Listener - [a superhuman rp]

Name: Michael Hansen
Age: 46
Sex: Male
Appearance:
56862cbac6a8155fcba4e6300dfc314c_character_reference_character_concept.jpg

Personality: At first appearance Michael would seem to be a simple man, doing little more than what he needs to take care of himself and always worried about the well-being of everyone else. However, just as anyone else, there is more to him than meets the eye. Getting through his mentor-like exterior, he's actually quite damaged. A good look into his eyes is a good way to tell that no matter how true his happiness is, the smile rests on a scarred face.

Despite what his life had become, he is genuinely happy. Though he does have far more experience that many others at PRIT he tries not to flaunt it, even if he can be a little judgemental towards the younger ones involved. He tries not to show it, if they are to grow they will need to do it on their own, he'll just be the one holding the door open for them.

History: Michael is the oldest of three, named after his father. While his two little sisters are of the same father as himself, his parents got divorced when he was 7. It was a bad relationship for the both of his parents whose attempt at staying together led them to grow more and more toxic towards eachother over time. After the divorce, their father didn't stay around, Micheal Hansen Senior would not be heard from by his family again. It was this separation that lead to Micheal taking it upon himself to act as adult as he was capable of for his sisters.

Schooling was rather normal, he'd made his friends as we all do, only 1 of which he still talks to. Tests were easy for him as he'd spend hours the night before studying until he knew everything on it. This was a habit that would stick with him through law school, making it easy to graduate Summa Cum Laude. However, it was after his 3 years of law school that he'd realized he had no idea what to do with his life. Studying law was not decided for any reason other than interest, he did not wish to become a lawyer, senate, judge, or any typical legal figure. This was a realization that lead him to continue his schooling, not to learn more, but to become a law school professor.

In his time as a student he'd met a lovely woman, and by the time he was training as a professor, they were married. It only took a few months after the marriage for his wife to become pregnant with his only child, a beautiful girl named Tabatha. She's now 17. While he lives in New York to stay in headquarters for PRIT, his family lives where he will always consider home, a small country town in Colorado. He calls home every night before he goes to sleep. It can be hard being away from family.

Skills/Abilities:
Firearms- While calling Michael a good shot would be a lie, he is capable of handling most handguns for self-defense.

Mentorship- Michael loves to act as a mentor to those younger than him, his time as a law professor engraved into his head that it's his responsibility to look after those he's responsible for. This has made him quite empathetic and protective.

Enhanced Perception- Michaels power. It's very simple, when he "activates" his power, time seems to move slowly. He can observe everything around him in a very short period. Time does not actually slow, but everything feels as if it moves slowly around him. This is very useful for analyzing situations in the field, though it must be noted Micheal cannot move any faster.

Name: Alexis Acosta
Age: 19
Sex: male

Appearance: https://i.imgur.com/GRAA1Yj.jpg (reference photo "Matthew Clavane")

Personality: "Everything moves to its own rhythm."
Alexis typically wears headphones, and can be seen quietly swaying back and forth to the music's beat. Even though the circumstances of his life have told him otherwise, Alexis often stands up and speaks out for what he believes in, because some things are just that important. He'd not call you an "idiotic ill-doer of ignoble fathering" to your face, of course, though his features may belie his thoughts at times. People sometimes mistake him for a girl, due to the femininity of his face and the way he holds himself. He's empathetic to people who are in distress, having experienced it before.
He'd more often stay out of a fight, but these days it seems the battles come to him. Alexis fights more fluidly when there's a swelling rhythm to keep in time with, and his style mimics the music's genre. He's quiet, but sometimes he mutters or hums to himself when there is little noise.

History:
A "juvenile delinquent" of sorts, Alexis hails from a bit of a broken family, around the middle of the scale speaking financially. His father left before he was born, and his mother raised him as a busy, distant single parent. Ferried daily to a private school until 10th grade, at which point he dropped out due to "motivational-related concerns", Alexis was daily the black sheep of the group. His parentage was alluded to and besmirched in fairly consistent undertones, and it made his blood boil.
Alexis withstood the trials of private school for his mother's sake, until he could no longer control himself. One year to the day after the monstrous Jude had again descended to the depths, Alexis' powers awoke while he was in a "disciplinary audience" with the school's board members. He slammed his hands down, turned the oak table into a jigsaw puzzle, and blew his way through every locked door till he'd left the grounds entirely.
That very same evening, PRIT members approached Alexis, offering him a new life and a second chance if he'd come along quietly. Otherwise -- termination. There was apparently something about the "capacity for development" of Alexis' powers that worried the PRIT, causing them to take extra caution, even though they only came with a small force. Still, in the end, Alexis agreed, and so began his new life. It was better than he could have ever dreamed.
Now, 3 years later, Alexis comes and goes from the PRIT quarters as if it were his home. And, truth be told, it is. Though he interacts with very few members on a personal basis, they have each other's backs, which was more than could ever be said of the horrible high school days before. Alexis has devoted himself to a light but constant training regimen, often solo but sometimes with a partner, to prepare to fight other Powereds when that day should inevitably arrive. His power and fighting style are unique, as are everyone else's, but there is a place for Alexis, at least for now, at this establishment of the PRIT.

Skills/Abilities: Vibration Manipulation.
All matter vibrates, at variable speeds depending on its state. Alexis is able to control the speed at which it does. There are numerous effects that can be caused by this control over vibrations, yet also limitations. Currently, Alexis strays from directly affecting living matter, as he's not certain that he has enough control or understanding of its composition and activity, at least compared to nonliving matter. It's difficult enough to be in tune with the entire environment and its vibrations around him at the same time, much less things that move of their own accord.

