The Serenity of Niko Shinjumaya[Icicle//RiniPinja]

After Serenity's comment about her own funds, he quickly responded, "I have enough for a night at a cheap hotel I remember from an advertisement. It has 'complimentary breakfast' so you can save your money for the bus fare back." He hurried along, speeding up slightly when passing alleyways, especially when there was movement in the alleyways. Niko only led Serenity down sidewalks which were well lit, keeping his eye out for cars whenever he crossed the street. At one point, a car nearly turned into them, but it stopped a few feet short before Niko had the chance to tackle Serenity out of the way.

After a good ten minutes of walking, Niko heard Serenity ask a question and, after a few seconds of thought, he slowed down in front of a crosswalk and looked at her in confusion. After noticing that she was blushing and frowning, Niko reluctantly responded, "Y-yeah...Is that bad?" He then led her through the crosswalk, still holding her wrist. Once they reached the "hotel," a small building, only three stories tall, with a horribly maintained sign which had the words, "Motel Fife" were written out in bold letters, only the M, O and the first F and the E being lit up.

Niko opened the door for Serenity and explained, "I hope it's not too bad, but, this is the only place I can afford..." as he sensed her displeasure. Once they were inside, Niko held Serenity's hand once again and led her up to the front counter, were an extremely well-bearded man who smelled of smoke and alcohol was sitting in front of a filthy cash register. "Oh! Hey! It's Niko!" the man exclaimed, his voice dry and crackling, as if burnt by thousands of years of smoke.

Niko chuckled and waved hello, and commented, "Why'd you leave the apartment, Noah?" then pulled out his wad of money and, after taking a five-dollar bill, he handed it all to the guy, who then proceeded to count it all. "After the fire, boss man had to drop me...Alright, $32...I see you're moving up in the world, eh' kid?" the man said, winking at him as he swiftly moved his head towards Serenity, then turning around to look for a key, "an' you're lucky, too, you both get the last room." Niko stared at the man in confusion, then commented, "Oh, uhh, good!" Niko turned his confusion to Serenity as well for a moment, then looked back at the man, who was dangling a key towards Niko.

Niko thanked the man and quickly grabbed the key, then led Serenity down the hallway as Noah chuckled to himself and waved at them. "If Noah's here, we're safe," Niko whispered, smiling at Serenity innocently, "he helped me get a free night in an apartment a week ago, after I bumped into you." Once Niko arrived at the staircase at the end of the hall, he climbed up two flights of stairs to the third floor and walked along the hallway until he reached, "Room 308, and it's at the end of the hall..."

Niko smelled the air briefly as he slid the keys into the lock of the door and noted that it smelled like clean linens and a fairly strong air freshener. Once the door was opened, the clean linen smell was slightly stronger. Niko held the door open for Serenity and, after finally feeling safe enough to release her hand, he gestured for her to enter. Once Serenity was in the room, he closed, locked, and deadbolted the door, then inspected all of the features of the room. [Note: as they are explained, that is the order in which he inspects them]

Right in front of the door was a small passageway which, on the right, had a surprisingly large bathroom, with a full bathtub and shower, a toilet, a rather wide sink, a large mirror, and a bunch of random bottles of bathroom supplies which Niko didn't quite understand the meanings of. The bathroom had been cleaned recently, and smelled exactly like the cleaning supplies hidden in the cabinets under the sink. To the left of the passageway in front of the door were two closets, one of which had bathrobes and extra hangers, and the other of which had an iron, an ironing board, and a few extra blankets, pillows, and what looked like pajamas. Niko only briefly scanned through the closets to make sure no one was hiding in them.

Then, in the main section of the room was a single, large bed, which took up most of the area of the room, which was placed against the wall to the right and the wall of the bathroom. On the other side of the bed was a bedside table which had an alarm clock and a lamp. Inside the bedside table were a few materials from previous guests, none of which Niko could recognize as anything besides candy wrappers without candy, and a bunch of random papers and two books, the Bible and another book which had a ton of phone numbers and names in it.

There was little to no extra space in the room, as the heater was located in the space between the bed-side table and the large table which housed a Television, a microwave, and a mini fridge. The mini fridge was empty and turned off, and the T.V. was not functional, much to Niko's dismay. He looked around the small room for anything else, even checking under the bed, but was unable to find anything. With a shrug, Niko opened the closet and stored his recently bought supplies in the one with the iron and the ironing board. He then turned over to Serenity with a concerned expression and asked, "you...seemed uncomfortable outside, so...do you want me to let you have the room to yourself?

Serenity nearly screamed when she saw the car that nearly ran them over. Afterwards, she made sure to stay close to Niko, and she felt immensely glad he was with her. No matter how many times she traveled at night to the town, she was lucky never to bump into any serious trouble. But before, she realized now, she never thought about how dangerous her nightly outings were… Perhaps meeting Niko opened up a new sense of paranoia and consideration. She wasn't quite sure how she felt about her apparent loss in ignorance.

