- Fantasy is number one. Steampunk, sci-fi, alternate history, and everything else that isn't boringly realistic are also fine by me.
I'm not going to pretend like I don't want to be pretty. I like wearing makeup and I definitely love cute clothes. I've been known to skip meals (sometimes two or three in a row) to lose weight and take freezing cold showers so my hair dye will stay perfect.
Honestly, my biggest advocate of "you're beautiful no matter what you look like" is my boyfriend. He doesn't give a damn if I'm wearing a miniskirt or sweat pants, if I just got out of the shower or haven't taken one in two days, if my hair is brown or red or teal. While I still allow myself most of my previous vanities (especially heels; I love my shoes) I'm not really concerned about them anymore. To me, being pretty isn't expected- it's fun. Kind of like a work of art. When I feel like creating something beautiful using my body as a canvas, I can grab some heels and a polka-dot dress, put on a little makeup and a little body glitter and be fabulous. But I can also go out in public in my daisy dukes and an old t-shirt, because my body is a body first and a canvas second, and I don't always feel artistic about going out in public.
