It has been decades since the fall of Voldemort and his followers. A lot of progress has been made since then. The Ministry underwent massive reform under the administration of former Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt. Pureblood-centric laws have been abolished, and the ministry, allegedly cleansed of its corruption and prejudice, has never been better. Progress, in a smaller scale, has also been made in strides: the wizarding world has shed its old-fashioned ways and begun adopting modern technology and pop culture.

Some say that these changes are for the better, but there are those who would argue otherwise. For not all changes have been good; and sometimes what is proclaimed to be progress is, in fact, the opposite.

In 2019, the Progressive Society for Worldwide Peace and Cooperation (PSWPC) forced the Ministry's hand to reveal itself and the existence of the wizarding world to muggle society. Many believed this was for the best, that it was high time for both worlds to co-exist. And yet, relations between the two remain hostile.

It is the dawn of a new decade, and the polarizing political climate and sensationalist media have had a dire effect on the people. Misinformation and panic have been spreading. Although Voldemort was defeated years ago, his influence still remains. More and more, as society grows ever polarized, people are starting to regress to old habits. There are those who claim that Voldemort was an innocent man. And at least half of the wizarding population has begun rallying behind his modern incarnation, Julius Ainsworth, whilst loudly proclaiming their discontent for the current Minister.

Many believe that there would be a war soon. The only question is when.
CHAPTER I. THE WARY AND WEARY WIZARDS

Date: August 30th, 2020
Time: 11am
Event: Shopping for School Supplies
Weather: Sunny

It is a day before the start of term. Muggle-wizard relations are still tense in the wake of the recent terrorist attack. In order to ensure the safety of wizards and their homes, muggles are no longer permitted within any wizarding town or establishment. Meanwhile, the students of Hogwarts are to do their shopping in groups. The Leaky Cauldron--a pub that once connected London and Diagon Alley--has recently been closed down, forcing the students to take a different route to get to the shopping district.

It is a good thing that the professors of Hogwarts are watching over the students and taking lead. In this tumultuous time, these understandably anxious teenagers are easily frightened. With the professors around, things should go relatively smooth-sailing.

Penny brushed her hair hehind her ear as she moved over to the counter with him, then paused and quickly went back to where they been, remembering the cleaning kit she'd been about to put away, before everything happend.

"Nope!" She said brightly, returning to his side. "I just came in because I saw you," she admitted with a sheepish smile. She offered the shop keeper a smile hoping to help him feel better. "Thank you, I hope the rest of you day is better," she said softly before grasping Everetts hand and tugging him from the shop.

Soft laughter filled their ears at his response. Her eyes twinkled, a grin etched upon her face, "Well, dear Albert. I am afraid you will be stuck with me for the day." Teasing him was something she took pleasure in due to his nature.
Hearing that Cyrus won the cup, Lysandra's eyes widened, "Your team won the cup?! Wow.. That's. Congratulations!" She was truly glad for Cyrus.
The interaction between Albert and Cyrus dampened her mood soon after, and her eyes darted between them. She chewed on her bottom lip, her heart squeezed, and her stomach churned slightly. Albert's reaction towards Cyrus caused a sense of foreboding to wash over her. She buried it as soon as it came, though it had left a bitter taste.
Sensing her disinterest, Lysandra flashed a small smile, deciding to cut things short. "Oh you know. Just a few things here and there. Shall we go, Albert?"

It took him by surprise when Sang actually showed some enthusiasm over the robe he had picked out for her. He watched her as she gazed upon the outfit contemplatively. Although Sang was always so... casual about her sense of style, if you could even call it that, she was still really pretty.

"Of course it's okay!" He reassured Sang. "I'd really like to see you in that."

Jasper pushed his plate away, finally finished eating; he'd spent more time eating after his sister and friends had slipped away to class. He was honestly tempted to take days like this to sleep in later.

He spun around and jumped from his chair, stretching as he headed out of the hall. He wanted to return to his room, either to sleep or waste time. It was weird not having his friends around, too quiet...