Serenity didn't say anything to his reluctant response, in fear that she made an embarrassing scene of herself. Instead, she looked up at the run down hotel with the broken sign, and a deep sense of dread settled at the bottom of her stomach. Were they really going to stay here? Despite her reluctance, she followed Niko in, and nodded at his explanation. "It's better than sleeping on the streets, I guess…"

Her discomfort rose to even more levels as they walked in. The smell of the man frightened her, someone who indulged in that much smoking and alcohol couldn't possibly be a good person. But, he spoke to Niko with ease and kindness, and Niko spoke back without any of his usual nervousness. She watched the scene unfold in front of her with a bit of curiosity, she's never seen Niko seemed… relax? Well, perhaps not-as-scared is the better term.

When the man winked at her, her face blush at the indication of his words. "Its n-nothing like that!" she denied immediately. She couldn't believe the man would suggest such a thing, they were still children for goodness sake! As they walked towards the room, she kept her head down, trying to hide even more of her embarrassed. At Niko's comfort, though, she looked back up at him. The surprise she felt earlier were magnified now – she was right! Niko was rather comfortable here.

"At least the room smells clean…" She still followed Niko around for a little bit, curious to see what the room was like also. For the price they paid, it wasn't actually a terrible room, and she was glad that the owner took the time to make sure nothing smelled like the previous guests. She lingered in the restroom though, as she really wanted to take a shower. But when she saw the bathrobe in the closet, she was a little hesitant to use them. Who knows where they've been? She took one of the bathrobe and sniffed it, just to make sure they smelled clean. Once satisfied that they're actually clean, Serenity took one down.

At Niko's question she blushed once more and shook her head. "No! That's fine… It's safe in here, so I don't want you to be outside by yourself… Besides, the bed is big enough for the both of us." She muttered a little, and a little bit of guilt showed on her face. She didn't want to kick out the person who paid for the room just because she was a little uncomfortable. Serenity walked back to the bathroom, "I'm going to take a shower." She announced and closed the door behind her.

She was fully expecting a freezing cold shower, but the room surprised her. It wasn't a piping hot shower, like she wanted, but it was warm enough to not leave her shivering and miserable. She made sure to cut her usual shower time short though, as she didn't want to take all the warm water for herself. When she was finished, she put on her own clothes, besides her pants and jacket, and wrapped the bathrobe around herself. She was glad that the bathrobe was actually quite big for her, as the ends of it brushed against her ankles. It made things less awkward.

Without any blow dryer to use, she left her hair down and wet. She tried her best to dry it with a towel, but one can only do so much. She finally opened up the shower down and looked over at Niko, "the water is actually pretty warm if you want to shower yourself!" She then made her way to the bed and sat down at the edge. She glanced at the TV and fridge, knowing both were useless, and she sighed. Suddenly, she heard some banging and yells from the walls. She heard every word rather loudly, "How DARE you cheat on me! You... slut!!!" A man screamed and Serenity felt her heart beat faster at the yelling. She tried to keep from listening further to the conversation, but the walls were practically non-existence. "I didn't! I didn't do it! I swear!"

She wanted to take out her hearing aids, so she could be greeted with silence, but she still wanted to talk to Niko. So, to keep herself occupied, she decided to look at her newly bought hearing aids, and even looked over the supplies that Niko bought. She didn't know what to think about the supplies he bought, but she did pick up the phone box. Maybe they could set it up tonight? That'll give them something to do before they both decided to sleep. She didn't open up the box, in case Niko decided that he didn't want to, but she read and study the information on the box.

Niko felt horrible as Serenity responded, her blushing and guilt-stricken face casting a shadow on his heart. After she walked past him with one of the bath robes and announced what she was doing, he nodded, then picked up his supplies and carried them over to the bed. Niko didn't dare to take off his clothes yet, knowing full well how poorly that would end, but he desperately wanted to check his injuries. As he heard the shower in the bathroom turn on, he stared at the useless T.V. and took his headset off. After turning it on and looking it over, he found the "channel" button on the headset, and performed the right sequence of actions to tune the headset to the television. Once he put the headset onto his head, he immediately recoiled in freight.

The noise which came from the television was a girl screaming in agony and a guy laughing mercilessly. Niko quickly turned the headset off, horrified as he stared at the thing on the table. He tried pressing a few buttons on the television, hoping to turn it off, but when he turned his headset back on and tested to see if it worked, all he heard was heavy breathing and groaning from two people. Niko then gave up and set the channel of his headset back to zero, rolling his eyes after turning the device off and putting it back around his neck. "I guess we're lucky that the screen doesn't work..." he thought, glaring at the speakerless device on the counter.