  • Matter State Alteration. Alexis can alter matter among its 3 basic states (solid, liquid, and gas) by varying the speed of its particles. Essentially, this means he can melt a metal wall, freeze lava, split rock or evaporate chemicals. Also, causing linear vibrations through matter allows him to simply split or fragment something whole into pieces, such as splintering a boulder.
  • Lately, he's also been experimenting with altering the toughness of certain types of matter, finding it trivial to soften a fall onto something hard by vibrating particles rapidly to break the partial rigidity of a structure. In other words, Alexis can break your fall if he notices in time.
  • Temperature Alteration. Changing the vibration of matter particles naturally changes their temperature. Distinctly separate from pure 'Matter State Alteration', Alexis can apply drastic temperature alterations to matter he touches, burning or freezing. This is safer than directly modifying living matter, and Alexis is comfortable using this technique against other Powereds. He can't yet reach super high or low temperatures, but several steps above and below the respective boiling and freezing points of water seems good to begin with.
  • Vibration-Based Attacks. Vibrations propagate through matter, and will work virtually anywhere except in space. Common attack techniques Alexis has trained in using are shockwaves and paralyzing vibrations that cause an opponent to become unsteady. Shockwaves can erupt when Alexis lashes out with punches or kicks, rapidly vibrating the air to lend force to his strikes. Additionally, this can be used to push off the air itself, a sort of a "double-jump".
  • Motion Detection. Being able to sense vibrations assists in looking for motion in an otherwise stable environment. Living beings often give off much higher vibrations, allowing Alexis to get a sense for their approximate distance from him.
  • Musical Empowerment. The noise of the world often overpowers Alexis' mind, drowning out his own rhythm. To combat this, Alexis will bring the weapon of music, whether recorded or performed live. Music that Alexis has heard before lends him a tempo and a beat, which he can "step in time" to and dance with the rhythm he knows, augmenting his vibration manipulation.
  • Alexis can play the violin quite well, and he keeps one safe in his locker at the PRIT in case a dangerous foe appears.

Akira Eto
Age: 34 | October 5th, 1983

Sex: Female

Appearance: Akira stands at nearly 5'7", with a slight slouch and her arms folded across her chest. She looks out at the world through dark, distrusting eyes, accompanied by a perpetual frown and thick, drawn-together eyebrows. Her thick dark brown hair is almost always pulled back into a tight bun or braid, even when resting. On the rare occasion that she does let it loose, it falls just below her waist and tends to tickle her elbows quite a bit (which is honestly one of the primary reasons she keeps it up in the first place). She has distinct muscle, mainly in her arms and lower body, along with a slightly larger and more athletic build overall. As far as clothing goes, she tends toward simple shirts and jeans in various shades of gray.

Personality: She's one of those types that generally chooses to stick to the walls in a room, often leaning against them with her arms crossed defensively in front of her. She usually seems like she's quietly judging everybody else in the room, and you wouldn't be entirely wrong to think that. Akira has a rather cynical outlook, generally believing unless it is proven otherwise that everybody she meets has some kind of agenda they will do anything to fulfill. Of course, that isn't always the case, and when she's proven wrong, Akira is usually willing to accept that and move on. She often chooses not to speak up, but when she does, she speaks her mind loudly and honestly with complete disregard for others' feelings.

History: Akira's early years were spent in a middle-class suburban home. She had two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother, along with a pair of fairly strict parents who never hesitated to remind their children of the dangers of the world. Akira grew up hearing nonstop about how the world was out to get her and how strangers weren't to be trusted, and while it worked for a while, by the time she hit high school, her curiosity was at an all-time high. She wanted to know just what was so dangerous about the kids her parents warned her about so many times, the ones who hung out behind the school building and dressed darkly. She managed to stay clear of the truly bad eggs, surprisingly, and instead made the acquaintance of a group that seemed perfectly all right to her. Sure, some of them smoked or drank or did other less than desirable things, but they all seemed fairly relaxed, friendly, and open-minded, especially compared to her parents. She honestly didn't see what was so bad about them other than that they didn't toe the line, but nobody could follow the rules all the time, could they?

Her parents didn't seem to think that was an acceptable excuse when they found out who their daughter was spending her after-school hours with. She came home one day to find them upset and concerned, but she didn't hear much more than "back off and stop talking to the people you've made friends with so far, and go back to the friend group you were with before". She rejected that idea completely--why go back to a friend group that was, in her opinion, uptight and naive? She was keeping up good grades, making connections with people she truly liked, learning things school and her parents had never taught her...She was happy, and she didn't understand why her parents wanted her to change. So, she did the only thing that made sense to her. She flat-out refused to do what her parents asked, and when they tried to restrict the time she spent out with her friends, she began sneaking out. Over time, her friends changed, and she changed with them. Eventually, she was decidedly in the "wrong crowd", and she didn't realize her mistake until she and a couple of her friends were caught shoplifting.

After she was released and after a few arguments with her friends, she wound up cutting ties with them and focusing on getting her life back on track. Her grades had slipped enough that her chances of entering college were slim, so she resigned herself to her fate and began looking for a full-time job that would take her. She found work as a store clerk eventually, and kept that job for the next few years, eventually renting her own apartment and moving out from under her parents' disappointed gazes.

She was 29 when Jude emerged. Despite the initial panic, she quickly developed a fascination with the creature, gathering every scrap of information on it she could find. After it submerged and powered humans appeared, her fascination only grew, along with her caution. She didn't have long to think about it, however, since her own powers emerged that same week, and they proved surprisingly difficult to control for something as seemingly harmless as shadows. By the time she had them under control, the initial chaos caused by powered humans had settled down, and PRIT had emerged. They found her about a month after she gained her powers and offered her a position, which she gladly accepted. It was better than her current job, and it offered her a chance to do something right for a change.

