::History:: When James was a child, his parents worried over him constantly. It's not as if they were overprotective or as if he had some sort of physical affliction that could get him in trouble. No, it was because of the fact that he never seemed to act like regular children. He wasn't sociable, he didn't crave the love and affection of his parents, and he almost always seemed indifferent to what happened around him. And as much as they loved him, James' parents were almost two steps away to reporting him to the society, fearing that he had an unknown illness.

Thankfully, he was saved when he met his grandfather, Avery Dale. Despite not connecting with anyone else, James adored his grandfather and spent most of his time with the old man, even when Alzheimer's struck the eldest Dale's mind. His parents were relieved at how their son interacted with his grandfather and so they did not report him and instead began to accept the fact that their son might have been a little slower than everyone else.
James was not in fact, slow. He just had a hard time connecting with others and reciprocating their feelings. None of this bothered him, however, because he preferred isolation.

He wasn't always alone however. When he entered school he met a pair of siblings named Marcus and Gabrielle and despite how cold and stoic he seemed, they clung to him anyway and they soon became fast friends. One sibling however, clung to him in a different way than the other. Gabrielle Finn was a tenacious girl and she decided soon after she met him, that James was her one true love. James being who he was, was completely oblivious to her feelings and as the years went on, she became increasingly frustrated at the lack of reciprocation, and finally she snapped and physically confronted him. She pushed him against a wall, ignored her brother who was present at the time, and kissed James.

That was the day when James lost one of his only two friends and subsequently realized that he was not interested in romance. At all.