After a few more moments, noting that the shower was still working on the other side of the wall he was next to, he pulled out one of the three gauze packages and the isopropyl alcohol, then he took the bags of supplies back over to the closet and put everything except the gauze and the alcohol back into the closet, including his headset. Niko took down the other bathrobe which was in the closet and hid the two items he took out inside the heavy cloth outfit, then walked back over to the bed, but before he sat down in the bed, he started to feel a few sharp pains in his legs as his skin's numbness steadily wore off. He decided to wait by the T.V. instead of sitting on the bed and possibly staining it with blood or standing in front of the bathroom and further distressing Serenity.

Niko spent his time waiting for Serenity deep in thought, wondering about how to explain his injuries if she found out about them, and thinking about his memories in an attempt to remember anything important which he could then tell her. Unfortunately, he made no progress in either respect by the time the girl, now with flowing, damp hair, exited the room wearing a bath robe. Niko blushed at the sight of her, but made no comment as she spoke and walked over. "Alright," he responded, passing her quickly as he made his way over to the bathroom, "thanks!"

He shut the door behind him, but noted that there was no lock on the door. He looked around to see two wet towels placed messily under the sink, along with another few dry towels rolled up on top of the sink to one side. Niko disrobed himself and analyzed his bandaging quickly, then began to unravel the dressings which he applied. Only a few patches of his full-body dressing was still white, seeing as almost his entire body was covered in blood. Niko frowned upon analyzing his front and back, then took the gauze and alcohol out of his bathrobe, which he placed in the corner of the room with his clothes, and started to fix his bandaging.

Niko heard some banging outside the restroom once he was about half-way done undoing his bandages, and quickly peeked his head out to see Serenity staring at hear hearing aids. He sighed in relief, then quickly pulled his head back into the room and closed the door to continue his work. After a minute or so, he walked over to the shower, then turned it on as gently as he could, and started to clean himself, desperately looking through the various body-care items as the water carried some of the caked blood on his skin down to the drain.

Once he had done as much as he thought he could safely do, he turned the shower off and exited it, carefully drying himself off by patting his skin down. After becoming dry, he took a few cotton swabs from the kit of stuff provided on the sink top and patted all of the injuries of his arms with isopropyl alcohol, biting into a towel as he did so. The boy managed to tend to all of his wounds in this manner, cleaning the wide slashes, then wrapping the affected areas with securely-applied and re-wrapped gauze. Once Niko felt that he was done, he stared at his clothes and frowned. After a few seconds, he walked over to the sink and placed all of his black clothes into it, leaving his shoes in the same spot, and put his bathrobe on, tying the strange cloth which hung out around his waist just like a shoe.

Niko washed all of his clothing in the sink, straining them out every now and then to see red, then continued washing them, frowning. After a few minutes, he used a towel to dry out his undergarments and his grey t-shirt, but left his sweatpants and his jacket to hang-dry from the curtain rack of the shower. Once he carefully dressed himself once again, he grumbled, did his best to clean blood off of various surfaces, then piled his dressings inside one of the bloody towels and hid it under the other dirty towels under the sink. Niko left the bathroom after all this was accomplished, having taken a full half hour, then walked over to the closet and commented, "You're right, it was pretty warm. I feel a lot better now..." He then placed the gauze and alcohol back into the shopping bag of supplies and walked over to Serenity with similarly wet hair, taking a seat on the bed. "What was that sound earlier?" he asked.

Immediately after asking this, he noted a few other loud banging sounds from across the hall, and fell silent, staring at the door. He looked over at the girl and quickly asked, "It wasn't like this the whole time I was in there...was it?"

Serenity was about to answer his question before more loud banging could be heard from outside. She winced a bit again but nodded. "It was only once in a while, but its fine…" She held up the phone box, though, in attempt to change the subject. "How about we try setting your phone up?"

Before he could approve, she opened the box for him and held out the phone. "Here you go!" She smiled, enjoying the touch of the slick surface. She always loved new phones, although she hardly ever got one herself, because of the lack of money and all that jazz. "Just hold the top button down for 10 seconds to turn it on."

She continued to smile despite wincing lightly at the sound of more yelling came from the background.

Niko frowned as he saw Serenity wince and walked over to her with concern, desperately wanting to remedy the situation. Before he could reach her, however, the girl held up the phone box which he had bought. Niko was taken aback by this offer and quickly stared at her in surprise as she started to open it. He did not bother to comment, or to ask what she was doing, and instead merely watched her pull the phone out and offer it to him. Niko smiled sheepishly and accepted the device from her, quickly peeling off a few of the pieces of plastic applied to the surface of the screen and the square button at the bottom.

After he heard her instruction, he hopped onto the bed beside Serenity and Did as she instructed. Sure enough, the phone soon turned on. "I think we should plug it in..." he commented, noticing that it immediately turned back off, "Does it have a charger?" After asking this question, Niko quickly got an idea. He placed the phone down next to Noelle and walked over to the closet with the extra pillows and other supplies. He threw the pillows against the door, dulling some of the sound, then threw a blanket over that, hanging it from the hydraulic thing attaching the door to the wall.