Skills/Abilities: Shadow manipulation/physiology--She can manipulate, shape, and create shadows, as well as being able to take on a shadowy form. Her shadows can be solidified, to a point. Normally, they could ensnare somebody, or create a wall of sorts, or maybe be used as a grappling line, but they cannot cause physical harm. Sharp objects or objects moving at high speeds can pass through her shadows easily and disperse them, but blunt objects or ones moving slowly are stopped. Her shadow form acts on the same principle as her normal shadows, as far as solidification and vulnerabilities go. However, most damage she takes in her shadow form will be reduced. Additionally, she is extremely sensitive to light and electricity while in this form, and may be forced to revert to her human form again if exposed to either of them. While in her shadow form, she can pass through solid objects and float.

Fighter--She is fairly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and improvised weapon combat.

Stealth--She moves quietly and quickly, even when not actively trying to be unnoticed.

Cooking--She is a surprisingly good cook, although she generally limits it to making her cheap meals taste somewhat better.

Frugal--She knows how to make money last, how to save it for important things, and how to live mainly with the bare necessities.

Fast Learner--She picks up on new skills unusually quickly if she's interested in them and willing to invest in them. Often, however, she doesn't care enough to retain what she learns.

These all have to be 100% oc, right? So no canon fandom characters aus?

Name: Luke Estley
Age: 26
Sex: Male
Appearance:[spoili][/spoili]

Personality: On a surface level, Luke enjoys the company of others; he appreciates a nice, light conversation and casual companions, and rather a long list of people would be safe to call him their friend. He, however, might not bestow quite the same level of feeling. While his companions are many, he considers his true friends to be a very select few. While his ability to make easy going acquaintances is quite prevalent, he rarely enters into relationships of true depth, primarily due to past experiences of being failed by those he trusted most.

Dependability is one of his foremost values; he expects it of himself without question and requires it of anyone who will ever have a chance at being truly close to him. He takes disappointment even on a small scale to be indicative of an entire lack of responsibility, and will rarely afford someone who has let him down with any kind of warm sentiments or second chances.

While not fully devoted to actions inspired solely on the whims of his emotions, Luke is acutely aware that logic has times and places where it is needed just as much as it has the same where it is at a disadvantage, and even unnecessary. His outlook on life and others tends to be somewhat bleak, but he accepts things for what they are without much complaint.

History: From birth until the age of two, Luke was raised in a highly questionable Russian orphanage. He was among the fortunate few to be illegally adopted into a home that improved significantly on his situation - albeit not perfecting matters. The American couple who took him in fell far short of perfection, struggling frequently in their marriage. Sadly, they failed to realize the added drain of raising a child until after they had also adopted a little girl in the same manner, Lillian.

Throughout their childhood, Luke assumed the high road while Lillian slowly but surely devolved into a life of adolescent crime. She barely made it through highschool before she was arrested during a drug bust, and found herself in rehab. A few days following this, Luke discovered for the first time that his parents didn't belong to him by blood - during the fight that finally sealed their divorce. The toxicity of it all was the last straw, and Luke finally bailed on the family that had failed him.

Halfway through his first semester at university, he dropped out and buckled down to get a job at a restaurant, far away from anyone he'd ever known in the hopes of starting his life over again and forgetting about the past - and, also avoiding deportation. For a few years, it worked; he rebuilt, he kept going, and he put it behind him as much as possible.

And then, after the Calamity that Wasn't, there came a Calamity in his own life. His sister got her life together and came looking for him, and all hell broke out of mirrors. When she finally found him, he'd gotten to a point where he had a handle on the disaster of a superpower that he'd acquired, but she brought an old set of problems straight out of the past: specifically, border protection.

So there he was, sitting on the literal verge of deportation when the Fuck Squad called.

LUKE ESTLEY

"If seeing is believing, people might not be so stupid if they could manage not to look once in a while"

  • Age: 26

    Sex: Male

    Height: 5'10

    Weight: 178

    Eye colour: Grey-green

    Hair colour: Dirty Blonde

    Build: Lean

    Clothing Style: Casual

Luke carries himself like he's constantly cold, often keeping his head slightly down and hiding his hands in his pockets. While at first glance from a distance he might seem aloof, he'll usually smile and let his friendly side flourish when others approach him.

  • On a surface level, Luke enjoys the company of others; he appreciates a nice, light conversation and casual companions, and rather a long list of people would be safe to call him their friend. • Luke earned the nickname 'The man in the mirror' fairly early into his career at PRIT for how it quite literally applies to his powers. He can manipulate reflections, insert himself into mirrors/reflective surfaces and move around in them, and even trap objects or other people inside them. Some of his more memorable experiences upon manifestation include accidentally getting stuck inside mirrors on more than one occasion, leading to an inconveniently long debacle aimed at getting back out again. Such experiences quickly bred an innate fear of his own abilities, sparking more trepidation and angst regarding them than may have been reasonable.

For the first few months, Luke avoided mirrors and reflections like rotten tomatoes. Unfortunately for him, however, such things are rather inescapable in a world that likes shine and sheer. He was subject to rather uncomfortable accidents semi-frequently, leading to even further anxiety. Slowly, however, he was forced to learn by being repeatedly thrown headfirst into the deep end when he least expected it.

