Nation 10: Winterhual (VIN-TER-HOWL), orange
System of Government:
Winterhaul is governed by the Obsidian throne held by the King of Wind, and the Court of Stone; its politics was once described by the Reinkuni philosopher Akiyama Kaede as "like a bunch of humming birds fighting over a bowl of sugar water".

The court of stone consists of nine thrones held by the Lords of Stone separated into three tiers of power. A throne from each tier is held by one of the three stone houses: Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic, each given the name of a stone from it's house's respective rock type.

Sedimentary House:
 1. Shale Throne
 2. Limestone Throne
 3. Gypsum Throne
Igneous House:
 1. Basalt Throne
 2. Monzonite Throne
 3. Quartz Throne
Metamorphic House:
 1. Slate Throne
 2. Marble Throne
 3. Granite Throne
Winterhaul's government functions on the premises that competition improves performance. Every position of power in Winterhaul has strict requirements of duties that must be fulfilled. Failure to fulfill these requirements provides grounds for someone of lower rank to take* a higher rank trading positions.

The thrones in the Court of Stone are inherited by blood line of their current holder as such there are laws preventing more than one throne from being held by a single family.

*Power trades in Winterhaul must be initiated by a seat of lower power. That person must provide proof of the higher seat having failed to perform their duties in some aspect, and then obtain a two thirds majority of a vote from the appropriate court. For a position on a throne that would be the Court of Stone, for just about any other position it would be from the Noble's court.

Trades of thrones in the Court of Stone can only happen between adjacent tier levels, with the exception of the first tier (the lowest). Members of the Noble's Court can challenge for one of these three positions.

To obtain the Obsidian thorn and become the King of Wind, one must first hold a throne in the third tier of the Court of Stone, and then prove to the court that the current king has failed to fulfill the requirements of a king. The candidate must then obtain a three quarters majority vote form the Court of Stone.

The result is that politics in Winterhaul is a windstorm of alliances made and broken with frequent power trades. The citizenry of Winerhaul can for the most part ignore the more intricate goings on of the government because the duty requirements and the resulting competition ensure they are well taken care of.
Basic terrain and weather:
Winterhaul is a nation of high plateaus with some extremely tall mountains towards the center of the country. Being, for the most part, right on the equator it's hot and dry consisting mostly of a high altitude dessert environment. It gets frequent powerful rainstorms only in it's mountainous area and the water the rain provide fills the numerous rivers that have cut canyons and valleys into the plateaus. The river valleys are largely the only fertile land in the country and are famous for their fruit.
Notable and Interesting Facts:
The Obsidian Throne changes hands an average of once every six years. The lower thrones of the Court change about every two years.

Winterhaul exports rare quarried stones and refined metals alongside its seasonal crops of fruit.
Anything Else?:
Winterhaul's part of the reconciliation contract reads that "The eldest child of the current King of the Wind at the time at which the invitation for reconciliation is received shall go for Reconciliation."

In Winterhaul it is considered bad form to hold a grudge. Back stabbing is commonplace in politics and It's hard to make enemies your friends again if you hold on to such things

Niice!

I could NOT read the posts, nor could I absorb so much info....
I had a lot of personal issues that made me so stressed out, I cannot tell you how I hurt myself.

With that being said, I will have to allow Dragon to have Nation 9.
I do not have too much knowledge about the tropical climates.
And chocolate, coffee, and Pumpkins... Don't know how to put all that in the tropical island. Along with the wine! And I KNEW the secret people would be scratched out.

Zathura - lets take the talk to PMs. if Surpy will trade nations, good, other wise, you have to work with what you have. you already switched once, although I understand that you could not view the map and so was not sure what nation you were getting. For this I apologize, as I could have provided a minimal written description of the nations and their placement on the map so that you could choose better. However, you could also have chosen to specific exactly what you wanted before I gave you a nation, rather than changing your mind after I chose a nation perfect for what you wanted at first. We are, I think both at fault. Again, move the conversation to PMs, no more taking up room in the OOC.

Falcon - awesome, I'll read it soon. And then I have to edit my Pohoni post (maybe) to take into consideration the climate map, which I should also put up on the first page.

Ryex - Interesting nation. Very interesting. I think your character will be well skilled in political maneuvering? I don't see any parts that might need improvement. Now to see the character!

I understand.
Sorry, everyone.
I love you all. And Murasaki-sama... Daisuke!
I love your role play so much!

Slurpy and I switched places.
So I am Nation 7 and she is Nation 9.

Senex went through a lot of name changes.

alright! *stretches* I'm done with my post! The hardest part was finding two more quotes for Van, other than the absolutely awesome one I found for his profile. anyway,....time to go vanish into my book now, and from thence to bed! I'll check in quick tomorrow before breakfast, if I have time (we're going out!) otherwise, Ill see ya'll in the afternoon.

I want to post something about Mystisa arriving at the port. Will an Atanwan escort take me to the Palace? Or will I have to find myself a place to stay before the new year?

Yay, I know the answer to part of this one because I asked that question too. (via PM so don't worry about trying to find it in this thread :) )
Each reconciled has a 'house' inside the palace complex. If you look at Murasaki's awesome palace map (the link is in the very first post under the Locations category) there are several buildings spread around and each has a number on it. The building with the number of your country is the house where your reconciled will stay. The house belongs to the reconciled and thier country kind of like an embassy if I understand correctly . . .

