  • NAME
    Artemis "Ari" Smith

    AGE
    28

    SEX
    Female

    APPEARANCE
Ari stands at a mean 5'7" with pale skin and golden brown short hair. She's known for never letting her hair grow past her ears--even if she has to cut it herself. She generally wears a rather unforgiving expression, although she certainly has a sense of humor. Ari likes to keep her wardrobe to the basic whites, greys, and blacks, although she sometime throws in a splash of color for the hell of it.

  • PERSONALITY
Calculating and logical, Artemis tried to abandon the "dead weight" of emotions from an early age, believing them to be inhibitions to the rationale of the human mind. She failed spectacularly, especially with her penchant for an irritation towards the general populace. She has little tolerance for anyone she doesn't like, and she won't take pains to cater to idiots (i.e. almost everyone). She's arrogant and pretentious, although she has the good trait of being unfailingly loyal to those whom she trusts.

Among her friends and family, she tends to open up a bit, as if a great weight has lifted off her shoulders (surprise: she's secretly insecure as hell). She's known to even crack a few jokes--although they're still laced with sarcasm most of the time. However, if anyone were to break her trust, they would likely never earn it again. She holds grudges like nobody's business. Although she considers herself an honest woman, many people claim that she has the nasty habit of bending the truth for her own benefit. They aren't entirely wrong. Cunning and shrewd, she's willing to do what she thinks it will take to achieve her goals, even if it means stepping on a few "idiots" along the way.

    HISTORY
Artemis "Ari" Smith began life with everything handed to her on a silver platter stained with blood. Dramatic, right? Well, it wasn't quite that way for her. Before she was even born, her older sister Diana (her eccentric parents had an odd obsession with the goddess of the hunt) was brutally murdered. Her parents, wealthy and now paranoid, demanded that their second daughter be trained to defend herself. And she was. Not that she ever complained, as she considered it to be a useful skill as life went on.

Her father, a wealthy businessman, and her mother, a world-renowned scientist, both encouraged Ari towards "success," perceiving their daughter's intelligence from an early age. Perhaps it was all their pressure for perfection that warped her sense of reality. Who knows? Regardless, they had high expectations and so did she. She didn't "play" like other kids, either studying or training in self-defense. Ari never really minded, although she would have liked to have a friend.

Life went on. She got accepted into one of the best pre-law programs in the country. Her parents were so proud. Of course, college is the place where sheltered kids suddenly learn about the world, and this reality was no different for the privately-tutored Artemis Smith. Suddenly, she was in with the wrong crowd, as people saw her status and wealth as the proverbial gold mine. Before she knew what she was getting into, Ari was going to parties and getting wasted every weekend. By the time she fully realized the repercussions of her actions, she was in a jail cell for underage drinking and getting bailed out by her furious father.

She shaped up after that, focusing her energy on school like she had meant to do in the first place. She succeeded with flying colors, getting accepted into Harvard Law School. By then, her parents basically pretended her semester of partying never happened, and she was content for it to stay that way. After all, they had mercifully used their connections to keep the incident far, far away from her record. How could she complain?

What her parents didn't know, however, was that alcohol had gotten a rather nasty foothold in her life. Although legally able to drink by the time she became a law student, she knew--in the back of her mind--that she was becoming dependent on it. Too arrogant to really admit her problem, however, she's so far ignored it. It would all be fine as long as she finished law school.

Then the damn Calamity That Wasn't decided to fuck with everything. In the second semester of her first year, it came and went. And so did any sense of normalcy. Within a few days, she realized that her sneezes caused lightning to strike during a thunderstorm, and she could adjust the temperature by a few degrees at will. Her mother was already working with scientists to uncover the mystery of these Powered individuals.

By the time Ari worked up the courage to reveal her powers, PRIT was already well underway. Through the family connections, she was almost instantly sent to them, and she accepted. Partially for her family's sake but mostly for her own. She'd always thought there had to be something more exciting than being a damn lawyer.

  • SKILLS
--Self-defense: Her father, being (rightfully) paranoid as he was, forced her to learn how to defend herself from an early age.
--Drinking: Although not the best of skills, it's worth mentioning that she can hold her liquor rather well. But she's still a burgeoning alcoholic.
--Logical: She's a natural problem solver.
--Educated: Before everything went to hell, Artemis had been in the middle of law school.
--Connections: Through her parents, she's more than a little connected in the scientific and business world. In fact, it was through her mother that she first got introduced to PRIT.

    ABILITIES
Atmokinesis: able to manipulate and control the weather, although currently bound by pre-existing conditions (i.e. she cannot create a blizzard in the middle of summer, but she could manipulate lightning in a thunderstorm)
**may possibly be able to manipulate weather outside of pre-existing conditions in the future**

Name: Levant Morellus
Age: 32
Sex: Male

Appearance:

A little more rotund than the image suggests. He's a big lovable bear of a man. Also, his eyes are perpetually closed, but when opened they look like eerie yellow snake eyes that glow with a sickening intensity.

Personality: Levant has got the really cool dad repertoire going for him, as in he'll find you a legit hookup for some drugs, provide you a detailed explanation on said drug and the desired effects of recreational use, buy you all the munchies you could need for blast-off, and then play video games with you for five hours while you're blitzed out of your gourd. He balances this with a critical approach for the responsibility of existence, shoving the stark cold boot of reality into the ass of irreverent youth. He's a natural guardian and teacher, understanding the necessity for failure and experience as a catalyst for growth, but never withholding the firm hand of stewardship for those that need it.