After this, Niko grabbed the portable battery and took it over to the bed as well. He took it out of the box, commenting, "this will come in handy..." He unwound the various wires and looked around for a power outlet, plugging the device in once he found it. The battery was fairly heavy, but was covered in a thick, protective shell so that it would not rupture on the go. Niko walked over to the couch and took the phone, then asked Serenity for the box and accepted that as well. He quickly moved back over to the outlet after this and, after some effort, he got the phone plugged in and charging as well. "Now we wait," he said, smiling over at Serenity. ".....I remember that you said something about a number?..." he mumbled, looking back at her as he turned his phone on, holding the button for a few seconds, then watching lights flicker around as the phone progressively turned on.

Serenity's eyes were wide as she watched Niko move around the room. At first, she was quite confused on what he was doing, "Niko? What...?" But then it soon dawned to her about his intentions. The loud noises and yelling, although could still be heard, were dulled out considerably. She smiled genuinely at his idea, glad for his ingenious idea "Thanks!"

For the rest of the time she watched him as he proceeded to plug in a device to charge his phone. She then stood up and went to sit next by him, glancing over at his brand new phone. As he asked the question she perked up. "Oh! The man in the store should have signed you up for a plan..." She blinked at the realization, remember that she didn't hear such a thing happen. "Did he do that...?"

Niko sighed when Serenity responded, briefly responding, "no...I bought it as a 'pay phone,' so I did not need to sign a contract..." The boy did not fully understand what the meaning of the term which he used was, but he started messing around pressing icons on the screen, knowing that the phone would work if he did the right things. "S-so, what do you do with this?...do you need to make an account?..." Niko stared blankly at Serenity after speaking, then looked down at the phone and offered it to her, declaring, "here, c-can you show me how to use it?"

Almost immediately after he handed her the phone, there was a loud slamming noise in the room next door, followed by a few angry screams from both the man and the woman, none of which Niko bothered trying to listen to as he asked Serenity, "do you use your phone a lot?...I never had a phone before, b-but I know how to use a computer, so...it shouldn't be that hard...right?"

She didn't want to seem rude, but Serenity couldn't help but laugh a little. She was about to take the phone, when the loud noises made her jump at first. It took a few seconds to calm herself down, but then she took the phone from Niko. She laughed yet again, but this time it was strained and nervous, "That was surprising huh...?" Niko didn't seem to react at the noise, but Serenity wondered if he was trying just as hard as she was to ignore it.

She pressed a few buttons on the phone a bit, commenting, "They should have activated your phone already, I think, so it should be ready to go." She held the phone back to him, and on the screen her name was displayed along with a string of 10-digit number. "That's showing my contact! And if you press here..." She leaned forward a bit to look at the screen as well and tapped on a button, bringing up a different screen. "You can type me a message!"

As the screaming beside them got louder, Serenity's hand clutched on tightly on the seat, but her other hand just helped Niko type out a message to herself. On the screen, he can then see a small bubble - ( Hi! ).

She then smiled and took out her own phone and held it up to show Niko. "See? And then I get it! Which... I'll just answer really quick..." After a few seconds, Niko's phone ring to indicate an arriving text message. And another bubble show up on the screen - ( Hey, Niko! :) )

Niko frowned as serenity jumped, feeling as if her surprise reaction was his fault, in some way. e looked down in shame after she accepted the phone, then, after her reactionary mumblings, he responded with a quick, "Y-yeah...s-sorry, again...I didn't think it'd be this bad..." He was glad to see that Serenity apparently forced the thought out of her mind as she worked on his new phone, her fingers dancing around on the touch screen as she typed something in to a box. Once she handed the phone back to him, Niko analyzed the screen and smiled, realizing what she had done. He looked up at her as she started to tap buttons on the phone as he held it, tilting the screen towards her so she had an easier time.

The screaming from the other room only got louder and more pained, almost urging Niko to call the police to report the two, but he didn't know the number for the police yet, and Serenity was being really kind and helping him, so he listened to her as she pressed on the screen a few times, then pressed a blue button on the side, which Niko later identified as the "send" button. He stared at the screen as Serenity pulled out her own phone, which made a brief sound as she pulled it out, then stared down at his own phone as she typed a few keys into her phone.

He was shocked to find that it was making sounds and vibrating, but was rather impressed at the quality of sounds which it made. "Wow! That's pretty cool!" Niko declared, smiling happily over at Serenity after reading the message. But, after looking closer at the message, he pointed to the colon and the end parenthesis and asked, "But...what is this supposed to be?" Almost immediately after asking this, there was a loud shatter in the room next door, followed by the slamming of a door and a shout of, "Wait!" as the feminine voice called out again. Niko frowned over at the wall, then looked back at Noelle and said, "I think it'll be more quiet now..." with a sly, but uncertain grin.

