It was sort of hard for the Guardians to help Naomi believe when all the things they could do the girl couldn't see. She couldn't see Sandy's golden sand, Tooth doubted throwing some teeth at the girl would help her be anything but disgusted (besides, who would throw around something as wonderful and memory filled as teeth?), Bunny didn't have any eggs right now with Easter being so far away, and North had toys, which was a kind of normal thing fro people to see. Really, Jack with his ability to make snow was the only physical thing any of them could make appear that might help the girl believe. Or, so Tooth thought any way.
Yet, when Sandy showed a golden image above his head of a doll, not unlike the one Naomi was holding, the gears in Tooth's head began to turn and she perked up, smiling brightly, "Wait! I think I get what Sandy is trying to say!" She flew around the others then over to the doors that lead into North's office. She swiftly opened the doors (which made Naomi jump in surprise and turn in the direction of the doors that had suddenly 'opened by themselves') and flew inside, straight over to a small shelf that hung just a foot above the height of North's desk other on the side of the room. And on the self, were five items. Five very important presents that each of the Guardians had given to a certain little girl many years ago. Tooth looked to the others, "The gifts. They were hers anyway, so why not let her see them again? Maybe it will trigger something. Anything."
And as Tooth finished speaking, Naomi had hesitantly wandered into the room, looking about the office warily. She looked at a few different things. Ice sculptures made to be the 'blue prints' for the toys the Yetis made, a small ice train set running about the room, a few other strange yet fun looking toys. And of course a Christmas tree in the corner, as was the norm for good old North. The sight of all the Christmas stuff caused Naomi to smile a little, a small grin on her face, "Never seen a place so decorated for Christmas before. A tree in every room and tensile everywhere." As she walked around, just as the Guardians had hoped, she pause as she came to the presents on the self, looking at the them closely.
She recognized them, just as she recognized this whole place. But...these strange objects she recognized even more so. Reaching out, she delicately picked up the first thing, a small...egg? She supposed that's what it was, but had little legs and feet on it. Kneeling down, she set in on the floor and watched as it began walking around. For some reason, it was kind of normal to see an egg do something like that. As it walked around, she moved to the other items. A small toy fairy that when cranked began flying around. A teddy bear which she held to her, enjoying its softness and how it made her feel relaxed. A small wooden polar bear. For some reason, she favorited this a lot, spending a lot of time looking at it and admiring the work it took to make such a thing. And lastly, she looked at what was a small bell.
She picked up the bell and shook it, yet frowned as no sound but a small 'thump thump' of the metal ball inside came out. Was it broken? For some reason, not hearing any sound from it kind of upset her. She wanted to hear the sound, yet didn't know why it was so important to her. Why was it so important to hear the sound of the bell? She shook it again, closer to her ear this time, struggling to hear anything. When she didn't, she sat on the floor against the wall, the bell in her hand as she looked around at all the gifts.
They all seemed very familiar, just like everything else did here, but more so than all else she had seen before. Because they were connected in some way. Her eyes continued to glance between all the things and as she did, she started think. All of these places she had been to so far, they were connected with those beings. The Guardians as they were called in her book. She had memory of them from her dreams of course as well. The Warren was connected to the giant bunny. Oh, what was his name? She thought hard for a long moment, and as she did, she found herself looking to the little toy egg walking around, seeming to make a sort of connection as she did, a name coming to mind, "Bunnymund." She whispered, and then, as if that was the start of it all, her eyes moved to the toy fairy, "Tooth." Then the bear that she held to her with one arm, "Sandy." She looked to the wooden polar bear that sat on the floor next to her, "Jack Frost."
Lastly, her eyes moved down to the bell in her hand, "North." Yes, she remembered these things. From her dreams. They had been gifts to her on Christmas. Wasn't that the same Christmas her parents had vanished? Yes. The nightmare with the giant shadow. It had seemed so real at the time, but of course, when she had told the adults, they told her that was just a nightmare, which she had believed of course. But....what if...what if it hadn't been a nightmare? What if it had been real? What if all those 'dreams' had been real?
She continued to stare hard at the bell and shook it. Still, no sound came out. She frowned deeply as she focused on it, thinking to what had been said when it was given to her all those years ago in her 'dream', whispering those very words to herself, "It rings for only those who believe..." Only those who believed. Believed in them. But, they were just figments of her own dreams, right? So who would believe in them? Unless they weren't just figments of her dream. But was that even possible? Well, she had never thought it was possible to fall down a giant rabbit hole and end up in a secret place, or to go through a portal and end up in the north pole either, but both of those things happened.
So, was it possible that these Guardians were real?
She closed her eyes tightly, shaking the bell near her ear. Nothing. She kept shaking it, thinking of all that had happened, trying to let herself believe, even just a little bit, that maybe all of this might be true.
And there was a sound.
She stopped shaking the bell, looking at it wide eyed, shaking it to hear a very soft sound. One barely noticeable, but still a sound. Her heart was beating fast in her chest and she began shaking it all the more, her eyes shut tightly again. She just had to will herself. To let herself forget her sanity for a moment and go back to that child like belief that, just maybe, things like this could happen. And slowly, as she did so, the bell became louder and louder until it was the familiar ringing she remembered it to have. Very slowly now, she opened her eyes and when she did, they widened as they stared at five very familiar beings standing there that sure hadn't been there before.
The Guardians.
