The Vietnam war seemed far away while he worked down underneath the mountains. Despite this, Clay considered himself a patriotic American. He felt inspired by stories the old veterans told, like his late uncle's bravery at Chosin Reservoir in Korea or his neighbor's service on Guadalcanal.
When the war in Vietnam started to escalate, Clay enlisted in the Marine Corps. During his first tour in country, he learned the harsh realities of the war, he decided to stay for a second tour, finding that the money he was sending home was more than his family would have gotten if he was in the mines.