For some time, Luke found his own abilities more a nuisance than they are useful, especially considering their lack of practical application. Eventually, he came to a realization that changed this; as much as his abilities screw with him, with the right touch, they can screw with others far, far more. As frightening as it may be to inadvertently trap oneself inside a mirror, the human mind is far more likely to be broken by having its self-image shattered and replaced with something truly horrifying.

Understandably, such a skill would naturally incline to be more useful for nefarious purposes, but fortunately for PRIT, they got dibs.

  • SKILLS
    Interpersonal Communication

Luke is good at getting his point across and generally handling the transfer of information between people and groups in whatever format suits the situation best. He is also able to explain things clearly and talk to anyone in a way that is easy for them to understand.
    Diplomacy

Hand in hand with his ability to communicate effectively, Luke is also good at being the middle man when it comes to conflicts between those around him. While he won't intervene unasked, when he does step into a fight he has a natural knack for smothering the flames.
    Menial Organization

Luke is nothing if not meticulous. When it comes to personal areas like his house or workspace, everything has a place and stays in it. He is incredibly good at cleaning up messes, and organizing things in a way that works well for their intended purpose.
    Self Discipline

Not only in his dedication to organization, Luke is a very calm, self controlled person. He doesn't allow things to get the better of him easily, and when he sets his mind to do something, he will see it through. On the flip side, however, this does make him extremely cautious of everything he chooses to commit to.
    Calligraphy

Although it may be a dying skill in the age of digital communication, Luke practices flawless calligraphy and cursive as a hobby. His handwriting is impeccable, not only easily legible but also rather elegant and pleasant to read.

    WEAKNESSES
    Uptight

At times he can overreact to those who lack his own sense of organization and personal control, leading to somewhat select tastes in the types of people he approves of. While not fully snobbish, he is overtly intolerant of others' inability to conform to his own standards.
    Overly Critical

With a keen eye for flaws comes an inconvenient judgemental response, both on himself and others. While he will rarely be heard expressing the dissatisfaction he often feels at his own failings and inadequacies, he will semi-frequently point out those of others.
    Unrealistic Expectations

No matter how impractical it may be to execute, he never expects less than absolute perfection. Over the years he has come to understand that others can seldom be relied upon to deliver, and while this doesn't stop him from demanding it, by default he anticipates disappointment with a somewhat cynical disposition.
    Poor Adaptability

Being as stuck in his ways as he is, when change inevitably occurs in any area of his life, Luke has a tendency to avoid it as much as possible. He doesn't like it one tiny bit, and it takes him a long time to adjust to new things.
    Physically Weak

Not leading a lifestyle that lends particularly well towards physical exertion and exercise, Luke is by no means physically strong. If anything in fact, he is considerably weaker than may be expected.

    EQUIPMENT
    Tools

    A compact mirror, reflective sunglasses.

Yeah, but I was too derp to know if it meant tomorrow was the cut off date and RP started or if tomorrow was the last day to submit. Thanks for the clear up.

I'll get to work on someone, probably will throw it up very late tonight since I have to stay up anyway and babysit my year-old-niece. She's very upset about bed time and is very eager to let the whole house know. ;-;

Getup and gear
[spoili] I can't find the very specific look I'm aiming for, so I'll summarize:

A dark maroon leather jacket with an pair of black, fingerless gloves. On the back of the jacket is an embroidered yellow rat standing on it's hind legs and smiling over it's shoulder and technically Eli's. Black ripped jeans and similairly black work/hiking boots. Under the maroon jacket is a similairly black shirt. He wears a biker helmet that's also dark maroon with a black visor, watercolored in yellow to say "RATS"[/spoili]

Personality: A gun for hire with violent tendencies, you'd think he'd be the type of person PRIT would chase down and not hire, and that's exactly why he was hired. He's the only sort of criminal that goes after other criminals. PRIT has been using him as an informant or criminal asset on hand. It's unclear if Eli is an actual proffessional hitman, is attacking other criminals out of some vigilante desire or if he's attacking criminals because he's not right in the head. Eli doesn't even really know. He's quiet and simple, he doesn't try to overcomplicate and he has an "Omerta" sentiment to his work. He doesn't talk about how he does things or why to anybody. He only does what PRIT tells him to do, and even he's not keen on telling them how it's done.

History: Eli was born in Israel, and not much is known about his time there. He was born to a normal middle-class family but somewhere along the way was radicalized by radical terrorist orginizations targetting Israel and he defected, throwing away his old life in his early teenage years as many young radical teenage minds tend to do. He started small with just assisting riots and carrying out small acts of vandalism and disobedience, nothing that he could quite get cought with. At 18 he was put into the military as-per Israel's compulsary military service requirement, and things took a serious head. While he was working as a technitian for one of the missile sites in the "Iron Dome" project, he sabatoged his own station and crippled one of the rocket launch sites, allowing rockets from Gaza to strike into the heart of Israel's territories for a few hours. After this, he defected and deserted his station but was caught rather early on by Israel's Mossad and sentenced with treason. He plead guilty and was sent to Prison Four in 2009 where he served 4 years until 2013, where we can all probably guess what happened. This is where he gets his nick name from. At one point, having not eaten in days, he resorted to injuring himself and using the blood to lure small rats in his cell to himself, then killing and eating the rats. Hence, "rats"

When his power's manifested, he made very quick use of them. His ability allowed him to shape and mold the prison doors into litteral toothpaste. Within a few hours and one massive riot later, he was free and immidiatley cought transport to NYC. Once he was there, he first made money by using his powers to make weapons. The idea was, if you wanted a weapon all you had to do was give Eli a inconspicious item you didn't want like an old tube TV or a microwave, pay him a small fee and he'd turn that item into a gun. After he accrued himself cash, he began to engage in the business of contract killings until about a year ago PRIT caught him. He was all more than willing to work for them if payed and vice versa.

