frosting, scooping a dollop and drawing a circle with the knife in one smooth motion. Then taking the bottle, he drew four ovals followed by a large rounded triangle in the very center to make that signature paw print he knew so well. In a matter of minutes, the cookie was done and ready to be placed on the counter with all the other ones just waiting to be bought. He stood back and admired his work. Perfect. Or as Kitty would say, purrfect, he mused.

"And that's how we decorate our cookies. It's pretty e-easy for me now. Well, the superhero designs specifically. Around Christmas time, it gets more complicated." He slid the Cat Noir cookie for her to look at. He paused, rubbing the back of his neck then asking, "W-want to give it a try? Decorating cookies I mean?"

Adrianna audibly let out a brief, surprised gasp when he confirmed her silly assumption and nearly bounced behind him as he led her to the rainbow stash she'd half-imagined. The real thing was way better though and her jaw dropped when the steel refrigerator door opened like the pearly gates and her eyes sparkled with childish glee.

"We usually make them once every two weeks; s-sometimes more depending on special orders." She followed his hands with her gaze as he took one squeeze bottle filled with green frosting labeled 'Cat Noir Green.' and smiled like a cheshire cat for just a moment. "Haha, I'm actually in charge of making them; ever since I was nine. At that time, Mom and Dad decided that would be a good way I could help out instead of risking getting burned." She nodded in a that makes sense sort of way before he tapped the label with his finger. "As you can probably guess, I'm going to use this color for the Cat Noir cookies."

She giggled softly with barely restrained excitement and followed the boy with the big bottles of frosting in each hand back to the middle of the kitchen. He looked like this was all simple routine, going through the motions of washing his hands, grabbing his tools ad everything. She followed suit and washed her hands after him. While he put on his clearly used apron, she couldn't help but feel a pretty honored as Cat Noir to have the Dupain-Chengs benefiting from her superhero escapades with cookies made in her image.
She dried her hands a bit with a few shakes of her hands in the sink as he began decorating the first cookie with a layer of black frosting. Adrianna looked on intently, watching eyes wide as his hand squeezed the green frosting bottle with practiced fingers and an intensely focused look on his face. She grinned when he was done and placed it on the counter with the others. If she had been wearing her cat ears, she definitely would have commented, Purrfect
When he stepped back to the counter, Adrianna expected him to start on the next one immediately, but instead he gave her a look and said
"And that's how we decorate our cookies. It's pretty e-easy for me now. Well, the superhero designs specifically. Around Christmas time, it gets more complicated."
"Wow.." she whispered and examined the cookie up close. Running a bakery was certainly a lot of work, but this part seemed super fun. As if he could read her thoughts, Marcq offered to let her give it a try and she shot up, back ramrod straight and smile huge. "Would I?!" she blinked, realizing how loud and weird that probably was. "I-I mean, yeah. Yeah sure. Thanks!" Adrianna smiled a bit nervously and gulped when he eventually gave her a cookie and the tools to decorate it with. The blonde shook her braid behind her back and leaned down unnecessarily close to it, lip between her teeth in an unintentionally adorable expression of narrowed green eyes with way too much enthusiasm for something so simple. She got the black frosting layer on just fine, thinking this is so cool!
But when she got to the actual decorating part with the green bottle, starting with the bigger part of the paw, her face morphed into an expression of nostalgia with furrowed, worried eyebrows. Her eyes were somewhere else remembering a time when her hands were smaller, decorating cupcakes in a different kitchen with someone else "Maman I did it!"
...Someone with a softer, sweeter voice and the gentlest hands in the whole world...

The frosting bottle made a startling fart noise when her hands unconsciously tightened into fists and forced a large dollop of frosting over her ruined cookie. Adrianna gasped and dropped the frosting beside the green mess she made, straightening up and taking a quick step back with her hands pulled back swiftly to her chest. "Oh no!" she exclaimed, moving her hands so they covered her face and kept them from making more mistakes. "I ruined it! I'm so sorry Marcq..." her hands flitted behind her back in fists, so he could see the sincere apology in her eyes. "I-it..came out faster than I thought it would... heh.. I'd thought with my meager video game skills, my hands would be better at this, but...oh gosh I'm really sorry." she tried in vain to lighten the mood again, but she was sure she'd failed and grimaced, keeping her eyes away from the disaster of a cookie she'd created, red faced and thoroughly shamed after giving Marcq yet another reason to dislike her.