Only, a walking soloution appeared. Felix, a shameless flirt but somewhat fun to banter with. He slowed his walk and arched a dark brow. "Felix..." He greeted, a small smirk tugging at his lips. "Been dreaming about me again? You're looking almost...disheveled," He crooned, tucking his hands into his pockets. It was a complete lie of course, Felix never looked disheveled ..unless of course it was completely intentional.

Kellen had only just stepped foot into the hallway when somebody called his name. Instinctively, he looked up, only to find that one of the professors had caught up to him.

"The classroom is this way," the professor gestured towards the opposite direction. "You aren't thinking about cutting class on your first day back, are you, Mr. Armstrong? You aren't dressed in your uniform, either."

The boy was silent. He slipped his hands into his pockets and shrugged.

"I'll lead the way there, since you seem to be lost," continued the professor, unperturbed by the lack of reaction. They started down the hallway, with Kellen trailing behind in a lackadaisical manner, clearly taking the piss out of the teacher who only had a few minutes left to get to the classroom.

By the time they got there, there was already a good amount of students waiting in their seats. The professor ushered Kellen in like a criminal being ushered into prison.

And then, his eyes met hers.

Kellen had the uncanny ability to pick out some of the craziest girls in a crowd of people he'd never met. He wasn't sure what it was about them that made it so easy for him to distinguish. But the moment he locked eyes with this particular girl, he just knew.

And what better way to convey his carnal interest than through staring? After all, he was really good at that. Even as he made his way to an empty seat at the back, his gaze remained fixed on her, unwavering.

Half an hour before class started, Lysandra was already in the class, sitting at the left corner of the back row, doodling on her parchment as she waited for the others to arrive. Her early arrival was not due to her being studious, but rather that it was something she had been taught from a young age, one that had became a habit.
Occasionally, her eyes would flicker from her piece of parchment, eyeing the door. Soon as she heard laughtee from the corridor, or chatters, she would look up to see if any of them would enter. She was curious to know if she would see any familiar faces.
As the students filed in, she kept an eye out, smiling at those she knew, and interacted with them the way an extrovert would. And those that she didn't, she greeted some, and some she simply stared at. The boy who was not only late, but didn't even wear the school robes, for example. Never seen him around before. And definitely made an entrance, having had a professor to usher him in. A newbie, she'd say, as they call it nowadays.
It was a moment of curiosity before he was pushed out her mind.
She would smile when her half giant friend would lumber in, and she'd patted the seat beside her, one that she had saved for the gentle being.

Ivy draped her long legs over the chair beside her own, tilting her own back precariously, head tilted back, back to school and already bored out of her mind, always the same old crap over and over; where was the excitement and drama!

"No need to look so sour Juniper,"
She purred, grinning at her fellow Slytherin. "You didn't want to sit with me anyway," she taunted. She got a very clear dismissal when the other girl twisted away and moved as far from her as she could. "Someone's cranky this morning," she muttered. She pushed herself back down, gaze briefly lifting to the door... and stayed.

A slow, almost challenging smile touched her lips as she held new guys gaze. She lowered her legs from the chair with deliberate slowness, her gaze lingering on his. So maybe this wouldn't be a complete bore...

Kellen broke eye contact long enough to light a cigarette he'd retrieved from the inside of his jacket. He then propped his feet up on the table in front of him, leaning back in his chair with his arms folded behind his head. The cigarette seemed ordinary enough; if it weren't for the fact that the ashes, which would normally break off and fall to the ground, simply disappeared into thin air.

"Mr. Armstrong!" The professor yelled. A flick of her wand and the cigarette, too, disappeared. "Do you have any decency at all? You just cost Gryffindor 10 points."

It was funny to him how this old lady seemed to think he actually cared about something as stupid as house points. Just to spite her, he retrieved another cigarette and mockingly brandished it in front of her, before putting it into his mouth and lighting it once more.

Naturally, it disappeared again. But he had expected that. It was a good thing he had plenty more cigarettes on hand.

"Would you like a trip to the Headmaster's Office?" The professor seemed to grow more annoyed with each word. Normally, Kellen wouldn't give two shits, but those words actually made him reconsider for a moment. It wasn't that he had anything to lose. It was an empty threat to him, but he also didn't want to waste his time at the office when he could be doing other things.

