A song about war, child-soldiers and nationalism.

The refrain has some references to literature…
"Lieb Vaterland, magst ruhig sein
Ein Jeder stirbt für sich allein
Ich bin klein, mein Herz ist rein
Kann niemand darin wohnen, nur der Tod allein"
"Dear fatherland, (you may) be calm
Everyone dies for themselves
I am small, my heart is pure
No one can live in it but death alone"
"Lieb Vaterland, magst ruhig sein" is a reference to "Die Wacht am Rhein", which was considered an inofficial anthem of the German Empire (the second one).

"Ein Jeder stirbt für sich allein" probably references Hans Fallada's novel "Jeder stirbt für sich allein", which is one of the first anti-Nazi books published by a German after the Second World War.

"Ich bin klein, mein Herz ist rein" seems to be a reference to a prayer (which I myself have never heard), which goes along the lines of:

"Ich bin klein, mein Herz ist rein,
soll niemand darin wohnen als Jesus allein
Amen"
"I am small, my heart is pure
nobody shall live in it but Jesus alone
Amen"
This seems to be a prayer that parents tell their children, thus the connection with the song.