He looked down at his phone after she explained what the symbol was, then, trying to figure out how to use the device, he tapped the box next to "send" and was surprised to see a keyboard pop up. He typed a quick message into the box, [[ Thanks! :) ]] then quickly smiled up at Serenity as he placed his phone back on the ground. "I'll be sure to contact you with my phone if I ever need to tell you something." Niko commented, rising up from the floor in order to walk back over to the bed. Once he sat on the bed again, he picked up the controller for the T.V. and pressed all the buttons, then walked over to it and searched behind the cabinet to find that it wasn't plugged in. "Oh...well, that would do it..." he commented, quickly reaching behind the cabinet unit to plug the wire into its outlet. Immediately after he did so, the television turned on to an inappropriate advertisement which was extremely degrading to women.

Niko walked back over to the couch before turning over and seeing what was on the T.V., then he blushed deep red and immediately pressed the power button. He was silent for a few seconds, then passed Serenity the remote, got up, and walked away for a brief moment, his eyes still wide in shock.

After a few moments, he walked back over to the bed, blushing slightly, and sat down once again without a word, unsure about whether to look over at Serenity or not.

Serenity smiled at his curiousity, and although she felt a small spark of surprise at his lack of knowledge, she quickly brushed it away. She was getting quite use to the boy's rather eccentric knowledge. "It's a happ-" suddenly, a loud yell of "Wait!" echoed through the hallways and into their room. Serenity winced once again, then nodded a bit at Niko's comment. "I really hope so…" She muttered under her breath, wondering if praying to God would help.

It didn't take long for Serenity to continue her explanation, she was rather eager in teaching Niko about the nuances and techniques of using a smart phone. When he proved to her that he understood the lesson, she smiled back at him and watched as he got back up. "I thought the TV didn't work?" she said after Niko helplessly tried to turn on the TV, but then he noticed something completely idiotic. She laughed as he plugged in the power source, "Oh," was her only comment at both of their idiocy. Eagerly, she awaited and looked over at the TV, but as soon as it was turned on…

A naked woman – well, Serenity thought she might as well be naked, there wasn't quite much left to reveal – showed up on the screen. Serenity's face blushed in many shades of red and she quickly turned away. As soon as she did, she heard Niko shut off the TV, probably seeing the commercial as well. An awkward silent ensued, and she wasn't quite sure what to say. "I could just comment about what we just saw… But… That might lead to another awkward subject."

Serenity glanced back up at Niko, but the look of shock was still glued onto his face. This only further her blush and she almost felt sorry for him. "I have those body parts… And that was awkward for me." She couldn't even imagine what Niko was thinking about.

And with that final thought, Serenity suddenly burst out laughing. She couldn't help herself! "S-Sorry!" She said in between her laughter, and she wiped the tears from her face. "It's just… This entire situation…" She continued her laughter once more before dying out. "I'm sorry, Niko." Her smile was still large despite her apology, "It's just… I thought it was funny, us being stuck in a situation like this! A few days ago, I thought you would just run like a frightened bunny at just the IDEA of being in the same room as me!"

She looked over at the TV, "And yet, here we are. Stuck in a room with screaming adults and questionable television shows." She tilted her head towards Niko, a wide grin still stuck, "Funny where life takes us, huh?"

She didn't know what else to do and decided to look at the clock. It was getting pretty late, so she decided to lay down on the bed, making sure she gave plenty of room for Niko. "Want to go to bed soon?" She called out, trying not to think of how inappropriate the entire situation may look.

Niko was aided in his decision once Serenity changed the awkwardness of the situation by starting to laugh. He looked over at her in nervous confusion, unsure of whether to be afraid of her...or happy that she was laughing and not crying. He ended up feeling happy as he saw her expression. Despite the tears falling from her eyes, he could tell that she was happy, so he felt happy as well, his face gradually melting into a caring smile as he calmly waited for an explanation.

Once she smiled at him and apologized, he briefly mumbled, "n-no, it's fine, I--" but he stopped himself right before she started to speak, having noticed her brief inhale before speaking, and blushed slightly from embarrassment as he listened to her some more. He couldn't help but feel warm inside as she spoke, remembering the various interactions from the past few days, especially her brief song in the cafeteria and her explanation for locking arms on the way to the shop. At the mention of the television, the image quickly flashed back over his mind's eye and he immediately blushed harder, quickly looking away from Serenity in shame.

He almost wanted to hide from her as he nodded to her question. He was starting to understand why she was so uncomfortable earlier, and was starting to get nervous as he thought more about what he had done by bringing her to the hotel. "I never knew....I...I should have just gone with the phone plan, an...a-and got us a better room." He mouthed to himself, staring at the floor in near silence. When she asked him about going to bed, he looked over at her with concern, but responded, "uhh, y-yeah, sure. I'll go turn off the lights..." He then rose up from his seat at the foot of the couch and walked over to the door. After quickly making sure that it was locked again, he turned the lights of the room off and walked back over to the bed, barely able to see. Once he felt the corner of the bed, he crawled onto it and made his way towards the pillows.