He glanced at the girl once more, then reluctantly put his cigarette away.

The professor then went on to tell them that they would be doing an activity today. The students would be splitting themselves into pairs to discuss what happened at the Ministry, what led to the attack, and what they could do to prevent it from happening again in the future. All that seemed perfectly dull to Kellen, but at least he had the opportunity to talk to the girl he'd been eyeing for a while now.

He walked over to her desk, dragging his chair with him and practically forcing himself between the girl and her seatmate. He sat down just then and simply looked at her for a moment. He then opened his mouth to speak, but he was interrupted by a group of students suddenly bursting into the class and apologizing for being late.

Arnold lumbered over to the seat next to Lys, smiling nervously to the point that it was hardly a smile anymore, but more like a really tight pursing of the lips. It made him happy that she'd saved him a seat, even if he still found it difficult to talk to her. At least she thought of him as a friend despite all that. Settling himself into the seat--always hard, as they were always far too small for him and the low desk failed to accommodate his legs well--he placed his notebook on the table and started writing on it. A few seconds later, he showed her what he'd written.

Thanks for saving me the seat.

Just then, some guy he'd never seen before started giving the professor a difficult time. Arnold looked on, confused, then scribbled something else on his notebook.

Who is that?

Thankfully, the new guy stopped doing whatever it was that he was trying to do before things got worse.

Lysandra grinned as Arnold came over towards her, glad to have someone she actually got along quite well with in this class. Keeping a ear towards the professor, she'd lean towards his desk slightly to read the note he wrote. A smile appeared on her lips before she took her quill and scribbled underneath the note;
You're very welcome. I'm glad we're in the same class!

Her grin just then, however, turned into a frown at the disruption the new kid caused. How unbelievably rude! And not only that, he caused their house important points. They were already behind as is, by 100 points and now he's adding to it?! what the fuc-The need to bite his head off rose, but she quickly threw water over the budding fire. It would have been unladylike of her to do so. Don't forget who you are, Mei Xing. Deciding to ignore the voices in her head that was tempting her, she looked back to the front.
It was made easier when Arnold moved his notebook towards her once more. She flashed him a smile of gratitude, though he probably wouldn't have noticed her irritation. Reading it quickly, she shrugged as an indication,
I don't know. Must be a new person. Never seen him around before. It seems that he is our fellow housemate.

Her slight annoyance was slightly translated into a more scrawly writing as she wrote it fast, some looping over the other.

After he'd glared sufficiently enough at the students who'd burst into the classroom, he reverted his attention back to the blonde girl he was sitting next to.

Just then, he held up her wallet as if he'd just fashioned it out of nowhere. He flipped it open, running his hands over the cards in their pockets before finally pulling one card out.

"Amy Andrews," he said slowly, letting the syllables roll over his tongue. "Pretty name. Suits you."

He pushed the card back into its slot and pretended to hand her wallet back to her. However, before she could grab it back, Kellen suddenly pulled away.

"I'll give it back if you agree to go out with me," His tone was playful, even if his expression seemed totally serious.

Ivy arched a brow, ignoring the burst of wicked delight inside her. This one was all kinds of trouble; just how she liked them.

Her amused gaze returned as he dragged his chair towards her, letting it scrape across the ground and giving her a chance to brush her gaze over him as he dropped into the chair, ignoring the mildly irritated look from her desk buddy. Of course, his flare for dramatics and the late students, gave her the perfect opportunity to swipe his wallet with complete ease.

Her arched brow was her only sign of surprise as she saw the wallet in his hand, though that surprise, very quickly turned to pure amusement. She reached for the wallet, her smile widened ever so slightly as he pulled it back. "Mhm..." she leaned close. "Maybe I would have, Kellen..." she purred, his name rolling from her tongue like a caress.

"Only problem is, Amy is over there," she teased, pointing to a girl across the room. She leaned closer, brushing her hair back breath brushing against his ear. "Left pocket next time," she challenged, sliding his ID across the desk, keeping his wallet, for now.

His face gave nothing away, but seeing his wallet in her hands surprised him. And hardly anything ever surprised him these days.

