Biography:
Anna wasn't always deaf. In fact, there was a time in her very young life when she could hear. She could still faintly remember traces of her mother's voice singing her to sleep and of her father whispering softly to her. Yet, when she was just two years old, she grew gravely ill. Though she almost died, she managed to recover fully with only one side effect. She was deaf.
At first the doctors told her parents it was a temporary side effect and to just wait. So, they did. Within that year of waiting, Anna received no help. No one to help her with her speech that was only still developing and no one to teach her how to communicate, not being old enough to write yet. She fell behind in her communication skills, and as such all other skills fell behind as well.
It was after that year that they decided perhaps this deafness was not a short term side effect, but a long term one. After that, she was given lessons on how to use sign language, and as she grew older, written language was widely used by her, since most people in public didn't know how to use sign language.
The first school she attended had many very nice people. People that helped her and understand that it might take a little more time for her to grasp things than others did. She loved it there and never wanted to leave. But, when she was in fifth grade, her father got a new job and they were forced to move all the way across the country, where she was forced to start a brand new school. At first, Anna was a little nervous but at the same time excited to meet new people. After all, those at her old school had been so kind to her that she assumed it was the same everywhere else.
She was very wrong.
People at this school were very cruel to her. The often pushed her around, stole her hearing aids, and called her horrible things. There was one boy in particular that was incredibly cruel. Often times, she would be found running as fast as she could away from he and his friends to avoid any confrontation. Sometimes they would catch her, while other times she would outrun them.
This went on for two years until she reached seventh grade and finally had enough. Her mother found her in her bedroom, standing in a chair, a scarf tied to the ceiling fan while she was in the middle of tying the other end of the scarf to her neck. Her mother stopped her just in time, and it was at that point that she was pulled from school. She began going to therapy, missing a whole year of school due to her 'episode'. When she was rehabilitated, she was enlisted into a school for other kids like her. Kids with impairments, such as hearing or seeing loss.
Over time, Anna found that being separated from that situation of constant bullying helped a lot. Though there were times when she would remember all that happened to her as a child and sink into depression, it was never bad enough to try and take her life again. As she learned to better handle her impairment, her grades improved significantly and she even joined the track team. There were even times in her life where she was actually happy. One of those times was when she found out she was accepted for a full ride scholarship to the college she had been wanting to go to for years, scholarships for both her grades and for her track running abilities.
