The story about the cat preventing a robbery.

Plus cats (and several other kinds of animals too) can save lives by just being there. Ever heard of moral support?

Dogs.

I think I said this before, but to me, cats, like so many pets, are classified as "thing you keep around the house." Dogs become an active part of your family. They are social, capable of empathy and generally a lot more involved with you. Also they don't moult on top of your keyboard. That's a pretty important one.

I love both animals equally for the most part and I've had amazing experiences with either animal and I've had horrible experiences with either animal. Unfortunately, I'm severely allergic to cats, but that doesn't stop me from taking some allergy medicine and cuddling up with my friends cats.

Personally, I have 3 dogs at the moment in my house, Dixie (11 years in June), Tyler (9 year old boy) and Chabella (1 year about to be 2 in a month. I call her Chiki). Out of the three, Tyler is my baby boy. He was a rescue and he has a strong attachment towards us. Dixie is the queen of the house when I'm not around. She gets away with everything but as soon as I show up she behaves. I don't know what that means but all three dogs listen to me and their a bunch of brats. Chiki is a fluff ball on crack and I wish I was joking. She chases her shadow, runs into the walls and she runs so fast that she slides a foot from where she wanted to stop in the first place, but I love them all.

I've met dogs who are more like a cat and cats that are more like a dog. It all depends on the persons preference and the animals attitude as well as their owners attitude.

I would go with dogs, I had one once ;w;...

Though cats are more silly because of stuff like exploding kittens, in general kitten are way cuter than puppies! '...Rats smells like 1000 deceased orphaned kitten in a closed environment.' sounds for example way more disturbing than ''...Rats smells like 1000 deceased orphaned puppies in a closed environment.'

If you don't like the idea of exercising a dog, do not get a husky. They require a lot of exercise to keep healthy.
Oh I know. But I am very much so a cat person; and while I'd love to some day have a dog, I wouldn't be able to have a dog without lots and lots of fur. Which equals lots of maintenance, but oh well.. There are breeds of dog that look like mini huskies, maybe I'll invest in one of those little cuties someday.

There are tons of stories of cats saving their owner's lives. There was that viral video of a cat chasing off a dog that was attacking a child. The cat attacking an alligator.
Actually not that many. As a point, the cat attacking the alligator is falsified--there were several adults around, the child was not in any harm, and the cat was being a cat: Defending its perceived territory, not saving someone from harm.

I will concede though that cats do occasionally save people and cats can be social animals. Just not the same way as dogs, where a dog shows nonstop, everlasting love & loyalty to me.

... ? [Citation needed] (I tried searching for it and all I got were uncited stories on cat lover sites that look like they were made in the 90's.)

I... Not even remotely the same as dog saving my life twice by keeping physical threats at bay, but, sure... Yeah... Not what I was arguing against, at all.

I didn't say "cats are worthless pets", I mean I even recommend a cat over a dog if you live in an apartment. I just prefer dogs over cats because their behaviour is reflective of something that loves me, unconditionally, absolutely. I'm part of a dog's family. A cat just sort of tolerates you and if you feed it then it'll purr and curl up with you.

If it makes you feel better, yes, I've seen cats do weirdly caring shit. When my mother was pregnant with my younger brother, a cat we owned would bring over deceased mice to her bed, offering her food it seemed. Dunno why, it just did. Cats can be caring creatures, just, not in the same way as dogs.

Glad that's clarified. After all, between cats and dogs, ferrets are obviously the master race. :ferret:

It's been a while since I read the article. Gonna need some hours to dig that piece up from the dark corridors of the internet.
(Plus it was most likely a territorial action from the cat's side.)

Cats. I hate small yappy dogs, and I find it hard to deal with big dogs. The only big dogs I handle well are Siberian Huskies, and other northern, wolflike breeds. They apperently all love me and that is neat.