As she'd advised, Kellen checked the card in the left pocket, and indeed the face that stared back at him looked nothing like the girl beside him.

He had to admit: he was impressed.

The boy's face slowly but surely broke into a lopsided grin as he tucked the wallet away. The chair tilted precariously to the side as he leaned closer to her desk. Kellen's gaze fell to the girl's lips for a moment before looking her in the eyes once more. An invitation.

"Do you wanna get outta here?" His voice was low so as not to be overheard.

Ivy resisted the temptation to lick her lips as his gaze dropped to them, she was definitely hyper aware of his gaze, everything about him actually.

"Mhm, took you long enough to ask," she crooned, green eyes brushing over his face. "I was starting to believe, all you helpless staring was an empty promise," she taunted. She lifted her booted foot, forcing his chair down. "Which would be a shame," she flashed him a knowing grin. "I'm a lot of fun."

"I can tell," he winked, leaning back in his chair as he pulled his wand from his sleeve. "Watch this."

He uttered an incantation[1] with a simultaneous flourish of his wand. All the books, paper, pens, and quills within the vicinity shot up into the air and flew around them in a fury—as if caught in a tornado—before falling victim to gravity. One of the books hit the professor in the head; the sight of which caused a rare laugh to slip out of Kellen's lips.

Without wasting another second, he grabbed the girl's hand and quickly made it for the door while everyone else was distracted.

He broke into a run.

This boy was definitely opening her to a world of trouble, more then she usually got herself into, and honestly, she couldn't wait.

She didn't hesitate not that she could with her hand grasped in his. She smoothly grasped his back as they ran from the classroom. "This way," she said, pulling him down another hall. If you knew where to go you could get to the other side of the school in moments.

She slowed and tugged him to a stop a she reached a familiar room. She shoved open the door to the trophy room, two floors above the class they were meant to be attending. She tugged Kellen closer as she backed in. "Someone definitely likes to start the year with a bang." There was always a double meaning with her, few were clever enough to catch it.

It was easy to depict the changes in Lys' mood based on her handwriting. Clearly she was frustrated, and he didn't blame her. The delinquent was wasting the time they could have spent learning things. Muggle Studies wasn't the most appealing subject in Hogwarts, but it was to some degree important especially for a half-giant half-wizard like Arnold, who would know very little concerning the subject.

Just as he was watching the new kid, who had now started harassing their classmate, a realization dawned on him.

I just remembered something. Do you think he's the delinquent? People say he disappeared last year because he ended up in muggle prison.

Arnold wasn't usually the type to pay much heed to rumors, but the new kid had become especially notorious last year. And at some point, he'd even made fun of Arnold's stutter.

Then, as if in answer to Arnold's words, the delinquent inflicted a rocket charm on their belongings. Arnold gave a yelp as his books and the notebook he'd been writing on shot up to the empty space above them. The rational thing to do would be to quickly utter a counter spell to minimize the damage; yet despite knowing this the boy couldn't bring himself to do it, shocked as he was by the suddenness of it all. Despite his size, Arnold was someone that was easily frightened into a corner. He hoped someone else would step up and just put a stop to the havoc.

Some of the books and quills fell, hitting people as well as the professor. Arnold was an especially large target, but he was also an especially large shield. He'd leaned over so that Lys wouldn't get the brunt of the impact, shielding his own head with his hands.

Muggle Studies was very boring for the half-vampire who, first and foremost, didn't care at all about such mundane affairs and, second of all, had mixed feelings about muggle society after the attack on the Ministry. As such, he found it quite entertaining to watch the drama unfold between the American student and the professor. Not that Oliver particularly liked chaos, but it made this class more interesting at least.

Of course, this was before the American had charmed their belongings. Oliver failed to react fast enough to the objects falling on them and ended up getting a scratch on his arm from the sharp edge of a book. The boy hissed; it was strange, it had been a while since he'd actually seen his own blood. Thanks to his regenerative abilities however, the scratch disappeared in an instant without him having to use magic.

From the corner of his eye, he saw their two classmates leave the classroom. He turned towards Sang just then with an eyebrow raised. A silent query.