Now, Eli is used as a kind of "deniable asset" for PRIT. Whenever PRIT needs to get it's hands dirty or do something it's not allowed to do, they call Eli because he's technically not regestered as a PRIT member at all. So even if he is caught, no one can trace it back to PRIT.

As you can probably guess, he works a lot closer with Dyer than Simone. Despite the fact Dyer is a vet and Eli is a desertee, Eli understands that if Simone gets her way then Eli's gone.

Skills/Abilities:

Eli's power is transmutation, or rather changing the molecular structure of atoms to transform objects into other objects. For example, taking a rock and transforming it into a baseball or taking a huge stack of papers and making a laptop.

There are limits. For one, he cannot increase the mass of an object. He cannot take a pen and make a plane. He can make a plane into a pen, however, but he can't make a pen into a plane because the plane has more mass.

It also takes time if an object is intricate or a piece of machinery. This is because he actually has to physically mold the objects he transforms very similair to sculpting something from clay. Practicing a specific item though, like guns, makes him faster at it.

He also has two big skills of guns and motorcycles. He's used his power to shape himself his own motorbike, and his time in the military has trained him on guns and how to use them. He's also pretty good at general physical violence with improvised weapons like baseball bats and sledgehammers.

He is rather unexceptional in looks, otherwise, standing at an average 5'6" and getting to be somewhat well-muscled. His skin is of the naturally darker variety. He keeps a pair of headphones around his neck, though no one's ever seen him use them, and has a number of tattoos on his body, the main one being a large dragon on his back, but most of the rest being more abstract, tribal design. They are mostly on his torso and back and therefore hidden, but some can be seen on his arms when he wears T-shirts. He has a piercing in his left ear in which he keeps a single gold ring, though where he got it, nobody knows.

Personality: Yoru is a quiet, sullen boy in his teens with trust issues. He tends to be most suspicious of people who are talented, friendly, or in positions of power. He appears to heavily dislike people, but works wit whoever he needs to because he believes in a need for control over these freaks. His idea of morality is starkly black and white, though he has a certain disregard for the law as long as those who hurt others are sufficiently punished and locked away. His favorite hobbies are brooding angstily in a lonely corner and watching anime on his phone. He tends to get lost in his own thoughts and has rather morbid views on humanity as a whole, but finds some enjoyment in the ridiculous and idealized qualities of anime and manga, which he also particularly likes because hearing his native language reminds him of a better time in his life, when he was a kid. He is always serious, rarely smiles, avoids physical contact or displays of affection violently, and tends to respond monosyllabically if he can get away with it and still convey everything he believes needs to be conveyed.

History:
Yoru Kurai was born the second of two sons. He was born to the Kyougi's, a Japanese couple who had moved to America in 2008 for the husband's work. Yoru's father, was a renowned researcher, who had received his doctorate in Abstract Physics from Harvard. His mother, on the other hand, was not only a stay-at-home mo but also the daughter and successor of a school of Iaido - a martial arts focusing on the use of the sword. Hikaru Kyougi, Yoru's older brother by eight years, inherited both traits from his parents. The swordsmanship came naturally to him, and his performance in school earned him recognition from his teachers. Despite his accomplishments, he was well-liked and known for being humble, well-spoken, and friendly. By the time he was eight, quiet, solitary, average little Yoru had heard the phrase "when your brother was your age" more times than he could count. His brother was eighteen, and he ten, when it all began to go wrong.

In 2010, Hikaru started to hear voices, and the voices almost always told him one thing: kill.

At first, he hid the impulses and pretended nothing was wrong, but as time went by more changes happened, until even Yoru noticed something was wrong with his brother. People whispered that he was starting to see things that weren't there, talk to something no one else could hear. He had grown quieter, less pleased with everything. It was like he was turning into a different person altogether. His parents, particularly his mother, grew worried, and the tension in the house became unbearable, turning their previously happy home into a solemn battleground. Their parents argued frequently about what to do about him, which only seemed to make things worse. Finally, unable to take the constant fighting anymore and growing more and more afraid of her own son, Yoru's mother left the house. Though she returned after a couple of weeks, it sparked a trend of her running away and returning that continued for almost two years, until they two eventually settled on a divorce.

The day the two of them got the papers, Hikaru gave in to the voices, and murdered them both, and then he set his sights on nearly-thirteen-year-old Yoru, who stole his mother's katana and ran. Friendless and running from his own genius of a brother, Yoru took to the streets, getting by by mugging people and moving from place to place. The strange "Calamity That Wasn't" felt more like a dream compared to the rough realities of living on the streets. He didn't have time for apocalypses when he was trying to survive, and he sure as hell didn't have time for apocalypses that didn't end up happening after all. That's what he had thought when it first happened. But the streets changed once people got used to Powereds, as they were starting to be called. Choosing who to mug became more difficult. Areas where squatters stayed in groups became perilous hubs of supernatural activity.

It was in the midst of this, when he was still only thirteen and just a couple weeks after Jude submerged, that Hikaru found him and, overwhelming him in a fight, broke both his legs. Before he could strike the final blow, however, Yoru gave a great shout, a flash of light darted from his hand, and suddenly his legs were healed, but his brother fell down in agony. In cold blood, Yoru took up his mother's katana and stabbed his brother to death. He remade himself that day, changing his name to Yoru Kurai as the dark night that snuffs out the light, and swearing that he would only fight with his mother's katana from then on. Although no one would have disputed his claims of self-defense, he chose not to go into the foster care system or return to school, and instead continued wandering the streets, this time as a vigilante, responding to cries of help, particularly when it came to lone Powereds.