Levant appreciates the small and simple things, like ice-cubes melting in a glass of cold ice-tea on a hot summer's day. But he also likes fine things like hand-tailored outfits made exclusively for him. And secretly he hungers for debauchery every once in awhile. His attitude toward the suffering he's overcome in his life has always been, "It's not that bad. It could be worse."

He's an affable man with a personal magnetism that others find hard to deny. He's also a lover of boogie woogie jazz and early rock n' roll.

History:

Generational criminality and an all too thorough disdain for authority runs deep in the veins of the Morellus family. Levan't ancestry is a combination of felons from colonial Canada, exiled for their villainous misdeeds to society, and plantation slaves from America's Confederate South. Their grandfather was a notorious bank-robber of French-Canadian descent who eventually floated down the Mississippi to New Orleans to evade authorities. During his time in the Crescent City he fell in love with a black woman, abandoning his dangerous life of crime for the more steady pursuit of monogamy. They had a daughter, Levant's mother, and lived out their days in New Orleans.

Her name was Gloria and Levant's relatives used to say that the Morellus gene of lawlessness ended with her. Born in the 50's, she strove to become the first in her family to obtain a college degree. She was a strong and independent career focused engineer, something incredibly rare in those times. This meant that she wouldn't have Levant and his brother until she was older, and she had a bad habit of falling for bad men.

Levant and his older brother Aurelius grew up without knowing their fathers, who were deadbeats by their mother's account. They both coped without a father figure in different ways. Levant tinkered with electronics and had his older brother to look up to, who by all rights was the "man" of the house; Aurelius ended up becoming embroiled in gang activity in bad neighborhoods, not falling very far from the tree. And on more than one occasion, Levant, blinded by his love for his brother, would become involved too.

Aurelius and his mother's relationship became increasingly strained. So much so that she gave him an ultimatum, threatening to disown him and leave him homeless if he wouldn't get his act together. It was a vain attempt at tough love when Aurelius surprised Levant and his mother with his decision to join the military at 18. Levant was 14 then. It was at this time that she also gave birth to their two younger siblings, twins named James and Abella.

After his brother left, Levant got his act together, got himself into a good school studying computer programming and computer science, met a girl who he developed a stable relationship with, and moved off to New York with her for more work opportunities. Everything was going fine until his mother died of cancer (something she had been battling for quite some time.)

With no other relatives who could look after them, Levant's younger siblings were placed under his care when he was 24. To this day he'd say that he couldn't of done it without his girlfriend Sasha who stepped up and helped him with a lot of the tasks required of parenthood.

4 years later and Jude rose from the ocean. A couple months later and Levant discovered his terrible ability. For most new powered, they ended up destroying a home or fighting off some criminals who were also powered; Levant had the great misfortune of simply looking at his girlfriend when his eyes activated.

She broke up with him and moved out after the incident, although she stayed within walking distance and came by to help out with the kids, since Levant at this point lived in perpetual darkness.

Later on in the months of trying to cope with his power and navigate the world blind, Aurelius paid his brother a long overdue visit after not communicating with him for over 14 years. He stayed with him for several months, introducing him to "associates" he worked with. Aurelius' power was able to "turn off" the powers of anyone else. He kept Levant sane during his stay by keeping Levant's ability off and mentally prepping him for the days when he'd have to take responsibility for his "gift" and use it in the world. Levant was of the opinion that his eyes were a curse.

When Aurelius left, Levant did what his brother told him to do. He accepted his blindness, and Sasha helped him learn how to read braille and use computers again so he could go back to work. And then he took Aurelius' words to heart- maybe not in the way it was intended- and he applied to work with PRIT, disclosing the power behind his eyes.

Skills/Abilities:

Basilisk Glare: Levant's power is unique in that he doesn't seem to be able to "use" it in any sense. All he needs to do is open his eyes and catch the gaze of his target and any bystanders to unleash its destructive potential.

The Basilisk glare is a sort of hypnosis that essentially fills its target with an existential dread that is all consuming. Anyone looking into his eyes is effected, but they can counteract it with a sort of "will save". For instance, those used to staring into the maws of doom will only be stunned by the initial terror of the glare. The weak willed, however, can manifest the terror they feel in many ways. Most people just pass out or get incredibly sick, but in extreme cases some would end their own life if it meant getting away from Levant's eyes.

Coding Proficiency

Hacking Expert

Naturally Big: Levant has always been a big guy standing at 6'5" weighing around 220 lbs. Before PRIT he would've considered that he was letting himself go, but now he's got access to equipment and training rooms so he's gotten back into relative shape.

Naturally Strong: Levant is a scrapper when it comes to fighting, possessing about as much grace and precision as someone getting off a roller coaster after shotgunning 12 beers. He's got a pretty good grip if he can manage to get his hands on an opponent.

Personal Magnetism: Levant quickly makes friends with just about anyone. His voice, his laugh, the way he speaks and holds himself draws in listeners easily. For someone so big he's got a particular penchant for being disarming. He can slip into unfamiliar groups more naturally than most thanks to his "go along get along" attitude. This is useful for infiltration, especially since he's perceived as blind which makes most people believe he's harmless and worth their sympathy.

Ladies Man: Women just seem to like him. A lot.

ALSO, because I neglected to mention: expect the next GM post November 9th - typically, they'll be intervaled bi-weekly. Strictly speaking, it's not the end of the world if you don't get a post in by then, but uh, do your best and whatnot. :p As always, take your time, people are busy with school and work, so we can move leisurely.