I'm not sure about an escort, but it sounds like a reasonable expectation to me . . .

Falcon is correct! Every nation has a mansion/mini-palace like building within the larger palace complex. The other two buildings (the ones that aren't numbered) are more general access. The one the back is for the Lady Steward, as explained in my Van post, and contains both her living quarter and her office (as well as the offices of many of her assistants and other city officials). The building building is like... the ex-throne room, the great hall, the ballroom, and other places like that. Anyway, but yes, uh, Mystisa has a place to stay.

Hm. I never thought to call it an Embassy. Yes, I like that. Embassy Mansion, except during the next year, when it is the Reconciled Mansion or something... whatever.

I think an escort is reasonable as well. In fact, Van is itching to serve as Escort for someone (preferably Ester cause he has a hard on about that nation, not saying why). Other Assistants or Ministers or whatever would serve as escorts.

Ok, so getting ready to write up a post for Claudia and have her send out an escort/s to receive the reconciled.
Question for everyone though. Oujin's ship just pulled into port, are other people (Kaz and Mystisa) wanting to arrive at the same time so that an escort for multiple people would be needed? or should she be prepared to send out an escort at various times for whenever the reconciled show up? (as she will for the others)

I think I will work on Sacre O' Xæyne (Senex/Nation VII) tomorrow morning.
I cannot format well on my phone, so I will work offline for a while.

Hint: Northern parts are quite tropical and certain fruits are grown there. However, it is more of an evergreen forest.

Southern parts of Senex have cooler summers, but harsh winters. The citizens rely on the winter crops in the north during this season.

Don't forget, Zathura, that people can store grain (import first sometimes), dried or canned fruit, certain fresh fruit/veggies which ripen off the vine, and smoked meats/fish to feed them through the winter. They don't need a constant supply of fresh fruit and veggies.

Ooh... I could maybe set up something similar to a strip mall for their canned fruits, cheese or ground coffee.

That would be reserved for their awful winters.
They are also known for their autumn pumpkins and festivals!

Something is better than nothing, right?

I don't mind arriving at the same time with the others. It'll be fun. If Van will escort us, then my post will stop at the point where I climb the boat's ramp to the port. But I would like to know what to expect. Will there be guards lining up? Will Van hold up a handwritten sign that says "For Mystisa"? *laughs* It's just so I know what Mystisa will see.

.....strip mall?

Ehhh...not sure on that.
I thought you knew where I was getting to that.
I was thinking of little taverns or booths (think the Dark Ages, where citizens were able to shop and use some grain or pebbles as currency to buy certain items for their settlements.) But I am willing to other suggestions.

A strip mall and a local market are two different concepts, I think, at least in my mind. Having a small market in the larger cities, with any kind of currency (coins would be best, but some places used stone or other objects) is fine. Having a strip mall feel to the market is not. There might have been a single general store in very small towns, but most cities had entire sections of the city given over to cobblers, tailors, tanners, dyers, and the like. ...

Actually, you know what, it doesn't matter what your people do as far as trade. All you have to say is what kind of crops they grow, and what exports they produce, plus what they import. It is implied and understood, i think, that small markets will exist, that people will can, dry and smoke what supplies they can to last through winter, and the things like that. It never has to be said at all, anymore than the fact that winter is a lean season has to be said.

The least said, the best, I think. Just explain the big important things, like what the government is like (be brief), what major exports or imports the nation engages in, and what its general relationship with its neighbors is. That's all you need. Don't worry about fashion (you can cover that in game via character posts), about internal trade, about what and how they store food for the winter. Its not really important.

Hm. Well, Van would lead a small group of palace guard, probably like 5-10, as a sign of respect/strength from the government of Atanwan. With them might be a few Third and Fourth assistants to the Lady Steward, there to act as guides (because Van can only be in one place at a time). Past the pier, there will be a dozen rickshaws (if not more), to carry the passengers. But the Rickshaws will not be visible, because only the group on the pier will be visible. So...For Mystisa, say 5 guards and one Assistant. For the two guys, 2 guards each and an assistant. The guards and assistants will be easy to spot because the guards are wearing the colors of the palace, so Mystisa should know they are Palace Guard and therefore most likely there for her. However, since I figure she'd be led off by the captain of the ship, who will most certainly know who they are, there will be no problem with her and her entourage meeting up with them.

I was going to have Van greet each of the Reconciled as their ships arrived, moving from one ship to the other, since I figure all three ships might not arrive at the exact same time...say, 10 to 30 minutes between, especially with how busy the docks are and how such important ships would be directed toward a single part of the dock, with the other political ships and such. Yeah.

I've got Claudia's post nearly done. She's pretty much just going to shove the whole escort thing "they're arriving go greet them" off on Van and expect him to know what to do. The whole going from one ship to the others plan sounds good to me. Though I'm considering having Oujin refuse the use of a Rickshaw. How practical would that be? to walk all the way from the port to the palace?

fatalrendezvous did you want Kaz to be included in the arrival group with Oujin and Mystisa, or will he be arriving at Atanwan on his own? mostly just asking so I know what to have Claudia say when she tells Van to go take care of everything. I can have her be unsure about Kaz's arrival time if that works better for you?

I probably won't actually post anything until tomorrow anyway.