After helping law enforcement a couple times, Yoru was noticed by PRIT, who offered to clear him of any serious charges if he would work with them to contain problems with Powereds, help maintain the peace, and prevent crimes rather than commit them. He is still rather new to PRIT, and less likely to go on missions because of his age.

Skills/Abilities:

Transfer Healing - Yoru has the ability to transfer wounds between people, so long as he knows what he wants to transfer and where the wound is, and for that area, and that area only, the other person's condition is transferred back. That is to say, he cannot just transfer someone's entire physical state to another person. And when, for instance, he gave his broken legs to his brother, he received in return the bruises and scrapes this brother's legs had endured. It is easiest to transfer wounds between himself and other people in either direction (more difficult to transfer wounds between two other people), and deep wounds or older ones (for instance very old scars) are more difficult to transfer. If, for instance, a bullet or shrapnel is embedded in the flash, he cannot move it, because it is only the wound itself that he can transfer, and in this case, attempting to do so would likely be very painful for the person with the bullet in them, as a fresh wound would be made anew from it. Fatal wounds can be transferred, but he can also actually heal them. If he chooses to do so, he will endure a great deal of pain and get a scar on his back. Because fatal wounds are almost always deep, they are the most difficult to transfer, and directly healing them is the most difficult task of all. He cannot transfer wounds from dead people, and so far the only non-wounds he can transfer are benign, localized cancer, and physical damage such as burns, including sunburns, or radiation poisoning. The easiest and most natural ability is to transfer wounds from himself to others, which he can do regardless of depth or location on the body. There are some indications he may be able to simply directly heal others or also heal diseases, but he hasn't managed those yet, if so.

Iaido - Although lacking his brother's natural talent, Yoru was always more inclined towards physical activity, and picked up the art his mother taught him without much complaint, especially devoting himself to it during the two-three years of his brother's troubles as a way to escape it all. Lack of proper mentors in the last four years has made it difficult to completely keep it up, but he trains on his own so as not to lose his skill in the martial art.

Katana - Iaido is technically a solitary form of martial arts with imaginary opponents, but opponents aren't imaginary as a vigilante on the streets, so he has learned how to use the weapon in actual fights, usually sheathed. When he unsheathes the sword, it's typically a sign of him getting deadly serious. He has cut himself with it a number of times to transfer his wounds as an attack, which for some reason no one ever sees coming. Since he swore he would only use his mother's sword to fight, he carries no other weapons and has turned polishing it into a nervous habit.

Bilingual - Yoru's first language is Japanese, so his English is accented, but he did come over as a kid, so he is fluent in both English and Japanese.

Name: Jason "Donut" Delano
Age: 21
Sex: Male
Appearance:
pink-hair-boytest.jpg

Personality
: Donut is nice, the kind of nice where you scoop up a spider and let it outside instead of killing it (or you just let it hang out in your corner for however long it need a place to live). He takes bad instances in stride and prefers to look at the bright side of things. He prefers to avoid confrontation and is somewhat timid. His personality is mostly the result of his abilities, by being able to see things through the EMS, he can see, as he puts it, that "Everything is connected. Everyone".

History: Donut is the youngest of two siblings, born on the same day six years after his sister. For the most part, his life was normal. He grew up being babied by his parents and older sister. Although he didn't grow up a spoiled brat, it did result in his somewhat timid nature.

Donut was 17 years old when JUDE first appeared. It was only a few days after its appearance that his abilities started to appear. He was unable to sleep one night, he was unable to close his eyes. It took him only a few minutes to realize that he was looking directly through his own eyelids!

Unnerved and somewhat terrified by this discovery (he couldn't sleep, the horror!), he panicked, stumbling throughout the house and to his parent's room. It wasn't long before he was being driven to the nearest hospital by his parents. It was during the ride to the hospital that he began to see things beyond X-rays. Flashing colors and light itself, the signals that connected computers and phones to the internet, colors that he'd never known. It was during this trip that his worldview was changed entirely. He now knew that everything and everyone are connected, and he could see it all.

After getting some sort of handle on his abilities, he began to study the things he was seeing, to understand how and why he was seeing them, and what they were. As he studied, his abilities developed along with his understanding of them. Eventually, much to the chagrin of his parents, he decided to join the PRIT in an attempt to find out more about his abilities, where they came from and to broaden his horizons.

Skills/Abilities:
  • Electromagnetism: All of Donut's powers are electromagnetic in nature, and thus are tied heavily to the Electromagnetic Spectrum. The only real offensive capability of this power is that he's able to manipulate metallic objects, Electromagnetic energy, and fields.
  • EM vision: The ability that is the very reason for his outlook on life, Donut is able to see the entirety of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Gamma waves, X-rays, Ultraviolet, Microwaves and even radio waves, all of them are visible to him. He can see shades of colors that others aren't able to see. Combined with his ability of electromagnetism, he's able to interfere with light (For example, interfere with a cell phone signal).
  • Although he's not a Nobel peace prize winning Physicist, Donut is pretty knowledgeable in the areas of Physics and Chemistry, something that helps him understand his abilities, and that his abilities help him to understand.

Assuming it's still alright to post new charries. ^^

Name: Riley Mahir
Age: 27
Sex: Female
Appearance: All in all, Riley has a no-nonsense look. She can overcome it by smiling, but that's uncommon at best. Her hair is a very dark brown, easily mistaken for black, and it flows in wavy locks. Her face is fairly long, which adds to her look of seriousness. Her eyes are are deep set and as light a brown as possible as if to contrast with her hair.