He didn't realize immediately as he crawled along, his numbed, bandaged limbs betraying his senses - but he recoiled once he discovered that he had wandered too far in the darkness and crawled onto the wrong side of the bed. He recoiled so energetically that he bounded off of the surprisingly springy bed and landed on the table cabinet against the wall, barely avoiding the television, but landing on the remote. The T.V. then immediately turned on again, but switched to a different inappropriate channel. Niko gasped and quickly apologized, then scrambled to get the controller out from under him.

After a few torturous moments, he took the remote and turned the T.V. off. He threw the remote away after this and cupped his face in his hands as the darkness returned. "I.....I'm s-so sorry..." he said, sniffling slightly. He rose from where he was sitting and wandered back to the bed, but guided his hand along until he felt the wall which the bed was up against, then hugged the wall as he made his way onto the bed, wiping tears from his eye secretively as he did so. He had to carefully fit his legs under the covers so that the bathrobe didn't come undone around him, then he lied down on his back and closed his eyes, staying close to the wall as he tried to calm himself down. "I'm...I am so cruel...t-to do this to a friend..." he thought, wiping tears from his eyes once again as he tried to fall asleep.

When Niko turned off the light, Serenity realized that she hadn't taken off her hearing aids yet. She decided to wait, though, until she knew he was at least safe under the covers. After all, he disappeared last time from a locked room, right? It took him a while to come towards her, but then Serenity felt a hand pressed against her. She yelped slightly, and then heard a loud THUD and then very load moaning and groaning. Her eyes widen in shock and she couldn't help but stare at the TV for a few moments before quickly turning away. What on earth did she just see?! Thankfully, Niko quickly shut off the TV and the strange noises ceased immediately, but their echoes still burned into her now-red ears. "Why would someone even have that channel?!" She muttered to herself, still in disbelief by the very obscene scene.

"It's… it's fine…" She muttered quietly at Niko's apology, but she didn't know what else to say to dispel his obvious embarrassment. Finally, she felt a small dip into the bed – on the RIGHT side of the bed this time – and felt the small vibrations through the bed as he went to get comfortable. He was quiet the entire time, and Serenity can feel the crushing awkward silence around them. "G-good night…?" She whispered quietly.

For a while, she could not fall asleep. They were in such a strange environment… In such a shady hotel… And the awkwardness that were now having to endure was not very comforting to her. Serenity was quite tempted to take off her hearing aids, but she didn't feel safe at the thought. Instead, while still facing away from Niko, she decided to somehow strike another conversation with him. But what could she ask…?

"What's your favorite color?" She finally blurted out, unable to think of anything else to say. She felt her face turn red, once again, at her inability to conjure a better question. She could only hope that Niko was already fast asleep.

Tarou wanted to return the girl's quiet, "good night," but he could not bring himself to speak. No matter how hard Niko tried, his throat was clogged by his heart, which was beating too quickly to give him the time to suppress it. He closed his eyes and turned his head to the left to see if he could make out a few of the expressions which she wore, but only managed to see the vague outline of her silhouette.

After a few moments of waiting, looking between the ceiling and the silhouette of Serenity's face, he flinched as he suddenly heard the girl start to speak. In answer to her question, Niko smiled dejectedly. He saw through the tone of her response and immediately got an idea of why she was asking such a random question. He remained silent for a few seconds as he focused his energies on clearing his throat enough to talk, then mused, "I...I don't like colors....I like white light and sound...but, I...I like purple, I guess....and orange...they go well together...especially the brighter colors..." He sighed after he spoke, feeling some relief already. It was as if the awkward images were thrown out of his mind merely by his attempt to give her an honest response.

After another few seconds, he calmly asked her, "what do you think...a-about me, Serenity?" He sighed after saying this, then elaborated, "Ever since we first met, I've been constantly confused, and I hurt you plenty of times, and even lied so that I could avoid you......wh...wh-why are you so calm around me?....You have shown me nothing but kindness, a-and...and I still feel scared around you..." He wiped his face a few times and started fake yawning after a few seconds, then calmly closed his eyes and started to ask, "why...do I have a friend in you?"

Serenity listened to Niko sort of ramble on, but didn't quite understand what he meant at first. But she smiled at his answer, enjoying it. She was actually quite surprised, after all, Niko seemed like the type to like dark colors, since he always wore black. But, that was besides the point. Despite her strange random question, by the time Niko finished answering the question, he seemed to have calmed down just a tad.

And it wasn't as awkward anymore.

After he had his chance to ask a question, Serenity paused a bit to think about it. Niko had been rather strange, but... He wasn't a bad guy. "To tell you the truth... I was going to give up on you..." She muttered a bit, remembering the constant ego-shattering rejections he gave her. Man, did those hurt. "But... I guess, after you disappeared, I just felt worried about you. I'm sure everyone did." She muttered, "And then I wanted to help you when you came back." She knew her words were useless; she just didn't know how to explain herself. There was no one reason on why she didn't just walk away from the weird guy that constantly shoved her away, but it was perhaps a plethora of reasons that led to such 'kindness.'