Marcq smiled at Adrianna's enthusiasm to try her hand at cookie decorating. He nodded once, albeit a little more curt than he intended. Hopefully it didn't come off wrong. Last thing he needed was for Adrianna to think he didn't want her to. The fact that she said yes to decorating cookies boosted his confidence, helping him to be less of that bumbling idiot and able to hold even a proper conversation with her. He retrieved another cookie for her to try and handed her the tools and frosting.

She moved her braid out of the way and got to work, leaning unnecessarily close to the cookie. Marcq stifled a chuckle at that. He leaned against the table across from her, chin resting on the palm of his hand as he watched. Her eyes narrowed, biting her lip as she spread a layer of black frosting. It was a serious expression, a little too serious for spreading frosting. Was this how she looked like during class assignments? He'd never been able to see it until now because he always sat directly behind her, so usually he only saw her lovely blonde hair. Still, it was the cutest thing he ever saw.

He grew dreamy-eyed just thinking that was her concentration face, half paying attention to the slight furrowing of her brows. Suddenly there was a loud farting noise, startling him back from his daydream.

"Oh no! I ruined it! I'm so sorry Marcq... I-it..came out faster than I thought it would... heh.. I'd thought with my meager video game skills, my hands would be better at this, but...oh gosh I'm really sorry."

Marcq looked at the cookie; it was beyond saving. The large glob of green frosting covered the entire cookie to the point where it started to drip onto the table. Adrianna was visibly upset, hands behind her back as she looked at him apologetically.

"Hey, hey, it's no problem," he said quickly. "It's your first time too, it's understandable. I myself have messed up loads of times, even now and I'm the baker's son." He pointed his thumb at himself, smiling in his own attempt to lighten the mood. He broke the cookie in half, handing one piece to Adrianna. "We can just eat it. Nothing wasted that way. Um, want to try Coccinellidae's design? It's a little easier than Cat Noir's in my opinion." He picked out a new cookie and grabbed a tub labeled 'Coccinellidae Red' and a squeeze bottle of black frosting. He gestured at the supplies before them, trying to get her to give it another go. She still looked reluctant, saying she didn't want to ruin another one of their cookies.

Marcq didn't want her to feel bad about it; she was so eager to try decorating now she didn't even want to touch it. He stared at the supplies and then her fists. Then he got an idea, but his face turned tomato red.

"I-I can h-help you if y-you l-like," he offered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Y-yeah, I can guide you in decorating cookies. I-I-I mean help, you know um, helping. I-I don't mind, I do it all the time with M-Manon, this girl I babysit so it won't be difficult. Um, if-if you want to that is." He shrugged, looking away as his stuttering habit came back to him.

Despite expecting to be kicked out of the kitchen for wasting a whole cookie and frosting to boot, Marcq didn't even look mad for a moment. When she looked back up at him again, he was telling her it was totally fine and that he still messes up, which admittedly made her feel a tiny bit better. Adrianna tried to mirror his unique smile as he broke the mess of a cookie in half and handed her a piece. "...Thanks." It was really funny looking honestly, but even if she didn't feel so guilty anymore, she wasn't sure she wanted to try again. He got he frosting colors anyway though and while she chewed on her piece of overly frosted cookie, her eyes widened briefly to see her partner's preferred name written on the red tube. He must know it from Alec.

He set them on the table before her, but she kept her hands away from the counter even as he gestured for her to give it another go. "I dunno. I don't wanna ruin another one." she bit her lip nervously and closed her now empty hands into harmless fists.

However, he didn't give up on her, which made her meet his nervous blue eyes with admiration and gratitude. It seemed silly; he was just trying to cheer her up and help her out like he had that little girl she had posed with in the park after defeating Stormy Weather, but small as the gesture might seem to others, she appreciated it more than he knew. She did notice his stuttering again though and she was still a little afraid he was nervous that she would mess up again too, but surely if he helped her out, it couldn't turn out that bad, right?

"O-okay..sure. Thanks, Marcq." she smiled genuinely and stepped closer to the new frosting tube, even if a bit anxious.