She stands just shy of average height, but with definitely more defined muscle-mass. Not that you could really see it seeing as she practically only ever wears long sleeve collared shirts, usually with a tie, maybe even a vest or suit. When with family and friends, though, she can be found wearing something as casual as a sweater, but it has been years since she's worn anything like a T-shirt.

Personality: Riley is your model law-abiding citizen. Growing up, she never strayed from the rules. Even when she disagreed with them, she knew they were there for a reason, and figured she hadn't been born to be the exception. Perhaps for that reason, she can come off as cold and calculating, judgmental, a stick in the mud and no fun. On the other hand, she's also the most likely person to know all the hoops to jump through (or shortcuts) to get things done. Her ability to keep track of it all is rooted in her insatiable curiosity, a desire to uncover the unknowns, to delve deeper into every mystery, and fundamentally understand the rules of the universe. The best way to motivate her is to tell him no one knows. She's quite persistent in pursuing a new problem. She'll do what it takes to get things done, whether that's a few minutes to a few weeks. Though scholarly, she doesn't quite fit the absent-minded professor type. Beyond intelligence, Riley prizes her ability to see the big picture, to see and comprehend the situation as a whole and adapt as needed. That isn't to say she's easily distracted once she's latched onto a new mystery to solve -- quite the contrary, it'll live in the background of her mind till it resolves -- but she knows how to prioritize, set aside her own desires for the greater good.

History: Perhaps the most surprising piece of trivia in Riley's life is that prior to becoming the research-minded individual she is today, she once aspired to be a federal agent -- one of those who daily beat the baddies, and came out on top. She actually got quite far along that path, even going through several boot camps to get whipped into shape, graduating with a political science degree and entering law school. Perhaps it would make more sense in her words: she saw it as a way to face the unknown, bring those outside the law to justice.

But when Jude appeared, or rather, disappeared, there was suddenly a mystery that no one in the whole world truly understand. How was it this thing appeared? How did it affect people? The rules of being human had suddenly been thrown up in the air. She took up courses in biology, psychology, chemistry, a whole swath of things in search of answers. Her law friends and fellow aspiring agent teased her about it. Wasn't it a bit late to be switching tracks? She was already on the road to success. Riley, though, withstood the flak she got. The world was facing a new challenge, and it was outside the realm of the laws they knew, violating the rules of the universe, which meant the first step was to understand it. With all that in mind, why would she care of she was taking classes with undergrads as a law student?!

Turned out her experience outside research proved to be quite useful. She helped the lab she joined to work with other universities and labs to help propose appropriate legislation to guide research. First and foremost, it was important to remember Powered people were people, as prone as some of them were to criminal activities, and none of them ought to ever be subjected to life as a lab rat. Experiments had to be subject to the same standard as all other human experimentation. But, in a stroke of genius, she managed to get organ donations from Powered individuals to preferentially go to universities and labs over hospitals. She may have played off the fear of organs suddenly combusting a bit. But it was for a good cause. There were simply too many questions that had to be answered.

The boot camps she attended surprisingly had their uses too. Their lab asked for Powered volunteers. In exchange to helping them out with some studies, the lab offered money and a safe place to practice and hone their abilities. Riley, in short, found herself acting as a punching bag for many a combat-oriented Powered individual, and a couple times was healed back together, too. She had really only meant to volunteer herself the one time, but once word got around, there was really no shutting it down. Besides, there was nothing quite like experiencing the unknown first-hand, right? It never got old. Maybe that was the reason she started developing new materials that could withstand the bizarre circumstances she often found herself in.

It wasn't long after they started the volunteer program that PRIT decided to get involved. Quite a few organizations that had sprung up overnight in response to Jude and the newly Powered, but most of them knew of one another, which meant PRIT and her lab weren't exactly strangers to start with. At first, it was a matter of knowledge-sharing, what did their lab know, what had PRIT found out? Could they talk to the volunteers about potentially becoming PRIT members? They could also send PRIT members over if that'd be helpful. There were plenty of non-disclosure agreements to sign on both sides, and a swath of background checks for the lab personnel. All of which was quite thrilling. Sure, she'd signed her name saying she wouldn't spill the beans, but that implied she was in on the secrets.

One thing led to another, and PRIT discovered her work with defense materials, inspired half by the Powered people she worked with and half by the sheer desire of not getting beat up nearly as much. They asked to develop it further, and Riley was more than flattered to help get the technology into the hands of the protectors. Her efforts there were clearly recognized. The federal funding for her lab nearly doubled almost without her even having to write a grant proposal. (She did anyway.) But, they asked, why stop at defenses? The weapons they had at their disposal were occasionally completely useless at keeping members safe. They needed something new to stay ahead of the game and carry out the force of the law. Riley jumped at the challenge, producing a handgun that could support a couple different kinds of rounds with an easily exchangeable clip.

It wasn't until she had heard the first report of how good it was that she realized what exactly, she had built. What she made, what she researched was no longer just an intellectual curiosity. There were real world repercussions. If her help pushing forward the legislation protecting Powered people from being subject to inhumane experimental conditions wasn't an indication of her stance, well, she disagreed with the whole shoot first, ask questions later philosophy, but that was exactly what she had enabled. Riley was ready to quit over it.

And, well, perhaps her developing a new sort of gun had caused PRIT to examine her background check deeper. That's when they discovered she wasn't exactly a non-combatant and encouraged her to join PRIT. It was, she realized, an offer to fulfill her childhood dream while not taking her off-track from pursuing the mysteries Jude had launched upon the world. Riley, however, declined, uncertain that she wanted any more involvement at all, insinuating she meant to to leave the field entirely.