In any case, Serenity was confused by her own thoughts and shook her head. "Like... an angry stray you find in the streets." She decided to attempt one more time, "It bites you... But you can't help but want to help him. It's sort of like that, but... more." She trailed off in the end, unsure how else to describe it. "But! I like you the way you are now, Niko! So, you'll always have a friend in me!" She laughed a bit softly.

Serenity was glad to have a friend in Niko. He was interesting, and he didn't seem like a bad gu- wait... What? What did he say? "Lie to me? When?" She asked curiously, hoping that she wasn't going to keep him up for too long. "Unless you mean about the bandages... I really hope you don't lie to me about that anymore" She finished a little sadly, wishing that Niko had more trust in her.

Niko felt a knife in his chest when he heard Serenity's initial response, but knew that it wasn't a real knife when he clutched his chest. He closed his eyes and fought back tears, remembering how they initially met, seeing her expression, and all the stupid things he did. He hid his face and wiped his eyes a bit more, but he could not cry. The tears of regret and sorrow were gone. He imagined Serenity's face as she spoke, unable to actually see it in the darkness of their room. He gradually calmed down as she started to analogize him to a stray dog, almost feeling as if her words were appropriate, in some respect. He still felt the pain of the imaginary knife in his chest, but he dealt with it and paid close attention to her words.

He was hoping for a more adequate explanation, but her analogy helped him to understand her a bit more. "She pities me...good, that's better..." Despite his thoughts, he didn't feel any more relieved. When Serenity suddenly started speaking after her comment on friendship, he felt the knife return even harder. "What is this feeling?........guilt..." he mused, imagining what he should do in the circumstances, "If I tell her that..........no, that won't happen...If I show her....b-but, if I don't...I..." He cleared his throat after a few seconds of awkward pausing, attempting to clear his mind of his uncertainty.

At long last, he had decided on what he was going to say. His voice was firm and strong, but his body was still. He stared at his closed eye lids and allowed his voice to flow freely as he responded, "I lied...wh-when I woke up, I was attacked...th-that dream I told you and your friend about,....i-it wasn't a dream..." he frowned, then hastily continued, "it was just a random guy...he ran at me from the sidewalk with the metal pipe you saw and hit me in the head. It was early in the morning, so the next time I woke up, it was in the afternoon. I...w-wasn't hit that hard...the guy was pretty weak, but...Some of my blood was pooled around it, so I picked up the pipe and started to run...th-then I bumped into you and stated following those instructions..."

He sighed, then, once again, he continued to speak without much of a pause, "I...I didn't want to freak you and your friend out by saying all of that...even now, I...I don't think I should have told that to you...b-but it hurts to lie..." Despite these words, the pain in his chest was only slightly relieved, but he hoped that the shadows would hide this emotion, or that it would vanish with his consciousness as he went to sleep soon.

Serenity felt like she messed up when they were once again thrust into a strange air of awkwardness. She tried to bury her head in her pillow, but the strange scent of clean laundry did nothing to comfort her - she missed her own bed. Finally, after forever, Niko spoke and she felt herself hanging on to every word.

She was a little shocked at his confession, but more worried than shock. Someone actually attacked him - that was what the bloody pipe was all about! It wasn't for some sort of... animal, it was for a real human being. But once again, she found herself convincing herself, "It was for self defense... I probably would have done the same thing." At the thought of blood though, she winced. Niko goes through way too much, it was so unfair. Why couldn't the fates give the poor boy a break?!

Immediately, after Niko said his last words, she refuted, "No! No! It's fine." She turned to face him, although she could see nothing in the dark. She wanted to reach out to touch him, to comfort him, but she held herself back. Comforting touches didn't really help him before... "I want to help you, Niko, really! I'm a bit freaked out... But NOT because of you, but because of the things that happen TO you! It's not right what you have to go through..." She sat up a bit, trying look over at him. But with the help of the moonlight, she realized he was facing the other way, so she still saw nothing. "So you don't have to go through the pain of lying anymore, okay, Niko?" Serenity's voice was soft and a bit quiet, but she was determined to convince him to give her his trust.

"And... And... I'll try not to lie to you! If... Anything bothers me, I'll tell you!!!" Her face felt a little red in embarassed by her declaration, "but friendships are not one sided! If I want Niko to trust me, I have to trust him to." She smiled in the dark, feeling a little more confident in herself as the memories of Niko's fierce protection from the earlier rude woman came in mind. "It won't be a hard thing for me to do... He's trustworthy after all - even if he is a bit strange and unpredictable." She allowed her body to lay back down after her thoughts and she closed her eyes.

Niko felt the pain in his stomach rise to his throat as Serenity continued to speak, thinking that, at any moment, his chest would implode and he would be dead. Serenity's words were unexpected, to some extent, and her pity made the pain of guilt even worse. He grimaced when she mentioned the things which happened to him, remembering the heated events one by one despite not being mentioned. But, most importantly, he was not expecting her to speak in quite the way which she did, despite knowing that she would attempt to console him.