Cats who really take to you, get really really loyal. Its wierd. They are independent. But they have to be in the same room as you. When I suffered my hardest bout of depression, My cat refused to be in any room but mine. He would always want to play, or paw at me or sleep on my chest and purr generally be borderline defensive of me. Like "Touch him and I scratch" mentality. Then again. He wasn't the average cat And he lived 18 years, learned how to open doors, cabinets, our fridge, how to open plastic bag with his claws...

Cats. Lions, Cougars, leopards, Tigers, and Jaguars are all cats.

I genuinely can't understand people who hate cats

Allergic, of course, nervous, sure, maybe even vague dislike - but the hate is definitely not something I get. I mean, same goes with those who vehemently hate dogs, but I see that kind of reaction directed more towards cats. There's also still so much superstition surrounding cats that I can't help but wonder if it kind of subconsciously (or consciously) affects the opinion of some people. Who knows.

As for the poll, cats for me, but I like dogs too. Cats just 'suit' me better in all ways. I think I'd only really get a dog if/when I get an acreage and need dogs to keep livestock safe.

I can, because I readily understand the unbridled hate that is present in ~90% of cats I encounter. I know of 2 cats in my life who are sociable and friendly, while the other immeasurable number of cats I've met with are hissy, anti-social, and prone to GIVING MY SCARS ON MY FOREHEAD.

My cats are abnormal
belly rubs is the shit for them.

By your logic since ferrets have saved less people's lives than cats or dogs they are horrid nasty creatures and cannot express love or affection.
To extrapolate farther people have saved the most number of other people. So people are the best most caring creatures on the planet.

Humans ARE the best. We made videogames. And porn.

That is not the cats fault, that is the owners fault. My aunt and uncle had a cat that was only sociable with them. It attacked everyone else. That's not the cat's fault, that is how they were raised. Dogs are the exact same way. If you don't properly socialize a dog as a puppy, it will bite and attack everyone that it meets as well. It pisses me of when people blame animals for things. Yes, if an animal has been properly socialized and treated properly and it's still an asshole, that is the animal. But if the owner neglects the animal, that is not the animal's fault, that is the owners fault.

Between the plethora of animals I have lived with over the years, I've found myself unilaterally in favor of dogs, large and small. Cats in my life are for some reason incapable of mutual affection or general interest in my existence; the closest I've come are a couple of kitties who were always happy to see me because I'd always give them many pettings, but I'm fairly certain our relationship was mostly dependent on those pettings.

Dogs on the other hand are always so bright and witty — even if sometimes that means they're too smart for their own good and get themselves into trouble. They learn how to show me things they want and need, they figure out how to reply to my words to tell me if they're confused or upset with me, they teach me how to teach them, and they even model things for the new pups. I've always felt like there was a communication barrier worthy of hope, as if dogs were secretly intelligent and just couldn't express themselves; I don't know, maybe that has something to do with why I feel so at home working with autism.

Then again, I'm sure cat-lovers feel a secret intelligence in cats, too. I just never could get over the fact that most of my cats seem like they're just lazy, apathetic, and generally foolish. :o

The universe is the better of the three.
It practically takes care of itself.

I prefer dogs though. It does of course depend on which dogs we're talking about.
Huskies.

My aunt has a dog (had two before) and has gone through 2 cats, and now has 2 again. The dogs have always been wonderful. The cats have never been anywhere near wonderful.
If it's the owners fault, explain the well-behaved dogs. She is far from neglectful or inexperienced with training animals.

The thing with these cats is that even though they were trained and kept indoors, subjected to near-constant human presence, they still turned out to be nasty assholes. It had nothing to do with their raising, which seems to be the case for, once again, 90% of cats I encounter.

Or it could just be from the animal's natural instinct. If you get a wolf dog hybrid, you can train it at best you could but it would still be a fairly unpredictable pet as it is part wolf.

Basically neglectful or not some animals can still be assholes regardless if they're well trained or not, not saying this applies for all animals of course.