PRIT offered a special circumstance, a one time deal. They had an "anomaly in the making," and wouldn't she like to go see it? It was innocent enough -- picking an artifact left behind by a Powered individual and bringing it back to the lab. Turned out it was a bomb. Or fertilizer. It was sort of unclear, but given they'd found it in a bank, it probably wasn't meant to be used as fertilizer. The one time deal, however, kept repeating. She occasionally got calls to "go check out a reported incident," and they always turned out interesting, and so she kept staying on. One time, it didn't go nearly so smoothly. What should've just been a normal pick up of a random bag turned out not quite to be the case. The perpetrator was still around, and, scared of getting caught, had started exploding all the glass in sight. There had been an undeniable thrill to catching the man, punching the lights out of them before he managed to explode the glass of the neighboring building, an apartment complex. (She did, though end up with more than a couple gashes which a PRIT member kindly closed up for her.)

PRIT took the opportunity to remind Riley of the standing offer to join up with PRIT. While she couldn't entirely say she agreed with their methods, she did agree with what they were trying to accomplish. She joined, largely focusing on research endeavors, but acknowledging that she had to be ready for whatever happened. There was little she wouldn't do for the pursuit of knowledge, and maybe, just maybe, she could change the whole shoot-first culture from the inside.

Skills/Abilities:
- Combat training: Riley's taken it back up, honing the skills she's let drift. This includes hand-to-hand, firearms and the sort. Definitely has more of a flare for brute strength having flipped more than a couple tables before, but has a preference for dodging and dexterity moves when it comes to dealing with Powereds.
- Researcher: She doesn't really let the lines of discipline get in her way. She has a degree in biochemistry (and political science), but she's dabbled in engineering and has clocked many hours on material science as well.
- Paperwork: She wouldn't say she actively likes it (though, compared to the average individual, she loves it), but she's particularly efficient at it, knows all the right forms, what they mean, and which ones can really just be skipped.
- Great memory: Riley has a knack for remembering things, especially if she hears them.
- Voices: It's the one party trick Riley seems to have picked up. She's very good at accents and voice mimicry. Trying to get her to perform, though, is a different matter.

So, first of all, a big thank you to everyone that applied; I appreciate the effort that goes into conceptualizing a character and then curating a sheet, and I appreciate that you directed that effort to my little cozy roleplay thread.

The list below are the accepted character applications:

Araceli (@SoleStride)
Tore (@Psycho Of Ireland)
Sarah (@Applo)
Sean (@Greenie)
Michael (@Squee)
Alexis (@Eru)
Akira (@Joan)
Luke (@Starlighter)
Rats (@The Legate)
Yoru (@firejay1)
Donut (@SkittlesAndSpike)
Riley (@Shavynel)

In any case, I'm prepping the IC post, and that'll be incoming in about 1-2 days (unless I go hyperdrive, in which case it might literally come today after work). Some of you may be receiving a PM about, um, minor queries, observations, clarifications in the interim. Besides that, there's also another order of business or two.

With twelve accepted character sheets, we have a very large cast, and also a very large possibility of chaos and various RPer heads exploding. For that reason, I'm going to divide the twelve of you into three groups.

Group 1 - Donut (SkittlesandSpike), Sean (Greenie), Tore (Psycho of Ireland), Sarah (Applo)
Group 2 - Luke (Starlighter), Rats (TheLegate), Araceli (SoleStride), Michael Hansen (Squee)
Group 3 - Alexis (Eru), Akira (Joan), Riley (Shavynel), Yoru (firejay1)

For the most part, I have concrete reasons for certain characters being paired up with other characters, but not all of them. Feel free to message me if you make an agreement to swap places with another, because that's totally fine. I can't be sure of anything before seeing what the characters do IC, but - at the risk of sounding cryptic - it's likely these specific groupings will only be relevant for Act 1 of Listener.

In any case, there are three groups, and three broad plot strands to begin with. As the plot lines are - in theory - intended to be heavily intertwining, there'll be opportunity a plenty for inter-group interaction. (And feel free to find other ways to interact between groups, as well; maybe phone calls during posts, random off-duty moments).

I'll put the Character Index in the opening post eventually.

I'm also gonna be inquiring of volunteers for, uh, certain select plot hooks that may or may not spring up. At the moment, there's only one I have in mind.

T-t-t-t-turncoat?: The character that volunteers for this role will find some sort of criminal element attempting to leverage them for nefarious purposes (for that reason, it's somewhat mandatory that the character has something to lose - preferably other than just their wellbeing). The role will require a hefty bit of collaboration with me in addition to RPing with the rest of the cast (making it doubly involving writing-wise), but also affords a more intimate look at the Listener world's criminal elements. The character does not actually have to go turncoat. If interested, shoot me a private message.

((Volunteer roles do NOT need to be filled, so don't feel pressured to do so.))

Alright, friends, the initial IC post is up. IC Thread.

Of special note, is the Scene Objectives spoiler, which is intended to spell-out that which is either implicit or pertinent to the following round.

The post takes place through multiple PoVs, which are intended to add to the narrative quality, although perhaps sacrifices clarity in certain instances. Do feel free to inquire of me anything you'd like to know. Also feel free to critique in any way, and offer suggestions for the future.

Hey @Shizzy,

I'll have my character up by tonight.

Ahh, I'm sorry D:

I totally meant to get it up last night, but something happened. And ugh. If it's alright, could I still try posting it by the end of today? If not, I totally understand. :D