After her promise to be truthful, he looked over to see her sitting up and staring down at him. Initially, he was unsettled at the sight of the shadowy figure overlooking him, but he soon smiled sheepishly, feeling an appreciation welling up in his stabbed heart, and thankfully said, "Th...th-thanks, Serenity...Th...th-that means a lot to me..." He looked back up at the ceiling for a few moments, thinking about what he could ask her to avoid leaving her in silence again. Then, after a few seconds, he quickly mumbled, "Serenity...." with a slight fear sneaking into his tone, "...d-do you...want to sleep? I-I'm sorry if I'm keeping you awake.....a-and,..." once again, Niko found himself attempting to find the right words, but failed, so he decided to simply comment, "...I promise the same...I-I'll try, at least..."

He frowned and closed his eyes after saying this, then briefly reached out to her with a robed arm. He lightly patted her shoulder, then laid down again, feeling just as awkward as before. "I...guess I misunderstood her...even still..."

Serenity giggled a bit happily, and she nodded. "You're not keeping me awake... But I am getting rather... tired." As if to emphasize her point, she let out a soft yawn, "So... Good night, Niko."

Soon enough, her breathing got a little heavier as she drifted off to sleep.

~~~
For the most part, the rest of the night was quiet. There were no noises, no questionable banging, and no screaming. Despite the rough start, the rest of their sleep was rather peaceful.
Except for 5 AM. At 5 AM, there were more screaming and yelling. This time coming from 2 rooms besides them - they seemed to be all together in a group yelling nonsense at each other, blaming each other, and refusing to let up on their constant screams. To make matters worse, another guy suddenly came out and started to yell out profanities trying to shut everyone up. It was like an alarm, but a rather rude on.
Despite that, Serenity stayed asleep. Her hearing aids had slipped off while she was sleeping, and she was still rather dead to the world.
She didn't even stir when there were sudden loud banging crashing down on their own door.
Niko nodded over to Serenity as she said good night, then got comfortable on his side of the bed and gradually fell asleep as the intense emotions of the day started to fade. It was tough for him to muster the ability to fall asleep beside Serenity, but he convinced himself to trust her and the locks on the door. Before he realized it, Niko was unconscious, re-visualizing his scattered, corrupted memories and sweating profusely.
---The Next Day--- [Monday, December 22nd]
Niko gradually woke up as the screaming and yelling in the other room started, transitioning from his sleeping state to wakefullness. At first, he forgot where he was, so he looked around to get his bearings and saw Serenity's face, with the two small ear-bud devices on the bed beside her ears. Niko gently took the two hearing aids, being careful about how he shifted his weight in the bed, then, with her earbuds in hand, he cautiously, slowly made his way off of the bed.
Whether she could hear him or not, he did not know, but the girl continued her somewhat agitated breathing in what Niko would describe as, "peaceful sleep." He walked over to the table beside the bed and placed her hearing aids on it, staring at her for a few seconds, unsure about whether he wanted her to wake up or not. After blushing, realizing that he was staring at a sleeping girl, he walked over to the bathroom, closed the door, and quickly changed back into his clothes, which were now both clean and dry. He was happy to see that his bandaging was still clean once he took off his bath robe, but it reminded him of lying, so his happiness was quickly smitten by the feeling of guilt in his chest.
After he was fully clothed, wearing his slightly damp hoodie over his shirt, and forcing his feet into his shoes, Niko quietly walked out of the bathroom and placed his used bath robe back on its hanger in the closet. As he was placing his headset onto his head, he flinched hard as a loud banging sound erupted from the door. Niko assumed that, had Serenity heard it, she would be awake, so he quickly walked over to the door and peeped out the eye-hole, grumbling, "What is it? Who's there?" in as threatening a voice as he could muster, the likes of which was somewhat believable, despite the slight wavering in his voice.
A large burly man, whose eyes were as red as blood, just scoffed at the sound of Niko's threatening voice. "What? Tryin' to scare me, boy?!" His low voice vibrated much loudly than needed. His voice was easily distinguishable, though, he was the man screaming out profanities telling all the other 'idiots to shut their pie-holes.'
"Well, get your butt off the beds," He yelled rather loudly again, "Those freak'n drunken idiots decided that fire was the best way to solve their problems. So LEAVE THE BUILDING." He finished, before running off to warn some other unsuspecting guests.
As in right on cue, dark black smoke began to sneak in from underneath the door. People could be heard screaming and rushing down the hallway in panic as the man spread the news further and faster. To add more to their yells, the fire alarm just then started to kick in, and a loud blaring "BEEEEEP. BEEEEEEEP. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP," was enough to even wake Serenity up.
She woke up slowly at first, the noises not quite loud enough to cause her any alarm, as she couldn't hear them very well. She blinked at the sight of Niko and then looked around for her hearing aids. "Where...?" She then let out a scream as the sprinklings went off, soaking both her and Niko to the bone. "What's going ON?!"
