It tends to be popular (or Cthulhu does, anyway), but I've found that many people who claim to like the mythos haven't actually read his works, which is a shame.
Since his stories (mostly short stories and a few novellas) were published starting in the 1920s, the writing is a little dense, but I find it very enjoyable. If you like classic horror/suspense, you should check out his work. Many, if not all, of the stories can be found for free online.
